wonderful restaurant - lovely atmosphere, brilliant food, v reasonable prices. stumbled across this place by accident and very glad we did!

All round wonderful friendly and food was yet again outstanding. Every time visit hay Tomatitos Tapas Bar is the first stop for a lovely evening.

(Rating as a restaurant, not used accommodation) Laid back restaurant a bit like pub style decor and layout, very busy, with quite good food.

Great food, great service, great atmosphere. The staff are really friendly and have time for you even though they were busy. A really fun evening. Excellent !!!

From start to finish we were made to feel extremely welcome and comfortable. Great beer and the tapas was absolutely scrumptious. I would highly recommend.

Very busy on Saturday night, but a table was found after about half an hour, and the food was delicious, the service great and ambience superb, a real buzz.

Despite the crowd, a friendly and warm welcome! We ate well And. It's open on Sunday evening!!!!!!

Absolutely loved this place! My partner and I visited on the first night of a two day trip to Hay and were so impressed we went back the second night too. Over the two nights we got through all of the veggie/vegan tapas and thought they were all packed with delicious flavours and textures. I often find eating out a bit underwhelming, but this hit the mark with every bite! What’s more, the service was fabulous - badass women owners, curating a buzzing atmosphere. The prices are so reasonable I actually sent the bill back the first night because I was convinced they had UNDER charged me! An absolute gem of a restaurant.

The food quality and the service were not great. We communicated intolerance to dairy and spicy and some of the tapas had actually dairy and spices. The only good taps were the tortilla.

Excellent food. They looked after us well, even though they were absolutely slammed when we came in. Excellent service.

We went to eat at the restaurant this evening here and we loved the service. However the food wasn’t the best. First absolutely no salt on anything. When you deep fry everything in your way, at least add salt. Without it it’s just fatty oily food. We choose 9 different dishes and we tried almost all the proteins on the menu and all came deep fried and we weren’t expecting so much deep fried stuff. we know tapas and that wasn’t by far any Spanish food there. Too bad the staff there was amazing and very helpful. That was the only reason for 3 stars 🌟

Called here after a visit to The Hay Festival, it was extremely busy but the staff were accommodating and helpful, food was divine, we had 5 dishes (all vegetarian) everything was delicious, if I had to pick one it would be the aubergine chips, they especially were perfection!

Delicious tapas here. Friendly swift service. Lovely setting. My favourite was the chick pea dish.

What a lovely place, friendly and welcoming staff, delicious food which was served quickly. I would highly recommend a visit. You can’t book a table so we went at 6pm which was ideal.

Very nice food (standard tapas fare with dinner extras that I've never had before). Very good wine list (I had an excellent white Rioja). The staff were brilliant, pleasant and very attentive. For 5 of us we thought £90 (including 2 carafes of wine!) was excellent value.

Close to town center. A nice cosy place serving a variety of tapas dishes. The service was very good, the prices very competitive and food well cooked and presented. This restaurant is set over 2 floors with steep steps to the upper floor. Pre booking is advisable as it is popular to both locals and visitors. There are a great selection of draught and bottled beers and ciders complimenting the wine list. We had a very enjoyable evening there, tasting some good food and drinks. All the dishes are freshly cooked to order so some delays are to be expected. This place is well worth a visit when in town. There is no parking locally but payable car parks are situated close to the town center a few minutes walk away. Taxis are available locally too.

Visited with my daughter during a book buying break at Hay. What a lovely experience. Food was delicious, wine was perfect but the service was out of this world, it was so friendly and personal. Cannot wait to go back.

I don't like to leave negative reviews, but wanted to issue a word of warning. This was the worst tapas I've ever had, and some of the worst food in general. Also, the cutlery was covered with dust and hair.

Great place for tapas and so friendly. We had to wait a while for a table (you cannot book) but we sat at the bar and staff were so good at making sure we had a table after less than 20 minutes. Lovely choice of tapas (I am not normally a fan of tapas) and what we had was brilliant and very tasty (I may have been converted!). It was all so good and the choice of wine and value for money was excellent. In other recent reviews I have commented on the price of food these days, but at this restaurant the value was way ahead and the wine serve in glasses, carafes or bottles was also reasonable. Would definitely return here and recommend it highly.

This is a great friendly place filled with locals and tourists in the wonderful town of Hay on Wye. Great choice of food and drink and attentive staff. A roaring fire and great atmosphere just a lovely cosy place for a relaxing meal . We love it.

Had the most wonderful meal last night for the last night of my holiday. We ordered 8 dishes, the venison in chocolate and sesame and the roasted cauliflower salad were definitely firm favourites although all the dishes were delicious. I had the lime pot with brandy snap for dessert. I could have eaten 50 of them they were so good. The staff were just incredible. Friendly, welcoming and attentive, would recommend the restaurant to anyone. Thank you for such a lovely evening.

This is a local hub for food in Hay. Incredible tapas dishes, you can just keep ordering and sample the whole menu if you wish. The Sangria is delicious and the atmosphere is great. You can’t book so I recommend getting there for opening 4/5pm or for the second sitting at around 7:30/8pm. If there are no tables free then sit at the bar and watch the hustle and bustle… The perfect setting for food & drink with friends and there’s a reason it’s always so busy!! Cannot recommend enough

Ate here this evening with my partner and parents. The food, drinks, atmosphere and service were all top notch! The prices were also great! A special mention to the lady that served us (didn’t catch her name but she is a medical professional by day), she was SO lovely and welcoming! Loved her! We can’t wait to return and would encourage everyone else to visit this gem!

Just rolled out of this wonderful..friendly bar, Having had the most beautiful tapas plates, full of wonderful flavours and plenty of choices. We have a coeliac, vegetarian and two hungry men to feed. Highly recommended. This place has a fabulous atmosphere and we would definitely return. Thank you for the food recommendations of the lovely lady waiting on the tables (nurse by day) and the rest of the staff that were very friendly. Fabulous. Service and food spot on - great selection of small plates with lots of veggie options. Friendly vibe. The aubergine chips with honey were fabulous . (As was everything! Pork meat balls, patatas bravas, chickpeas with spinach, roast Mediterranean veg with goats cheese..). Perfect.

Another wonderful visit to Tomatitos. Always such lovely staff, a great atmosphere and wonderful food. So much choice for coeliacs and vegetarians. Can't recommend it enough!

Great night at Tomatito's last night. Fab food, great service!

We had heard good things. Came with friends from hay who assured us it would be great, sadly it was very poor. Service was poor and uninterested, food was dire. No seasoning or flavour but our friends were regulars so we didn’t complain. A shame as we had high hopes.

Poor service and okay food. Seemed more preoccupied with serving drinks to the students. Went on a Friday night and service started off great but we were soon forgotten about / overlooked while a flow of students went to the bar. Had to chase someone to place an order - they overlooked our table. Food was okay but no side plates and one of the dishes was wrong. The incorrect dish was actually really nice so didn't complain. Service was generally poor and had to ask twice for the bill. All in all it was an okay bit a bit disappointing.

We were meeting up in Hay as it’s half way between families so we wanted to have food before heading back home we were going to book somewhere so I reviewed trip advisor this came up 3rd and was a walking only so I thought perfect as love a tapas. All I can say is it is what the reviews say on the tin.. No t only that the welcome you get is so friendly everyone working there were so attentive and patient with us … would definitely recommend you will not be disappointed…

We love this place! Great food, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, very good value - what’s not to like? Tomatillos is a real asset to Hay.

We haven't eaten at the tapas bar in quite some time, we had heard there was a new chef and were eager to try it out. The dishes have changed abit but we did feel that the one menu was getting abit stale, hence the lack of visits on our part. We were absolutely delighted with the new menu and we made some amazing choices, it was nice to see a good selection of desserts. The new chef seems to know what he is doing and obviously knows how things should be presented (we did feel the old menu was thrown on the plate abit, sorry). All in all a first class experience!

I have been eating and drinking at Tomatitos for many years; invariably, the reception has been good and the food has been great. I last ate there with friends about 4 months ago on a busy night and ,for once, I was disappointed with the food as the service was slow and erratic and the food was luke warm. I then went back after the new chef arrived a few weeks ago and, on both occasions, the food was excellent...well prepared, garnished, timely and very tasty. Its nice to see that most of the regular menu has been retained, but also to see new, innovative dishes on offer.I will continue to eat and drink at Tomatitos.

I am honestly baffled by all the good reviews on here! Staff were friendly but food was pretty awful. Maybe we were just really unfortunate or maybe we have high standards but we thought our meal was really quite bad. Some dishes reasonably nice (slaw and spinach parcels), some sort of ok (watery, tasteless squash gratin, tasteless stuffed pepper) and some truly terrible (2 tiny morsels of floppy-skinned chicken that tasted boiled, bulked out with fried potatoes swimming in water). They took the chicken off the bill. But worst of all was a crème Catalan (crime brûlée) that was totally split and grainy - really unpleasant and just wrong. But by that time we couldn’t be bothered to raise another issue so just paid and left. Really don’t know how a place can serve food this bad and seemingly still be very popular. Hay needs better!

Dogs in the restaurant. One was at a neighbouring table and actually came sniffing at my elbow while I was eating. Not service dogs. Who has dogs at the tables of a restaurant?! That's not hygienic.

Probably the best place to eat in Hay, great food. Lots of vegan options or can be made vegan, they swapped the honey for maple syrup on one of the dishes so we didn't miss out.

Great atmosphere and super friendly. Delicious food and they managed to navigate our requests to make some of the dishes vegan with good humour. Our dog was warmly welcomed. We had the suggested wine which was gorgeous too. Only gripe was the kitchen was closed by 8.30 when we wanted to order dessert. Would have been great if they’d given us a 10 minute warning! Would definitely return.

Just had the tapas, probably the best food we’ve had in a long time. Amazing food, excellent value, brilliant service. Good cider and wine. Definitely going back this week, maybe tomorrow. But tomorrow we’re gonna walk.

You won’t find better tapas bars, even not in Spain - reeeally well crafted variety of classic, modern and also vegetarian tapas. Staff was lovely! Besides that, the tapas prices are really reasonable, especially if we compare them to the familiar prices for tapas in Germany

There was a wide variety of dishes to chose from, both vegetarian and meat, and all very reasonably priced. The portion sizes were good too. I would say the photos of the food don’t do this place justice, it was very tasty

The 2 of us ate here on our first night in Hay, and were so impressed returned the following evening for a second bite. It’s apparently been there for 11 years, the staff are really friendly, and the clientele eclectic. Service excellent. The tapas are remarkably genuine, and a welcome change from the standard pub food all around. We had 5 sharing dishes with bread and the bill was an astonishingly reasonable £49!

An all around amazing place to eat. Superb staff and atmosphere in generel I felt very comfortable eating there with my family. The food was a 5 star for me aswell I had the pork meatballs, calamari, and sweet chilli chicken wings which were all delicious. 10/10 would definetely reccomend going here, and I would go again!!!
