The Red Lion in Powys

A great little pub. Proper local feel and a proper, traditional pub. Felt a bit sorry for the lady behind the bar, she seemed rushed off her feet, but remained friendly despite this (I wouldn't have). We had a quick stop for a pint and a bap. We could have bedded down for the afternoon. We will be back.

Absolutely awesome atmosphere in the place, I’m not gonna lie from the outside I thought it was gonna be a drinkers only local pub but I’m glad we went in! Food is stunning the service is absolutely spot on extremely friendly and looked after us very well! I would highly recommend :)

Lovely local friendly pub giving tips where to visit. Nice beer garden which we were lucky to use during our visit. We didn't eat there so can't comment but did see several Sunday lunches and it was obviously all fresh veg

A nice and welcoming pub. I was riding from St Neots to Ffestiniog and this was perfectly placed to enjoy a meal and escape the rain after visiting the nearby Cloverlands Model Car Museum. The menu is standard pub grub but there is enough variety for anyone (no vegan option though, just veggy), I had the Thai Red Curry which was perfect to warm me up after I was drenched in rain. Food came quickly, the staff are friendly and the atmosphere of the pub was welcoming. The bar was full but there is a separate upstairs seating area for people eating hot food. Finally, the prices were very fair. If I am ever in the area again, I would happily eat here again.

Friendly welcoming staff and locals

Called in for a drink or two ! Lovely pub, friendly staff . Enjoyed sitting in the beer garden in the lovely weather.

We caught the steam train from Welshpool to Llanfair. The landlady of the Red Lion went out of her way to ensure our food was ready to be served as soon as we walked in to ensure we could get the next train back. The Sunday Roast was gorgeous. The beef and the pork were both melt in the mouth. My grandson loved his Chicken roast with its own tasty chicken gravy. A very warm welcome with plenty of customers around.

We were staying in a yurt nearby. We called in Friday night on the off-chance they could fit us in for dinner. I had the steak and ale pie. We went back on the Saturday and had the same again it was that good. Brilliant, competent bar and waiting on staff.

We booked a table for a meal because the pub had been recommended by a friend..We ordered our meals and the portions were very generous and very tasty..The Staff were so friendly and the service was excellent. Definitely recommended for good home cooking and we will be going back..

Excellent!!! Can't recommend it enough! Great home cooked food. I had the steak and ale pie, light flaky pastry full of large tender chunks of beef in a lovely gravy. Sister had the Cottage Pie, beefy, plenty of meat. The portions are piping hot and HUGE!

Stopped at the Red Lion to have a late lunch on our way back to London and were pleasantly surprised! Super-friendly staff, generous portions and a nice lil garden. Would happily recommend a stop here if you’re in the area!

Great atmosphere, lovely food, very friendly

We are stopping nearby and had spent about an hour trying to find somewhere to eat before stumbling across this pub. We ordered two adult meals, two children's meals and drinks. The food was really good, the children actually finished their meals which is rare, and the service was really friendly and welcoming and the price was good. We will definitely come here again and would recommend to anyone.

We had a great experience here at the Red lion. As a party of 12 it wasn't easy to find a great pub to have our evening meal but even with only two staff the accommodated us at the red lion and the service and meals were wonderful and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their experience at this local friendly pub.

Fantastic atmosphere and the best steak and ale pie and lasagne you'll find anywhere! Lots of fun and banter with the staff and the beer garden is a hidden gem.

The food here is surprisingly good. We've visited twice on seperate occasions to eat and were not disappointed. Very reasonably priced for the amount and quality. I would personally recommend the steak and ale pie.

Fantastic local pub for drinks a laugh and great food

Sunday dinner here was great. We had a warm welcome by the staff & our dog was also welcomed in. Great selection of beers. Food was nice & with good portions & a fair price. Now we have a caravan near here we’ll be back very often.

Friendliest pub ever! We got dropped off there after a breakdown in our car. Great welcome. Jeanette cooked us some food even though the kitchen was closed. Locals helped direct our friend to come and pick us up. Rhys behind the bar was helpful and friendly, just what we needed after a few fraught hours. Thank you all.

Family pub. Make you feel welcome

We were warmly welcomed by Jeanette on a stormy evening. The food was excellent, lovely homemade chilli. Rhys looked after us and our little dog. I can highly recommend a visit to this great, traditional little pub. Full of locals who made us feel like one of them.

Whilst staying in the area we booked in here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and what a great afternoon we had! It was quiet when we arrived and the staff let us choose the chanel so we could watch the rugby. Our roast dinners were brought out to us delicious, piping hot, plentiful and served by friendly staff. We would even go as far as saying that it was possibly the best pub roast dinner we have ever had! It was also very reasonably priced. The pub started to fill up and we ended up having a great laugh with some of the locals who were really friendly and made us feel really welcome. We didn't have much of an expectation when we arrived, however we had a really lovely afternoon with delicious food, beer and wine and great company. We will definitely go back here if we are ever in the area again!

Wonderful friendly and very helpful a local pub that throws it's arm's wide and welcomes all.Also you will find on a Friday night, probably the best band in the world I think they're called Cellar door drink there. Definitely been spotted on a couple of occasions.

Stayed here overnight with 4 friends on a cycle ride across Wales in August. Had comfortable beds and cosy rooms, good food, and amazing friendly service from the owners - great chat, accomodating our bikes and morning breakfast requests. We all loved it

Passing threw stopped for a bit to eat had our dog with us so weather was good day in beer garden but was told welcome inside if we wanted Food was lovely staff very friendly definitely would stop again if passing by .

Been a good 13 months since we have been here due to covid, they again have done us proud the steak pie is to die for so lean & tasty the pastry is so light & fluffy yummy. Hubby had his favourite cottage pie large portions good value for money, a must visit, will not be disappointed

Arrived without booking and friendly barman explained where we could sit and we chose to go in the beer garden. The locals were very welcoming and our food was delicious, I had veggie lasagne and husband had the pie which he said was lovely, Wouldn't hesitate to return

Hidden gem, super friendly staff. Not being from the area the staff welcomed us and suggested a Welsh ale (Three Tons) as I was not familiar. It was delicious. Outdoor beer garden was set up so cool. Spacious and Covid friendly. I'd recommend and would definitely be coming back.

Three of us having helped a mate tame his garden near Dolanog called at the Red Lion. Firstly, top kept and served beer (Three Tuns, Bishop’s Castle) and an excellent Guinness. Then, my goodness, the food!! The full size dinner plates were too small! Two of us enjoyed the pie with rich dark tasty gravy, loads of meat and lighter than air pastry topping, plus mashed potatoes and a giant helping o f chips and green vegs. Incredible portions and sensible pricing (£10-12). Couldn’t resist a sticky toffe with ice cream. Chef came and had a chat, she makes all the food from scratch and there is plenty of choice. Lovely staff, great place all round, loads of locals in too. Go again? You betcha asap

I was in town for a couple of days. Visit the area fairly often. Red Lion did the job. Food and drink from 3pm. It's a very local pub: almost family atmosphere. Good portions and beer decent. Basically ask and the team will make it happen. Take it as you find it: it is a natural pub serving the community. No fancy fit out or restaurant styled food. It fits the local and basic visitor needs well. Decent beer garden. Staff make you very welcome, even if not from the town. Will return when next in town.

Supposedly a dog friendly place. The chef told me to shorten my dogs lead, fair enough, but then called my daughters therapy dog a rat on a rope then proceeded to mouth off to the locals about him. So rude. The bar staff are nice & food was ok but not fantastic. I wouldnt visit again.

Just off the main road but if you want friendly staff and beautiful home cooked food then this is definitely the place for you! Highly recommend!

Dinner for 3 in this pub which has a lot of atmosphere. Portions were very generous.Excellent choice of veggie/vegan stuff. Can recommend the chickpea, sweet potato and spinach curry and the gammon.
