We popped in for lunch and ordered the quiche and the Welsh Rarebit. A nice couple arrived celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary and sat on the table across from us. They ordered steaks from the menu and a bottle of prosecco. The server then turned on ambient music that was so loud that it was impossible to hold a conversation. I managed to turn it down just as the server appeared back to say that they had no steaks. I looked out of the window behind her and the nice couple to where I could see a lovely local butchers where I was pretty sure they sold lovely local steak! They could probably even deliver for free! The couple, disappointed ordered the fish and chips instead! Another couple arrived, were seated and given menus by the same server who mentioned nothing about the steak...a short while later she returned and they ordered... steaks...to also be told that they had no steak!! The piece of quiche that arrived was the smallest piece of quiche I've ever seen in my life and was almost lost in the garden of green leaves that surrounded it on the plate. If there was a big draft it would likely have blown off the plate. The Welsh Rarebit was soggy and tasted bitter. I asked if we could have a bigger piece of quiche. Ten minutes later the server returned to tell us that all the quiche pieces were that size. I explained the situation to the duty manager who apologised, didn't charge us and told me that the chef had recently left, the kitchen was staffed by trainees and the place was probably going to close down soon anyway. I suggested that they do so sooner rather than later and that the prosecco for the nice steakless couple should probably be free. We went to a nice deli down the road and purchased two single pieces of quiche about 10 times the size of the one we had been served...oh and there was indeed lovely fresh local steak in the butchers shop. Since then they have announced that the restaurant will close on 31st October 2024 Hopefully it will re-open one day with properly trained staff and a kitchen that makes the most of local produce and chefs who have the ability to cross the road.

Fabulous dinner accompanied with good Welsh wine. Award winning dishes were advertised on the menu, they were exactly that. Amazing cooking, the braised leeks was spectacular, as was nori tacos. Good service. Really enjoyed the extras, bread with dipping oil, welsh sea salt and a miso soup. Slightly questionable music playlist, but it amused us! Thank you for a delicious dinner.

Really enjoyed our lunch at Chartists 1770. I had the wild mushrooms on sourdough bread with a side order of homemade chips. My son and his friend had a big plate of ham and eggs that they polished off in double quick time. My husband had fish and chips which had a really nice crispy batter. For desert the boys had homemade ice cream that came in a range of flavours and my husband and I had Gabi's lemon and pear desert that was divine - definitely award-winning. Highly recommend.

Went here for my partners birthday meal and it was perfect! The braised leeks were lovely and my boyfriend had the steak which he said was great. The staff were also really helpful with me being a veggie which is always nice. Would definitely come back again - thank you :)

Booked for Sunday lunch as we were staying locally, 4 adults, 1 older child. I asked for the Lamb dinner but asked for the rump to be well cooked through, when it appeared it was still bleeding, as was another lamb rump on the table we’d asked to be cooked through, roast potatoes, not very roasted, some still hard in the centre, vegetables were the nicest part although could have done with a little longer cooking, I don’t mind my vegetables having a bite but these were almost uncooked in the centre. Gravy was watery and lacked flavour, 2 friends had beef which was served ok. My daughter had sausage and chips from the child’s menu, to be honest, we all wished we’d have had the same as her! The place lacked atmosphere and felt quite cold and un-inviting, when you then add the prices into the equation it’s not really worth it, we’ve had nicer meals at pubs, much nicer! I took a trip to the ladies room, clearly hadn’t been cleaned from the evening before, overflowing sanitary bin, faecal matter on the toilet seat, no toilet roll. Staff seemed disinterested, didn’t interact with customers other than taking the order. I wouldn’t recommend and I definitely wouldn’t return.

The historic building has been stripped of all character. It is now a totally anodyne place, with a corporate feel. The food was mediocre, but the menu lived up to the historic credentials, being pitched about 20 years in the past. As vegetarians, we would not go there again. We were, at best, tolerated, but not understood, and certainly not embraced as a C21st growing population with an eye towards sustainability.

A brilliant casual fine dining experience! Me and my girlfriend visited Chartists 1770 for a intimate and romantic birthday meal and it did not disappoint. There was a great selection of wines and beers on offer and the food menu definitely got our mouths watering. We both ordered mains dishes only but we were treated to some lovely warm homemade bread to begin with and then some incredible mussels in a delicious sauce. Lastly our mains arrived and the venison was cooked beautifully, along with the crumbly pastry of the mushroom pie and some incredibly tasty veg to go alongside. They truly were dishes to die for!

We have visited the Chartists several times this year but on our kast visit on the 29th September I was very disappointed the meal was very bland hardly any seasoning on the dish

A treat to come here tonight for the end of our holidays. We had coffee & cake for eleven’s, cake & a pint later and then an evening meal. We had 3 courses plus complimentary sourdough larva bread & amuse Bouch. The food was sublime along with great service and very reasonable pricing. If you are in Llanidloes or near & you want a lovely gastronomic treat…try here, you will enjoy.

This is a lovely café situated in a small alleyway called The Backfold, which cuts through from the High Street to the front main entrance to the Castle and the main car park. If you're looking for a good British breakfast or brunch, or lunch, this is the best in Hay. Homemade, order by choosing from the outside board, choose a table number and then enter the café. It's tiny with limited seating but there's quite a few tables outside with umbrellas for protection against the elements. They do close early; about 2, but great food at great prices.

Amazing Curry Night! Blown away. Food was fab, service was spectacular. The Bar-man should be famous, he is next level. Don't go here if you hate warm-welcomes and brilliant atmospheres. Will definitely be back asap.
