Town Crier in Chelmsford

Hired their function room and was such a good decision. We was able to arrange buffet food and use their music surround system for a playlist and their tv for a sideshow of photos. They put signs up for us to advise it's a private function so no one came in and we was allowed the room for as long as we wanted for such a reasonable price. Would definitely use again!

Always a lovely experience when we come here, the food is amazing and the staff are great always friendly and smiling, Wayne goes out of his way every time we have been here to make sure everything is ok, the kids love the food from here too, will always come here as my first choice to eat. It’s lovely and clean. Thankyou for always making our visits great Wayne 😊

Very noisy with music and tv sports plus a noisy group of customers we couldn't have a conversation as it was so loud but the food was worth the very long wait

Been here before and food was terrible, dry, overcooked, burnt, cold and not very appetising. A year later we thought we’d give it a chance and see if it had improved. Unfortunately or fortunately we didn’t get to find out. Service is absolutely abysmal. Booked a table online, no problem. When we arrived, went to the bar and asked where our table was. Advised that the waitress puts names on reserved tables and had to find it ourselves. Name not on any table, obviously. Stood around in dining area waiting for service or help but nothing. Chef saw us from kitchen and so did gormless waiter but not one of them came out to ask why we were waiting for a table or not being served. Rude. Actually funny that a table for 6 was reserved in the name of lesa, if that’s a name and reckoned it was for us, even though that’s not close, morons. No surprise, we left and won’t return. How on earth does your business function? The brewery needs to know. All that will happen is the manager will say to contact him etc to discuss it further. Nothing needs to be discussed further, my review stands. I look forward to your generic response

No mushroom chilli so had to go for Katsu Curry which was nice a little salty but edible. Was very quiet when we were there for a lunch time but OK.

Sorry only went past it all looks clean and tidy Maybe 1 day

Background music would be a great addition to this place as you can often only here the clink of glasses and the sports/news channel.... More publicity and live acts or fun events, regular family quiz nights etc would be beneficial too! Let's liven it up a bit and create a more fun and inviting atmosphere!

Second time in a row been here for food and quite frankly its horrific. Last time had Hunters chicken and it was obvious it was microwave reheated as it was hard and couldnt chew it. This time went for lunch and got Steak Panini and it was not eatable. You couldnt even bite through it let alone chew it. Wont be back and its a shame as only pub in town to eat but needs new owners for me to even contemplate it again. Used to be ok and kids love it but food is so bad go somewhere else.

Come here regularly and the staff and atmosphere are spot on. Staff are friendly and attentive and very quick service. Thank you team!

We booked a meal for New Year's Eve late in the day. Food and service were first rate. Wonderful with our dog too!

Went for Xmas dinner with our family. Great service, food was amazing plenty of it too, staff all attentive and friendly, lovely atmosphere, relaxed and over all an amazing experience. Thank you to all the staff.

Popped in for a meal with family after the light switch on, the pub must be doing something right as they were packed! And yet service was still speedy, the manager was friendly and staff were all on top form, food was very nice and great value with 2 meals at £13.49! The size of the Katsu curry was amazing value! One of my childrens fave! And it was cooked beautifully. Well done chef! All in all, lovely pub in a great location with good staff and a manager who knows what he is doing! Will be back again soon!

It would help having your staff being over the age of 18 to serve alcohol. Twice I went to the bar to be told I could not be served as there was no one about over the age of 18 to authorise the sale. Manager spent most of their time on cigarette breaks outside. So I left and went elsewhere

Had one of the worst meals I have ever had . Waited 2 hrs for a meal that was so poor . Used to go here regularly but that was the last time . Found the staff to be really rude when we complained about the food

Stopped by the Town Crier for a roast. Wayne who served us was very friendly and helpful as my partner wanted to watch a football match on tv so he checked to see if it was being televised. Our roast was really nice. There was plenty of beef and turkey. The vegetables were firm, not soggy. You could add more roast potatoes and yorkies if you wanted. Overall the meal and pub are great value. £13 for a roast. Excellent value.

Amazing, absolutely amazing. This is my first time traveling to the UK coming all the way from the United States. This has by far been the best place I’ve visited not just for food or drink, but the staff have treated me out of this world. Very accommodating and helpful for slight cultural differences from America, Nicki especially is such a wonderful person making it feel just like home here. The food tasted great, the English beers and ciders I’ve tried are wonderful and leaving me to always want more. But like I said, every single staff and management member here have been amazing. Highly recommend coming here and can’t wait to come back again to The Town Crier!

Came in with my grandsons and had a lovely lunch. Nothing was too much for Wayne the food was amazing and the boys enjoyed their icecreams

I was met with friendly and helpful service from Zoe and Mollie at the bar and they were very accommodating to our needs. Going above and beyond to provide a great service. We were told when ordering that the mixed grills were off again (our third visit in a row) which was disappointing. It’s a shame on our other visits to this pub that the rest of the staff are unwelcoming and rude and seem to never smile as we were looking forward to coming here again. I’m never coming here again that’s for sure

Went for a family meal. Lovely lady behind the bar called Molly. So helpful when my little girl wanted to order her own food, she didnt rush her. Kids meals are good. A meal deal of a main, drink and desert for a fixed price. 3 of our meals were enjoyed, unfortunately one of the meals was not as the chicken was so hard to cut as it was so dry. However this was quickly rectified and apologies were made. Would definitely visit again for the friendly staff and the nice atmosphere

My partner and son both had cheesecand bacon burgers, I had the southern fried chicken burger. Portions were generous, food delicious, staff really friendly. Then we went out to the pool table for a few games. Will definitely eat here again.

Really lovely pub, manager was very helpful. Lots of people on a Friday night but speed of service was still good. Has a varied menu so had lots to choose from. Food reaĺly tasty.

Such a welcoming pub! Went here with my family and had lots of choices within a good price range! Little lady said it was the nicest dinner ever!

This place has nice big televisions, perfect for watching sport, and a pool table. (£1.50 PER GAME!!) They also offer decent meals for an average price, but the drinks are too expensive! Also the staff are sitting around talking to each other when they did not clean the toilets.

Went for a meal as a family. The pub looks so lovely,the staff was very polite and helpful. The food was delicious and felt value for money. We went there before when we visited a nearby farm and I can say something changed in good there. Well done and thank you for a nice meal with the children!

Good range of food if the kitchen is open service at the till no problem plenty of tables good parking.

Staff really trying their best to accommodate but a shame really, 6 items available on the menu which were short on portions, dirty glasses, management didn't appear bothered, pool table not working dirty toilets, disappointing.

Food was absolutely awful and we certainly wont be eating here again We complained to the waitress who brought us some more mash potato which wasn't much better, chicken was tough peas hard

Love this pub restaurant, over my 2 recent visits, they serve the best cooked food I’ve had for a long while. All the staff are friendly and give good customer service, the chef is excellent and I didn’t have to wait long at all for my dinner. And the desert was great too. Highly recommended.

Popped in as we were in the area, it was a pleasant surprise, cosy and clean. The staff were helpful and friendly. We had nachos and chicken wings. Both were delicious, compliments to the chef. Thank you, I would recommend.

Normally love this pub, but very disappointed when arriving on a Thursday for musical bingo (which has several posters advertising and we even called to confirm!!) to find that it wasn’t even running. May as well take the posters down! And not one ale on tap!!!

Pleasant but I feel the menu could be a bit more varied. Would like a few more things added.

First time visit & was impressed when i walked in I've passed it many times but never been inside..we took a cake with us for my daughter-in-laws birthday & asked for it to be brought out while we had deserts but it didn't hsppen so i had to go & ask for the third time & then they were runninh around saying we can't find the cake 😒 so that ruined the surprise & then they said found it & just brought it out in the bag i gave it to them in with no candles lit on it..she apologised & then took it back to the kitchen & came back out with it so we could sing Happy birthday but by that time it was too late the surprise had gone..& the ladies toilets were disgraceful dirty loo's used toilet paper left on the floors no toilet paper in the machine for my granddaughter to use so I'm afraid it's put me off going in there again.

We have visited many times, food and drink good value. We like the food offered and it's quality. Staff have been helpful and keep the place clean. No doubt we will continue to eat here. Having a free car park for 3 hours is a bonus.

Have been on previous occasions and it was ok. This time very limited selection of drinks, no ales on tap, and very limited food choices. Even when we did place an order the kitchen staff came and told us they didn't have our choice and we had to re order.

Not our first visit to the Town Crier, as it's a regular place to stop after a visit to Asda! However, it's the first time we've felt we should acknowledge the hard work etc. that Nicki and her team put in to running the pub...

I love this pub. The staff, the food, the beer, everything. I had my birthday party in The Crier on 3rd December and we had food. Ample food and incredible warmth from Nicky, Sophie, the other Nicky and the ladies on the bar. The food was excellent value for money. I write this review as I wait for my mixed grill, which I know the chef will have cooked brilliantly for us, hoping for 2 things. 1. Credit where credit is due from Greene King to their staff. They need more praise than they get. 2. A special card for unlimited pints of rocking Rudolph in the month of December. (Surely, not a lot to ask!) You can’t go wrong at the Crier. My home from home. Is 7 stars an option?

Just had a very pleasant lunch. Food hot, tasty and plentiful. Staff very attentive, friendly and accomodating for us, our toddler granddaughter and our border collie.

Not very good !! one good Sunday lunch , next week bad tasting turkey , made staff aware I did not seem to care I work very hard for my money. I have no problem paying for good food. However, when you’re presented with bad tasting food and no resolve I would not be recommended

I really enjoy attending Green King establishments. It disappoints me that their didn’t seem to be very many choices for gluten free. On the website at Brandies Covent Garden. it said the gluten green option was soup that could come with a seeded gluten free roll. When the soup arrived there was no roll. When we enquired we’re told the website was incorrect. In this day and age it really isn’t difficult to have some gluten free foods in. A freezer and get them out as ordered. The same as when the website offered new potatoes as an option to chips as they are cooked in oil not kept separately from gluten containing foods. But new potatoes are never available: It becoming so tiresome to battle to find something that we can eat. Makes you just want to stay home and not bother: With a few simple tweaks the menus could be made far more inclusive.

Have popped in quite a few times. Beer is always good and the food is simple but tasty. Burgers and buffalo cauliflower are our favourites. The vegetarian mushroom pie is worth a try as well. Will be back again
