Greeted instantly at the door, nipped in for a nosey at the cake counter decided on 3 things for £15 which is on a more expensive scale but city prices for quality cakes and treats woman on the counter stated the offer 5 for £20 absolutely gorgeous also on too good to go so bargains available.

First time in new cafe today and unfortunately was dissapointed with food quality. In the previous location the quiche was always delicious home made & very generous portion size. The quiche I received today looked very much like a shop bought supermarket quiche and was quite tasteless as were the chunky chips, definitely not worth £12. Such a shame as the cafe itself is very nice and staff were lovely. I would return but only for a coffee and cake which looked lovely at the counter.

The interior design of the new Treats cafe is lovely - both pretty and very clean. The food was satisfactory, unfortunately the gluten free bread served is the cheap, sweet bread, so I didn’t particularly like the toastie. That being said, the filling and side salad was good, and my only complaint was the gluten free bread (it’d be nice if they could get a different one). The staff were so wonderful and very friendly! They were excellent at answering questions - very patient and approachable.

Hiya!! My name is Josiah, I’m new to Durham as a city, being a 1st year and all, and I’m very much still getting used to the area. However if there is one thing I can ascertain for visitors, locals, and new students alike is that this cafe is exceptional. I inquired to order for a fresh cream cake for my girlfriend’s birthday after struggling to find a bakery and/or other establishment that might aid my need as of the 6-8 of October. Much to my surprise I was informed my request had been accepted!! No less than by a business that doesn’t routinely take orders, so in a sense I became a special exception. The outcome was fantastic!!!!! For a business that doesn’t routinely offer a personal bakery side the result blew me away! A beautiful 3 tier fresh cream and chocolate sponge cake that I have about 50 photos of, she loved it!!!

What a lovely little place. The young man who served us was an absolute hoot, loved him. Food was tasty and the coffee was delicious. Can’t wait to return to try some of the cakes, which all looked incredible. Prices are a little on the high side, but it’s to be expected in Durham. In my opinion, it was worth every penny.

Although the staff are lovely the food at Treats was very disappointing. I ordered soup and sourdough bread I was charged extra for the bread and it was hard and stale. My soup was lukewarm. I also ordered a coffee for myself which didn’t arrive. When I asked about it I was brought one but that was lukewarm as well. The food really is unacceptable.

been here many times when it was on the other side of the street and I have always given brilliant reviews, honestly given. the new premises are beautiful, very inviting. however, the prices are not. they have increased so much that we will not be back. the food and service lovely as it always was, but £32 for 2 coffees and 2 brunch light meals is not. As 2 pensioners wanting a treat, it will no longer be at Treats.

Visited in Aug for coffee, tea and one scone and the price came to £8.35. This was ok but I’ve just visited today in Sept and got the same items and the bill came to £10.20 !!!! I queried this and was told that after 10 o’clock this was the new price!!!, so between the hours of 10 and 3 pm there is a premium price . So is this dynamic pricing?

Staff very lovely and food on the whole was very good- highly recommend the vegan biscoff cake and the brownie. The only disappointing thing was the lack of topping on the jacket potato, particularly considering the price. Arrived on a Saturday at 1300 so a very busy time, the staff got us a table quickly and took our orders promptly and were very professional and polite, they also checked on allergies which often gets missed. We ordered our food and even though it was busy it seemed to be cooked fresh and arrived in about 10 minutes, which shows that their system from order, to kitchen to waiting staff is very smooth and well drilled. The food portions were generous and tasted great and the cost was very competitive for the type of establishment and its location in the centre of Durham a stones throw from the town hall and Riverside Bridge. Iced latte, cappuccino, eggs florentine, avocado and goats cheese on sourdough and a dessert each (lemon tart and lemon meringue - not pictured) came to £35. I will come again when in Durham.

I’ve been going to treats for a long time, the new place is ok, music was a bit weird so the atmosphere was a bit strange? The food was very over priced too, £9 for a cheese savoury sandwich on standard white bread that was soggy and lacking in cheese with a tiny side salad and coleslaw is robbery imo. Don’t think I’ll be back any time soon which is a shame because I used to go whenever I was in Durham. Service was good but overall disappointing.

From the warm welcome, prompt service and well cooked food the team here really deserve their full 5 stars. Their prices are good too, with clean tables and a good vibe, this is a nice place to visit. Just a note to visitors who have difficulty climbing stairs, there are a lot of stairs to negotiate but if you can manage these, you will be well rewarded for doing so. __________________________________________ Oh dear, on my follow up visit, some weeks after the above review - what a disaster! My dinner (on a Sunday - not a Sunday dinner as the owners response suggests) was tip top but one member of staff in particular made it clear my visit needed to come to an end by grabbing the teapot and shouting is it finished!! Obviously my hour at Treats Cafe & Tea Room was up, they'd got my money and she had decided that I needed to move on. Disgraceful behaviour really, I'm sure she meant "please enjoy your time with us and we appreciate your custom" but it came out like 'Sod off' This was very obvious to other diners who raised their eyebrows at her manner and commented that she must have got out of the wrong side of the bed that morning!! So I won't be back, there are plenty of options available in Durham without the sauce of that waitress. Be warned, hold onto your cup or it's likely to be snatched away! Then they'll say you didn't really visit them at all, that it was somewhere else 😂

Disappointing. Staff were very friendly, the café looks lovely but the food was not great. The cheese scone was so dry and had no taste. We asked for one piece of toast for a toddler and were charged the same price as a toasted teacake. When we asked about this, the staff said we have to put it through the till as something. We could have bought 2 loaves of bread for the same price. No bread buns for breakfast sandwiches. The only positive was the strawberry cheesecake, which was really tasty.

Visited the new treats today. I have never been before, but apparently, there was an upstairs version opposite. Greeted, told to just grab the table right in the doorway for two, all shiny new, pleasant surroundings but to be expected given its newness. Decor pleasant and cute teapots. We opted for cold drinks, diet cokes, glass bottles all good, and pretty standard for price point. I tried to order the fish brioche bun, but there was no fish left. Panic ordered the roast beef brioche instead, same as my husband. Drinks came first, all good . Not huge tables for two. When the plates came had to have a shuffle to fit them on. Looked ok, small dressed side salad and a small dish of coleslaw with the beef brioche bun....OK, firstly nice salad, pleasant. Coleslaw was really good and Creamy but the brioche.....it looked like it was straight from an Aldi packet,I get that a brioche is a sweetened bread, fair play, expected . However, the caramelised onions, just weren't. A caramelised onion is cooked down for its own natural sugars to soften and brown this was soft onion with sugar thrown in and it made it overly sweet and a bit odd, making the beef, flavourless such a shame. Secondly, guys....what's going on with your prices? Please note that I was looking for a light lunch, a sandwich would have been perfect but.....I don't think I've ever been in an establishment ever where you pay £9 for roast beef hot brioche, Have a salmon and prawn option for £10 and the price for an egg mayonnaise sandwich is £13?!? Afternoon tea for two people is only £22 for sandwiches, scone, cake and drink per person which makes it very good value! Had to go looking to pay and leave so not too attentive on the staff front. Please note this is strictly constructive criticism and I do appreciate how hard running a food establishment is, if you don't know what's wrong you can't fix it😊 also.....tuna? Is there a reason for it's absence on your menu?

I recently visited the newly reopened Treats Tea Room Cafe and was thoroughly impressed by the luxurious experience it offers. The new branch is beautifully decorated with natural colors that create a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying a delightful meal. The cafe serves fine coffee that is rich and aromatic, making it a great spot for coffee enthusiasts. Their selection of sweets is excellent, offering a variety of delicious treats that cater to all tastes. The lemon cake, in particular, stood out with its perfectly balanced flavor and moist texture, making it a must-try. One of the highlights of my visit was the traditional English breakfast, which was both hearty and flavorful. It was evident that high-quality ingredients were used, contributing to an authentic and satisfying meal. Additionally, the afternoon tea service was exceptional, featuring a delightful assortment of finger sandwiches, scones, and pastries, all beautifully presented and delicious. Overall, Treats Tea Room Cafe provides a luxurious and enjoyable dining experience with its fine coffee, excellent sweets, and traditional English offerings. It's the perfect place to unwind and indulge in some of the best treats the city has to offer. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors.

I think it's amazing that this tea room has stayed open in recent years given the lockdown, inflation etc and it seems to be popular but it's not for me. I've been shocked at some of the prices for an English breakfast here when a good English can be had elsewhere at a much lower price. What puts me off Treats Tea Room is the stairs- one flight up to the cafe, another up to the loos. Sadly, a recent lunch visit was rather disappointing overall... The table was so sticky that the napkin placed on it was stuck fast! The halloumi salad desperately needed some sort of dressing, as it became very dry, very quickly. A needle thin line of balsamic vinegar is not sufficient. The halloumi became tough and leathery as it cooled, and was chokingly hard work to get down. The addition of blueberries and strawberries was just wrong, and didn't have any place in the dish. I picked them out and ate them afterwards, as dessert! My companion described her omelette as ' Rather grey and flabby. Not great.' This was our first post-Covid visit, and we were sad to note that some old favourites were no longer on the menu, including the superb homemade lasagne, and the spicy chicken paninis. We've loved this place over the years, but the current menu has limited appeal, and the increase in 'brought in' goods (including pies) diminishes its homely quality. So, in various ways we found it to be not quite what it was... However, the young staff are friendly and hard-working.

Visited here while in the area for tea and some cake. Firstly the place stunk of a burnt oven. Scorching and stuffy in there. Tables were filthy. The lady cleaned the table but it was then really sticky. Ordered a millionaire shortbread, cake and a tea and a coffee. All items arrived separately which was a bit strange. Tea came with no cup. Had to wait 5 minutes for that,, and then another 5 minutes later were told no millionaire shortbread. Service wasn’t great but there was plenty people working! I’m sure it’s a cute little place but we didn’t feel that and we came out absolutely stinking of burning and cooking!

omg this was amazing! The cream tea was such a good price and filled 2 adults plus children. The super milk shake was great too. Great service. So glad they could squeeze us in.

I had eggs Benedict (ham)and my wife had eggs royale(smoked salmon). The poached eggs were the best I've ever tasted. Perfectly cooked!!! Service was excellent, and we were asked several times if we needed anything. I would recommend this tearoom to everyone that I love!!

I came for brunch with my husband and father in law. The waitress who took our order was lovely and very efficient. I had the breakfast pancakes and they both had the mega breakfast. Couldn’t believe how quick the food came out and everything was absolutely amazing!! The pancakes were the best I’ve ever had. Nice atmosphere and the service was brilliant. Can’t wait to come back again

We stopped here for lunch after spending a long time deciding where to go and we were fairly happy with our decision. The service was very quick despite being a busy lunchtime and both dishes were delicious. The Nutella pancakes were fresh and fluffy (they did not come with whipped cream but the staff were quick to help when I asked for some). Unfortunately, there were a few downsides to our visit. The seating is quite limited and we were placed next to the main door, which was not ideal. There was also no cutlery and napkins on the table when our lunch arrived. Finally, the chai latte was too sweet and milky, without much chai flavour. However, overall, we enjoyed our meal and believe Treats offers good value for money.

I visited with my wife on a weekend break for our wedding anniversary. We had been wanting to try this place but didn't realise it was upstairs and my wife uses a walking stick, so this wasn't ideal. The food was ok... My pancakes were good with bacon and maple syrup but my wife wasn't too keen on her vegetarian breakfast. She did not like the sausage and left most of her food. Overall it is not a bad place to visit but the stair access to the building isn't ideal for disabled customers.

This place was recommended to me by a Durham University student as I probably would never have found it myself. Great advice! After climbing a dozen steps you are entering a large but still cozy room with well-arranged tables. However, by far the biggest advantage...

Absolutely terrific breakfast, a family of four dined well here. The negatives are that you can’t book, we arrived at 09:15 (Sunday) and it was almost full. Also if you are sat near the door on a cold autumn or winters day, get used to either getting up and shutting the door or shouting ‘can you shut the door please’ at customers entering or leaving. Genuinely incredible that so many people drift through a door without checking whether it is shutting. We were freezing! Please invest in some door closers! I’m not picking though, the food and service are superb. We had a pancake stack (delicious), avo poached eggs and chilli (ace), two poached eggs on toast (demolished) and a toasted tea cake for the tiny fella. All were served with a smile. All were very very nice. So nice I forgot to take a photo!

Great food and very friendly staff. The only down side is that it can be a nightmare to park when it is very busy.

First time there. Went for Sunday lunch with family. A good selection of meat but the beef was especially delicious, very large portions. Plenty of veg, roast potatoes were really good. We asked for more gravy and the staff were happy to oblige. All in all a lovely meal.

I base my review on a blueberry and almond slice and a Cappuccino, costing £6.20 Cappuccino was too milky & the cake slice was nice. The highlight was seeing the goats. 🐐
