Tough Mary's Bakehouse in Nottingham

I’m a regular customer, even though my husband no longer wants to visit because of the service before. This morning, I had an almond croissant that was excessively heavy and very oily, making me seriously question the quality. The explanation I received felt inadequate—whatever happens during baking should be controlled before presenting the product to customers. Unfortunately, I ended up paying for this failure, even leaving a tip. There are only a couple of reasonable bakeries in town, leaving me no choice. Life is difficult!

Love this bakery, had a focaccia and Copenhagen and they were absolutely delicious! My mom is very picky but she loved the Copenhagen so much she rated it a 9/10! Focaccia was the size of my head and great price/flavour! Definitely worth a visit and staff are super friendly! Also has a seating area!

The first bakery I popped into in Nottingham, and I absolutely fell head over heels for the delicious food. The queue snaking out the door told me this place was worth a punt—and, blimey, it didn't disappoint. As soon as I stepped inside, the smell of freshly baked bread and pastries hit me like a ton of bricks. The staff were fiendly, and the atmosphere was cosy. If I'm being honest, I was tempted to scoff the lot. In the end, my mate and I went for a cheese croissant, a Marmite, Parmesan, and chive swirl, and a Danish puff with caramelised nuts and banana slices, topped with lavender sprinkles (or so I reckon). The sweet and savoury combo was spot on, and I craved more. I'll definitely pop back if I'm in the area again.

After having breakfast at Tough Mary’s Bakehouse yesterday we simply had to go back again today. The coffee was great, the breads and danishes amazing! Using organic flour and traditional long proving methods to produce the beautiful sourdough loaves, the results are fantastic. I tried the 100% rye sourdough, which is tricky to make, and just loved it. We also tried several of the Danishes, both savoury and sweet and found them to be exceptional. I cannot recommend ‘that yellow bakehouse half way up Derby Street’ Tough Mary’s Bakehouse, highly enough. Get in early though as some items do sell out early. We will certainly be back for more:)

Stumbled across Tough Mary's while out and about in Nottingham. A great little bakery just outside the centre. The almond croissants were delicious, and the hot chocolates were amazing too. We also bought a sourdough bread to take home. Thank you!

Great food - give the soup a try! Would be 5 stars if it weren’t for the snooty “we’re great and we know it” attitude of the staff.

We had a poor experience. We ordered a pizza, which was freezing cold, I asked for it to be heated and was told no. The chairs outside were very uncomfortable outside, the barriers weren’t tied down so they were clanging and banging which was really disruptive to our time. Oh and the ‘loose leaf tea’ wasn’t loose. It was in a teabag?? Wouldn’t recommend.

This was my first trip and I bought a dulce de leche rice pudding filled doughnut and a cheese scone. The scone was soft on the inside and hard on the outside even after keeping it in the fridge overnight. The doughnut filling was delicious and not overly sweet. The lady serving me was friendly and made me feel welcomed. Definitely coming back for the sandwiches! 😌

The best bakery in Nottingham without a doubt! 🍒 🥐 The baked goods here are unmatched, so so fresh and taste delicious. As a gym goer this is the ONLY place that Im tempted by.. mostly because of how delicious they taste and the fresh ingredients used! The coffee btw genuinely best Ive tasted and Ive tasted a few! Also let me finish by saying the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The lady at the back sees me and always welcomes me with a smile and has my scone ready before Ive even hit checkout! Thank you guys for the best experiences every time I visit.

since moving to nottingham tough marys has become a staple for their delicious baked goods - try the cinammon croissant monster or the pain au chocolat!

Exactly how a bakehouse cafe should be. The only problem is that there are many options and you can't try everything. The coffee was amazing too.

Known about it for a long time but had never visited, so, remedied that today. Raspberry doughnuts are packed with jam and the cinnamon rolls are beautiful. Absolutely try them and you can sit in with a coffee and enjoy the lively bakery smells.

Been here on several occasions and generally it is quite busy and you will find people queuing up and that's for a good reason. One down fall which I found more recently for Muslims is that the bakery for is that they use alcohol as an ingredient for many of their pastries.

Avoid. Food took over 45 minutes after being told 15-20mins max. It came over cooked, burnt toast, burnt bacon. Egg and beans on toast came on 1 slide of burnt toast £6.40.

I can't single out one particular item to recommend because everything I've tried here has been exceptional! From the delicious coffee to the superb baked goods, everything is top-notch. Plus, there's a small window where you can peek at the bakers while they work their magic <3

Food is delicious. Service is cold / standoffish (no hi / thank you or acknowledgement when paid!). Also the food is placed right up to the edge of the counter in front of the serving staff so close that their sleeves were constantly dragging across the pastries which was pretty off putting. I’d visit again if I was passing as the food is that good, just be prepared to feel unwelcome!!

Great bread, cakes and pastries, and friendly staff. I love popping in, and the bright yellow shop front (and continuing yellow theme inside) is a sunny delight.

Had a lovely Saturday morning walk and saw a queue outside this bakery which must mean it’s good! When I got inside there were so many options to choose from (pastries, cakes, bread etc.) I was spoilt for choice but I went with the chocolate brownie and raspberry cheesecake babka. They were delicious, I can’t stop thinking about them! Really friendly staff and the cutest bakery. Highly recommend

Frittata was delicious, sandwich was delicious, Guinness chocolate cake probably the best cake I’ve ever had, Banana bread fantastic. Coffee also amazing, leaves a caramel aftertaste. I can’t recommend this place enough. It’s an absolute must If you ever visit Nottingham.

I don’t usually leave reviews but I felt like I had to. The pastries are immaculate, we had the Danish and the Copenhagen. The Danish was flakey, topped with pistachio and the nicest blood orange, the flavour was just top tier and a must try. The Copenhagen was super fluffy and just a delight, it had a slight tang from the rhubarb jam (I think it was) that counteracted the sweetness which thankfully was not over the top. We also had a tomato (among other ingredients) soup and a grilled cheese, both were excellent although at 7.50 each the grilled cheese left a bit to be desired flavour wise but I dipped it in the soup and it makes for an excellent combo. Perhaps something for tough Mary’s to think about making deal where you can upgrade the slices of sour dough for a grilled cheese at a reduced cost for the two. I’m not a massive hot drinks person so I don’t think I can provide great insight into what constitutes a great one other than the fact the hot chocolate I had was delicious. I absolutely love to see places like this thrive and it deserves to, definitely a place I’d find myself going back to so that I could work my way through the menu.

Came for the sourdough, stayed for the pastries, will be surely coming back next weekend.

We recently moved a short walk away and luckily found this place. It is amazing, and possibly the best bakery I’ve ever been in. The vegan mozzarella sandwich is delicious as is the sourdough, doughnuts and to be honest every other thing I have bought. You won’t regret a visit.

Suffering from it's own success. Have yet to try a sandwich, they are never in stock. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a bakery to still have some in at 12. Found some of the staff standoffish.

I have been buying my sourdough bread at Tough Mary since they opened. The variety is fantastic especially the full of flavour baguettes, crunchy on the crust and soft inside. Probably best in the Midlands. The croissants are a treat and the range of savoury bites excellent. Luckily I live 15 minutes walk away. Wishing them all a great future

Was just strolling past and we wanted a coffee however as soon as we saw all the baked goods we couldn’t resist…we had the cheese chive and mustard scones for lunch and then took some ham and cheese crossaints and warming cheese biscuits home too! Fantastic food, definitely be back again!!

We stopped here for some traditional breads and sweets. They have a wide selection of sourdoughs and other traditional breads as well as a nice selection of croissants and pastries. The country sourdough loaf had excellent crumb and finish and a mild taste. The pastries were nicely seasoned but had a nice balance of seasoning to bread taste.

Wonderful place to visit for breakfast, brunch or lunch. The display of sweet and savoury bakes is outstanding - and they all tasted as good as they look. Something for everyone, with vegans well catered for. Get some bread to take home whilst you're there - it's delicious too.

Passing through Nottingham and got a selection of sandwiches for myself and my colleagues. The miso Brussels sprout sandwich was the stand out, followed closely by the whipped Stilton and roasted veg, so so delicious. I also got the banana bread which was absolutely perfect, nice and moist without being too dense!

Got the most insane sandwich on my walk to Wollaton Hall and i'm surprised i didn't eat it before i got there it looked so good! Great location, in the city but not too busy near by. Staff are really friendly, sandwich was so good we went on the way back to get my friend one too!

Wowzers!! I popped in here to see what was on offer for lunch. I spoke to a really friendly, helpful member of staff and opted for a miso sprout sandwich and a choccy brownie! It was the BEST sandwich I’ve ever eaten! St the time of writing this, I’ve not eaten the brownie but I doubt I’ll be disappointed. I’ll be back here again snd will definitely recommend to friends.

Incredibly busy but this demonstrates how brilliant it is! Love the bustle and the service is lovely and friendly so I didn't mind waiting a bit. I had a Copenhagen and a flat white. The bake was simply perfect and my coffee was spot on! 👌

Good bakery with good prices. It is not apen all the times but they taste of bread is good. Been going back to the bakery for quite some time now and they have improved much since my last review. Products are much more consistent.

Can't fault the bakes but customer service needs working on. Waiting for my coffee the slip had to be waved under the nose of the girl making the coffees to stop her talking to her friend (another customer). 🙄

Though Mary’s offers a great range of savoury and sweet pastries. Alongside sandwiches and loaves which are freshly baked daily with a good range of vegetarian and vegan options too. They do coffees with milk alternatives that they do not charge extra for, which is a bonus! The staff are friendly and chatty every time that I come in, I’ve never had a bad experience.

Food is great. Staff were completely disinterested in helping, had to ask for glasses with drinks etc. Tables were filthy, despite going during a quiet period. The counter was disgusting, entrance covered in debris - almost didn't buy anything because the place was so grimy.

Our favourite bakery in Nottingham! Always have amazing food! Sandwiches on focaccia always with great veggie and non-veggie options, plus so many good sweet pastries. Vegan pecan swirl has to be a favourite. Come here most weekends I can 😂

The black hair lady apparently seems having some problems with Asian people (not only from me but my Asian friends). Don’t know why she can work there for such a long time. Would be a five star without her weird and condescending attitude. All the rest - especially sandwiches and salads - a fantastic 20/10.

Went for a coffee today, wish I hadn’t bothered! Staff looked really annoyed we had walked in, they started clearing all the table around us, stacking chairs on the tables whilst we were drinking, it was only 2.30pm at this point, felt very uncomfortable so quickly had our drinks and left. Perhaps close earlier in future and clear up after, it’s just rude!

I walk past Tough Mary's at least twice daily. In most instances, tables are full. On the weekends, there is a queue out the door. I was pretty excited to try their food. It was okay. No complaints but I also felt like I got equally good baked items from M&S Food.

The cheese scones are INCREDIBLE

UPD: recently i've felt that some of the staff have an attitude... I see there is a lot of demand but coming to the bakery is a little special moment and some friendliness would add a lot to it. excellent pastries, my favorite place in Nottingham cooffe is okay and they have quite limited opening hours... but all these foes not matter when u get to that hazelnut pain au choc or anything else really

Last 2 visits I've seen dogs allowed inside the shop, wagging around, touching furniture with poohy paws, sneezing and fur in the air.... DISGUSTING!!!!!! From being a weekly regular, I will never return as this is unacceptable for a uncovered food/bakery establishment, so unhygienic in my opinion!!!

Très très bonne boulangerie ! Les croissants et pains et chocolats sont très bons. Le "cinnamon monster" est délicieux. Un bonheur de trouver du bon pain également ! Et un grand bravo pour les délicieux sandwichs qui sont différents chaque semaine et qui sont réellement excellents. Un de mes endroits favoris à Nottingham !

The milk in my Coffee was burnt cup ripped on me, croissant and cheesecake were just ok and overpriced and the staff seemed reluctant to have us. Shame due to the reputation of this place

Best French style pastries in town

Amazing bread, really nice but THE WORST chai latte I have ever had. Tasted like water mixed with cinnamon. Didn’t manage to finish the drink and I’m not picky normally, but this was ridiculous. £3 or something around that for an awful drink. Bread is always nice tho, but probably won’t be returning as I’d like a good good drink with my lunch. Maybe some barista training would be appropriate. All in all disappointed. Hipster service but still nice.

The worst service ever! I had made an order for Christmas well in advance, went to pick it up and found out that my order had been given away!!! I am speechless. Never buying from them again

This is hands down the best bakery in Notts! And the people are just fab! Always welcoming and helpful. My faves are the doughnuts obviously and Guinness cake when it's available!!! I just got two slices today. I think I've only had one item that I didn't fancy only because I'm a bit picky when it comes to cake and the denseness.

I love this bakery. The pastries are so crisp and delicious. There's so many choose from, including some classics and a few quirky little gems. The staff are so lovely and happy to recommend any of the pastries. On my last visit I got the Coppenhagen, which I absolutely loved. It had a lovely, sweet plum jam filling and the pastry was light and airy. Such a great little brunch treat. The coffee is also fab and they offer a choice of different milks. I've only ever visited for breakfast/brunch pastries but would love to try a sandwich or the focaccia. There is a small seating area inside and outside, usually with a free table, but it can get busy at the weekend.

The baked goods are top drawer and decent coffee too - well worth the short walk out of the city centre
