Very poor customer service from male staff at takeaway counter would give no stars if could needs to be retrained on customer service will not be going back

My partner and I visited this restaurant last night having been once previously some time ago. It’s a lovely setting but the service was very slow. We both ordered a main course, 1x cod and chips and 1x fish curry. Prices weren’t cheap as we expected. After our meal we were not asked if we wanted another drink or dessert and asked for the bill eventually. We were surprised that the cod and chips did not automatically come with peas and there was an additional charge of £1.95 for a very small portion of peas.. it could have been a better experience.

Went today with a family party of 22! Some in laws visiting from Hong Kong. We wanted to treat them to a typical Geordie lunch, fish and chips and Dandelion and Burdock. We arrived in dribs and drabs due to searching for parking spaces. Our delightful waitress Daphne kept patiently updating our drink order as people arrived (We had pre ordered our meal so that wasn't a problem) Daphne gave us all a glass and tin pitchers of cold water without us asking for it this practice has disappeared since I was a Maitre d and it was a nice touch because restaurants never usually do this and would rather sell you expensive drinks. We had had a wedding at The Crowne Plaza on Saturday £35 for middle of the road wines for instance. Daphne got every order spot on and there were a lot of differences, gravy, curry sauce etc. We had an excellent meal as usual and our Chinese guests were very impressed. Thank you Daphne you were a star.

The place is impressive, with that dome and that huge hall. It is a special and beautiful place, and both the food and the service are magnificent.

Incredibly slow service. Restaurant was not busy. Food average. Curry sauce lovely. Mushy peas cold. No spoons for sauces or dessert. Had to get up and ask for more drinks. Drinks sat on bar for 20minutes whilst staff stood next to them chatting. We had to get up to get them. Coffee machine broken. In a restaurant like this should not expect to be told it will be over 1 week before it’s fixed. Staff started clearing table away before everyone had finished their meal. Felt that was rude and unprofessional. Got rushed out restaurant as near closing time so unable to finish drinks we had waited so long for despite others customers still being in restaurant. Unlikely to return as whole party was complaining about service.

We had the most delightful evening meal. From the moment we walked into the magnificent dining room, we knew we were in for a treat. The service was excellent and the fish and chips superb. A thoroughly enjoyable time, made better by the Maitre d’ and his knowledge of the Spanish City’s history

After several previous visits all of which were 9/10 we went on 31/7 and were disappointed with the food. Small Cod with poor quality batter which was well below the usual standard for this Restaurant. Half of the chips were good but the remainder were very scrappy and were left. Staff and service was very good as usual. We will return and hope for better luck next time. Maybe just a one off! DAC.

Its a Beautiful building nice and airy and spacious inside .The food is lovely. Last week when we went they gave us a booth , which was not appropriate as we had 2 disabled people n wheel chairs and 2 kids in a high chairs . I booked the venue and got there later than the rest, disappointed they had been put there .

Back from a delicious meal tonight at Trenchers. We took my partner’s mam for her birthday as she loves the piano man and his lovely music. Once again he didn’t disappoint. The staff were so hospitable, the food was delicious. I had the vegan fish & chips and it was the best I’ve had. Everyone’s meals were lovely, as was the wine and the liqueur coffees to finish.

AVOID THIS COMPANY IF YOU CAN, they employ malicious car parking tactic of which will result in you receiving a big fine, even over staying the car park by 1 minute. Was ok. I've had better fish and chips from South Shields. In spite of that, the chips were still ok and the venue is fabulous and also great value. Worth visiting. There's some good offers on for kids and OAPs as well. Having to pay for parking and I was 10 minutes over my stay. Turned into a ccj etc. Disgusting

It is not worth the risk - i.e. i over stayed my car park which resulted in me receiving a 60 GBP fine. most businesses allow you to redeem cashback on car park purchases, or waver the costs, THIS BUSINESS DOES NOT, it seeks to earn additional revenue via their car park, which has been leased out. i will not be going for fish and chips again

Whilst their chips are nice, the fact that you cannot park for free and they employ the tactics of a destasteful car parking management company (clearly for extra revenue) which resulted in myself receiving a ccj due to myself working abroad. This all happened within 8months. In despite of paying a car park fee, I over ran by 10 minutes. Quite frankly, paying to visit twice. Just go elsewhere, not worth the risk

Visited 12pm on a Monday. Was seated straight away and food and drinks ordered promptly. Served initially by Daphne who was excellent. Food arrived after about a 15 minute wait 1 regular cod, 1 regular haddock and one large cod, all with chips and different sides. Food was excellent fresh and piping hot. Only 2 very small pick up points. It was quite cold due to air conditioning and the large cod was about the same as the regular cod. Couldn't comment on price as daughter was treating us. I have noticed a lot of the poor reviews involved the staff. On our visit ALL the staff were excellent.

We must have been there on an off day. It wasn't busy yet we waited 20 minutes for coffee and desert. There was no rapport or friendliness from the waiter. When we were ready to pay he continued inputting information into the computer and didn't even look up. He eventually acknowledged our presence when we commented on the delay.

Stumbled on this place by chance. Lovely food and lovely staff and not expensive. The surroundings are lavish and the whole experience was just spot on.

Did not eat but coffees/hot chocolate delicious and the atmosphere is pure elegance.

Took my friends from Germany for a fish and chip lunch and it was excellent I can not praise it enough every thin from your greeting and wonderful service made a really lovely day

Staying in Whitley Bay, we visited this unique restaurant within the Spanish City. It was a very special experience to enjoy excellent fish and chips and burgers, sitting under the dome. We were lucky to have the resident pianist playing that night. Couldn't fault the food, it was delicious and well presented. We were looked after by the wonderful Daphne throughout our meal.. what a great evening!

Food freshly cooked so nice and hot. Chips a bit dry for my liking but very nice fish. You queue to order and they bring it out to you. Very popular

They had a great children's menu which was reasonably priced, they even had colouring and children's cutlery! Fantastic. The food was good, not earth shattering but nice. The staff were all delightful.

Just had a first experience of Trenchers restaurant and it certainly will not be the last visit. We had vegetable Goan curry and a fish pie, both were excellent. Staff offered a first class experience from start to finish, especially attentive was Daphne. Looking forward to our next visit.

Wonderful setting and excellent fish and chips, only disappoitment was the very thin and cheap bread and butter, totally at odds with the rest of the food and atmosphere an easy fix I would hope. Definitely worth a visit food and service excellent

Where do I start?! We went for lunch today and it was delicious! It was a lovely treat, the food was lovely and the place was immaculate. Daphne the waitress (scouser) was so friendly. She made our boys laugh and was so friendly. I couldn't decide between two food choices and she helped. Would recomend going here! Thanks Daph and Trenchersnfor making our visit wonderful.

Really disappointed. Wanted this place to be what I thought was overrated. Boy was I wrong. Outstanding food best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Lovely atmosphere staff are really nice. Will deffo be back to try the steak pie (it’s Good Friday I did the right thing!). Thank you guys! ❤️

Came for a celebration lunch for my parents 50th wedding anniversary. Food was excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful.we had some special requests of which nothing was too much trouble..thank you.

So very disappointed. On my last visit to Whitley Bay I raved about this restaurant and recommended it to everyone I knew. That was pre Covid. For the last four years I haven’t been able to return due to a number of reasons and I was desperately looking forward to fish and chips. The fish was bland and tasted like it had been frozen, chips were warm not hot. I ordered haddock and my husband cod. He had the same complaint. On top of the food being so so. The parking is terrible. Being from overseas the parking meter wouldn’t take my card. A friendly family helped me sort out the correct cash and work out the meter. Which they also had problems with. Why doesn’t a restaurant like that offer free parking for dinners? On top of that, even though I had paid, put my ticket in the car window, we still received a parking ticket. No proof that we paid because I had to pay in cash and we cleared out the car and didn’t keep the ticket, when we handed the hire car in!

We have visited Whitby many times and it is one of our favourite fish and chips restaurants. The fish and chips were great, but the service less so. The restaurant was not busy. Quite a few tables half cleaned. Staff no where to be seen. There only seemed to be one person running round. Every time he ran past our table he apologized and said he would be right with us. From sitting down to having our order taken took for ever. When the food arrived it was fine. Having finished again to have the table cleared again took ages. I ordered a dessert. When our bill arrived the dessert and extra drinks were missing from the bill.

Only called in for a coffee. Really nice, and friendly staff.

Wonderful friendly service, delicious food! Our waitress Daphne was incredibly helpful and was able to quickly suggest the perfect adaptation with the menu so my mom could get the meal she wanted. Thank you for making it such a fun visit too with how you chatted with us, you helped it be a really special, relaxed mother's day celebration!

Delicious fish and chips with quality mushy peas, fresh fish, freshly cooked. Tea not strong enough for my liking but extra tea bags produced without fuss. Callum our waiter could not have been more pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. Excellent service.

The food is traditional and tasty. It's reasonably priced as well and is such a nice building staff very friendly and helpful

Lovely meal, HUGE fish finger sarnies (fish fillets in a stottie cake - delish!) Beautiful surroundings, lovely scouse waitress - this place would’ve got 5 stars if it hadn’t been for the lukewarm welcome we got when we first went in….I know it was busy but we were totally blanked by at least 2 members of staff, and were at the point of leaving when the nice waitress saved the day! A simple ‘Hello, can you just give me a minute, and someone will be with you?’ can go a long way….. anyway, we’ll deffo be back!

Terrible food on Sunday afternoon, cod seemed to be mainly batter and when there was some fish it was rubbery and as if it had been refried! Cod bites had been taken out too early and neither were hot - definitely won't return.

Stopped for 2 kids meals and waited outside for nearly 45 minutes with small children. Don't go unless your prepared to wait as they are cooking as requested nothing is ready . Will not be going back and we live local

We go here quite regularly. It's a bit hit and miss on service and food. When it's good it's great.

I went with my family for the first time. Fish was ok. Chips were a touch dry. It was expensive for what we got, £90 for 5 fish and chips. Parking is available, and payment is by an app/online.

If we’re in Whitley bay we have to stop by this Beautiful place with delicious food. Also we were served by the amazing Daphne who we made aware of our autistic child’s needs and she just goes up and beyond to make sure we enjoyed ourselves every time we visit. We as a family feel comfortable and relaxed and that is down to Daphnes loving nature and understanding our sons needs. Amazing lady ❤️

Really great staff. Good fish and chips - and you can decide between cod or haddock rather than undefined fish. And an impressive building and room to eat in.

Usually enjoy our lunch here after a walk along the coast from Tynemouth. Today was different! Shown to our table and then waited 10 minutes to give our order. Four members of staff did their best to avoid eye contact with us even though there were only 3 other tables occupied by customers. When the food arrived there was no bread and butter or ketchup so we had to ask for it again, we did receive two portions of tartare sauce. None of the condiments had a spoon with them to serve it. The cod and chips was okay but the scampi contained some large pieces which turned out to be two bits of scampi covered in crumbs and then fried together. Unfortunately these pieces were gooey and unpleasant inside. Pointed them out to the waitress but she said the chef could assure me they were fully cooked. I wasn’t convinced ☹️. Chips were a bit scratty too. Expensive meal for such poor quality and service, think we’ll be looking for an alternative venue.

first visit to Trenchers -- fish and chips ( medium cod) was served by lovely staff and was just right--home made tartare sauce really good --puds were lovely too -- only thing on this very cold day was that the restaurant was very cold --we got 25% off bill as gold members of Spanish City and it was worth the money

My husband and I together with 2 friends went to this restaurant last night. We had a warm welcome and once settled at our table our server arrived to take our drinks order followed shortly afterwards by our food order. Food arrived in a timely manner, was piping hot and well cooked. 3 of us had desserts which were delicious. 2 servers attended our table, both were friendly and efficient. Shout out to Daphne who went above and beyond to make our evening an enjoyable experience.

Beautiful meal. The fish sharing platter was a delight and the oysters were fresh and tasty. Tempura batter on fish was melt in the mouth. We will definitely be going back 😊

Food good (tradition fried items) but atmosphere quite bland and room has canteen feel. Champagne bar is underwhelming - a room with a bar. Shame the refurbishment hasn’t made more of the stunning internal features of the building.

We found a branch of the Trenchers of Whitby at Whitley Bay provided a similar excellent quality of food and service! It's good for family, groups or even for a couple who want to enjoy a quiet time. The seating arrangement could be done upon request. For a quiet table, ask for the table in the ring of the 2nd floor. The accessible entrance is available via the Valerie’s bakery next door.

Fantastic quality lunch. We both had the fish pie which was one of best we've had. Had a thin crispy layer of potato and cheese on top (not 1" thick like a lot of places!) breaking through to sumptuous fish and prawn chunks in delicious...

Perfectly cooked fish (haddock) and chips. We indulged and had puddings too - the sherry trifle was outstanding! Lovely, friendly service, couldn't fault it. All under the iconic dome of the Spanish City - definitely go.

Absolutely amazing breakfast with Santa!!! I turned up a day late 🫣 absolutely gutted! But Debbie got us in regardless without hesitation! Most places would have no doubt turned us away! Food was excellent - however the portions were small. Large cod and chips was about the size of a medium fish and small chips. Chicken wing starter was £8 for 3 wings. Service was charming but slightly amateur, with order mix ups and long waits for 2nd round of drinks (we had finished food by time they arrived) It's a huge room, so atmosphere can be difficult - they were playing music, but this was virtually imperceptible. I'll be back but I hope it improves.

Absolutely shocking!! Went for a festive Christmas lunch and have to say it’s just about the worst we’ve ever had! Prawn cocktail was ok , but the main meal dreadful! Had turkey escalope.. completely tasteless, served on a bed of boiled parsnips, sprouts and carrots...

Disappointing. Ordered scampi, had to order a side of peas as no veg or salad included. Was disappointed to be served chip shop chips. My daughter had steak, which they said they couldn't cook to medium, only medium rare or well done. For £23 why...

Freezing, overpriced, rude staff. Place had a great deal of character to be fair. Had to ask for condiments after food was delivered, inclusive tartar sauce missing off each plate, then when asked, they brought a small ramekin dish between 4 main meals! No point...

First and last time I would ever order from the Trenchers. Name goes with food. Chips half cooked not to mention portion size is ridiculously small. 3 tiny cod bite with 3 small prawns and chips £20. And which bright spark thought it was good idea to put two cold cans in a bad with hot food think ill stick to coastline on blyth beach always on point. Treanches total £50 Food wasted

Three of us Visited for a late lunch 29th November. Carrot & coriander soup then two Fish & chips & one battered sausage & chips plus sides. All meals were very nice but the restaurant was freezing & a lot of customers including ourselves were sat with coats on. I'm a slow eater so my meal was had gotten cold before I could finish it. The staff were polite & helpful.

We had a terrific lunch before going to the Christmas market at the Spanish City. The fish and chips were spot on, the soup was really tasty and the espresso martini was great. The wine was nice and cold.

We visited the Xmas market upstairs and stopped off here by chance for some fish and chips. The service started great but fell apart at the end when we waited an unnecessarily long time to get the bill, to the point I was going to get up and try and actually find someone! We found the haddock delicious and fresh with a light crispy batter but were left disappointed by the portion size and quality of the chips, which at £15 per shot is not good enough. It wasn’t just a small portion of chips, but a portion that had its fair share of scraps and bits of potato you don’t really want to find in a up-market fish and chip shop. The tartar sauce and mushy peas were decent enough but we left feeling a tad underwhelmed at the end. The meal went cold quickly as the plates weren’t heated. The most remarkable part of the experience was the building, its high roof and large Xmas tree.

More than half empty on a Friday., tells you something. Food disappointing.Fabulous building.. Nice puddings. Tea awful.

Lovely setting just a shame about the food. My wife had a hair in her chips and the waiter couldn’t have cared less. Curry sauce wasn’t very nice, and the potion size on the chips wasn’t very big at all. My son had a child’s meal and he had more chips than me, I was very disappointed as we visited Trenchers in Whitby recently and it was so much nicer.

We visited Trenchers again after a bit of a break and they did not let us down the fish and chips were excellent and Daphne who showed us to our table was marvellous throughout the evening. We will certainly be going back soon.

Ordered Salmon and Haggis was just like mush in plastic and the salmon that was supposed to be hot was cold the server seemed to be in a hurry to get us out and wasn't interested in our issues very disappointed as we have been several times and it's always been really good

What a complete and utter disappointment this place ended up being. Upon arriving, we were eventually greeted by a front of house person who asked us to walk while a table was available in 5 minutes, he then wondering off for 10 minutes, then some...

This is a fabulous venue right on the coast and the Friday evening pianist added an extra touch of class. The fish and chips were OK, nothing spectacular and 1.75 for mushy peas was pushing it a bit! Would recommend some staff training regarding how customers are spoken to and a smile or some pleasantries would go down well. Two separate orders were mixed up by staff not being knowledgeable about the menu and questioning our orders in quite an unfriendly way. This is not what I'd expect and lets down the restaurant and the Geordie culture which is known for its friendliness.

It isn't cheap but it's absolutely worth every penny! This restaurant is set inside Spanish City which is a super impressive venue both from the outside and inside. Spacious and clean, with excellent service. The food was outstanding, some of the freshest and tastiest cod we've ever had. Would totally recommend a visit.

Called for a birthday celebration. Service was excellent with staff being very pleasant. We all had fish and chips which were very nice. Because it was a birthday celebration and we had joined the loyalty scheme we also got a free bottle of prosecco which was an added bonus. Only disappointment was that no loyalty points were added to my account when paying the bill. Although they weren't certain the staff seemed to think it was because the free bottle was give though they weren't convincing. I'd be interested to know if that was the case.

We visited this restaurant on the 19.08.23 and we were very happy with the service and the food and it was very easy to get my mother in law into the restaurant as she is Disabled and in a wheelchair we ordered 3 drinks,2 regular fish and chips and a small fish and chips with 2 portions of peas and a curry sauce,we then ordered 2 desserts a Nicker blocker glory which was done very well and a chocolate fudge brownie with custard, a big thank you to all the staff and well done 👍👌❤️

Near the Spanish City we found this fish and chips shop with outside sitting on wooden benches. Great views and a lovely place with tasty fish good size and well cooked. The chips were also very nice but overpriced for the quantity. We had it taken away and condiments were offered in a station to help ourselves.

On entering we were given a poor seat where throughout the night waiters would congregate directly behind me, talking loudly and being generally overbearing. I asked to be moved to another vacant seat nearby but was told they were reserved. My menu card was dirty but we ordered and the food came quickly (my order was wrong). Food was nice but my partners fish finger sandwich had a number of large bones in it. The building is fantastic and the entertainment was good. At the end of the night whilst leaving I noticed that the “reserved” table had still not been occupied. Customer Service - Poor, Food - Average, Venue - Fantastic. Won’t be rushing back any time soon!!!

Didn’t have the soft drink I wanted from the menu. Got my order wrong, took a while to get served and have salt and pepper. Asked a question to two staff but they didn’t get back to me. Nice surroundings and the food (fish & chip lunch) was OK.

The day of FIFTEEN QUID fish and chips has arrived. I'll be generous and say the food was 'average' but it all tasted somewhat bitter - it wasn't even a large portion for that extraordinary price. We only went because of the big poster in the window that it was a National Fish and Chips Award winner in 2020. I can only imagine they've massively increased their prices since to trade off that, because I can't imagine what we ate winning any award other than the wooden spoon.

Very friendly and helpful staff - from table booking (Charlotte ?) to customer service. Special thanks to Joe and Sanita who solved a problem which was of our own making ! Excellent food and quick service (availability of gluten free, also a bonus). Pleasant surroundings and atmosphere. Clean and tidy environment. Would highly recommend and will certainly return.

We visited here on Saturday evening, there were 4 of us and we have allergies. The staff were great at sorting what we could eat and made sure the chefs knew what we couldn't eat. The food came quite quickly but we seemed to wait along time for extra drinks, then maybe 30 minutes for our dessert order to be taken. Then 20 minutes for the bill. But all our food was great.

It seems to be an upmarket chipshop but that doesn't take away from the quality of food we enjoyed here. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. The food was served very efficiently and correctly. Good sized deserts too. When we went there was also a live pianist which added to the atmosphere.
