Our experience at the 1910 Restaurant and Champagne Bar on Friday, August 23rd, was nothing short of disastrous. What was meant to be a special celebration of our wedding anniversary turned into an evening marred by incompetence, poor service, and lacklustre food quality that left us deeply disappointed and frustrated. The evening began with a Champagne Bar reservation at 7.30pm, a time we specifically chose to enjoy a leisurely drink before dinner. However, upon arrival at the Champagne Bar, we were met with disorganisation; no seat had been prepared for us. Instead, we were told to sit wherever there was space, an instruction that hardly conveys a sense of hospitality or preparation. Despite this rocky start, we decided to make the best of it and enjoyed three cocktails, but even this moment of enjoyment was cut short. About 30 minutes before our 9pm dinner reservation, a member of staff hurriedly ushered us towards the dining area as if we were being hurried through an airport security checkpoint rather than into what is supposed to be a fine dining experience. Once seated, it became immediately clear that we were the last diners of the night, and the staff seemed more interested in closing up than providing an enjoyable dining experience. The atmosphere was akin to eating in the middle of a chaotic house move, with tables being flipped and furniture rearranged all around us. Any semblance of a relaxing evening was obliterated by the staff’s blatant haste to wrap things up. Our meal began with some snacks – olives and almonds – which arrived just moments before our starters were unceremoniously plopped onto the table. There was no time to enjoy our snacks as intended. The starters themselves were mediocre at best. The prawn tempura I ordered was greasy and overcooked, hardly the hallmark of a restaurant that purportedly specialises in seafood. The real travesty, however, came with the main course. After my trip to the restroom, I returned to find my steak sitting on the table, getting cold—a cardinal sin in any dining establishment, let alone one that claims to offer fine dining. Both my wife and I had ordered medium-rare steaks, but what we received were burnt, overcooked slabs of meat that were fully dark grey through the middle, devoid of any juiciness or flavour. The steaks were tough, chewy, and inedible—a shocking outcome from a restaurant that supposedly prides itself on its steak and seafood offerings. When we brought this to the attention of our waiter, he agreed the steaks were overdone and took them back to the kitchen. To add insult to injury, he removed our snacks along with the uneaten meals, robbing us of the small pleasure of enjoying them with our wine. We were left waiting for 35 minutes—an inexplicably long time for a steak to be cooked medium-rare. This delay only reinforced our suspicion that the chef had left for the evening, leaving a junior or inexperienced member of the team to handle our order. When our second steaks finally returned, they were no better than the first attempt. The meat was again severely overcooked, dry, and utterly unappetising. The sides were equally disappointing, appearing as if they had been hastily boiled without any seasoning or care. Once again, we pointed out the issue, and this time the general manager, Chris, came over. His approach was more concerned with closing the restaurant than with making any real effort to rectify the situation or salvage our evening. He removed the food from our bill but still charged us for the wine and cocktails. No gesture was made to acknowledge the disastrous experience we had endured, nor was there any attempt to offer a complimentary drink, dessert, or even a sincere apology. A wedding anniversary is a once-a-year event, a special occasion meant to be celebrated and cherished. Instead, we were sent away feeling dejected, hungry, and utterly disappointed. We had travelled six hours from the South Coast, leaving our children with family in Whitley Bay, only to have our evening ruined by a restaurant that clearly places more value on closing up early than on customer satisfaction. The following morning, I wrote to the owners of the Spanish City establishment to express my dissatisfaction, but as of now, I have yet to receive a response. This complete disregard for customer feedback only cements my view that 1910 Restaurant and Champagne Bar is an establishment that has lost sight of what it means to provide quality service and fine dining. In conclusion, I would strongly advise anyone considering a 9pm reservation at the 1910 Restaurant and Champagne Bar for a special occasion to reconsider. The poor service, lack of attention to detail, and subpar food quality make it a place to avoid if you value your time, money, and memorable experiences. We certainly won’t be returning, and we can only hope that this review serves as a wake-up call to the management to seriously reassess their operations before more customers are left with similarly bitter memories.

Lovely location and view. The pubs and restaurants at the Spanish City all look nice and well frequented. At 1910, we had 3 courses and even with the £10 supplement for the lobster, so £46 each the food and service was good. Would recommend, it's the best restaurant in Whitley Bay.

I went to this restaurant after reading its good reviews. Excellent location in Whitley Bay. When I arrived it was empty, they treated me well, very friendly, I ordered a mojito and battered shrimp and fish. It seemed like they had some problem with the cocktail since it arrived when I was half eaten. Food; fried food, a couple of prawns and a few fried pieces of fish accompanied by french fries and a bit of salad, nothing special for almost 20 punds. I don't think I would go back.

It was our first visit to 1910 tonight, and blimey, what a let down. The 'Champagne Bar' was very similar in appearance and ambience to a Travel Lodge bar. First impression of walking into the restaurant, was that it was rather 'bland', and devoid of atmosphere and character. I had the cheese soufflé to start, which was nice enough, albeit rather oily. When the main course arrived, I could not believe my eyes! I was absolutely astounded at the minute portion of fish on my plate. It's no exaggeration to say that the two pieces of plaice were not much bigger than minnows. There was one Jersey Royal potato, cut lengthways into three pieces, and one sprig of tenderstem broccoli. I'm a petite female and have quite a small appetite, but this did not even touch the sides. Needless to say, we didn't bother with dessert. I can't understand anyone raving highly about this restaurant, it must be a case of 'The Emperor's New Clothes' kind of thing. The saving grace was the stunning view of our beautiful coastline.

I’m not a big fan of Sunday lunches at the best of times, so I’m perhaps a stern critic. ‘Average’, is the word that springs instantly to mind. I’ll start with the positives, because it’s nice to be nice. The service was overall decent. The staff were well presented and generally quite attentive. They did commit the (in my opinion) cardinal sin of making us wait to pay, to the point that we went to the bar to pay on our way out. It is my firm belief that if, upon production of a bill, a restaurant does not attempt to collect payment within 15 minutes, you should be legally entitled to walk out. If I ever find myself in politics, it will be on this platform. I don’t want to let this mar what was overall a good dining experience though, and the venue has obviously gone to lengths to train their staff in proper table service, cutlery replacement etc which you don’t see much these days – at least not where I typically scran. I had the lamb for the main course. It was nice, but that is about as far as my adjectives can be pushed. The towering Yorkshire Pudding acted as a centerpiece of the meal and sparked my excitement, only to be dismayed as I choked down bone-dry mouthfuls. I would like to review the vegetables for you, but this is difficult given that there were barely any in attendance. As the small platter was set down between five of us, I naturally assumed we’d be given one each. We weren't. This platter/very small oval dish consisted of about five baby carrots, a spoonful of cabbage and…well, I’m not sure. There may have been other vegetables available, but clearly, they were gone before the platter/very small oval dish arrived at my seat. Luckily, I was out with my partners family and my manners were at 100%. Had it been my own family there would have been savage fights over a reasonable share of carrots. There was a similar tray of green vegetables, but ask yourself, who really wants to eat these except out of grim compliance to societal expectation? The most abundant dish on the table was the cauliflower cheese, I think I got a spoonful and a half. Finally, the roast potatoes. The true foundation of a good Sunday roast. A perfectly cooked leg of lamb or a perfectly pink-in-the-middle piece of roast beef can steal the show, but the roasties are always there, doing the hard work, making the meat look good. I got two of them. This is the first Sunday roast I’ve ever left without a bulging waistband. I turned up for stodge, and this I did not get. The actual restaurant itself wasn’t too much to look at from the inside. The saving grace is of course the glorious view of the coastline, but that is obvious cheating. You can’t ride on Mother Nature’s coat tails and expect to get a pass on the ambience and décor. A lot of white (or versions of white), and no character. Then again, who is paying for character when you’ve got that view? Between the small portions, great staff service and the automatic bragging rights of having been to the Spanish City, this is the perfect place to take a grandparent, which is exactly what we were doing. She loved it, in fairness. Personally, I’m not averse to going back if invited, but won’t be planning on returning of my own volition.

We booked for Sunday lunch yesterday and everything was spot on/faultless. Had a drink in the Champagne Bar first then went through to the restaurant where we were greeted and taken to our table by Andrew. Ordered starters (calamari and prawn cocktail) followed by roast beef and roast lamb. The food (and accompanying vegetables inc cauliflower cheese) was lovely and we had a bottle of red wine to wash it down 😉 Decided to also go for dessert and we had crème brûlée and sticky toffee pud - both of which were fantastic. Top service and food - would not hesitate to recommend and excellent value for £36 pp for three courses.

This restaurant boasts beautiful views of Whitley bay sea front. I had high expectations from reading reviews and looking through photos. For starter I had the soup which was described as having mussels scallops and prawns. Now this must be a typo because what was served can only be described as tinned soup with one tiny prawn, one tiny mussel and I couldn’t find any scallops until the last few spoon fulls but I kid you not it was the tiniest scallop know to man kind! So disappointing. The starter is normally my favourite part of a meal but not today. It was almost as if the chef was playing a joke on me. The lack of seafood was laughable and frankly embarrassing. I’d probably take the dish off the menu or at least describe it correctly to avoid others from being disappointed. I understand that seafood is expensive I would sooner pay a supplement on the set menu than serve one sad mussel, scallop and prawn. On a separate note the one mussel I had was overly fishy and tasted a little sour. It was rancid, I hope I’m not ill tomorrow. Not a great start 1910! My partner ordered a twice baked cheddar soufflé which was divine! We both opted for the confit shoulder of lamb roast dinner. 10 out of 10! The meat was delicious and tender, the potatoes were creamy and seasoned well. The gravy was the show stopper. It was rich with depth of flavour that filled my mouth with joy and the cauliflower cheese was one of the best I’ve tasted. Service was standard. Will I go back? Definitely to order the soufflé and the lamb, This restaurant describes its self as a steak and seafood restaurant and from my experience the seafood side leaves a lot to be desired.

We live in Whitley Bay and when one of my wife’s cousins came to visit us , we wanted to make sure we showed off our lovely hometown to its best. It was a no brainier to book a table at 1910 for dinner one Friday evening. A great night isn’t just about the meal for me. It starts when you arrive at the Dome, when you see the sea and the coastline and when you enter the building and hear the pianist playing. It gets better when you go upstairs and enter the bar and see the view. Through to the restaurant and it’s better again with a table in the window looking out towards the lighthouse. Staff were excellent. Service was very welcoming and (having visited before), I can say there’s been a big step up in this respect. Well done. We had the early evening menu. It’s great value and no compromise on quality. Wines were reasonable and at under £9 for a glass of champagne, you can treat yourself. On our previous visit, the food exceeded our expectations and it did so again this time with one small exception. My sea bream was terrific but my wife thought the steak tasty but on the tough side. A shame as the rest of the meal was a joy. A couple of notes if you plan to visit - it’s only open for dinner at weekends and you can’t reserve a window table. Whilst every table has a view, not every diner at every table does so just be aware. Our bill for three diners was great value - we’ve paid the same just for two in many places. A leisurely 2 hour dinner was topped off when staff all wished us goodnight as we left - and it seemed very genuine. Highly recommended.

Only a slight criticism is the chips believe it or not, could do with triple cooked ones like most restaurants or even go for fries if you’re not keen but I wouldn’t mark them down on chips as it’s an individual thing isn’t it. Others may love them. Our main server was Ryan who was professional from start to finish along with the other staff. Wow, what a fabulous restaurant, with a beautiful sea view, lovely friendly staff and just the place for a very special evening. The only down side for me is that parking is a pain although it does have a car-park attached so other than that one gripe, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. As we were guests of our friend I can't comment on value for money but we enjoyed the evening so much so that my wife chose 1910 Steak and Seafood for her 79th birthday treat. I had the fish soup to start, followed by the half-lobster thermidor and finished with cheese and biscuits. My wife had the soufflé to start, the roast north sea cod and fished with the apple and hazelnut tart. We all had a delicious "amuse bouche" before our starters and an equally enjoyable palate cleanser before our desserts. We had a really lovely meal and will return. but only for special occasions, otherwise it won't special!

Absolutely lovely place to eat inside and the views of the coast are spectacular. Lovely 3 course Sunday dinner ( its what it's called up here still ). Had a souffle starter, with a Turkey dinner and Prauline truffle too finish, it was gorgeous. The staff are great, very helpful, pleasant, and a real positive for the restaurant. We'll definitely be back.

I went for dinner last night with friends, and the food was amazing However after our main course, none of the staff came back to our table to offer a desert menu or offer more drinks. We waited over 45 mins and no one came back, so we eventually just asked for the bill Can't fault the food which was delicious but we were a bit disappointed with the service!

We visited for afternoon tea. We have been 3 times and each time it is fantastic. It is the best afternoon tea we've had. The gluten free afternoon tea is just as fantastic and isn't compromised at all. The service is good, nobody rushes you and the view over the sea front just helps add to the experience.

We came here from Newcastle centre to have some fresh seafood and Riley’s Fish Shop was an excellent choice in all aspects! We had a nice friendly chat with lady staff before our lunch started. Smooth wine and oysters of both types on offer were a must (not local catch but Irish and Channel). Then we prudently went through all the small dish menu :-) Especially scallops were absolutely splendid. Booking is recommended. Next time im here, I will be back for sure! Thank you :-)
