Nice food friendly place and staff

What a sweet little place with lots of outdoor seating. It's a hidden gem that is pretty well sign posted down a side street. There's a village convenience shop with a post office. Walk through there to get to the cafe where there's indoor seating and a ramp to the outdoor seating area, some under cover. Meals were freshly prepared. We had bacon rolls with cappuccinos. Nice. Two lovely ladies running the cafe, customer oriented. Will have to go again and try some other items on the menu.

Delightful little cafe. Good for a cycle/walk/run stop. Tucked behind the shop. Food was good value and can highly recommend the Welsh Rarebit. Will return!

Best bacon sandwich anywhere, ever 👋 Chunky, fresh, granary bread with delicious local bacon. Fab, local food in a lovely setting 🫶

This is a cracking place per sec, but noted as a super bike stop. It’s not far from the beautiful river bridge in the lower part of the village. There is seating at the rear of the cafe and some more at the front. You can keep your eye on your bikes at either location. Super coffee, and super sticky cakes too. There is also a shop there if you’re a multi day bike tourer.

Excellent brunch, fast polite service. Lovely food and very reasonably priced. We will return!!! Nice area around, all locals very friendly. Parking close by.

Coach and Horses Pub and BNB recommended this local cafe. I visited twice with my dog. The food was lovely, and so was the service. Dog friendly as well. Will visit again.

Popped in here to grab a couple of take out coffees. The lady in the shop wasn’t sure if the cafe was still open but when I went in the lady was there and said she was happy to serve me.We ended up having a lovely chat while she prepared the drinks . The flat whites were absolutely delicious- sometimes flat whites can be a bit hit and miss but these were awesome.The cakes looked amazing and I would definitely return here if we are in the area.

We sat at an empty table (which hadn’t been cleared) and collected three menus to look at. This was all done in sight of the person at the counter. We chose what to eat and our daughter queued to give the order. When she got to the counter, she was told that they weren’t taking any more orders. What a way to treat customers. A waste of our time. This used to be a lovely place to eat and we used to recommend it!

We stayed in the village for a week and had breakfast here on our last day but wished we'd done this every day! Excellent food and very good coffee. The kind server happily made me a 1.5 shot coffee at my request. Very friendly staff. Dog friendly. Lovely outdoor seating area at back overlooking river and a covered area with comfy sofa and a sort of swing chair. Also a very good well stocked shop that does excellent home made ready meals, we did all our shopping here for the week.

We visited Walnut Tree Bistro for breakfast on Sunday and had such a wonderful experience. Very welcoming, friendly members of staff. The food was perfect, very quick and beautifully presented. We had the pancakes with bacon & maple syrup, and cooked breakfast made with local produce. We had a coffee outside in the sunshine with views over the river. Will be visiting again!

Great atmosphere, wonderful food, warm and friendly service. I would definitely recommend it while in the area. Vegan, vegetarian and GF options for mains, drinks and cakes.

Staff were great but unfortunately the food was a bit basic for the price. Wet ham and frozen chips, the eggs were cooked lovely! My partner's lasagne was loaded with mozzarella but unfortunately quite a lot of dried herbs. No views of the beautiful river despite the location.

Slow service, no atmosphere plastic marquee in a carpark, plates left on the table dirty tablecloths and staff more interested in chatting. Asked for a coffee and 10minutes later found it on the side of the counter getting cold. Overpriced. Will not be returning. Shame as it's a lovely little village by the river Usk.

Lovely little cafe in Llangynidr by the Usk, a minute from the Mon & Brec canal. Outdoor space under marquee where you can hear the river rushing below. Good range of breakfasts and light bites, friendly and efficient service. Perfect for walkers and cyclists.

Shambolic service and half the menu wasn’t available. Most of the tables were full of cutlery, and the staff didn’t notice / were more interested in chatting. The outside area is quite nice, although is essentially a gazebo in a car park. One staff member started having a full English at 1pm despite a group of people waiting and tables full of dirty plates.

Wrong food arrived after order, but still delicious. Uhh.. Yeah nothing mean or positive to say other than lovely and quiet.

Just stopped in for a drink during one of the hikes. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere outside was relaxing.

Good place to stop for a rest or to have a snack. The plastic tent outside is probably practical but not cozy when it's not raining. Other tables outside are scarce. My carrot cake was a bit on the dry side - I would guess not made the same day. I am not complaining - it is what it is and we were happy enough.

Stopped for a sandwich and drink after walking the canal from Crickhowell delicious chicken and pesto sarnie with crisps and salad and a well earned lager. Delicious, well worth a visit

Never got chance to go in the Walnut Bistro but had a lovely walk by the river that runs along it,beautifull river so nice and peaceful and got to see an otter catching fish on the other side...then drove about a Mile up river and found this old and beautifull church...so,so peaceful there🙏 we'll worth a visit there😎

Not 2bad. Just a few positions in the menu, but that's completely enough i think😉 shop just behind the door, what's a big + as well. Prices were quite high, i think, but probably there's nothing else around, so that's probably the reason🙂

Popped in after driving past signs lots of times. We had already had breakfast so only had a couple of coffees. Service was very friendly, coffees were great. Will be back very soon to either try a veggie breakfast or the battered haloumi and chips. Wish we had tried it sooner.

Came for breakfast with my partner and got ignored when we walked through the door. We ordered our food, only to get told 50 mins later that the food my partner had ordered wasn’t available as it was veggie. They then came out to apologise for the wait 20 mins later at which point we were so hungry we were chewing the table. The communication was so shocking we just left. They said the delay was as they were so busy, but there was only 4 tables. Just a disappointing stop.

Amazing breakfast. Great value breakfast, very tasty. The weekend deal is really worth coming for, so much so that we went back twice! The bacon was cooked exactly right, just what I wanted. Staff are lovely and friendly, great atmosphere. Connected to village shop where you can grab your essentials. Highly recommend.

Stopped by chance whilst geo caching with my sister. I had scampi and she had sausage, egg and chips. We thoroughly enjoyed it. Friendly staff, yummy food and would recommend 😋

Family run shop and bistro we stopped for a coffee with oat milk, in their spacious marquee. We had our dog with us who was not allowed in the indoor seating area. We had walked along the canal and river Usk prior to our visit.

A lovely little bistro, part of the grocery in this small village. Personnel was very, very kind and helped choosing from the menu to this hungry travellers. Take your time and enjoy this lovely place!

It's such a shame because this is such a lovely spot, but each of the 3 times we've visited here we've had really long waits on our food. This time it was a Monday morning and relatively quiet, and it took 50+ mins for our 4 breakfasts to be served. On top of that, 2 of the breakfasts weren't correct, but by that point we didn't want to have to wait to get it fixed. Also, the knowledge on allergens isn't great, and staff on each occasion seem to confuse what is and isn't dairy-free etc. Even details like glasses not properly cleaned. I really didn't want to leave a negative review as the staff are friendly, but we gave it 3 chances and improvement is really needed. We won't be visiting again.

Moored our canal boat 2 minutes away and stopped for breakfast. Every member of staff here are happy, helpful and friendly. The outdoor marquee has heating, books and plenty of space. The full breakfast, muffins and drinks were delicious and our 12 year old commented it was the best breakfast ever! There was even a sausage for Rosie dog. Perfect spot to see the Usk and uneven footpaths can take the very able down to the riverside. We took photos from the bridge. We will definitely come back. Thank you all for such a welcome.

What a find! Superb lunch in a lovely, river and woodland view setting. Al fresco with the accompaniment of a varied chorus of birdsong. I've never come across chicken, bacon and mushroom madras before. Gorgeous. The poppadoms were the lightest and crispiest I've ever had. Fish and chips looked fine, with the crisp batter a rich golden colour. Scampi was similarly rich looking and plump. The homemade tartare sauce was remarked upon as being really very good. Service was swift. The salted caramel ice cream cheesecake was a new and enjoyable experience, even though I'm not big cheesecake fan. Portion size was good in all instances. Menu had both standard fare and intriguing dishes worthy of further exploration. Pricing was good for the quality of the food. The only disappointment was that we didn't get a sight of the neighbouring nuthatch. Maybe next time.

Staff were so friendly giving water and treats to my dog. The food was also incredible the fish was the best I've tasted in years! Kudos to all the staff and owner I will definitely recommend and come back for more!

Found this hidden gem when looking for somewhere for full English breakfast, and they did not dissappoint! Probably one of the best hearty full English we have had in a long while; bacon was large and thick cut, mushrooms were soft and juicy, and they included a great slice of black pudding. As for the service, the staff were lovely and friendly, and we weren't left waiting for any long period of time; I believe it was the owner who also checked in on us when we were eating and when paying to check everything was to our liking. The only minor downside was the egg not being runny, but with everything else being delicious, and the service being great, then it is still a 5 star worthy cafe in our eyes. We have every intention to return when we next visit the area. Thank you.

Unexpected place to find a cafe and even more unexpected to find it mostly full on a Friday lunchtime. The food was good and reasonably priced and the menu has options for gluten or dairy free food.

Good cup of tea in a lovely setting; picked up a couple of their frozen curries on the way out and they were brilliant! Just what we need when we're too lazy to cook on holiday :)

Great cafe, open all day, most days. Does great breakfasts of various sizes from quick sarnie to Full English and bigger again. Brunch and lunch options too, try the Chicken & Bacon Madras with half n half plus popadom, if you're hungry. Lasagne, Jacket potato and vegan shrubbery too. Plenty of cakes and cheese cake biscuits etc. Its licenced too so draught beers, bottles, cider and wine plus all the Tea and Coffee options to suit most. It's not cheap but good value, clean, homemade with table service in the marquee or al Fresco right by the lovely River Wye. Parking on site is limited to Blue Badge only. If you're a bit cold theres plenty of overhead and table heating, just ask.

The CRT staff at the locks told us about this place. We had cycled from Brecon and were looking for somewhere to eat. The food was very good and the service friendly and quick. We sat outside with an amazing view over the Usk to the hills beyond.

I have had many a breakfast here since we moved to Llangynidr and they are always great - better than Crickhowell, I tell Peter. The curries are great too. Peter is always welcoming and has a great team. You HAVE to try it - you will not be disappointed.

We live locally, and this is our favourite breakfast spot. Peter and his crew always welcoming and is very family friendly. Breakfasts are just fantastic.

This is a wonderful gem of a place to stop at. Easy to find and well situated by the river, the canal or (as we were doing) for climbing Tor-y-Foel. The owner was lovely; helpful and friendly, (thank you) and served us some amazing chicken soup to fuel our hike. Great coffee and tea too. Highly recommend a visit!

Absolutely top-class fish in beer-and-black-pepper batter, with chips, mushy peas and amazing home-made tartare sauce. Daughter enjoyed the battered halloumi and chips, too. The marquee was a bit draughty, but with the table heaters we were warm enough. Very friendly, helpful people.

Over the years I’ve become a bit of a regular at The Walnut Tree when I’ve been working & teaching in the river, normally I just enjoy the fantastic coffee and fun conversations but this week was the first time I’ve ordered food for my lunch break. The cheesy chips are LEGENDARY It was so good to seen Pete and Sian after an enforced 2 year hiatus and I’m looking forward to coming back soon

We’ve been using the river here for two days. Everyone at the cafe were provided with the warmest of welcomes and a nothing is too much trouble approach. Coffee was amazing one of the best espressos I’ve had this side of Milan! Lasagna at lunchtime was tasty and filling perfect for a busy day on the water! Carry on team Walnut Tree you’re great!

I visited here with my family who were down for the weekend. We had a fabulous meal and Peter (as usual) was the perfect host. Amazing food and a great atmosphere. Thanks again.

I really liked this place because it is cosy even though it’s outside. There are warm lamps which makes the experience very comfortable. I liked listening to the river while having my fish and chips. Peter is really friendly as are all of his staff. He has really thought of everything. The chips are crispy and the batter is superb!Ferdie.

Stopped here for breakfast a couple of times as it was a short distance from the canal where we were having a stay on an electric narrowboat. We found great breakfasts and lovely friendly service. Evening menu looked good too.

Absolutely bloody marvelous!! Had dinner here, completely by accident to be honest as most place around were booked up by the Green Man festival crowd. Low key atmosphere, yet totally welcoming, and the food was amazing. Will definitely return

Had fish and chips on the terrace while stopping nearby on canal boat. Was most amazing fish snd chips ever, beautiful crispy batter, lovely white cod, great chips all in an enormous portion. My partner had scampi equally as good. Plus the homemade superb tartar sauce. All served by super friendly staff. Not to be missed. Note: Fish and chips is only served Friday and Saturday evenings, but menu looks great other evenings too. And excellent value, much cheaper than pub food.

First the positives.Good menu, good portion size at very good prices. The staff were very polite and attentive and the outside courtyard had a wercoming feeling. Dog and cyclist friendly.Some negativesTook almost an hour for two fairly basic meals to be delivered. It then took three attempts to get the bill. It is described as having a Riverside setting. That is true but it is completely screened by trees and whilst possible to hear it you can't see it.Overall, yes I would be happy to visit again because the food is good and reasonably priced. But if you are in a hurry you might like to reconsider.

Absolutely fabulous. Generous owners, wonderfully stocked to brimming shop, friendly staff, open all hours (almost), fantastic breakfasts, lovely takeaway curry, didn’t have dinner in but i suspect it would be the same. Every village should have one! Thank you

Lovely cafe stop after a swim 🥶in the Usk. Really friendly staff, nice food and great outdoor seating area. Super dog and children friendly with extra dog biscuits and even some sweets at the end for the little ones!

Food very mediocre. Lunch was frozen French fries (overcooked) supermarket type coleslaw and battered fish. Sandwiches were unimaginative and put together very quickly Waitress complained to every table how overworked she was , the outdoor space is nice. Half empty so indoors must have been full. I think employing a chef would help them

Absolutely perfect. Friendly and clean. I had the dog with me and was shown to a quiet corner outside where I and the dog could sit in peace. I had a lovely cup of coffee and a chocolate brownie-to-die-for.

Visited from our canal boat - moored at Bridge 131 and a short walk down the hill. We had a full cooked breakfast which was absolutely excellent- all very Covid safe with outdoor seated marquee and heaters. There is a local village shop in the same location so is great for stocking up as well. Open in the evenings as well until 8pm - highly recommended
