Trenchers in Scarborough

This is one of the many fish & chips in Whitby, but definitely consider this one for taking out or eating in. I ordered take away and the staff were friendly, and the food came fast. Very generous portions for the price - I consider £11 for what I got a bargain! The menu has a wide range of options, so definitely not limited to just fish and chips !

Ordered medium cod and chips. The cod was "tail end" and left grease on the plate. We were given our bill whether we wanted it or not and whilst we still had drinks on the table. Loads if staff stood about talking loudly. Expensive and when we left no acknowledgement of our attendance. Overall very disappointing.

The best fish and chips I’ve ever had. I opted for a small and the portion was more than substantial! Staff were lovely as well.

We called in for lunch while in whitby. Arrived at 11.30 am the opening time and went straight in . We were greeted and shown to our table by our lovely waitress. She immediately took our drinks order, which arrived super fast. We ordered our food, and that came about 10 minutes later. That was fish and chips and a seafood salad. Both were scrumptious . By this time, the restaurant was full, and there was a queue outside. There was a good atmosphere and all the staff were brilliant. It is a little expensive to eat in trenchers, but it is well worth it . This was a little treat for my wife and I. Would I come here again???. Yes please.

One of my favourite fish restaurants. The Food is excellent with the service even better attentive and proffional. We have been several times when we are in the area and will definitely be back

We have been here so many times. We drive over from York just to have our favourite fish and chips!

A fabulous place. You might wonder why there is always a queue outside, but once inside you realise why. In fact, it never takes too long to gain entry. You can sit in American style booths with a friend and have a lovely meal together. Super friendly and helpful service but a busy bevy of fun people. Fun was delicious and despite it being so very busy we weren't hurried out of the door after we finished.

Visited today while in Whitby for a day out. The haddock was by far the best piece of fish I've had in a long time. The service was extremely friendly and efficient. Will definitely visit again when in the area. Highly recommended.

Sunday Lunch with friends here was brilliant. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their lunch which of course the Fish & chips featured strongly and was as good as any of the other Whitby Fish restaurants. One of our party had the Seafood platter and would recommend this for a change.

Took a fish butty home and the bread was quite low quality and semi firm The fish, battered pretty well but was quite mushy. Seemed like it was either previously frozen or laid in water for too long and was quite a mushy texture rather than flakey and fish like

What a lovely meal we all had tonight, as always the staff were so friendly as well, my mum got a seafood platter starter, I've never seen the likes of it, for a starter it was huge, my dad ordered haddock which he said was 10/10, i had halibut, again it was delish, thanks to everyone in Trenchers tonight, it really was a nice night out, you made us feel so welcome.

Taste was good, size of fish (cod) was disappointing in comparison to our local fish chips which is also fresh fish for alot cheaper. But otherwise was worth the visit.

Best fish and chips I've ever had!!

I have always wanted to try Trenchers fish & chips, but unfortunately I’m not a local. So after a seventy mile trip and a short wait in a queue I was shown to my table. I have to say that my first impression was very favourable, beautiful décor and very very clean. The Staff were extremely efficient, friendly and helpful. My server was KAREN D and I have to say that she made my visit so much the better. She was extremely helpful and made sure my order was exactly as I wanted it and was very helpful friendly and cheerful, I don’t think that I could have asked or received any better service (Thank You KAREN D). The food was perfect (fish, chips and mushy peas, followed by apple crumble and custard). The experience was wonderful and I can’t wait until I can manage another trip to Whitby. Many thanks to all at Trenchers, and I for one highly recommend a visit.

Outstanding service. Sat near the front and watched the attentiveness of the waiting staff - clearly they love working here and they love people- great to watch through consistently warm welcome. The food excelled. If only appetite could match the large portions. Crab sandwich was fresh, delicious and generous portions. Chips were exactly to my taste - crispy on the outside, soft inside, not greasy and again generous. Apple crumble was just like homemade- real slices of apple - more generous than could eat. Definitely want to return as only regret was not sharing the experience.

Extremely poor service, had to wait over 45 minutes and the restaurant was not busy, fish very greasy, and for the money very overpriced

Nice clean tidy restaurant..service was good..decor done nice..over 2 floors..toilets upstairs but there's a lift if your disabled or have walking issues or not good with stairs..have lots of choice on the menu..do dessert, tea,coffee and soft drinks..had fish and chips do different sizes so if your a small eater you be OK.. flat walking area so prams,wheelchair, walking aides are good and can manage..

The best fish and chips @ Whitby! I totally recommend the apple pie with ice cream and custard as a dessert 🍨 🥧 .

I always thoroughly enjoy eating here with my family when we go to the coast, the service is excellent, the atmosphere is always bustling but the seating makes your dining experience feel private, the menu has a good selection of choices to suit your appetite. On visits between me and my family we've had the classic fish and chips, but also can recommend the prawn salad and poached salmon with new potatoes and hollandaise sauce. There is sometimes a small wait outside the restaurant but it always goes down quite quickly and is worth it!

Beautifully laid out and decor of excellent quality, very impressed with the cleanliness, brightness and layout. The toilets alone would put many a hotel to shame, accessible via a lift from the main restaurant. The fish was fantastic, thin and crispy with the most fantastic tasting haddock, 10/10, the accompanying tartare sauce was lovely. However, sorry to say the chips were not that good. Seemed undercooked, pale and quite hard, and the garden peas were watery and tasteless. The only reason l gave 4 Stars. Staff were friendly and efficient, it was very busy but they did a great job. I would certainly go again but probably have large fish with bread & butter. My friend had a different meal and thoroughly enjoyed it

Absolutely spot on! Staff we excellent, the decor and seating were very impressive also. We had Haddock and chips, very lightly battered, not greasy at all, and the meat was flaky and very well cooked. 2 battered sausages, again lightly battered and very tasty. King prawn & sea bass curry, again very well cooked, delicious, even the pot of mushy peas and tartar sauce were very nice indeed. We would thoroughly recommend anyone to eat here.

We asked to swop garden peas for mushy with the steak pie ! No problem until we left and checked the Bill ? £1.95 for the privilege, sorry but it just made the dining experience a little lacking x

Perfect as ever. Perfect service, the staff here are fabulous and so is the food. Always consistent and reliable. We visit often and love the varied menu and the decor. There are choices if you don't want a fish dish too!

We had a large family get together to celebrate 2 big birthdays and the staff couldn't have been more welcoming. Everyone was happy with their meals. There was a good range of choice for a fish and chip restaurant, the food came quickly and the desserts were good too. The staff were lovely and made an effort to make our visit enjoyable.

Having been recommended to go to Trenchers, we were certainly not disappointed. The fish was the best we've had in a long while and as for the dripping cooked chips, well! Will be living of the memory for a long, long time to come. The service was great too. Would certainly recommend a visit. We will be back.

Can't really comment on the dine in restaurant but the take away fish and chips are superb. You couldn't get fresher fish if you tried! The fish was cooked to perfection and the chips are bang on. Keep up the good work Trenchers!

Vegan options- they will fry the chips in oil instead of beef dripping, and there’s curry, mushy peas, curry sauce, etc

The food was excellent and lovely surroundings. Our waitress was called Christine and she was amazing. Very knowledgeable about everything on the menu. I asked that the Manager be told how lovely she was. Hope it was passed on. It was our 2nd visit in 3 days. We will definitely be returning to try other things on the menu. Thank you.

Do go and eat here if visiting Whitby. Meals are amazing. I had seafood chowder one night and fish bites with sweet chilli jam another night. Both tasted amazing. Service was excellent as well. Big thanks to all staff

Lovely warm greeting when we entered the restaurant, our main waitress was absolutely lovely- I say main as three waitresses served us during our meal, and all were warm and friendly. We asked for 2 teas and was asked if we would like sugar or sweetners- which we thought was lovely and also very unusual. We were expecting two cups of tea so was surprised again when two cups, a teapot, a pot of hot water and the requested sweetners all arrived- possibly the difference between north and south restaurants? The fish and chips- one haddock and one plaice arrived arrived after a few minutes wait and we have to say it was the best fish we had had in a long time- the batter was crunchy without being hard and over cooked and the chips were lovely and fresh. The only downside with the meal was that we didn't have enough space for the ginger and lemon Cheesecake that looked and sounded amazing. The restaurant including the toilets and upstairs area is beautifully decorated in art eco designs. We had read previous reviews of Trenchers and were delighted to find they were spot on; we will be back next time we are in Whitby., just wish we could give it more stars.

Hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had in my life. I was very skeptical going in thinking it would be another overhyped place. But they did not disappoint and showed me what fish and chips is really about. Highly recommend if you are in Whitby!

I read on reddit that this place spoils fish and chips for you! It is true! THIS IS THE BEST FISH AND CHIPS I have ever had. Now, this definitely spoils any other fish and chips I have had, and I have the same feeling about any other that I'm going to have in the future! We had the haddock and the cod. The batter was crispy. The fish was fresh, flaky and flavourful. Chips cooked to perfection. The curry sauce and tartare sauce were amazing. A perfect lunch!

We enjoyed our food at Trenchers, but we thought that because we had our walking gear on we should be seated within the noisy children's area. It wasn't too bad, but we don't have kids and we don't enjoy the racket of other people's children. I can't fault the food or the service. Would highly recommend and we'll definitely be back.

A great fish and chips establishment. Great to see the boat name for catches and the grower and potato variety being used. Other food is available. We visited twice during our stay. Sweets are yummy too I expect we may visit here again.

This is the 2nd time I have had chips from there this year while on holiday and they were awful. Don't know if they have changed their cooking oil/Dripping? Also weren't fresh. Ended up throwing them away. Very disappointed as I have always gone there.🥺

Trenchers in Whitby is a true gem for fish and chips lovers! I went for the classic fish and chips with curry sauce (I’m Northern) and mushy peas, and it was nothing short of perfection. It’s no wonder they’re known for some of the best fish and chips in Whitby. I’ll definitely be back for more! Five stars all the way!

Call me a traditionalist, but, for me, fish & chips is the great British fast food, and this was anything but fast, although the food was spectacularly good. Recommended to us by family (locals) as the best chippy in Whitby, they were certainly the best that we've had in Whitby that I can remember. The only draw back was the time it took - making your order inside before waiting outside, by the serving hatch. Luckily for us, it was a mild November evening. Overall, though, the food was well worth the wait and I would definitely recommend.

This is by far the best fish and chips in Whitby. Don't listen to anything else. We always visited the one named after the black and white bird. It's been poor the last three visits. We were recommended Trenchers....wow, omg. Our new first call every time.

Really long queue for the restaurant so we used the serving hatch to the side. Service was really quick and we were able to enjoy our food on the benches by the beautiful harbour. Food was better than your average fish and chipy, not greasy, light, crispy. Price was reasonable.

Visited a week ago for dinner with family around 8pm. Staff very attentive, polite and friendly. Lots of options on menu including gluten free. I had a small gluten free cod and chips. Best fish I’ve had in ages. Family had sticky toffee pudding, trifle and ice cream all looked delicious.

Had a take away, you order inside but was nothing outside telling you to order inside. So I waited 10 mins outside to bd told to come in and order. Then, we waited another 23 mins for a large fish and chips and a child's fish and chips. The large fish was not exactly large. A quarter of it was just batter.

With stiff competition in town for Fish & Chips, Trenchers certainly did not disappoint. Fish was fresh and chips tasted delicious, pot of curry sauce was nice and spicy. Would highly recommend it.

On 31st October 2024, I visited Trenchers and ordered the following: 1. Homemade Fishcakes (£14.95) — two homemade cod and haddock fishcakes, breaded and served with chipped potatoes and a salad garnish. 2. Steak Pie (£17.95) — tender, 100% prime beef seasoned with herbs, served with creamed or chipped potatoes and garden peas. 3. We also had a pot of traditional Yorkshire Tea (£5.10) . The tea service was charming, with two teapots: one for the strong brew and another for hot water to dilute it, as well as milk on the side. The portions were very generous, and between the two of us, it was more than enough. Everything tasted wonderful. The fishcakes had a lovely crispy coating with a tender filling, and the beef in the Steak Pie was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The staff were courteous and attentive, which made our experience all the more enjoyable. I’d highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for delicious food in a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. The only drawback was the lack of Wi-Fi access for guests. While there is a staff-only Wi-Fi network, visitors aren’t given access, and mobile 4G signal inside is almost non-existent. This could be inconvenient for those needing connectivity.

The food was delicious and they have the nicest staff, who were wonderful with our two-year old. They could not do enough for us, even though they were really busy. It's the best fish and chips we have had in ages.

Like other reviews on here, was a little underwhelmed. The fish and batter were good but the chips were average in quality and quantity in my opinion. Expected better for the price we paid, which is a shame really.

What a great place this is and well deserving of it’s reputation. From walking in to walking out it was a pleasure. Meet & greet was prompt and friendly, Michelle our waitress was lovely, food was amazing and great choice for various needs. Toilets were modern and spotless. We wandered down about 4.30 and got a seat straight away by the time we left there was a queue of about 15 people. I don’t do queues but Trenchers I think I’d make an exception.

Arrived in Whitby, and felt the need for fish and chips. This place was recommended. We had a short wait to be seated, but we’ll worth it. There’s plenty of choice, and just the right size portion. Service was friendly and polite, and speedy.

We had two adult meals consisting of Scampi & Chips, Cod & Chips and Kids Cod Bites & Chips & Kids Jumbo Battered Sausage & Chips. We all enjoyed our meals. It came to £34 roughly, to Takeaway. The lad serving was helpful and friendly, putting the boxes in a bag and providing plenty of salt & vinegar. He just forgot napkins, but so did we! We were lucky to visit when it was quiet and were the only ones in there; it was all freshly cooked. We just had a five minute wait. Their Tartare Sauce was tasty, but far too much was provided. Half the portion would have been more than ample; felt a shame to throw most of it away. Portion sizes were perfect for adults. Kids portions were generous. Both of our children kept commenting on how much they were enjoying it. We’d recommend it.

So, according to Trip Advisor this is the 4th best restaurant in Whitby. Perhaps this raised my expectations but I was a little underwhelmed with the haddock and chips. I really wanted to like it more but it was very average. Nice, but average. The service was great though and it is a pleasant place to eat.

First time going here and won’t return, we had a fish and chips, and the fish we had was slimy, tasteless and batter was as soggy as my nans sweaty slipper. Haven’t been off the toilet since. Will not be returning!

Came here a couple of months ago but couldn't get in as we had the dog with us, no dog this time, sat down and ordered haddock chips mushy peas and a couple of pints of local beer, great atmosphere excellent attentive staff fantastic food..............

Stopped in with Family 15/10/24. The Staff were helpful and very friendly. The food was amazing, I had the Halibut with chips, peas, tartar sauce and bread and butter. All washed down with a pot of tea. All of the food was delicious, couldn't have asked for better. Also on another note, the toilets were Immaculate.
