What a lovely meal we all had tonight, as always the staff were so friendly as well, my mum got a seafood platter starter, I've never seen the likes of it, for a starter it was huge, my dad ordered haddock which he said was 10/10, i had halibut, again it was delish, thanks to everyone in Trenchers tonight, it really was a nice night out, you made us feel so welcome.

Took a fish butty home and the bread was quite low quality and semi firm The fish, battered pretty well but was quite mushy. Seemed like it was either previously frozen or laid in water for too long and was quite a mushy texture rather than flakey and fish like

I always thoroughly enjoy eating here with my family when we go to the coast, the service is excellent, the atmosphere is always bustling but the seating makes your dining experience feel private, the menu has a good selection of choices to suit your appetite. On visits between me and my family we've had the classic fish and chips, but also can recommend the prawn salad and poached salmon with new potatoes and hollandaise sauce. There is sometimes a small wait outside the restaurant but it always goes down quite quickly and is worth it!

Beautifully laid out and decor of excellent quality, very impressed with the cleanliness, brightness and layout. The toilets alone would put many a hotel to shame, accessible via a lift from the main restaurant. The fish was fantastic, thin and crispy with the most fantastic tasting haddock, 10/10, the accompanying tartare sauce was lovely. However, sorry to say the chips were not that good. Seemed undercooked, pale and quite hard, and the garden peas were watery and tasteless. The only reason l gave 4 Stars. Staff were friendly and efficient, it was very busy but they did a great job. I would certainly go again but probably have large fish with bread & butter. My friend had a different meal and thoroughly enjoyed it

Lovely warm greeting when we entered the restaurant, our main waitress was absolutely lovely- I say main as three waitresses served us during our meal, and all were warm and friendly. We asked for 2 teas and was asked if we would like sugar or sweetners- which we thought was lovely and also very unusual. We were expecting two cups of tea so was surprised again when two cups, a teapot, a pot of hot water and the requested sweetners all arrived- possibly the difference between north and south restaurants? The fish and chips- one haddock and one plaice arrived arrived after a few minutes wait and we have to say it was the best fish we had had in a long time- the batter was crunchy without being hard and over cooked and the chips were lovely and fresh. The only downside with the meal was that we didn't have enough space for the ginger and lemon Cheesecake that looked and sounded amazing. The restaurant including the toilets and upstairs area is beautifully decorated in art eco designs. We had read previous reviews of Trenchers and were delighted to find they were spot on; we will be back next time we are in Whitby., just wish we could give it more stars.

Nestled in the heart of Whitby, Trenchers is a seafood lover's paradise that combines British charm with a level of hospitality that would impress even the most discerning traveler. Coming from New England, where seafood is practically a cultural staple, I approached my meal at Trenchers with a seasoned palate. I’m pleased to say, it didn’t just meet expectations—it surpassed them. The service at Trenchers is a well-tuned dance of professionalism and warmth. The staff, attentive yet unobtrusive, offered a level of care and courtesy that set the stage for an impeccable dining experience. And when it came to the meal itself, Trenchers truly shines. My dinner, the seafood chowder, was nothing short of a revelation. Each spoonful brought together generous chunks of cod, smoked haddock, prawns, mussels, and salmon, enveloped in a creamy fish and vegetable stock. The interplay of flavors was expertly balanced; the smoked haddock lent a subtle depth, while the prawns and mussels provided a delicate sweetness, making the chowder feel both hearty and elegant. It’s a dish that could easily rival any New England clam chowder, but with a distinctly British twist that I won’t soon forget. For anyone in Whitby—local or visitor alike—Trenchers isn’t just a meal; it’s a memorable experience that captures the essence of seafood dining at its finest. Whether you’re a connoisseur or simply a lover of quality food, Trenchers is a must-visit.

Trenchers in Whitby is a true gem for fish and chips lovers! I went for the classic fish and chips with curry sauce (I’m Northern) and mushy peas, and it was nothing short of perfection. The fish was incredibly fresh with a crisp, golden batter that practically melted in my mouth, while the chips were just the right level of fluffy. The curry sauce added a unique, flavorful twist, and the mushy peas were creamy and well-balanced — a must-try combination. I also started with the scampi, which was deliciously plump, tender, and perfectly cooked. Trenchers has such an inviting atmosphere, with friendly staff who make you feel right at home. It’s no wonder they’re known for some of the best fish and chips in Whitby. I’ll definitely be back for more! Five stars all the way!

Call me a traditionalist, but, for me, fish & chips is the great British fast food, and this was anything but fast, although the food was spectacularly good. Recommended to us by family (locals) as the best chippy in Whitby, they were certainly the best that we've had in Whitby that I can remember. The only draw back was the time it took - making your order inside before waiting outside, by the serving hatch. Luckily for us, it was a mild November evening. Overall, though, the food was well worth the wait and I would definitely recommend.

On 31st October 2024, I visited Trenchers and ordered the following: 1. Homemade Fishcakes (£14.95) — two homemade cod and haddock fishcakes, breaded and served with chipped potatoes and a salad garnish. 2. Steak Pie (£17.95) — tender, 100% prime beef seasoned with herbs, served with creamed or chipped potatoes and garden peas. 3. We also had a pot of traditional Yorkshire Tea (£5.10) . The tea service was charming, with two teapots: one for the strong brew and another for hot water to dilute it, as well as milk on the side. The portions were very generous, and between the two of us, it was more than enough. Everything tasted wonderful. The fishcakes had a lovely crispy coating with a tender filling, and the beef in the Steak Pie was melt-in-the-mouth tender. The staff were courteous and attentive, which made our experience all the more enjoyable. I’d highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for delicious food in a cosy, welcoming atmosphere. The only drawback was the lack of Wi-Fi access for guests. While there is a staff-only Wi-Fi network, visitors aren’t given access, and mobile 4G signal inside is almost non-existent. This could be inconvenient for those needing connectivity.

We were lucky to visit when it was quiet and were the only ones in there; it was all freshly cooked. We just had a five minute wait. Their Tartare Sauce was tasty, but far too much was provided. Had a wonderful day in Whitby today only spoilt by our takeaway fish & chips. I had cod, but was it cod? I don’t think so, wish I had taken a photo before throwing most of it in the bin. It was mainly greasy batter with bits of tasteless fish, little bits, not chunky white flesh as you would expect. Perhaps when you eat in the restaurant side you get real cod, but definitely not cod from the takeaway.

So your response to a customer leaving his honest feedback regarding his genuine concern to your racism is: Don't worry Doug, the old guy your being ageist about !! Will not be able to deal with customers again. 'Your life must be so boring if this is the best you can do for entertainment'. Absolutely shocking! To you this may well be 'Entertainment' but to any decent person this is absolutely out of order and should be exposed... As you will be! Shame.

We’ve visited a few times and it’s been lovely and been made to feel very welcome so decided to visit again. I visited as a birthday treat with family and the food was nice however the lady that served us couldn’t have cared less, never smiled and was very abrupt when asking what we would like, it made us not want to be there and she didn’t look like she wanted to be there either so it was a little disappointing

Went for lunch on Tuesday, 5th Nov. Lovely lady showed me and hubby to a seat. We ordered fish & chip special, which included bread and tea for £18 each. It was quickly brought to us and was delicious. The batter on the fish was really good.
