Tongs Fish and Chip Shop in Wiltshire

Visited again last night, (Friday 8th March 2024). Tongs has been in Corsham for yonks, providing absolutely superb fish and chips. I get saddened when I see reviews about soggy chips. Tongs chips are exactly what you should get in a decent fish and chip shop. Not crunchy but softish and bursting with flavour.

Beautifully cooked cod and chips at a good price and in recyclable packaging. Large portion and the fish was delicious. Easy to pull up outside for the take away. Sorry, photo is of an empty box as only decided to review once we had gobbled it all up!

It was my second visit, the first time my son-in-law brought some back to my house in Marshfield , they were awful but I thought maybe it was the distance they had come before we ate them that made them not at their best. I just ordered cod , curry sauce and chips to takeaway.

Up until last night, we've been coming in for our regular fish 🐟 and chips ("Tong", Corsham, Wiltshire) and been very pleased with their takeaways. But last night, staff all looked and seemed miserable and by the time we brought it home it was v greasy, sausage was horrible, fish and chips not as good as they usually are, but it was also cold!!!

Dreadful food serviced today. The fish was fine, however, the chips were inedible cold and rotten!! They should have been thrown out at the shop, not served to.regular customers.

I can't believe that our favourite fish and chips takeaway (Tongs fish and chips on 1 High St. Corsham) are rated at only 3 & half stars and not 4 & half or the total of 5 stars!

As i stepped into the chip, i was wofted by the beatiful great brittish smell of salt and vinegar. The fish was perfectly battered in a golden orange batter. The chips lightly salted and perfectly moist. i have never tasted a better set of chicken chunks. amen

Last time I ate from there the battered sausage went straight through me, and I was ill all night. Not fun

I’m sorry to say I totally agree with the other comments. Only ordered chips. Greasy and mushy. Great opportunity in such a small town but badly executed.

Wandering through Corsham on an autumnal evening and we were peckish. We stumbled across this fish and chip shop. Very bright, smelt great and nice staff. We ordered and went for a short walk, on return there were about 8-9 others queuing. We collected our food and thanked our stars that we ordered when we did. The haddock was delicious, fabulous chips and the mushy peas were spot on. We will be there again if we are in Corsham.

Recently moved to the area and was told Tongs was a great chippy. Gave it 3 goes but the chips are just not that good, very greasy. Fish and battered sausages ok. We’ve been using the Chip shop on Station Hill in Chippenham ever since which is much cheaper and have much better food. I don’t know how a basic single chip shop can get it wrong. Maybe the lack of competition has made them complacent?

We have used this chip shop for many years but lately its been awful. 3 times in a row we have had virtually inedible chips, not peeled, dry and cold...oh and very greasy. Used to be quality but not any longer and will not be using again and would not recommend anyone else to either. Great shame as used to be great.

The food is amazing, it doesnt take long for your order to be ready. We are lucky to have such a good quality fish and chip shop in the area.

The worst fish and chip shop I have ever been to. God knows how long they leave the food to sit after they’ve cooked it. It tastes like its been there for hours and it’s so greasy - the oil it’s cooked in is obviously not fresh and has been used over and over again causing it to break down and seep into the food causing it to be greasy rather than crispy. I have been to this place several times - each time hoping it was a one off. But three strikes and you’re out I’m afraid and I’m not giving you the benefit of the doubt this time.

It does what it should - well cooked fish and chips. Best in the area, and I have to say we're lucky to have such a good chippy. They've been here a long time and long may they continue!

We use Tongs 3 times a month on average and have never been disappointed. If you request kids food items and large pieces of cod then be prepared to wait for hot freshly cooked items (i have no problem in the wait). Staff friendly and very welcoming. very reasonably priced.

The fish was overcooked and subsequently tough and dry. The chips sadly didn’t fare any better. Also dry. Overall this was a very poor quality meal. Not recommended.

We have always rated Tongs very highly and now that they have gone largely plastic free in their packaging, then this rates as one of the best Take Aways in town. Really well done Tongs for removing the one-use, non-recyclable, plastic styrofoam trays and replacing them with recycled and recyclable light cardboard trays. Absolutely brilliant move, and one that I hope pays dividends for your business.

We've always rated the food very highly from Tongs, but they sadly continue to dish out the plastic trays and containers like they were confetti.

Whilst the service was polite friendly , the quality of the food ( cod +chips regular in size ) also 1 portion of chips + savloe sausage was not eatable and I was extremely annoyed &disappointed .I believe some times due to the busy hours this can be overlooked !! but still should not happen

We use at least once every week it is always excellent service and food always freshly cooked and value for money Glad they are in Corsham and a credit to the town

The cod is nice but not that big. I never seem to go when a large is ready so would have to wait. Chips can be hit & miss. Sometimes those sharp pointy ones that spike the roof of your mouth. Ouch! But hey, it's our only fish & chip shop. Had worse, had better.

I decided to get fish and chips in Corsham for the first time and was very disappointed in the quality, the chips were a soggy greasy offering and the fish had obviously been cooked some time earlier as it had dried out. With great fish and chips available in Bradford on Avon and in Batheaston it's a shame Corsham's offering is so poor! Maybe cooking the fish to order might help?

I called here today Saturday 16th of March 2019 at approximately 1.10pm and got 2 portions of jumbo sausage and chips, they were both lukewarm when we went to eat them 3 minutes later and the chips were nothing but all the little scrap ends. I paid over £6 for this supposedly treat and I can say that both my wife and myself where totally disappointed and fed up of being sold 3rd rate food from this shop, if anyone wants to get good fish and chips they need to go to the fat Fryer at Batheaston, they will see what proper food is like, it's about time Corsham got another fish and chip shop, I mean we pay enough so aren't we entitled to first rate food.

Tried this place a few times and on its day the fish can be fantastic but also had times when we were disappointed. We always go for haddock. The chips are always great. On a good day I'd give them a 4.5

Went in to get some chips and don't understand why you have to wait so long, cant they just serve you some chips straight away, very disappointed

The food here is always delicious, freshly cooked and ample portions. Service is friendly and helpful, plenty of chit chat while you wait. Always busy so be prepared to wait but worth it.

I have used Tongs for many years as my local chippy. It is good food for the price, sometimes at the end of the evening the food isn't as fresh as it could be... But pleasant staff and value for money.

When in Corsham for a few days we had an urge for fish and chips so we tried Tongs Fish and Chip Shop on the high street, the food was hot and tasty and reasonably priced to convince us we would return if ever we visited Corsham again

As an occassional visitor to Corsham, I'm always happy to agree when my wife suggests a simple tea of fish and chips from this take-away. Everyting seems to be freshly cooked the portions are a good size, the prices are reasonable, take away meals are generally well wrapped ........ and the fish and chips taste great.

First time after reading mixed review. Fish good size and good, chips awful and at £15 for two a bit expensive when I can get better in Melksham for just under £10.Taking advantage of the location.

1st visit in about a year and the chips are the quality of 5 years ago. That is Soft and gooie sounds bad but its a good thing. the fish better was superb also

standard cheap chippy really. workers arent very chatty or charismatic but i do not want need or expect them to be at a fish and chip shop.

Solid fish'n'chip shop that gets busy early evenings. Good range of freshly fried product and consistent quality. Price reasonable.

Teníamos un coche de tenazas. La Sra. FB 2000 pedimos una hamburguesa, y como habían vendido de tartas, tuve el Pasty y patatas fritas. A menos de 5 minutos nos sirvieron la comida y estábamos en nuestro camino.

While my wife and I stayed in Corsham for 5 weeks we ate here a few times. The large cod and small chips is enough for 2 people, the fish was fresh and tasty. I'd have to say best fish and chips in Cosham.

Nothing special. Longish wait and chips were not very hot. I would only go back if other shops closed.

Fuimos 3 millas para conseguir llevar el viernes por la noche. Cod y patatas fritas para dos. Fue el peor que he tenido. 10 libras desgastadas. Mucho de una noche fría a volver. V sin problemas

Pescado y patatas cocinadas mal! Tuvimos que esperar 15 minutos para la comida casera donde los únicos allí. Pedimos dos grandes bacalao y patatas fritas, hecha y donde thechips el gran Bacalao era el final del pescado con la piel! La forma más fácil de comidas totalmente deshecha... No recomendado.

The title says it all really. Fast service, great packaging & fantastic taste. We have started going once a week as the food is so great

Nice People they will prepare for you so that when you get there its ready no waiting as it would spoil inany case / the last time we called midday Fish cooked to perfection but Chips were cooked some time ago and lots of bits and pieces the Hopper should be cleared right our before fresh goes in also the Chips were just not hot enough and soggy could do better.

This is a takeaway chippy with other offerings like meat pies. It is just off of High Street down Pickwick. There aren't any seats to be found, so be ready to eat while you walk, or just take it home. Great local option for those who prefer not to venture into a public house for fish and chips.

Go to Tongs quite often. Nice folk and food is quick and consistently good. Menu is comprehensive albeit a touch costly.

Nice staff just what you want in a chip shop. doesn't have many seats to wait on though the wait is never long.

Sometimes the food is fresh and very good, but then once in a while the food doesn't seem fresh and isn't so good

Went to Tongs after deciding to go retro and have fish and chips. The shop was busy and my first thought was going to be waiting ages, but the services was quick and took about 10 minutes to get my order ready. It was an amazing meal. Fishcake and chips. High quality and really tastey. Value you for money and worth visit.

The cod is very tasty. The chips are well cooked. I think it is quite pricey, but it appears fish and chips are becoming more expensive lately. Very convenient for a Friday treat.

Sometimes I really have a hankering for good fish and chips and the feeling struck when visiting this delightful part of Wiltshire. Two locals said that Tongs was the place to go and for me, the experience was just what I was looking for.If I made any mistake at all, it was ordering a "large chips" to go along with my Haddock . . . and what a mistake it was as the portion would have served three or two very hungry souls!I passed on the peas and the offerings of Spring Rolls etc., but there is plenty to choose from.

Ate here about two years ago. Was so ill from the haddock that I have never eaten fish since. Very very bad. Does not have the greatest of reputations in Corsham.

The soggiest chips on the planet with very small fish portions covered lots of plain tasteless batter. HOWEVER..... the fiscakes, sausages, and other items are very good.

Late back after a hospital visit so decided to get fish & chips. There was no que, so the fish was in as soon as we ordered. The Large portion of chips were ok but a bit soggy for me, the fish was really good with a nice crispy batter. Timely, pleasant service and value for money – haddock, chips, mushy peas and a curry sauce for £15. Not bad at all!

I have been here 4 times. Twice i ordered fish & chips and got what i paid for. Twice i ordered large COD & chips once got a good cod. Last time i got some other bland white fish. NOT COD... Not going there again.

There has been much effort in the hospitality industry to elevate humble fast foods into hipster chow, with prices to match. Thank goodness Tongs just does proper fish and chips well, with no bells and whistles. My boyfriend and I wanted Chinese for lunch but that was closed, as was our second choice Indian. In despair we headed for the pub but were stopped in our track by a familiar, traditional smell. Fish and chips! When we first went in, both of us felt some trepidation as the two members of staff were very young boys messing about and checking their mobiles. But once we'd placed our order they got down to it. I had small haddock and chips, and my man had large cod and chips. If you haven't had fish and chips for a few years be warned: the chip portions have gone American. Even the small portion was too big to finish. The fish was moist, flaky and cooked to order. I usually have to add more salt and vinegar myself even if I ask for lots, so I was surprised and pleased that the seasoning was just right. We sat on a bench in the sunshine and watched as people passing sniffed the air enviously. I had fish and chips at Rick Stein's in Padstow a while back - overpriced and nothing special. This is fish and chips as it is supposed to be - nothing more, nothing less. And where else can you get a very filling meal for just over a tenner these days?

Coming from Greece, I am not a Fish & Chips expert. In any case, I've been to London 4-5 times already, and I eat fish & chips every time. I would say that this time in Corsham I wasn't as satisfied as before.

We have been taking home fish and chips from Tongs for many many years now and they are consistently the best in town. They cook the Haddock to order and it is always great. Very generous helpings of chips. And a very friendly, welcoming lady usually working the till.
