Trenchers in Scarborough

We loved this restaurant, we wanted a fairly quick meal as we were going to an event. There was a queue outside, but this dissipated within minutes. The staff were attentive and pleasant. My wife required a gluten free meal, she was not disappointed, most restaurants and takeaways of this nature rarely cater for coeliac people, but this one did. The food was delicious, my wife had battered prawns in a GF batter which she said for excellent. They even brought her GF non brewed condiment.

Takeaway from Trenchers on our recent trip to Whitby. Using the takeaway window, we waited some time for our food as it was very busy but I was thankful for the freshly made fish. Good quality, chips could have been fresher but for a coastal fish and chip restaurant - we were a fan!

Been here many time's and never had a complaint , Staff are great and all the meal's are good from starters to desert , i have tried most thing's here but tend to go for the Fish N Chips , My brother and sister in law live in Australia but have booked for May for his wedding anniversary meal when he visits , We usually find Anne or Christine to look after us , they have been there yrs and alway's make time for a chat { not too long as they are alway's busy } Well worth a try if not been before ,

We had a family meal there. The food was lovely. Fish and batter was light, tasty and not greasy at all. Service was quick and staff were efficient and helpful. The only downside is we witnessed the staff getting what appeared to be told off infront of customers. The staff didn’t appear to be talking to each other and seemed to be on edge.

Little bit more expensive, but oh so worth it! So much choice, couldn’t make up my mind. So many things on the menu, but if you want a treat stick with the classics - scampi, chips, mushy peas and bread and butter. Kids were loving it here.

The best fish and chips I have had for years. Beautiful cod fried to perfection, and excellent chips. My wife is Coeliac, and she said that the batter was the best gluten free batter she has ever had. Excellent service, and the cups of tea were good, too. Highly recommended, we will be back very soon.

When in Whitby you have to have Fish & Chips seemed to be the instructions from everyone I spoke to prior to my trip to the town, so a visit to one of the fish & chippies was a must. With so many to choose from, I relied on the feedback book at the cottage we were staying at and which was full of praise for Trenchers. One wet day (we had plenty to choose from), we rang to check if we needed booking. No problems, walk ins were ok but we may have to wait outside under the awning for a few minutes till a suitable table came free. Turning up, sure enough, we were shown where to stand and it was less than 5 minutes when we were being escorted to a table set for 6 plus a kiddy high chair for our 18 month old. Nice modern restaurant with open kitchen and decorated to a very high standard. Toilets, often the real measure of a place, were immaculate and spacious and unlike most places, the gents was fully equipped with baby changing facilities. Drinks and a wide ranging variety of a food order taken (including me requesting haddock that was without skin when the menu option stated 'skin on'). Drinks served very quickly with food following not long after and a spare plate to enable us to give our youngest, food from our plates. Chatty friendly waitress who was happy to pander to all our needs in order to ensure we were being looked after - excellent service. As for the food? Everyone was delighted with their choice especially myself who felt I had been transported to fish heaven. Beautiful piece of skin off Haddock with a Batter to die for. Crispy without being in the slightest greasy - presumably thanks to the beef dripping used. Chips were of an equal standard - well cooked, soft and a delicious all round meal, with a truly excellent Tartare sauce. If ever back in Whitby, I know where I'll be going.

Sadly the queue to eat in was long so we had scampi & chips to eat on a bench in the sunshine. Scampi was OK, but chips a bit stodgy.

We always visit trenchers when in whitby, always happy with the service here they are so friendly and accommodating unfortunately the last couple of visits I am sorry to say the fish seemed to be tasteless. Desserts are amazing.

Absolutely awesome. Met a lovely fishermen and his wife, who told us his fish were sold here. He was ordering his tea to take away. I ordered mine. Awesome quality. Awesome price awesome taste. Thank you.

From entering the restaurant to leaving we were treat amazingly by lovely staff.The food was delicious and fish was so lovely.My husband had the regular cod and couldn’t finish his meal the portion was so big!I was in a wheel chair and the table we were allocated with was perfect.The staff came over and asked if everything was ok.Lovely staff a credit to Trenchers.We have tried quite a lot of top Fish restaurants in Whitby and Trenchers is first class.Thank you for a great meal!!

Classic seaside Chippy vibe. Restaurant couldn't accommodate my friends and I as it was busy so we did takeaway. The fish was very fresh, and skin on, which I as a city dweller wasn't expecting, but did enjoy. I asked for a lightly battered fish, however it came more on the heavy side. The meal was still enjoyable nonetheless.

Nice chips but the fish was a bit of a let down, not fresh and a bit mushy, too much batter, £11.25 for a fish supper was a bit much considering the small size of the portions, young lady was friendly.

Trenches has really gone downhill, it seems the chain that owns it has done a huge dis-service to the original owners and reputation of Trenchers on three fronts on our recent visit: 1) Service - The time-served waitress took our order and never returned to ask how our food was, whether we needed anything, we had to ask a different waitress to ask for the bill. In a half empty restaurant, this is inexcusable 2) Fish - the Cod had a bone present, attention to detail missing on this occasion 3) Lastly and the biggest gripe off all, it truly is a disgrace and utter embarrassment that trenchers serve up such disgusting, lifeless chips, more chips were left on the plate because they have horrible dark bits in them than were edible. If you going to serve sub-par chips and use different suppliers, then I expect the cost of my order to be reduced in line with the poor quality chips. Overall, a disappointing visit, this is not the first time Trenchers continue to use second-rate potato suppliers and still expect customers to pay the same price. If I go to the Magpie, the chips are consistent. Trenchers have gone downhill and the failure to resolve the potato source issue has gone on for some time over a couple of visits and I can therefore assume that Trenchers simply do not note any concerns and fix them. Get your act together Trenchers, if people are coming to your place as a treat, don't serve up sub-par chips.

We had a take out from Trenchers, it was top food, great portions. I had the king prawns and chips and this was lovely. Husband had fish & Chips which was equally as good.

I don’t normally do F&C shop reviews due to the fact that in any givern day one can be better than another and also (Let’s face it) we all have our own preference of how we like our fish and chips. However it was pretty good, that’s all I can say, paid 11.95 for fish and chips to take out and it was ok no real problems.

After a beautiful day in Whitby we decided to call in here for some fish and chips, we had already checked if they did gluten free (2 of us are in the family)! I have to say it was absolutely beautiful. The portion sizers were huge! The service was lovely too! Thank you so much, we will back 😄😄

Lovely food, I had cod and chips. Only a small portion but it was very generous. I was tempted by the sherry trifle for dessert. It was glorious. Attentive staff and stylish surroundings. People were queuing up about 20 minutes before it opened. Will go again

After hearing good things about Trenchers, we decided to give it a go for our very first time in Whitby. There's ample space for everyone, it's clean and almost slightly fancy! Seeing chefs with white hats at the front cooking your fish and chips is a refreshing change! The service was super friendly and quick, the food came out in a shot and most importantly it was delicious. I forgot to photograph my partners food, he had the whitby scampi and the large cod and chips - he spoke highly of those too.

We tried the restaurant after looking at reviews we'd been served our drinks our waitress was rushing us to order, when we ordered we got told 2 items weren't available so we asked for more time to chose as no alternative was advised, as we tried to pick another meal the middle aged blonde supervisor came over stating they didn't have a licence just for drinks so we needed to order something quick, bag of chips, we stated we only needed few minutes to browse the menu and she got very nasty saying she was going to take our drinks if we didn't put an order in straight away, we again asked for more time as felt very rushed because we wanted large fish but as none available we wanted to try something else. In answer she took our drinks away and ask us to leave as she wasn't prepared to wait for our order and put her licence at risk. We felt very embarrassed, other customers were looking at us as if we'd caused a disruption when we'd not done anything wrong, so we left straight away, we will never return and I've advised others not to visit as terrible service We then went to magpies cafe, excellent service with wonderful fresh huge potions of cod and scampi, we had 3 courses with drinks less than £100 for 2 adults so would advise everyone reading this review to go near the harbour and find maggies

Exceptional meal here lunchtime on Saturday of Easter weekend. The town was heaving as was sunny and we did well to get in just before q formed, but would be worth it if you did have to q. The best fish cakes ive ever had. Rest of family enjoyed their fish and chips too. For how busy it was didnt feel hemmed in at all. Really friendly waitress (sorry didnt catch name). 10/10

Fantastic restaurant, on one of the days we noticed there was a que to get in so we got fish and chips to takeaway, which was delicious, probably the best fish and chips we have ever had. We went back again because we enjoyed the food so much. We had Chowder, which was lovely, and Haddock with chips again. Great service and nice restaurant environment. The fish and chips really were delicious, fresh crispy batter, beautifully flakey fish and the chips were really tasty. Would definitely recommend going here if you are in Whitby.

Used the takeaway NOT the restaurant, so cannot comment on that. Take away was very average. Fish was nice, but cooked with far too much batter, and also overcooked in parts. Handful of poorly cut and cooked chips, all at what was a premium price. Definitely not worth the hype.

Gave out menus whilst we queued for a short time. Good choice on menu. Very light battery on fish. Chips were okay.

The fish is alright but the chips aren’t great. They tasted as though they were cooked in old fat - that slightly brownish unpleasant taste you get when a chippy is cutting corners.

Freshest scampi and crumbfried haddock I’ve had in a long long while. The chips were slightly overdone, just the way I like them, I ate more than I should’ve probably. The restaurant is busy, even at lunch time on a week day. Service is warm and attentive.

As always superb fish and chips. My other half had a small skinless haddock while I had regular cod, both had chips and mushy please, and a pot of tea. Oh yes, she had a couple of scoops of ice cream. 😂

I took two old uni friends for a day trip to Whitby, there both goths and one had never been! We went into one restaurant and due to one being glutton intolerant and the other vegetarian the options were non-existent to limited. Not so in Trenchers, they do glutton free fish and chips as well as tartar sauce and theres at least 4 vegetarian options too! It made my friends day as he'd not had fish and chips for a long time!

We visited Trenchers on a Sunday lunchtime. We were greeted by a very pleasant and friendly man called Liam ( I think he may be the restaurant manager) The restaurant is large and very nicely decorated. The waitress who served us was chatty and friendly. We both had regular cod and chips with mushy peas. The fish was white and flaky with slightly crispy batter, not at all greasy, neither were the chips. We both agreed that they were the nicest fish and chips we had eaten in a while. Overall Trenchers is a brilliant restaurant with an extensive menu in addition to the usual fish and chips depending on your taste. We will definitely be heading back the next time we are in Whitby.

The fish and chips were really good and I highly recommend getting the haddock! it's just so much softer and really melts in your mouth. the crunchy batter was so good and tartar sauce tasted great and freshly made! Ambience of the restaurant was also really nice and boujee. Overall just a good experience dining here! Definitely worth a visit.

Chips re-heated, cod had more batter than fish. Service was not professional, very defensive & angry when I mentioned that our meal was very much below average. Constructive criticism should have be taken on board to improve food.

Very disappointing. Cod was lacking and chips tasted like reheated. When this was pointed out to manager she was instantly defensive which was unhelpful as customer. Would have been good for her to take feedback on board.

I absolutely love Trenchers for fish and chips, it has been somewhat of a mother's day family tradition to visit here with my children. The portions are very generous, especially the children's menu which consists of a main, drink and very generous dessert, too. Cod is so fresh and flakey. Staff are so friendly and attentive. Definitely the best fish and chips in Whitby!

This spot has rave reviews for a reason! The fish and chips were generous portions with a delightfully light batter that wasn’t at all greasy and was tasty all by itself. The chips were cooked perfectly and both they and the fish were clearly made fresh to order. The homemade tartare sauce was clearly just that without any hint of the sugary tartness you usually get from store bought jars. The curry sauce was the best I’ve seen, with a light spiciness to it that was warming without being overpowering. Though I asked for ketchup I didn’t need any and it was almost a distraction from the wonderful other flavours. The scampi is a good starter to share between two with the chilli sauce a nice accompaniment. The service was prompt and attentive with plenty of staff on hand. The toilet facilities were numerous and clean. The decor of the restaurant itself was modern and nicely spaced out. Overall this spot deserves its reputation and is genuinely one of the best fish and chips you’ll find in the UK.

First time visiting this restaurant. Lady who took order was good, since then got starter at 10 minutes later, once starter was done, i’ve wait 40 minutes for main course but haven’t heard anything so I ask and they enquire regarding my main course. Main course was oky as average (nothing special as aspected) you can get the same at other places. Don’t get attracted by seeing que at front as I did. 👍🏼

We called in on the off chance as we had noted they served seafood Chowder and were fortunate enough to get a small table for the two of us. The chowder was very good, loaded with fish and seafood. Service was excellent, friendly, helpful and chatty, and we were both glad we took our waitress's advice and had some crusty bread with it, it certainly made a difference. The other food we saw looked very tempting too and we will definitely go here again to try the fish and chips!

Mid week so managed to avoid the usual queues outside. Polished and gleaming interior with good service. Food was nice, but seafood chowder was like a nice vegetable soup, they however brought me a replacement which was full of seafood.

Much better than The Magpie. Bit of a wait outside but was worth it. Really enjoyed the food

This certainly is one of the best, if not the best, fish and chips in Whitby! Paid £12.95 for small cod and chips. Ok on the pricier side however the batter was absolutely spot on, light and crisp. Not dripping with grease. Chips were excellent. Would have preferred that they throw in mushy peas or bread and butter for the price we paid but overall a very good experience. Service was spot on too, waitress was very attentive.

The fish and chips are the best I've had

An excellent meal with very good service. My wife had fish pie with peas and I had the beef pie with chips and mushy peas (I dislike fish!). The food was well cooked and they were decent portion sizes. Our desserts were apple and blackberry crumble with custard and cheesecake with ice cream, also very pleasant. We would go back again.

We visited Trenchers twice on our stay in Whitby and both times our fish and chips were great and also a mention about the staff who were so polite and happy ☺,didn't try any other fish restaurants in Whitby,but this would take some beating.

Very good chippy with some of the best tasting cod I've had. Mushy peas were well seasoned and the gravy was lovely. £11 for fish and chips may seem steep but its well worth it!

Great food, fab service. Everything lovely and clean. Popped in, in the afternoon to check out the menu as party of 16, were told we didn't need to book. Big mistake! Some of us queued outside in the rain and did get in but sadly some of our party got so wet they gave up and went back to our accommodation. In hindsight I'd say whatever size of party you are, it would be advisable to book as this is a popular place to eat.

Visited Saturday evening. There was a queue but we was seated within 15 minutes or so. Our server Alex was lovely. Steve had the regular cod and o had the small. We also ordered a portion of mushy peas and a slice of white bread as we saw the neighbouring table with some and it looked sooo good. Was glad we did, it was delicious, so pillowy soft and tasty. The fish was THE best we’ve ever tasted and that says a lot! My small fillet I think was cut from a large piece as the chunks were so big and absolutely gorgeous. I couldn’t finish all mine and Ale. Offered us a takeaway box. At first I declined as I was so full but knew I’d regret leaving it later on and so took the rest along with some mushy peas and the outstanding tartare sauce back to our guest house with us (No 7 East Crescent if you’re looking, you won’t be disappointed). I tried to finish it a couple of hours later but still only managed half of what I’d saved. Excellent value for money. Safe to say you will not be disappointed when you visit. We will definitely return on our next trip 😋
