Trenchers in Scarborough

Classic seaside Chippy vibe. Restaurant couldn't accommodate my friends and I as it was busy so we did takeaway. The fish was very fresh, and skin on, which I as a city dweller wasn't expecting, but did enjoy. I asked for a lightly battered fish, however it came more on the heavy side. The meal was still enjoyable nonetheless.

Nice chips but the fish was a bit of a let down, not fresh and a bit mushy, too much batter, £11.25 for a fish supper was a bit much considering the small size of the portions, young lady was friendly.

Absolutely awesome. Met a lovely fishermen and his wife, who told us his fish were sold here. He was ordering his tea to take away. I ordered mine. Awesome quality. Awesome price awesome taste. Thank you.

Lovely food, I had cod and chips. Only a small portion but it was very generous. I was tempted by the sherry trifle for dessert. It was glorious. Attentive staff and stylish surroundings. People were queuing up about 20 minutes before it opened. Will go again

After hearing good things about Trenchers, we decided to give it a go for our very first time in Whitby. There's ample space for everyone, it's clean and almost slightly fancy! Seeing chefs with white hats at the front cooking your fish and chips is a refreshing change! The service was super friendly and quick, the food came out in a shot and most importantly it was delicious. I forgot to photograph my partners food, he had the whitby scampi and the large cod and chips - he spoke highly of those too.

Take out experience was excellent. Even though it was a bank holiday it was easy to order and collect. 5 🌟

Top rated for a reason - fabulous Fish & Chips with crispy batter and homemade chips. Prices are reasonable and the Kids Menu is very good value for money. Highly recommended.

We tried the restaurant after looking at reviews we'd been served our drinks our waitress was rushing us to order, when we ordered we got told 2 items weren't available so we asked for more time to chose as no alternative was advised, as we tried to pick another meal the middle aged blonde supervisor came over stating they didn't have a licence just for drinks so we needed to order something quick, bag of chips, we stated we only needed few minutes to browse the menu and she got very nasty saying she was going to take our drinks if we didn't put an order in straight away, we again asked for more time as felt very rushed because we wanted large fish but as none available we wanted to try something else. In answer she took our drinks away and ask us to leave as she wasn't prepared to wait for our order and put her licence at risk. We felt very embarrassed, other customers were looking at us as if we'd caused a disruption when we'd not done anything wrong, so we left straight away, we will never return and I've advised others not to visit as terrible service We then went to magpies cafe, excellent service with wonderful fresh huge potions of cod and scampi, we had 3 courses with drinks less than £100 for 2 adults so would advise everyone reading this review to go near the harbour and find maggies

Exceptional meal here lunchtime on Saturday of Easter weekend. The town was heaving as was sunny and we did well to get in just before q formed, but would be worth it if you did have to q. The best fish cakes ive ever had. Rest of family enjoyed their fish and chips too. For how busy it was didnt feel hemmed in at all. Really friendly waitress (sorry didnt catch name). 10/10

Fantastic restaurant, on one of the days we noticed there was a que to get in so we got fish and chips to takeaway, which was delicious, probably the best fish and chips we have ever had. We went back again because we enjoyed the food so much. We had Chowder, which was lovely, and Haddock with chips again. Great service and nice restaurant environment. The fish and chips really were delicious, fresh crispy batter, beautifully flakey fish and the chips were really tasty. Would definitely recommend going here if you are in Whitby.

Used the takeaway NOT the restaurant, so cannot comment on that. Take away was very average. Fish was nice, but cooked with far too much batter, and also overcooked in parts. Handful of poorly cut and cooked chips, all at what was a premium price. Definitely not worth the hype.

The best fish and chips ever! Fresh fish perfectly cooked. Chips are golden. And you must try the butchers gravy.

Gave out menus whilst we queued for a short time. Good choice on menu. Very light battery on fish. Chips were okay.

The fish is alright but the chips aren’t great. They tasted as though they were cooked in old fat - that slightly brownish unpleasant taste you get when a chippy is cutting corners.

Freshest scampi and crumbfried haddock I’ve had in a long long while. The chips were slightly overdone, just the way I like them, I ate more than I should’ve probably. The restaurant is busy, even at lunch time on a week day. Service is warm and attentive.

As always superb fish and chips. My other half had a small skinless haddock while I had regular cod, both had chips and mushy please, and a pot of tea. Oh yes, she had a couple of scoops of ice cream. 😂

I took two old uni friends for a day trip to Whitby, there both goths and one had never been! We went into one restaurant and due to one being glutton intolerant and the other vegetarian the options were non-existent to limited. Not so in Trenchers, they do glutton free fish and chips as well as tartar sauce and theres at least 4 vegetarian options too! It made my friends day as he'd not had fish and chips for a long time!

Chips re-heated, cod had more batter than fish. Service was not professional, very defensive & angry when I mentioned that our meal was very much below average. Constructive criticism should have be taken on board to improve food.

We visited Trenchers on a Sunday lunchtime. We were greeted by a very pleasant and friendly man called Liam ( I think he may be the restaurant manager) The restaurant is large and very nicely decorated. The waitress who served us was chatty and friendly. We both had regular cod and chips with mushy peas. The fish was white and flaky with slightly crispy batter, not at all greasy, neither were the chips. We both agreed that they were the nicest fish and chips we had eaten in a while. Overall Trenchers is a brilliant restaurant with an extensive menu in addition to the usual fish and chips depending on your taste. We will definitely be heading back the next time we are in Whitby.

The fish and chips were really good and I highly recommend getting the haddock! it's just so much softer and really melts in your mouth. the crunchy batter was so good and tartar sauce tasted great and freshly made! Ambience of the restaurant was also really nice and boujee. Overall just a good experience dining here! Definitely worth a visit.

Very disappointing. Cod was lacking and chips tasted like reheated. When this was pointed out to manager she was instantly defensive which was unhelpful as customer. Would have been good for her to take feedback on board.

I absolutely love Trenchers for fish and chips, it has been somewhat of a mother's day family tradition to visit here with my children. The portions are very generous, especially the children's menu which consists of a main, drink and very generous dessert, too. Cod is so fresh and flakey. Staff are so friendly and attentive. Definitely the best fish and chips in Whitby!

First time visiting this restaurant. Lady who took order was good, since then got starter at 10 minutes later, once starter was done, i’ve wait 40 minutes for main course but haven’t heard anything so I ask and they enquire regarding my main course. Main course was oky as average (nothing special as aspected) you can get the same at other places. Don’t get attracted by seeing que at front as I did. 👍🏼

This spot has rave reviews for a reason! The fish and chips were generous portions with a delightfully light batter that wasn’t at all greasy and was tasty all by itself. The chips were cooked perfectly and both they and the fish were clearly made fresh to order. The homemade tartare sauce was clearly just that without any hint of the sugary tartness you usually get from store bought jars. The curry sauce was the best I’ve seen, with a light spiciness to it that was warming without being overpowering. Though I asked for ketchup I didn’t need any and it was almost a distraction from the wonderful other flavours. The scampi is a good starter to share between two with the chilli sauce a nice accompaniment. The service was prompt and attentive with plenty of staff on hand. The toilet facilities were numerous and clean. The decor of the restaurant itself was modern and nicely spaced out. Overall this spot deserves its reputation and is genuinely one of the best fish and chips you’ll find in the UK.

We called in on the off chance as we had noted they served seafood Chowder and were fortunate enough to get a small table for the two of us. The chowder was very good, loaded with fish and seafood. Service was excellent, friendly, helpful and chatty, and we were both glad we took our waitress's advice and had some crusty bread with it, it certainly made a difference. The other food we saw looked very tempting too and we will definitely go here again to try the fish and chips!

Mid week so managed to avoid the usual queues outside. Polished and gleaming interior with good service. Food was nice, but seafood chowder was like a nice vegetable soup, they however brought me a replacement which was full of seafood.

This certainly is one of the best, if not the best, fish and chips in Whitby! Paid £12.95 for small cod and chips. Ok on the pricier side however the batter was absolutely spot on, light and crisp. Not dripping with grease. Chips were excellent. Would have preferred that they throw in mushy peas or bread and butter for the price we paid but overall a very good experience. Service was spot on too, waitress was very attentive.

The fish and chips are the best I've had

An excellent meal with very good service. My wife had fish pie with peas and I had the beef pie with chips and mushy peas (I dislike fish!). The food was well cooked and they were decent portion sizes. Our desserts were apple and blackberry crumble with custard and cheesecake with ice cream, also very pleasant. We would go back again.

We visited Trenchers twice on our stay in Whitby and both times our fish and chips were great and also a mention about the staff who were so polite and happy ☺,didn't try any other fish restaurants in Whitby,but this would take some beating.

Very good chippy with some of the best tasting cod I've had. Mushy peas were well seasoned and the gravy was lovely. £11 for fish and chips may seem steep but its well worth it!

Visited Saturday evening. There was a queue but we was seated within 15 minutes or so. Our server Alex was lovely. Steve had the regular cod and o had the small. We also ordered a portion of mushy peas and a slice of white bread as we saw the neighbouring table with some and it looked sooo good. Was glad we did, it was delicious, so pillowy soft and tasty. The fish was THE best we’ve ever tasted and that says a lot! My small fillet I think was cut from a large piece as the chunks were so big and absolutely gorgeous. I couldn’t finish all mine and Ale. Offered us a takeaway box. At first I declined as I was so full but knew I’d regret leaving it later on and so took the rest along with some mushy peas and the outstanding tartare sauce back to our guest house with us (No 7 East Crescent if you’re looking, you won’t be disappointed). I tried to finish it a couple of hours later but still only managed half of what I’d saved. Excellent value for money. Safe to say you will not be disappointed when you visit. We will definitely return on our next trip 😋

Great food, fab service. Everything lovely and clean. Popped in, in the afternoon to check out the menu as party of 16, were told we didn't need to book. Big mistake! Some of us queued outside in the rain and did get in but sadly some of our party got so wet they gave up and went back to our accommodation. In hindsight I'd say whatever size of party you are, it would be advisable to book as this is a popular place to eat.

Absolutely fantastic restaurant, we were seated right away, very friendly staff and our food was served to us very quickly. We had the halloumi fries with chilli jam and scampi for starters and then cod and chips for mains and wow, incredible. The chips were crispy and the cod just fell apart with a lovely crunchy to the batter. We will definitely be coming here again, this, in my opinion is one of the best chippys in Whitby!

Great venue, still cafe like seating but excellent facilities. Staff in our experience were attentive & friendly. Personal view is that fish & chips always taste better when wrapped in paper.

Fish & chips food good but nothing more or less than you expect

We’ve been to Whitby a few times now but never been to Trenchers. Usually there’s too much of a queue. We’re so glad we settled on it this time. The food was great. We were served by Karen D who was very helpful & friendly. I asked about the size of a small cod & chips which after her recommendation was spot on for me. She even came back to ask me if the size was enough, There were plenty of chips too!! We’ll definitely be returning on our next trip.

On a previous trip to Whitby and in search of great fish and chips I mistakenly believed the hype on TripAdvisor about a famous Whitby chippy and was badly disappointed. While looking around for another fish restaurant we chanced upon Trenchers and I'm so glad we did. Extremely smart interior that promises that class above experience. Lovely friendly and efficient staff, and the food was perfect. The batter on my cod was so light and crisp, a perfect coating for the tasty, flaky fish. Chips were cooked to perfection. This will be our go-to place for future visits to Whitby.

I would like to congratulate Trenchers on providing the most fantastic service. On a cold night in whitby searching for somewhere to eat I stumbled into this restaurant. Immediately I was greeted by smiling staff who showed us to a table without fuss. Our waitress was friendly and very professional. Her warm humour and speed of order is to be revered. The menu was easy to navigate through and also provided great variety. The restaurant itself was extremely well set out and the whole place was bustling and it felt a great place to be. Lots of families and others made the atmosphere even more enjoyable. The food was served without haste and was delicious. Starter, main course and pudding were superb without being at all pretentious. The trifle reminded me of Christmas at grandparents. All I can say is I hope this business thrives and provides that same service for many years. Thank you to all the staff and I'll definitely be back.

One of the best gluten free fish and chips I have ever had! Would honestly recommend if you are in the area - the staff were super friendly at recommendations and the service was quick but never felt rushed!

Always go to this take away chippy had a visit on Wednesday not a problem food bang on. Visited Friday totally different we waited 25 mins for 2 x fish and chips and scampi and chips 2 sausage and a fish cake when the order arrived I asked can I not have a bag as I had a little dog with me . The answer no we not got any. OK so after checking the order I found no fish cake when asking the tall young lad where it was he said obviously we must of forgotten to do it . When the fryer asked what's up I told him he said I was never asked to do one . On checking the pad he had written down the fish cake but never told the fryer. So a argument started the young lad then used we are busy can't you see attitude so another 10 mins just to get him to reverse the payment back onto my bank card as I'm not waiting another 15mins for the fish cake. Ps it wasn't that busy 7pm at night. Maybe have a word with the lad about his attitude as plenty of other chippy in whitby.

I give this place 5 stars. The staff are wonderful they can't do enough for you. The food is gorgeous highly recommend.

Wonderful place to eat. Although we didn't have any puddings they looked fresh and a good size. Be sure to ask for vegetarian chips if you don't want to eat the ones made with beef fat.

Two portions of cod and chips and a small pot of curry sauce came to 23.00. Quite reasonable. The portion of fish was huge. I'm a big man, and could barely finish it. Fish was fresh and flaky you could tell it hasn't been frozen. Golden chips served piping hot. Certainly some of the best fish and chips ove had in a while.

Wow oh wow, what gorgeous food. The chowder was so full of flavour. Two starters are enough as a meal if you fancy. The staff very attentive, toilets immaculate, great options for gluten free/coeliac (hubby made up being able to get gluten-free fish and chips) 👍 Highly recommend
