On Saturday night we waited ages for a table as was busy. The waitress was very helpful but the haddock we received was very poor quality. It seemed it was full of water and tasteless I e mailed trenchers but still awaiting a reply. It seemed the haddock was frozen at sea and not fresh as promised by the waitress. Frozen at sea fish is used often used.

Visited Whitby before, can not go without having Fish & Chips and decided to dine-in based on reviews as would normally opt for The Magpie. OK, so it’s not the real seaside experience eating in a restaurant, missing out on the sea air, dodging the gulls and protecting your dinner from the scavengers on the sea front, however Trenchers was a great experience. The service was excellent, loads of immaculately presented staff, seated immediately in a clean and comfy area, drinks arrived in a flash and food order taken promptly. Travelling as a couple I had Regular Haddock and my Partner had Small Cod. Mains arrived after a short wait, on the face of it, the Cod looked very small in comparison to the Haddock, but don’t be deceived, it was more than sufficient and my partner struggled to finish as the chips were plentiful. The batter on the fish was exceptional, aerated and crunchy with shards of delicious flavour crumbling off. Both fish were chunky, flaky and beautiful cooked, tender whist retaining its bite. I think the Haddock had a stronger flavour owing to the skin being left on. Chips were well cut and cooked to perfection, light golden colour with a crisp edge, fluffy on the inside. At no point during the meal did either the fish of chips go soggy, despite freshly squeezed lemon and copious amounts of vinegar, clearly the temperature of the oil has something to do with that, like I say, perfection. We were provided with homemade tartar sauce, which was a great addition, I ordered mushy peas, unfortunately I felt they were a little on the bland side, nothing a bit of vinegar and a spoon of tartar sauce couldn’t fix, however a little on the expensive side too. To be honest, the whole restaurant is on the expensive side compared to the nearby competition. It is certainly the most expensive we saw personally, not saying it is the most expensive as we didn’t look everywhere. However, as with most things in life you generally get what you pay for and Trenchers was definitely worth paying that bit extra for. Excellent service, top quality fresh fish caught daily and locally farmed potatoes cooked to perfection. Highly recommended, a must visit if in the area.

Upon arriving there was no queue so we were seated quickly. Upon sitting down we were asked to order without having had a chance to see the menu. We asked for longer to see what we wanted to eat, which was ok and not a problem. Less than 3 minutes later they were back to take the order, we did not have time to peruse there extensive food menu let alone the the drinks menu. We hastily ordered our food, which arrived very quickly. It was hot and tasty, we can't fault the quality of the food, though it did not meet expectations. Another very well known establishment in the area we visited whist on our trip was far superior in our opinion. Upon finishing our food the plates were cleared and the bill arrived immediately, we hadn't managed to get half way through our drinks before being asked to pay. I felt I needed to ask if we could stay long enough to finish our drinks, again this was ok however we felt very rushed. Myself personally felt very rushed, not appreciated as a customer and the food did not live upto the hype. Unfortunately I cannot recommend and doubt very much is will be returning when there are superior restaurants in the area.

Our first trip to Trenchers and it did not disappoint! We went with our two young children, had to queue for around 5 minutes which wasn't an issue as weather was nice. Great choice of food and drinks. We had squid and prawn cocktail to start, the nicest prawn cocktail I've ever had. Our boys had chicken nuggets and macaroni cheese (tried to persuade them to have the famous fish and chips). We had scampi and chips and a small haddock and chips. They were all cooked really well and such generous portions. Not cheap but if you are away and want a nice treat meal, then would really recommend. We were tempted to go for a second night!

A great restaurant. Portion sizes were very good. We had a party of 18 down for the weekend, to celebrate a 60th birthday. Michelle was a credit to the restaurant, serving all of us in good time and with a smile. In my opinion, the best fish and chips in Whitby, by a mile. I would recommend to everyone.

5 Stars – Best Fish and Chips I’ve Had in a Long Time! Ate in at Trenchers Whitby and had a regular fish and chips, plus a small fish and chips, on the side was two slices of buttered bread, homemade tartar sauce, curry sauce, mayo, and ketchup. Honestly, everything was spot on. The chips were beautifully cooked in beef dripping—crisp on the outside, fluffy inside, and not the slightest bit greasy. Same goes for the fish: perfectly fried with a golden, light batter that didn’t leave any oil behind on the plate. Fresh, flaky, and full of flavour. The standout for me though was the homemade tartar sauce—hands down the best I’ve ever tasted. Creamy, tangy, and packed with flavour. I’d go back just for that alone. If you're in Whitby and craving proper fish and chips done right, Trenchers is the place. Highly recommended!

I give it a 4 out of 5 it's definitely better than your average chippy however the large definitely isn't large just long and thin cod and haddock not thick meaty chunks. Buy the staff are nice and the batter crispy. Just let down by the portion size/value. The calamari was good too.

Mediocre at best, chips were dry as if they had been standing for a while, fish portion felt small even though I got the large. Gravy probably star of the show. Coming from a small fishing village I think this restaurant would struggle to compete with our two local chip shops. Foreign students I talked to were also disappointed and I defended the dish saying this was not a great example. Would not return.

Excellent place to sit down and eat fish and chips. Haddock and cod pieces (large is very large), chips and mushy peas all excellent. Own tartar source was liked by all at our table. Mushy peas served in separate dish (and fee), we could have ordered 2 or 3 between us rather than four. Other than that excellent. And, very clean restrooms. Popular at lunchtime so be prepared to wait; or go early like we did.

Trenchers near the station was our choice for fish and chips one night in Whitby, it was a good choice. Clear queuing system in place, no queue on a wet quiet winter Monday and we were warmly welcomed and shown to our table. Order was taken promptly and our enquiry about fish portion size choice was responded to well. The food arrived without delay piping hot and tasty and I can recommend it. Personal preference says I prefer oil for cooking rather than beef dripping but that's a personal opinion. The staff remained attentive throughout and there was a lively but pleasant atmosphere. My only question mark would be the quality of the beer, which not being the main reason for our visit, I chose to just accept. However when compared to the same, sampled in the brewery up the road a few hours earlier, it left a lot to be desired. Apart from that everything was great and we will return when next in Whitby.

Have been here a couple of times before and loved it so decided to introduce it to my mam who had never been (she's loves Fisherman's Wife). And it didn't disappoint. My mam and I had a small cod and chips, which wasn't small at all! More like a regular. The cod tasted fresh and the chips were delicious. My partner had the battered prawns and fish bites; he said the prawns were okay but the fish was delicious and when we go again, he'd just get the fish. Service was really good. Sadly this one star comes not from the fish and chips but the bull dust that was told to us to explain my warm pint of IPA beer was in fact correct. Ie a pale ale apparently is chilled at a warmer temperature than a dark ale. I beg to differ, and so does Google. When the bill was bought to us, and we sat our credit card next to the warm untouched beer which we had previously questioned, no acknowledgment was made at all even though they knew we were not happy.
