Based on previous reviews, we chose to take our family of 7 for an evening meal whilst staying in Portreath for a few days. Bearing in mind that it is high season, the only choice of food was a limited selection, as described by the lady who seemed to be the manager, as being three 'meals in a basket': sausage, chicken and something else, all with chips. Either things have changed for the worse since the reviews 2 weeks/4 weeks ago OR they are totally unrepresentative of the food and atmosphere here. Having 3 women of a certain age on the terrace, effing and blinding in the presence of young children is NOT what I would expect of a family-orientated environment. The Waterfront Restaurant which adjoins the pub looks like it has been closed for some considerable time, potentially since last season. This pub is heading the same way. Avoid at all costs.....unless what I have outlined above us your idea of fun.

The Waterfront is in an excellent location, overlooking the harbour. Great for wave watch on Spring tides, especially on the terrace in the evening sun. The pub has a good range of different food at very reasonable prices. Our favourite is the Thai pork patties, severed in small casseroles with a half baguette. We normally also order a portion of his excellent chips. Cask ale normally available along with a good range of gins and all the usuals. We have been going to this pub for around 25 years. The food range at present is the best ever - not basic pub grub.

Dropped in by boat after work one Wednesday. From the moment we disembarked we found the whole experience to be wonderful The landlord was not only friendly and welcoming but he runs a belter of a pub. The prices did not break the bank either. It was a Wednesday evening. Apparently the evening for local bikers to rock up. What a lovely eclectic mix of families we had. Honestly you have everything you need if you drop in to the Waterfront. The food was incredibly reasonably priced, which is unusual in a place like this. £7 for a huge plate of ham egg and chips which we couldn't finish. A humongous meat feast pizza with home and smoked sausage etc for £14 All very much home made.

We came as a group of 11 plus 2 dogs in the off season (mid October). The service was excellent and came with a warm smile and conversation. We were shocked to see this lovely Cornish pub completely empty and stayed for the afternoon for some lovely food and cider (hot chocolate for the kids). The kids were delighted to be able to play a game of chess with their aunty and uncle while we saw out some stormy weather and warmed up after the beach right next door (which is stunningly beautiful during all seasons and dog friendly from the end of August throughout the winter). A perfect afternoon on a wet October day and only a stones throw from Redruth. I’d encourage anyone to visit this honestly run and welcoming pub!

This is a very friendly pub that not many visitors seem to know about. Damien the landlord is very knowledgeable about all things Cornish. The food is excellent quality and very reasonably priced and there is a good range of local beer and spirits on offer. There is a good variety of music and entertainment most nights including pub quiz and karaoke. All this in the setting of the historic harbour of Portreath. Finally I must not forget to mention the gorgeous pub dog who gives a lovely welcome to returning patrons!

£1 paid to “charity” for use of toilet. Won’t be returning with family or friends for food or drink. Second time the inn has requested something from me whether charging for the toilet for “charity” or requiring me to scan a QR before I could get a drink back in 21 - even though I didn’t have a smartphone. Thought the place might had changed and was considering giving a second chance but now just annoyed about the continuous requirements. Never had any problems with the Portreath Arm Hotel, they never questioned why I was there and if I could use the toilet before I chose to buy a drink. They never required anything from me. If it had been mid season I would have understood, they had 2 customers max - I could of been a 3rd, I had two friends outside, the inn could have cashed in on three drinks if they had just been a more relaxed on their inn house regulations for the toilet usage!

Sat on the patio of the Waterfront, watching folks having a great time in the sea and on the little beach, then later seeing all the locals turn out with their dogs and swim, a blue sky overhead and bright sunlight, eating a delicious fish chowder home made in the pub's kitchens - this has to be my idea of Heaven. Everyone were so friendly and the staff absolutely first class. Really, a wonderful time was had by all.

The Waterfront is set right adjacent to the former boat construction slipway in Portreath and a small beach is now in place immediately to the front of the patio area. This beach is tidal as just the other side of the now fixed gate is the rest of Portreath Harbour and then the North Atlantic Ocean. The gate allows the tides to rise and fall making the beach an ideal safe area for children to swim and you can sit on the patio enjoying a drink or perhaps meal whilst keeping a close eye o the children and looking out beyond to witness the gifted local youngers diving in to the sea. Fishing boats pass by the gate and their catch is taken ashore on the Victorian harbour side just across the way. Although it appears modern, the central part of the pub is actually the old chandlers. There is a wide range of local beers available with Skinner's Brewery 'Porthleven' being amongst the more popular. An impressive range of spirits are available at both bars. The food is home cooked and excellent and the pizzas and local catches are first class. Coffees and teas are also served and the coffee is of the highest quality. A pool table is available and the pub is extremely popular with locals who pop in from work with many of them having connections with the working vessels. It is always a great experience to have a chat with the locals who once you get to know them, can be good fun. The licensee is a very accommodating chap and has a good, dry sense of humour. There is a car parking charge and it is always worth having a chat with the charming bar staff about this when you purchase your drinks and food. It is always great fun when the owners very friendly dog rushes out to meet you and he loves to play with his ball and the pub is dog friendly. Several events occur at the Waterfront and there was a most engaging quiz night recently. It is always a pleasure to pop in whenever I find myself in Portreath.

This is a pub I will never be drinking in, after seeing my girls off paddle boarding from the harbour today, I headed off to the beach and made the mistake of passing through the pub grounds, I was greeted by 7 or 8 customers, who informed me that I couldn't get through that way, I was a little confused as you clearly could get through, after some very hostile conversation, it came to light that there is no right of way. The landlord then came out, to back his customers, I calmly walkd out the way I entered after being called a TOSSER by one of his customers...lovely people!

I just don't understand the bad reviews here, it's like they are talking about a totally different place! We arrived just after noon on Sunday last, we weren't booked in for lunch but we took the chance. I rang from the car park to see if there were any spaces left, and we were lucky and booked for 1pm when they started serving their roast dinners. We sorted the car out and went to the bar for a couple of soft drinks while we waited. It's clearly and politely marked that masks don't need to be worn at the tables, but they must be worn at the bar. One review I read on here clearly shows the writer having an issue with this simple polite request, which to me shows what they themselves must be like! The young man and young lady behind the bar couldn't do enough for us, they were truly lovely and a credit to Cornwall, as was, the witty friendly chap who we took to be the landlord? Our meals arrived and were absolutely beautiful, so much flavoursome tender roast beef! We each had enough beef to feed desperate dan! It was all beautifully cooked and how on earth they manage to cook the broccoli so well without even a hint of soggy is a skill that personally evades us! We wish we had asked! Carrots, cabbage, crispy potatoes and parsnips, All the veg was cooked to perfection and I can safely say it was the best pub roast we have had since we chanced on similar in the Cotswolds 12 years ago! The staff were fantastic and when they asked if we were OK and did we need anything you just knew it wasn't lipservice and that they would get us anything we needed. Thus place is a hidden gem. Ignore these stupid reviews from people with "london attitudes" you are in Cornwall, where people are lovely despite having to deal with grumpy people all day. Treat people nicely and they will reward you with a smile and helping hand. Cornish people put up with a lot of our crap, all day, every day, and they are the salt of this good earth. First class pub and the best of Cornwall. Thanks guys, you make us wish we lived in Portreath!

We was going for lunch as we had been there a few years ago and enjoyed it. the man sitting outside was drinking coffee and had a dog, he said we don't open until 12 noon, fine it was nearly 12 so we said we would wait, he didn't seem pleased, we then realised he was the publican, when we eventually went in we asked for a coffee but he said no we don't do coffee, even though while sitting there he made himself one, his dog was viscous nearly bit my sister, he then said don't touch the dog it's a guard dog, but never warned us beforehand. The place looked dark and uninviting, we had a drink and left without lunch, the man was so unfriendly we didn't want to stay. We will not be going back to the waterfront again.

Went for a quiet drink and was greeted by the grumpiest barman/landlord I’ve ever met. He made us feel guilty for being there and he was rude about the strict face mask policy while his pals sat around flouting the same rules willy nilly. Finished our drinks and got out of there sharpish. There are plenty other superior establishments in portreath, notably the portreath arms, which was such a welcome contrast to the vinegar stench and gloomy atmosphere of the waterfront.

After selecting The Waterfront Inn for our lunch as it looked quiet we soon found out why. As we were putting on our masks, by choice, the person that we assumed to be the landlord tackled us only two tables onto the terrace. "Have you got the NHS app?" he asked. I replied " No, but we will happily leave contact details." He mistakenly told us that it was a legal requirement to have the app and it was not acceptable to leave contact details. It was the only way that he could tell if we had a negative test in the last two days!! We are both double vaccinated and offered to show our cards and have had no reason to be tested. I informed him that it was not a legal requirement and he insisted that it had been since September of 2019!!! This ill informed, anti social person should not be a pub landlord. My wife commented that he didn't look clean enough to be serving food and drink and we left. We proceeded to spend £30 at the Hub where our custom was appreciated. We are both retired and were smartly dressed. Here is a man that I suspect knows the value of his property as flats and is deliberately driving away custom to be able to claim that it is no longer viable. I hope that I am mistaken. What a jerk!See many other reviews on the same theme.

Had a brilliant night at the Inn with a few friends a couple of weeks ago. Great beer, fab location (especially if you can catch the sunset) and enjoyed tasting a few local spirits (ask about the flumps one). A great spot right on the harbour with a real beach theme. We received a very warm welcome from everyone in the bar which we hadn't expected on a quiet Tuesday night. Would love to go back, and if we are ever nearby we will be sure to do so. To anyone reading the reviews about the landlord and/or covid, Damien was a fab host and I would encourage anyone who likes a good beer, relaxed atmosphere, and a good laugh to ignore the negative reviews here. The owner is doing what he can to keep his business going, and to keep himself, his staff and his customers safe. That might mean you have to respect his wishes at times even if you don't agree with them or if they are not written into law - no different to most establishments, even before the pandemic.

This bar manager uses COVID guidelines to deter customers so he can get back outside to sit drinking with his buddies! Arrived fully masked, approached the bar but he then barked at another member of our party who was just approaching the door ‘have you got a mask?’ Which was in his hand just about to put on! He then turned to me and said ‘do you all have the track and trace app?’ I confirmed we did, he then said ‘you’ll have to go back outside and scan in’ I said I was more than happy to do that, but just for conversation pointed out that it was no longer a requirement. The response was ‘it is if you want to get served here’ we walked back out to scan in, but then decided we’d rather take our business elsewhere - though I did have some sympathy as the guy obviously had some anxiety around Covid. However as we left this was proven totally wrong as he could be suddenly observed maskless returning to sit with a table full of buddies - no social distancing at all! I am always fully compliant with Covid issues and support the wearing of masks and track and trace - but even I was confounded by this behaviour!

Surly barkeep for sure. Bearded dude, looks like he knows how to party, and his character certainly seems to be the focus of most reviews. This pub is beachfront, the best drinking view in porthreath perhaps so, but nothing to write home about.Staff are continuing to uphold Covid measures as much as possible - even ‘closing’ early to limit the customer numbers down to the real crowd. Thank you for your reply you can add telling lies to your rudeness there was 4 adults 1 had already used the app ,instead of posting untrue comments maybe learn some anger management and people skills we all can’t be wrong ,told this story to lots of people had a good laugh about very rude scruffy man who badly runs a lovely placed pub on the beach what a waste

This place will certainly go out of business if the management does not smarten up the bartender and give him some lessons in people management. He was scruffy, arrogant, disrespectful and his language atrocious. Could not give an overall rating of minus 00

Rude landlord, spoke to me like I was 10. Happy to follow the covid rules, but not when I was spoken to the way he did. Not sure he is aware of how he comes across...

We have visited The Waterfront Inn twice in as many weeks, each time we have been made very welcome. The approach to the COVID restrictions is reassuring and should be adopted by all business. We had roast diner today and it was the best roast dinner we have ever had, it was like your Nan had cooked it. We will be going back very soon as The Waterfront Inn is the best kept secret in Portreath.

Nice little pub and grub and free parking for patrons too. The guy who runs it though needs to lighten up with this Covid 19 malarkey. personally thought he was very rude. __________________________________________________ Response from the owner (Before he eddied it) OK so over 9000 people a week died over Christmas because of the light hearted attitude people took. In 14 months UK pubs have been open for 5 months because of light hearted attitude. __________________________________________________ My reply. Sorry, you should really shut up shop and go home where its safe. There was only TWO people in the bar, me and the nice lady working out my order from the other side of the bar.. You came marching in asking me to go back out side, when i said that i was paying my bill, then using the toilet you then said that i needed to be two meters from the bar... needles to say that i would have to be only millimetres from staff in order to use the card machine. I was wearing a mask and being totally responsible. The risks all come from you and the staff who handle our food and drink. While its the first and possibly last time i use this place people don't want to listen to you banging on about your hatred for communism and those that ask you to remove your shoes when entering their property. The sooner that you realise that the negative reviews on here are more about you than the establishment, the sooner you can get in to therapy. Owners comment. "Why would they want me to remove my shoes in the first place? " I rest my case, you're in denial. As for me being personal, you made it personal. Now is not the time to argue with those that have a problem with you, not the pub, but for you to start building bridges..

Wouldn't serve us because we couldn't install track and trace app on our phone but he had time to chat for 10 mins to the people on the table behind us.

Sat down on an empty table to be greeted rudely and aggressively by landlord we’re all reserved we asked if we could take a drink he said no all reserved clearly tables were not reserved. Band loud and awful made us have to eat inside at another venue. Inside dirty rude staff and undesirables in his beer garden.

Not impressed. My head was bitten off, for not having a mask on, I wasn't even at the door to go in.

I cannot comment on the food only on one of the people working there. As I was walking around Portreath I walked along the harbour, I came to what appeared to be a dead end but for a walk across a car park & along a pathway by The Waterfront which would lead across to some steps. As I was walking past the establishment a staff member came out and told me I need to wear a mask. However, I informed him that I was not coming in to order I was just passing by to get to the steps. He then told me that I should have gone the other way round (which I wasn't aware of until then) & that he would have to sanitise all the tables now as I had walked past them. Now I can understand that he may have been stressed as it is the first day of indoor hospitality opening and I can understand that some people may want to go further than the government guidelines in being Covid secure, however firstly I was abiding by the law & secondly there are means & ways of expressing this without being abrasive. A simple, ' Would you mind wearing a face mask as you go past here?' or 'Would you mind going round the back?' would have sufficed & certainly left me feeling less like something he'd just trodden in. As a first impression of this place it has not been a good one & I daresay we will not be visiting during our stay. Re-edit: Addressing new & old points raised by the owner. 1. I asked you to wear a mask quite politely - I would sort of agree with this point. Your initial remark was fairly polite. 2. asked you to sit down quite politely - why would I sit down if I wasn't planning on eating or drinking there? 3. You then stood as close as you could (within 2m) in an area that can hold 66 people and started saying you were going to continue through regardless - Lie. You came across my path & asked me to wear a mask. I politely told you I wasn't going inside & that I was just trying to get to some steps & as soon as you indicated that you didn't want me carrying on, I stopped in my tracks & was actually about to put my facemask on until I processed the absurdity of the situation. At no point did I come within 2m of you & certainly didn't try to get as close as possible to you. Also, although you state The Waterfront has a capacity of 66, as far as I could see there was just 1 woman sitting at a bench & I wasn't even sure you were open, I thought she might just be sitting down for a rest; until you came out of the building. 4. The law is if you enter a pub beer garden you must be wearing a mask - This contradicts your edited comment, 'It was the law to wear a mask outside until Monday 17th April' as this is the day I happened to pass by; as can be seen from my initial comment. 5. and you must participate in the track and trace - I do, as you would see from the venue history on my NHS Covid-19 app. I must admit I wasn't aware that you had to Check In using the app if you are just passing through an outdoor space but having looked at the guidelines I guess you could technically argue I was 'visiting'. However at no point during the conversation was I told to check in. 6. If you see an area with brightly painted tables next to a pub you can assume with good reason that is a pub beer garden - Looking at Facebook your benches do appear to be brightly coloured which doesn't show on your website or Google, so I stand corrected, I just don't remember them being as such. However, I don't think this is particularly important anyway. 7. My absurdity comment relates to your words, not Covid restrictions, which I completely support. I think by persecuting someone for innocently trying to get to some steps & arriving at the conclusion that they need to apologise to all the families that have lost loved ones during the pandemic emphasises my point. 8. I think your point about being obnoxious is a case of projection, as I was polite throughout our conversation, which contrasts starkly with your demeanour. The points I have raised here are to address slander directed at me by yourself. This will be my last comment on this matter.

Visited today to be greeted by a very surly member of staff instructing us to put a mask on in the outside area before we sat down. When asked to track and trace explained that we did not have a smart phone so he said he could not serve us. All other pubs we have visited on our holiday are able to take our name and phone number. He insisted it takes too long - there were only 3 tables occupied! He was very rude. We intended having a meal there but after this experience will never visit this pub again.

Visited Portreath whilst on holiday this week and fancied a beer. While the setting was pleasant enough and the beer was cold and refreshing, the information with regards to covid was inaccurate. We were told we HAD to use the track and trace app and EVERYWHERE should be telling us to use it now as it's a legal requirement. I got the impression that if we didn't use it we wouldn't get served. I understand that establishments would want to encourage their guests to use it as it's far less administrative for them but the fact is it's a requirement of the establishment to have it displayed but as a customer you can scan the QR code OR give personal details. It would be more useful and more understandable if they said we would like you to use the app to save us the time rather than try and tell us we HAVE to when that's not the case. Just be honest and upfront with your customers. That way they can chose if they want to drink at your pub.

Visited in October 2020 and the management were fully compliant with Covid regulations. Waitress was very friendly and polite. It was such a nice day that we sat outside and we enjoyed a basket meal. I can recommend the Scampi & Chips. Family members enjoyed the local cider and the service was very efficient.

We had booked a table in advance. On arrival with our masks on we were not greeted with a “ hello how are you? Would you like a table?” We were greeted with “ sit round the corner!” We explained we had booked a table but this was not acknowledged. The young bar person came to our table to take our drinks orders - no mention of our table booking was made or requested. We ordered a Guinness and a half lager. My partner who is a Guinness drinker could not finish his drink as it tasted like the pump had not been used for a while. I could not enjoy my drink as the damp awful stench of the venue was overwhelming!!! We sat in a table in an empty bar right next to filthy kitchen equipment placed outside of the kitchen. Consequently we paid for our unfinished drinks ( again being reprimanded for walking round to the bar by a bar man) without the staff mentioning our dinner table reservation and we swiftly left. We will not return. The venue is in serious need of some TLC and a deep clean to eradicate the offensive odour.

I’ve stayed at a lot of different Hotels & Pub B&B in Fowey and other places in Cornwall!! But the king has surpassed them all beautiful, super clean room fabulous view. The staff was amazing and friendly. They were knowledgeable of the area gave me information even though I’ve been there several times of NEW places to visit. The food absolutely delicious from lobster ravioli starter to the scallop plus their Sunday roast. I will definitely be staying there again!! Last, but not least for once they had pillows that were plush not the flat hard as a Rock ones you usually get because I’m allergic to downfilled ones!! I could not say enough great things about staying there. Well done everyone at the King of Prussia. 5 stars
