Torbay of Hythe in Shepway

Gave it a try there was few people sat in the restaurant bizzarly as I was eating my dessert I was the only person sat in the restaurant on a Saturday afternoon 🤔 nice menu gives you a brief history of the restaurant I ordered haddock with chips and curry sauce the fish was good but still can't get over a restaurant charging £2.90 for a can of Fanta way too much I finished with a banana split 🍌 it was nice and a good coffee ☕

Been here before always get good meal for the price and freshly cooked too Quickly seated and served less than 10 minutes had our meals fish and chips, chicken and mushroom pie with chips Very tasty well cooked

Very disappointing and poor. The fish was thin and flaccid - not at all like the proper cod we're used to - the batter was strangely cardboard-like and the chips were a mixture of good chips and a lot of very small hard chips and bits - and they had obviously been kept warm for some time and were far from fresh. It was a mistake to try Torbay again after we were disappointed 6 months ago. There are far better suppliers within a 5 mile radius.

We stopped off for fish and chips on our way home from a long journey. We ordered food to take away and then went and sat by the canal to eat the meal. The food was very nice, the problem we had was it not being packaged very well at all which made it very difficult. we had 2 haddock & chips and one sausage and chips between 3 of us. The 2 fish were in one box, everything else was in flimsy paper bags! We had to rip the box in half to try and use as 'plates'. Every other fish and chip take away I have ever bought puts the fish/sausage and chips in its own box (way back, it would be wrapped in paper in the 'meals') so people could easily eat. If you plan on eating your meal on the beach, by the canal etc you will need to make this very clear to the staff and ask for each meal to be in its own box.

We went on a Friday evening and the place was quite busy with both diners and takeaway orders. The chips were O.K. but nothing special, whereas the fish was of high quality and beautifully cooked in a light batter - the best we have come across in some time. (We had plaice and cod.) For dessert, we had the peach melba and pineapple fritters; the latter tasted just as good as when Blake used to enjoy them at school some decades ago! The staff were efficient, helpful and pleasant and we recommend the place for a good meal at a reasonable price.

A warm friendly welcome, a bright, very clean restaurant and excellent fish. What more can you ask. The staff were quick, friendly and helpful. The food was very good. Especially the Haddock which was cooked to perfection, with a beautiful, light, crisp batter. Recommended.

The best fish and chips - freshly cooked, lovely batter, fresh moist fish, great chips. From the outside just a fish and chip shop, but the staff are attentive, cheerful and the food is superb. Cup of tea good too.

After going to Torbay’s for over 30 years this was the worse fish and chips we have ever had. The cod did not look nor taste like cod (in fact it tasted very salty). The batter was soggy. In fact it looked more like a schnitzel that cod and chips. Will not be going back. Very sad to see it go downhill.

Lovely staff, friendly and helpful, even though we went in for only one child’s portion of fish fingers and chips costing £4. We discovered 3 small fish in the take away bag, plus and enormous quantity of chips. Well done - we will be back!

Have been here few times before when I visit family in Sandgate last time was earlier in the year always had excellent food and experience finished with nice glass of wine. Arrived today early evening there were ppl waiting outside for their orders good start we though but went inside it was dead only 2 ppl in there we chose a table but found it hadn’t been wiped the whole place looked shabby and disheveled. They had no cod so we had the haddock (skin still on yuk) chips tasted reheated mushy peas were nice. We overheard one of the girls spk to two customers who just came in that the new owners have cut the staffing levels and there struggling especially as there doing take always as well. The food overall not as good but more noticeable is the overall experience untidy short staff no longer serving wine it’s clear this place has changed hands such a shame. From what we observed the new owners it wouldn’t surprise me in time it will be more geared towards fast food takeaway kebabs burgers etc and fish n chips be more secondary Sorry but not worth the drive to come here anymore

Having regularly used Torbay for over 20 years, we were very disappointed to find that many of the recent poor reviews, since new ownership, are fully justified. Not sure what has been changed, but the fish was soggy and tasteless, and the chips were hard and barely warm. We were left with an unpleasant 'lardy' after-taste. Such a shame. I do hope that the new owners can respond to feedback and restore the quality of their offering before it is too late. It gives no pleasure to leave such negative and discouraging reviews. We will not be returning until we have some reassurances.

I was visiting Hythe and fancied Fish and Chips for lunch. I ordered Medium Cod and Chips to take away for a cost of £9.70 which is very reasonable bearing in mind I have been charged £11 and over in other establishments. Both the cod and chips were cooked to order so there was a ten minute wait for my food but it was worth the wait to have piping hot fish and chips served to me. The man serving behind the counter was very pleasant and professional. I took my fish and chips and sat on a bench by the canal to enjoy them. I wholeheartedly recommend this chip shop and will visit again when I am in the area.

The sad demise of a once iconic fish and chip shop. For many, many years every few weeks we have enjoyed a superb freshly cooked fish and chip supper with a couple of glasses of wine. Recently, when the building’s owners took over and introduced themselves to us, they assured us that the service and quality would not change. A few weeks after this when we visited again, the place was in total chaos. Dirty, uncleared tables and a very stressed front of house young lady on her own with what appeared to be arguments going on between the cooks behind the counter. The young lady explained that these cooks had just taken over so everything was a bit strange, and the food and service were certainly not up to standard. This week we decided to give the new regime another chance and, once again, we were appalled by the chaotic scenes in the restaurant. Looking at the new menu we saw that no wines were now being advertised. When we enquired we were told that alcohol was no longer being served, so we left. As we were leaving we were very glad that we didn’t stay for a meal, the hot cabinet was piled up with fish cooked up front and curling up under the heat lamps. How sad that a business, which prided itself on providing fresh cooked fish and chips could go this way, and like us, upset so many of it’s regular customers. The new owners will soon realise how many regulars they have upset when the tourists have gone home and business relies on regular customers such as ourselves. A longer journey to The Pilot at Dungeness will now be providing us with our fish and chip suppers and a glass or two of wine. Shame! shame! shame!

Was pleased that I found a table and was able to sit in to eat. Cod and chips were very nice, and the portion was large. I wasn't able to finish it. Served by a pleasant young lady. My experience of the food and service was very good.

Fancied some chips, so visited this fish and chip shop, was rather surprised the response a customer received because she arrived 8 minutes early to collect the order she phone in!! They were very short with her, she was not rude or anything. Chips arrived, they were OK. Nothing to right home about, unfortunately. Staff need to think about what they say and facial expressions when customers are there.

Have been using the Torbay for at least the last 20 years and always had superb fish and chips. The business has recently changed hands and oh what a difference. Poor service and chips swimming in fat, fish portions now smaller but still the same price. We will not be coming back here again as very disappointed and not worth it.

The Torbay of Hythe is absolutely amazing. The food is great, the service is amazing. Bob and Kay are so welcoming and so are their staff. Under busy circumstances they still pull off a great service. The fish is beautifully cooked. Everything is cooked fresh from the moment you place your order. Best fish and chips!

Really disappointed with this restaurant.. the waitresses were stressed and confused and made open comments on how difficult it was to do 2 orders.. for 2 tables! They couldn’t manage the orders correctly either. The food took ages to come and while the portions were huge, it all tasted of lard and has left a horrible taste in all our mouths. Wasn’t pleasant watching other tables complaining about the length of time it took to cook the food and on leaving, people were outside commenting on the length of time for a take away and the obvious smell of lard. The freshly cooked food looked awful and shrivelled in the cabinet which is off putting.

Had heard mixed reviews since Torbay changed hands so thought the only fair thing to do is try it ourselves. We wish we hadn't bothered! Ordered and collected take aways for the family. The only positive thing I can say is that the portions are generous. however generous portions just meant there was more to throw away! The food was extremely greasy, the predominant taste was grease/fat and none of it tasted particularly fresh. We had a variety of meals and none of us enjoyed what little we consumed before consigning it to the bin. We certainly won't be ordering from Torbay again.

Just moved to this area and been trying out all the local fish & chip shops. Good point about Torbay fish & chips is the cod was beautiful. Bad point is that the chips were like chewing on leather. We will give them another go soon and hopefully get some lovely chips to go with their lovely cod. I think the chips were reheated as it was just before 5pm on a Friday

I was using another chippy in Hythe, but the quality went down also very slow service, and they only take cash, so decided to try the Torbay, the service was great well organised, the fish is always cooked fresh and pay by card!Well worth the trip

Food was utterly dreadful, white bate hollow, calamari only cooked on one side, oysters unshucked. shocking service, no hot water in toilets. When I looked through the port holes to the kitchen it all became clear.....AVOID!

Usually we sing the praises of the Torbay. Great fish and good chips. Our experience in August was mixed with one of the pieces of fish being dry and not at all succulent. We’ll keep going there to make sure that they regain their status of preferred fish and chip takeaway in Hythe.

We were staying in Hythe for a few days so decided to have fish & chips one night we didn’t want to sit inside as it was a lovely evening so we had a take out the service was ok although didn’t actually see many wearing masks & seemed bit slow as was not busy the chips were good & the fish was very tasty but disappointed in the batter as was a bit soggy not crispy at all which is how we like it

The food was nice and fresh and worth the wait (there was a queue to order and then another one to collect the food). If you can, order in advance and then just collect. I would have loved to give a higher rating but the service let it down. The server was rude and disrespectful and in need of customer service training.

Popped in here Sunday lunch time. Finding somewhere to eat hot food that time of day is not easy in Hythe. The Cod was the best I have tasted. You can eat in. Alcoholic drinks are available.

I try and visit the seaside as many times as I can every year. I ask the local people which fish and chips shop they recommend. One lady recommended this one and I visited it. They were busy but we were seated within 10 minutes, We visited at a but time on a SaturdayThe restaurant is really nice, tables are cleaned after each customer and it is very clean inside.You normally get precooked fish and chips but at this one, it was freshly cooked (maybe I got lucky with a fresh batch) but I think they cook to order. There was a 10 minute wait for the food to be served but It was piping hot when it arrived at the table and cooked just the way I like it. The picture shows a small fish and chips which is more than adequate for me but normal size portions are available!I would highly recommend this place.

Well tea which we asked for very strong was truly dreadful and undrinkable asked for a coke but never arrived but asked to pay for. Whenever we are at Sandgate we always try to fit in a trip to Torbay. This is a very busy fish and chip restaurant and takeaway. We sat in. I chose haddock and chips and a mug of coffee. My husband chose deep fried mushrooms, cod and chips and a soft drink. Food was lovely, hot and fresh. The coffee tasted like horrid instant so I’ll stick to my usual mug of tea next time. As we went during the August on a Monday it cost us just over £13. The staff were efficient and mindful of cleaning tables etc. So all good.

Whenever we find ourselves in Folkestone or Hythe we always visit this fish restaurant. The quality of the fish is excellent, always well cooked, with very generous portions. The staff , although young , are friendly and knowledgeable. The only drawback is that there are a limited number of tables so best get there early.

We always get our fish and chips from here, we travel from Maidstone about 40 miles the fish is so fresh with hot soft batter and the chips taste lovely. Really friendly manager who has the place set up COVID friendly

Drove down to Hythe from London, our first trip out for months and just had to have fish and chips somewhere. So glad we chose this place . The cod and chips was absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful white flaky fish with no skin , just how we like it , lovely crispy batter . Perfect chips to go with it . We had medium size cod , just right for us . Tea was really nice too . Reasonably priced and efficient service . We have had fish and chips in plenty of different places and this rates at the very top .

I love going to Torbay of Hythe because I think the chips are quite nice but the staff could be a bit more polite than just saying what would you like, money please, here you go. My older brother has also has very bad experiences in Torbay. Would have been higher rated but just please let the staff be more kind. Also would recommend Park road more because the staff are generally nicer in there and the fish is slot nicer.

Order by phone, went to pick up on time given, arrived to total chaos queue of people not knowing what to do and not or socially distancing and blocking the entrance, finally got in to pick up order, was told it was being done and to wait inside, waited 20 mins while waiting observed staff were not following COVID guidance, all staff members all next to each other, no PPE of any sort used or screen by the till, staff continually talking while packing food without protection on their mouths, Owner needs to take COVID precautions seriously to protect staff & customers

Decided on a very late lunch, after myself and a colleague discovered this place to be open. Takeaway only, for very obvious reasons.All food was well-packaged, and service was good. The fish here is excellent, the staff are always attentive there seems to be a wait for a table which speaks volumes itself. Very good and good value for money.
