Looks very nice, but never been in. Have driven past though.

Think this is now the third time that we have been we went just after it had opened so it was really quiet plenty of seating to choose from as per the breakfast was lovely we didn't have to wait long for it to be brought to our table the lass who served us may be new she has short black hair got to say she was lovely sending a massive thank you to her

I had an amazing homemade steak pie and chips. My mam had the vegetarian breakfast but they made it suitable for vegans. Very good food and lovely staff. We will definitely be coming back.

I was really impressed with the quality of the food served up here. It has a quirky edge to it with odd menu pricing like £3.63 or £4.07 and such like. I was first inclined to the fish finger sandwich as I’ve not had one in half a lifetime but I kept going back to the ham and Cornish cruncher cheese croissant. I flip - flopped to at least two other choices but settled on the croissant and a flat white. It was the Cheddar cheese that did it. It’s an order at the counter and pay up front place so our friend popped to the counter. Once the food arrived mine was a toasted ham & cheese toastie not a croissant as our friend got a bit nonplussed. The ham was proper boiled ham and the cheese was delicious. They also added pomegranate seeds that taste delightful. The biggest downside was no Colman’s English mustard. This borders on a crime. There’s not much banter with staff as customers self - order and pay, with the server only appearing with food to ask who ordered what. The seats were cosy too and there was quite a good crowd in. I’m not surprised as all the food served to four of us was excellent.

After discovering this cute little place I will most definitely be visiting again. It’s such an amazing space, and pretty unexpected. I have worked in the area for many years and only recently found out it was here. I grabbed takeout as I was on my lunch break and short on time, but thankfully the service was nice and quick. I ordered the balti chicken flatbread and a slice of carrot cake. The flatbread was delicious and a really good portion size, which I struggled to finish. The cake was not quite as impressive and a little dry, but tasty non the less. Defo recommend giving them a whirl.

Amazing selection of foods. Sandwiches are fabulous and my husband reckoned the chips and corned beef pie were the best ever. Could be a bit brighter though.

Beautiful breakfast 😋. Friendly staff. Only thing I'd change is the lighting as it's too dark in there.

This was the first time I've been here. The venue was nicely decorated with a good ambience and food was good. However, both me and my partner agreed the service wasn't the greatest... We ordered an 'Engine Room Breakfast' with toast and beans, Eggs Royale, a black coffee and a coffee with cream and sweeteners which came to just under £30. The coffee arrived promptly but quite a bit had been spilled into the saucer. I jokingly pointed this out and out waitress did apologise but did nothing to mop up the coffee. In addition, they forgot the cream, sweeteners and teaspoons...I had to go and ask for them. The engine room breakfast arrived about 10 minutes after the coffee but without the toast and beans. We pointed this out and waitress said she'd sort it. About 5 minutes later the Eggs Royale arrived but no sign of the toast or beans. Again, we pointed this out and waitress apologised and said she'd bring them. 3 or 4 minutes later she returned with the toast...but no beans! I had to go and ask again. I addition, there were no salt or pepper pots on the table and we weren't asked if we wanted any when the food eventually arrived. When we did ask, they brought small paper sachets and didn't offer any sauce for the full English. I know this all sounds a bit nitpicky and small businesses need our support, but for two breakfasts at £30, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect meals to be served together with everything that was asked for and condiments on the table (whether it be sachets or a proper salt and pepper set). I really don't like being critical, but if these things aren't highlighted then they can't be addressed. All of the above having been said, we have said we'll try this place again, just in case today was just a 'bad day' (we all have them). After all the food was nice (even if it did take time to arrive and didn't arrive together) and their selection of homemade pies, cakes and pastries did look delicious (I've bought a pie to try at home).

This was the first time my husband had been here so I was interested in his opinions. The glass counter as you enter is full of gorgeous looking cakes and sandwiches. We asked for a table and were given two menus. The menu contained a lot of choice on the sandwich, drinks and breakfast front. I chose a philli sandwich (filling and lovely) and my husband chose a grilled ploughmans scone (the same, filling and lovely). Staff, polite and attentive. The atmosphere is relaxed and it’s a nice place to go for a treat. My husbands thoughts, he enjoyed the food but found the service a bit slow and the decor was quite dark for him. Car parking is available but quite small.

My wife and I visited a few months ago, and we said that we'd not go back because it wasn't good and it definitely wasn't good value, but my mate suggested it after he'd been with his wife and thought that the toasties were lovely. Unfortunately it was the same . . . . we both had the standard breakfast (not the smaller option) and it was decent, but small (even the slice of bacon that I had was tiny, though I was supposed to have 2 slices - like my mate had, which was advertised on the menu !), it wasn't hot and it wasn't a very big breakfast. I never ask anywhere for a massive breakfast 'cos that would be too much for me, and I feel sorry for the staff having to serve such small portions when they can see that this is the case. Compared to other places it was very poor value, and I definitely won't be going back again - I've tried it twice and it was similar both times . . . . even the place is cold, we couldn't take our coats off, and, though the staff are pleasant, there's no welcoming atmosphere.

Stumbled across this lovely cafe whilst in South Shields on business. Needed somewhere for a coffee and didn’t want the usual corporate coffee chain. This was such a find, great coffee, friendly staff, very reasonably priced - so impressed we returned later for lunch!

This place is a hidden gem just popped in for a coffee but the food looked amazing well presented and by the amount of customers I would say it tasted as well as it looked .

Lovely little cafe tucked away in the Laygate area of South Shields. Beautifully decorated and deceivingly spacious with music playing in the background, made for the perfect atmosphere for a birthday brunch. The food is excellent and very reasonably priced. We had the table for 3 hours which meant we didn’t feel rushed at all and had a 2nd round of hot drinks with cake. The staff were all friendly and welcoming, from arriving to a goodbye on the way out. We will definitely be back.

We've been coming here for a little while now and I realised that I hadn't left a review. The food is absolutely fantastic. Everything is cooked to order so you know you're not getting microwaved crap. For the last few times I've had the beef with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, which is well worth trying but last time we were there the chef told me about an addition he was making to the menu, a yorkshire pudding filled with beef in a red wine gravy served with roast potatoes and veg so we decided to try it. Crikey! It didn't look like a massive feed but I don't think I'll be moving much until tomorrow. The beef is so tasty and just melts in your mouth. The veg (sugar snap peas, and thinly sliced carrots) were done to perfection with just a little bit of bite. We'd definitely have it again. Try it, you won't be disappointed but you might need a little lie down when you're done.

Amazing Christmas afternoon tea

The place was freezing, ordered food waited nearly an hour for corned beef and potato pie with chips and gravy for both myself and my wife. Food arrived, one order with chips one with a handful of salad. The girl serving us said she'd bring the gravy. I was going to say I ordered chips with both pies but after another wait of nine minutes for the gravy to arrive we thought what's the point we'll be waiting an eternity for the second portion of chips. Chips were basic fries tasted ok, gravy ok, corned beef pie over seasoned with what I'd describe as a mountain of pepper. Not what I expected and I won't be returning.

Can't beat this place. Food is outstanding. Service lovely. Amazing value

Myself and the partner went for our breakfast really early so it was quiet we did not have to wait long for our food to be served my partner got the engine room breakfast which included haggis and black pudding and i got the full English we both walked out completely stuffed so much so we walked along the coast to get our steps in to burn some of the food off haha if i remember correctly the engine room breakfast was just under ten pound and the full English was just under eight pound the food was gorgeous the sausages were really juicy not dry at all not one complaint about cafe at the house lovely place lovely service we will definitely be popping in for the third time very soon thank you to everyone keep up the good work

I have visited for lunch a few times since discovering this hidden gem. The food is absolutely amazing. Beautiful fresh food. I have had the salads which are delicious and tasty , not your typical lettuce, tomato and cucumber etc and I had a beautiful double cheese toastie today with feta cheese, figs and olives which was absolutely gorgeous. The cakes are also beautiful. Great coffee too. Good choice on the menu and very reasonable for the quality on offer. My go to place now for lunch in South Shields.

Good food when it eventually arrived

Visited today with my husband and we were both blown away with the quality of food. I ordered the engine room breakfast and it is hands down the best breakfast I've had ever and I've had a few!!!. We also took a strawberry and ginger cheesecake home plus a Victoria sponge and they were both amazing, especially the cheesecake, so light 😋 The lady who served us (sorry didn't catch her name) was so lovely, attentive and friendly and we had a fantastic experience overall. Great value and a lovely setting. The double stuffed toasties look so good as did the other cakes and scones. I've told loads of friends and family and we will definitely be visiting often. Absolutely gem!

A community centre with parking off road for a number of vehicles. There is various clubs use this facility and there is an excellent coffee/snack bar here. There is good disabled access to the centre and is well worth a look to see what activities you can try.

I went today with 3 friends, we went for afternoon tea which was amazing, the staff were so friendly couldn't do enough for us. The food was presented well, very tasty having a wide variety of sandwiches, scones, cakes and pastries. Highly recommended whether celebrating a family occasion or just a catch up with friends. Excellent value for money, we have had a few afternoon teas and this has to be our favourite, can't wait to come back. Thank you so much to all your staff for making four old women smile.

We had heard good comments about the café so decided to try it for lunch. The menu was impressive with its simplicity and variety. The food quality was excellent the service friendly well presented. The part we sat in was on the dark side and a little bit cold. Total good experience and looking forward to returning.

Popped in for a coffee to warm up. Felt colder inside than it was outside! I seen one small heater in a huge room and the poor staff looked absolutely freezing! No wonder the place was pretty much empty.

Beautiful surroundings, found a table quickly. Ordered food and drinks. Seemed liked an eternity for them to come. Gave them benefit of the doubt since I last came, but sadly nothing has changed. It’s such a shame as the food is beautiful, but you haven’t got to be in a hurry. You need more staff. Half an hour for coffee is too much

The afternoon tea myself and daughter had recently was one of the best we have eaten. Well worth the money and the presentation was lovely.

We called in for the first time and ordered a small english breakfast (toast costs extra) not that we wanted it toasted.. A point they ignored completely. I had a toasted sandwich The food itself was OK.. The issues we had were.. I can't remember ever being served a breakfast without a pot of tea or cup of coffee included in the price.. Not once and we've dined in fancy restaurants and down beat cafes.. All serve a hot drink inclusive in the price The same with the toast/ slice of bread. My toasted sandwich had some greens on the side.. No other salad stuff. I found that bizarre.. Most places have a little salad.. Cucumber or tomatoes.. The service was extremely slow.. It took nigh on 45 minutes to get our food. The worst thing was.. We'd just started eating and we had both just taken a bite of food and one of the ladies came to our table and asked if we wanted to buy a raffle ticket.. Who does that! If you want to sell raffle tickets.. Sell them at the counter when people are paying for their food.. Never interrupt their meal.. Unless you're asking if its OK. Not that the lady asked how the meal was. I would go back.. The food itself was nicely cooked and the presentation was OK.. I can only hope their service improves and they at least include a cuppa with their breakfast meals. There isn't a great deal of choice on the menu, none of the standard meals.. Which is fair enough if that's there aim... But if I was going for lunch I'd rather go somewhere that sells an actual meal rather than their current menu. We ordered a cake to takeaway. Peach melba, I haven't had one of those since I was a kid.. They looked stunning.. Unfortunately the pastry on the base was absolutely solid.. I couldn't cut through it with the standard pastry fork I had to use a sharp knife.. I tried a tiny bit.. Nearly broke a tooth.. So that part went in the bin.. The sides were fine it was just the base. I've only ever had this kind of dessert made with sugar pastry before.. I'm not even sure what was used for the melba. We hit lucky as it was quiet when we called in... The cafe itself is beautiful.. I've given a three out of five for the overall menu choices, prices and service The food was nice.. And as I said before I'd still go back .. As a treat.

I had the best afternoon tea I have had so far. It was fresh and delicious and mostly made on the premises. The staff were efficient and friendly. I definitely recommend this cafe.

The cafe area itself was closed but they had agreed to honour bookings and had set up the function room smartly. We couldn’t fault the afternoon teas ordered, booked to avoid a Mother’s Day rush next week. Unfortunately the service was really slow and having two children in our party of five it would have been better if their meals had came before the adults. The slowness won’t stop us revisiting, hopefully the cafe will be open then for a takeaway pie (pulled pork and chorizo) for my hungry husband at home.

My daughter surprised me to a birthday tea here with family and friends. Best afternoon high tea I’ve had. Would recommend. Food was amazing. It’s a hidden gem.

The building itself is gorgeous, & as such should have the atmosphere to go with it but doesnt.The white plastic tables belong in a value cafe somewhere & the period of the place alone deserves better.Toast which comes with the breakfast arrived about 10 minutes before the breakfast & they werent that busy at that time of day, although lots of reserved tables presumably booked for Mothers Day afternoon tea.I ordered the smaller size breakfast 2 sausage, 2 pieces of bacon, which were warm but not hot though tasty enough, mushrooms ok but on a bed of braised spinach which I dont quite get. However the 2 poached eggs have to be hand on heart probably the best poached eggs I have ever been served in a restaurant (truth).Please steer clear of the coffee, I have no idea what beans they use if indeed they do as tasted like value brand instant granules.Possibly way to busy preparing for a fully booked out afternoon tea but thats no excuse.Thought I had found a hidden gem when I discovered the place but seems not.I may at some point give it another go & put it down as a one off bad day but it will be a while.

Today we went for a family birthday afternoon tea. There was 13 of us. We weren’t greeted on arrival or shown where to sit. We found our party ourselves and then sat down. We individually ordered drinks at the bar and this was the first time we seen the staff. We sat back down and then all our afternoon teas were brought out. We weren’t offered tea or coffee, as should of been considering it is refillable tea or coffees. I took it amongst myself to ask for tea at the bar and she just said “how many?” This is when another waitress said, “I’ll find out” We never had any check backs after this or asked for anymore drinks. One of the members of the party asked for more tea and coffee and gave a number of how many. This was not served to us. Then someone went to the bar for a cold drink and she was informed that they shut at 3pm, again we had not been informed of this so when we asked again where our drinks were, they said the boiler had been turned off so we wouldn’t be getting anymore.Overall, the food was nice but the customer service was shocking. We were tucked away in a back room and felt like we had been forgotten about, especially when the lights were turned off in the other room.

My chicken rice salad was really tasty and loads of it price was good. Would have preferred tea served earlier and seemed to get cold very quickly?? Lemon cake was nice but just a tad dry but overall enjoyed it x

I met with an old friend for brunch and was impressed from start to finish. We ordered bacon and egg poached toasted muffins with Monterey cheese and coffee. The prices are brilliant, quality excellent and the staff pleasant and professional. They had a great selections of cakes, sandwiches and meals. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

We Visited here today (13/02/2019) for the first time, it looked fantastic on Facebook, but I must admit I was not overwhelmed and will not make the long drive to visit again.

Waited a good while to be served with my order which was only a coffee and a scone. The scone was very good when it finally arrived.

Unbelievable food , popped in for a breakfast and coffee . Had the most wonderful breakfast and also left with 3 amazing salads and 2 cakes for home .

I went with a friend for the festive afternoon tea. We were greeted warmly and our table was reserved.We were then served a delicious gingerbread hot chocolate while we waited. The food arrived and what a spectacle, delicious looking food, decorated with glitter and festive decoration, draped in fairy lights. We didn't know where to start! The food was delicious, the pastries warm and melted in your mouth, cute little sandwiches. We couldn't eat everything, so had to make tough decisions! The little cakes were rich and Devine! I had to bring my scone home, but that looks beautiful too. We were provided boxes for our take home treats.

went here with my wife daughter son and his wife what can i say i was told about this place but had never heard of it glad we went soon as we went in greeted by a young lady very pleasant and showed us to our seat took our order tea or coffee and then the owner i persume brought out the afternoon tea owe my god plenty of sandwiches and scones and quiche sausage roll piece of pie and sherry trifle then she brought cakes out could not eat it all so we packed it all up and took it home we will be returning little gem

Visited cafe for the first time on Monday the toasties we had were delicious and very resonably priced,on the way out my wife got her eye on some nice looking cakes,she decided to buy one but was shocked to be charged £3.50 ,compared to the price of the toasties and other items on show we think the cakes are grossly over priced.EHH

Went for breakfast with 2 year old and partner. The breakfast was lovely and very reasonably priced. We all enjoyed what we had. We had a bit of a wait before it was served but loved the breakfast and will definitely return.

Visited at lunchtime for afternoon tea, it was beautifully presented with a great selection of sandwiches, pastries, scones and cakes. Additional pots of tea were provided and my daughter had the chicken nuggets and chips which again looked beautiful. There was so much food that we took away what was left as we were all so full. Would recommend anyone to have the afternoon tea and you would not be disappointed.

On booking I was advised I was in for a treat, however this was an understatement. The presentation, quality and quantity of food is phenomenal. The sandwich fillings were well thought out and complimentary to each other, extremely tasty and moist. The pork pie had a chutney and pomegranate topping, what I thought was a sausage roll was in fact feta and caramelised onion, both were warm and delicious. A mini quiche completed the lower tier. Middle tier comprised of: Scones (Cherry and Sultana), Lurpak butter, small jar of Tiptree jam and small Kilner jar of clotted cream. Fresh strawberry was decorated with red edible glitter - lovely and sweet. Top layer contained two macarons (beautiful texture, best I've ever tasted). Passion Fruit Cake, Chocolate Slice with raspberry on top, Pistachio cake, glazed chocolate dome. As the food is so plentiful we were offered boxes to take our food home. I would highly recommend this cafe to everyone and will be definitely returning. As a side note they also offer Gluten Free Afternoon Tea.

An excellent venue for a well presented and hot breakfast. Excellent friendly staff so helpful and nothing a bother. Would recommend this to anyone. Close to the metro station and a short walk to the town centre.

What a lovely selection of sandwhiches, pastries and cakes, very nicely presented. We booked in advance and had a lovely table in the back room. Service was excellent, plenty of tea or coffee, if you don’t manage to eat everything they provide boxes so you can take it home.

I came in here on Saturday 24th March with my daughter since i was up to South Shields for the weekend from West Yorkshire. This place was a complete disorganised chaos. People who worked there had no clue how to use the " tablet " complaining amongst themselves about it not being on " charge " Then staff shouting at other staff.. It was the complete shambles!

I go to trinity lodge quite often with friends for lunch. Normally have jacket potatoe as I have an intolerance to gluten. Today there was only one jacket pot left so I decided to have something else. The lady there has the same condition as me so she suggested the chicken salad and brown rice. I read over the menu and there was no gluten in it or nuts as I have a reaction to cashew nuts. So that was fine. When our food arrived very well presented. I started to eat the salad. Half way threw the salad I felt my lip tingling. Then my throat get hot. I checked the salad and someomeone who I know now was the owner Michael had put the cashew nuts in the lettuce. I had to run to the toilet as the make me very sick. I was sick about three times. I left my lunch and asked to speed to the manager who was Michael. He was very rude said I should have said I had a nut allergie. There was no nuts on the menu showing for this meal. I’ve never seen such an unprofessional attitude by a manager. I’ve had to go to an emergencie doctor at trinity doctors surgery at laygate as my throat and tongue was swelling and burning. I received an injection right away to stop me from choking. NOT ONCE DID THE MANAGER APOLOGISE. SO there will be no next time for me back to this restaurant.

Love this cafe extensive inexpensive menu cooked to order. My favourite being the sweet chilli chicken salad very tasty indeed. The sandwiches are also very tasty and a little more imaginative than the norm. The cafe is part of a community centre and is a little gem of a place served by the most efficient young man ever so polite and cares passionately about his customers he is a real tonic in this day and age and is always a pleasure to chat with him. I haven't (as yet) sampled the afternoon tea there but have seen others participating and they look amazing this is definitely on my list to try.
