Food was tasty but the seafood/fish portions were tiny for the price paid. £13 for a tri-scallops appetiser with each scallop no bigger than a 10-pence piece. Shouldn’t these scallops be left in the sea a while longer? The Thai monkfish main course was also tasty but at £25 was tiny. I understand that I will be paying a premium for the stunning Isles of Scilly location but expected more from a high-quality restaurant that is supposed to be showcasing the best in local seafood. I politely gave this feedback to my waiter but no attempt was made by the hotel management team to discuss this feedback before the bill arrived.

Very enjoyable evening had many laughs and many beverages and met with excellent well mannered and polite staff especially the young girl behind the bar who’s name I believe was Skye and the food was very tasty and well textured however the portion size let me down after paying £28 for a main I would hope for a little more then was given

Excellent cooking. Good professional service. Of 4 high end restaurants on Scilly this is the least expensive and only second to The Star Castle, not the historic atmosphere or quite as good a culinary experience.

We went in early evening for a drink & to see what the hotel was like. Two Irish Coffees = £18, which we thought bit steep, especially as it was made without sugar. Perhaps the barman had never made one before. The bar was on the edge of the dining room & the whole place looked as if it was aimed at coach parties.

We ate twice at this restaurant. Most of the other establishments in the area were fully booked for the two nights we ate here and we have dined at Tregarthens on a few occassions in the past. There were plenty of items on the menu to choose from. Vegetarians are catered for which is good for me as I do not eat meat very often. The toasted tofu started was large and I enjoyed it. The fish and chips were good sized portions and tasty. Plenty of accompanyments came with our meals. The lager, pale ale and wine were all flavoursome. The staff were excellent. Very friendly, polite and efficient. 5 stars!

We hadn’t booked anywhere for an evening meal and thought we would try here as everywhere else was full. We enjoyed a glass of wine in the comfy sofa seats with a beautiful view over the harbour, ordered our food, then when it was about ready we were shown to a table. The food was absolutely delicious and cooked beautifully. We returned to the comfy seats after our meal and had a couple more drinks to end the evening. Staff were polite and attentive but also friendly and relaxed.

V. disappointing, for somewhere next to the sea, where was the fish? No lobster, no langoustines, no mussels, no oysters, no soupe de poisson, no plateau de fruit de mer, in fact no fresh fish at all. There was crab on the menu, but when we ordered at 12:40 on a Monday it had all gone. There was little atmosphere and the staff were unhelpful.

Covid clearly affecting the food on offer at this hotel when we visited this week. Lukewarm watery leek and potato soup and only two hot meals to choose from, lasagne or scampi and chips (of the McCain oven chip variety). We were so surprised having seen a number of good reviews but so far every other restaurant or cafe we have visited on St Mary's has served fantastic fresh food. Waiting staff were friendly and helpful. This meal was a real disappointment. With such fantastic views they should be pulling in the customers with a fresh menu that reflects the best that the Island has to offer.

We were staying at the hotel on a DBB basis so had breakfast and dinner in the restaurant for four days. Breakfast was wonderful with a good selection of juices, cereals, fruits and pastries and a varied cooked selection made to order. It really was an excellent start to each day. Dinner had a good selection of dishes with added specials and didn’t disappoint at all. We have big appetites but could only just manage to finish most nights. Service was top class and every dining experience was memorable. Thank you!

We had a really enjoyable stay here. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast was very good, will cooked and with plenty of choice. We thought the evening meal was really good: the options were all enticing and the belly pork we had for our main course was excellent. The service was good too. Our bedroom didn't have a sea view, bit this didn't matter as the comfortable hotel lounge looks out over the harbour: a beautiful view. The bedroom was comfortable and the bathroom clean and modern. The hotel is ideally placed for sight-seeing, being close to the inter-island boat trips. We would highly recommend the hotel.

Ate here last year and had a nice meal. There was nothing nice about the meal we had this year. The white wine came up warm, although strangely the table water was chilled. My duck was over cooked and chewy. It had an uneatable leathery skin and a tasteless sauce. How the cook managed to massacre the vegetables like that I do not know. They only had to be boiled or steamed.

Whole hotel needs a really deep clean. Room was small and tired, though the bed was large and good. Food and cooking poor to average (breakfast and dinner once during the 3 night stay). Extraordinary full afternoon tea, not in a good way. Doorstep sandwiches. One filled with smoked salmon, grated cheese (nasty) and caramelised onion chutney, just did not go together. Ginger parkin cake and carrot cake where huge slices and dry. Massive scones were ok but the cheap jam spoiled it. Staff very friendly and helpful but in need of basic training!

We Have stayed here quite a few times. It has changed. The manager needs to pay more attention to the restaurant. The food was not up to standard. The evening meal was poor, not good value for money and there was not enough especially if you have been out walking all day. We were served one piece of carrot and 2 florets of brocolli which were each the size of a 5 pence piece. When we asked for more vegetables the chef sent the embarassed waitress out to say if we wanted more veg we would have to pay for it. We asked to speak to the chef but he declined to come out of the kitchen all evening. The waitress was embarrassed further when I asked for a side plate she said they did not have one and offerred me a dinner plate. Every morning we had to ask for plates, bowls, milk, orange juice etc. The location is great and the staff are friendly enough. I left two messages for the hotel manager to contact me to discuss some of the issues we had but he also failed to contact me before I left 3 days later. He needs to smarten up service and the food in the restaurant. I will be disappointed if he replies to my review because he should have addressed these issues while I was there and I know he was on duty.

The staff were all pleasant and did their best to be helpful. However, there seemed to be no one in overall charge and at times things were a bit chaotic. The food was tasty, but the portions were small. Also I would say the decor is a little tired and could do with a makeover. It is a shame as this place could be good, but didn't quite hit the mark.

A very disappointing lunch with friends who were here for the first day of their holidays. The food was distinctly average at a high price. The sandwiches were cut as doorsteps (no diagonals here), and my halloumi burger was £11 worth of banal. The chips/french fries were black. The setting was tired (the grass wasn't cut, the tables dirty, and the tables were not cleared quickly so that seagulls had a field day). We went to Tregarthens because the menu looked impressive and the hotel looked smart from the outside. The meal started well - the starter was excellent (langoustine bisque for my husband and a platter for me). However, we'd gone for the crab linguine, which was very disappointing - watery and tasteless. We went to Tregarthens as my family came to Scilly to bring my gran to celebrate her 87th birthday, having looked forward to it all week we got to the restaurant where the staff seemed very untrained and unorganised, after we'd ordered food we still had to ask for a drinks menu, the bread that followed was lovely. The starters were lovely but the birthday lady decided to wait for her main. The mains that were lovely were the tarragon chicken, steak and crab salad but sadly my Gran ordered the vegetable chow mein... I wish I'd taken a photograph it was huge and dry just a mass of noodles and dry veg it had no flavour and no sauce. My poor gran ate a little veg but left 90%of the meal. When plates were cleared we told the staff it hadn't been nice and to be fair they asked if she wanted anything else. However we'd all finished and had a young child to take home. Then when we went to pay at reception tether asked how it was and again Dad mentioned that the birthday girls meal had been inedible and they didn't take it off the bill, offer a free drink, apologise or even recognise it was the ladies birthday. It was such a disappointment as everything else was lovely but the untrained staff and lack of understanding or kindness was a dampener on a much anticipated night. As a local person I'd be hesitant to take family back again.

Since 1985 we have salivated over the menus posted daily at the gate post, but as we stay on the off-islands, never eaten an evening meal there, so we weren't surprised when they booked a table at Tregarthens when we recently all stayed on St Mary's. However the linguine was a disappointment and the girls couldn't mix mojitos. Granted they were so bad they didn't have to pay for them! The service was excellent: attentive without being over-bearing. Food was excellent. I had the chicken livers on ciabatta as a starter which were sublime. My wife had chilli prawns and colleague had garlic prawns: empty plates confirmed how much they enjoyed these. For the main course I had crab and prawn linguini- not as good as the starter, but our colleague had this last night and said that it was superb. My wife had crab salad - I've never seen so much crab on a plate: not surprisingly my petite wife couldn't finish the dish but the expression on her face showed how much she enjoyed it. Our colleague had John Dory - I tasted it and it was really succulent and tasty. Both of them had no space for dessert: I had lemon posset which was a perfect end to the meal: really sharp, sweet and light. They have two menus: a standard menu and a daily one: the latter as long and as interesting as the former. Wished I were staying longer, as there was much I would have liked to try!

Very slow and non attentive service for drinks and food. Menu items were missing and not informed to us until placement of order. Positive point is the lovely view over the bay if you are lucky enough to have a table by the window - We did.

Dropped in for tea hoping for sandwiches, but no luck. Cream tea was excellent though, with bucket-sized cups. The scones were enormous, light and fluffy. We decided not to risk the fearsome gulls and ate inside.

We have been to this hotel many times purely for drinks and coffee, we haven't eaten here but just love the polite, attentive staff. The lounge bar is comfortable and the views are great. It is so nice to enjoy hotel facilities and feel welcome despite being non residents of the hotel. Also the free wifi is the best quality on the whole of St Marys!

Friendly service and a great spot to watch the sunset. We didn't eat, so can't comment on the food. Dog friendly outside, and fine with you taking your dog with you to the bar – not sure about the restaurant area. Decor perhaps more appealing to older guests – but lovely friendly staff, reasonable drinks, and would visit again.

Popped in for lunch after walking around the Garrison but decided to have a cream tea instead. It didn't disappoint! We sat outside and enjoyed the views while eating 2 warm scones, 2 pots of jam and a large dollop of clotted cream with some fresh raspberries and blueberries. All of this washed down with a large pot of tea complete with extra hot water, plenty of milk and decent sized cups and saucers. Good service from friendly staff.

Popped in early morning before travelling to the airport. No problem about being a non resident at the Hotel. Nice welcome, excellent breakfast, good service. Lovely views across the quay and sea front from the restaurant.

Popped in about 11 today having seen their notice board advertising all day cream tea, all day means after mid day, shame, after walking round the Garrison really fancied some clotted cream, staff seemed a little uninformed.

There is nothing nicer than sitting outside at Tregarthen's looking over the sea and harbour enjoying a cream tea. Everything is nicely presented and the staff are very attentive.

As a non resident of the hotel, we were treated like royalty, the perfect level of polite service with none of the obsequious fawning some pretentious places think appropriate. They reserved my preferred table, adjusted the menu to suit my conservative tastes and delivered an exceptional rump of lamb and a hake risotto. The souffles were also perfect. Whoever trained the staff deserves a star award, as does the chef. Thank you to all who made this meal memorable.

Decided to pop in for a coffee on the way back to our camp site as we spotted the views from the terrace. Staff were most accommodating despite our somewhat bedraggled appearance in full walking gear. Great value and extremely friendly staff. Only wish we had longer on the Scilly's so we could experience dinner service. The menu looked fantastic! It really is a testament to the staff when customers simply popping in for a coffee are treated just as well as those staying in the master suite and eating 5 course dinners a night. Keep up the fantastic work!

Super meal, minimal menu choice but beautifully prepared and cooked. Waiting staff attentive but slow. Good job we weren't on a hurry. Sit and have a drink in the lounge first and coffee there after too. Great vista.

Staying last year in Tregarthen's hotel I know the quality of the dinner. This year we go back only for diner but again it was a surprise in a good way. All rowers enjoyed the dinner as it was well cooked against a reasonable price. Besides the service level was according what you expect.

I wouldnt want to knock this restaurant because theres nothing really bad about it but there is also nothing that really shines. The hotel itself is a little dated, the restaurant is okay though I asked for a table with a view (the main reason for going there was to watch the sun set) and we were given a table with a view (mostly) of roofs, and a very dirty window at that so that was a bit of a disappointment. The food was nicely presented and quite tasty but no great shakes. The waiting staff were efficient.Probably overall experience is what I would expect from most hotel restaurants so as, it seems, there aren't a lot of restaurants to choose from in St Marys, I wouldn't rule out eating there again.

We stayed here for 4 nights last year and ate in the restaurant the first night, it was excellent food and my husband still mentions the fish dish he had now. The breakfast each morning was great you could have the full English or just order parts of it, which was good, the room was a little small but as we usually use a room to get washed and dressed and to sleep in it was no big deal. We had a fantastic view over to Tresco (which did cost us) but was lovely. The reception were fantastic and very helpful (some how our luggage went to sent St Martin but it was soon back in our room).overall we loved the isles of Scilly, the people and are going back for a week this year

We decided to try the hotel for lunch with our children but came away hungry and disappointed. Th atmosphere was like sitting in a church. Very very quiet, feeling uncomfortable with 2 chatty Young children. We ordered, or at least tried, but everything we picked was unavailable. I opted for mussels in an ale and herb sauce and I received mussels in cream and garlic. My husband had a Steak salad, tasty but small. The children's option was to choose 5 items from a selection. When it arrived the the cucumber sticks were actually wafer thin slithers , more of a garnish than part of the meal. The apple was forgotten, when we requested it it was served as they cucumber was. The homemade chips were obviously frozen chips and came in a bowl no bigger than you would serve sugar in. We were not offered any condiments and there were no members of staff present to ask for any. Overall very disappointed.

Firstly, I am local….. Secondly, I speak the truth… Thirdly, I am glad that the prices remain reasonable to the working class family man…… Although the decor might be a little bit tiring, the hospitality compensates…… On the last at least…. This place does amazing food…. Fantastic variety and the special board fluctuates…. I just don’t think that anybody that is down earth Can fully understand what it must be like to run a business. It’s like the same goes spread all your cards out and choose wisely. I have eaten all over the world up and down throughout the UK…. And I don’t remotely care what negativity comments I read on here about the coppice…. I salute every individual under the Employment of the establishment. Therefore, I totally recommend anyone to try this place. If you are too posh to wash and this place is not for you.. And if you do not suffer by piles Then clearly, you are the perfect backside …. And as Dell boy once said…. Bonjour …..

My elderly parents stayed overnight at this charming local inn. They were, from the start, treated with huge care and respect. Staff went above and beyond to cater for their needs which included swapping rooms to allow easier access, housing (and charging) a mobility scooter at some inconvenience and finally ensuring they left and returned safely from their social commitment. Their kindness was amazing. And the room itself was fresh, clean and well maintained with all the charm you would expect in this lovely building.

Went for a coffee and was told could only have take away as it was 15:40 on a Sunday, my wife and I are both disabled and I have an ostomy and asked to use the loo and was told I could only if I buy something, so it cost me 7 quid for two takeaway coffees just to use the loo....thanks national trust

We booked afternoon tea for family celebrations. Afternoon tea was presented beautifully and was delicious. Our waitress Pinka was friendly and looked after us. The special offer was a bonus too. Highly recommended!
