This cafe used to be known as ‘The Tollgate Cafe’, however, after the previous owners retired, it was bought out by the people who own & run ‘The Best Dressed Crab, a few hundred yards further down the beach, it is now known as ‘The Harbour View’. Sadly, what was once a cute, well managed & friendly café with very reasonable food, has now become a place with sometimes rude staff & extortionate prices. It’s still a lovely place to sit & watch the harbour from, but £2.00 for a can of Coke, no thank you, go elsewhere, I do now.

We mourn the passing of the old Tollgate Cafe. We always stopped there after dog walking or just driving back to Bembridge after a day out. “Coffee and a toasted tea cake please Trevor,” Served with a smile a bit of banter and friendly backchat from the locals. In the summer children would choose their ice creams, perhaps buy a fishing net and Mum would have tea and perhaps choose a souvenir or rummage through the books on sale for the Mountbatten Charity. The Tollgate was an institution and is sadly missed. The new owners of the renamed Harbour View have tried to accommodate demand by widening their menu and not just serving overpriced seafood, but something is missing. You just can’t replicate atmosphere and goodwill. Even the frontage is now so unwelcoming with the wooden fencing and concrete. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Regular lost visitors will be very hard to replace. I hope the wider menu and not just overpriced crab will attract customers back, but I fear once lost these will not return.

Never written a review before, decided to call in after a walk. Been warned it was expensive for what was on offer. The coffee was luke warm, virtually no choice of snacks, told what I could see was what there was. Choose croissants, they were served cold. Four luke warm coffees and four cold croissants £30 plus. We're a local family won't be going again, they're getting a poor reputation with the locals, let's see how they cope when the tourists have gone.

Stopped off here for Breakfast with the family and feel compelled to write a review in the hope that the owners may improve the service and quality of food being served. Waited a very long time between drinks and food being served. Admittedly it was busier than usual but approx 50 mins isn’t great for a simple breakfast menu. Food finally arrived, fried and poached eggs were almost raw, sausages were low quality and full of gristle, beans were cold, bacon not that great either. There’s an obvious improvement from when it was the Tollgate cafe in appearance but sadly, our experience of the breakfast menu wasn’t great so I hope future diner may benefit from this post

Now the Harbour View Cafe not Tollgate. You honestly will not taste better crab and prawns anywhere (well maybe at The Best Dressed Crab - which is part of The Harbour View Cafe). I agree that The old Tollgate Cafe was lovely but has now changed hands and what the new team offer is absolutely superb. Food 100% Customer Service 100%. Can't beat it.

Has been a staple Bembridge visit every time we have visited IOW and we come most years. Arrived today and it’s now the Harbour View Nothing here now for the children after a day on the beach, only chips at £3.20 and £2 a can for Coke. As for adults - £8.80 for a crab sandwich, gourmet Burger around £11 - too much for me. Can’t see locals coming here much at all. Understand now owned by the same people who have the floating fish restaurant- hence the almost exclusively fish menu. Will come back to Bembridge but doubt we will call in here like we used to. 4 grand children will miss the old Tollgate so much when they come next year. Am sure it will do well but no longer for us.

Allowing for Covid restrictions, this venue has certainly updated under new ownership, but not with service or presentation. The prices have blown out of all proportion and when the summer season is over, cannot see the locals patronising it during the winter months. At the moment, busy as ever. Table service is available after queing to order & pay at the door. Nice to see some of the original staff though. Such a shame, it used to be wonderful value.

£6 for a cheese sandwich! Cor blimey! The menu went like this. Fish sandwich, fish sandwich or fish sandwich with maybe a side of chips if you order our £6 cheese or fish sandwich. Shame because I had driven here thinking it was a good location to share with my other half not from the island. We got a bottle of water and left.

This lovely old fashioned seaside cafe has sadly gone. It has been given a drastic makeover by the owners of the best dressed crab, which is within shouting distance, and is now a trendy and expensive sea food restaurant. If you're looking for a toasted cheese sandwich, forget it. If your kids fancy a hot dog, they're out of luck. A simple milkshake? No way. There is now absolutely nowhere budget and family friendly for you to take your kids to on the Bembridge coast. This is utterly shameful and I mourn the passing of the Tollgate, along with many other locals and visitors alike. The tollgate was an iconic part of family holidays in Bembridge which has been ruined by change for change's sake.

Some people here have given bad reviews based on them not letting dogs inside, it's a small cafe and I totally agree with them not being allowed inside, there is plenty of space outside where many dog owners go. The Tollgate Cafe appeared at the right moment for me on my hike round the coast, as the rain was starting to soak through to my skin. I sat at a window, consuming a good cup of tea and a lovely big Eccles cake, gazing out at the view to the Duver spit across the mouth of Bembridge Harbour. The cafe was surprisingly busy for a relatively small shack affair, and there was a jolly atmosphere inside. The young man serving was friendly, and he kindly explained about the surrounding geography, the causeway, etc. If you're a coastal hiker, I'd suggest making a note of the Tollgate.

Very popular no-nonsense cafe (and for good reason!) Located by the water overlooking Bembridge harbour, the view is the jewel in the crown of this establishment. Dog-friendly outside, the tables fill up shortly after it opens, with regulars and tourists. Can't vouch for the food - but the coffee and hot chocolate we ordered was delicious. There's a nice selection of IOW souvenirs when you go inside to order too. Free parking next to the cafe, or a short drive down the path next to the car park where you are virtually on the beach. Lovely!

The Tollgate is an old-fashioned, no nonsense cafe. The interior is wonderfully quirky, with an interesting counter and display. They serve hot drinks, snacks or meals, although the menu might seem a little restricted for contemporary tastes. However, there should be something for almost everyone. When we visited the service was reasonable, although perhaps not as friendly as one would expect from a small, local business. Still, it was nice to sit outside on a warm day and take in the view of the harbour while enjoying our refreshments.

Lovely setting past the houseboats in Bembridge. Also was most impressed with their fundraising for our local Hospice - over £23,000! Chose this cafe, because we wanted a lunch with a view. The view was great, but sadly the food wasn't. We both had a pasty, which didn't have a lot of flavour and had too much pastry for the amount of filling. The salad that came with it was nice. We both had a mug of tea, which arrived with the milk already in. I don't like milk much and always just have a little drop, so this spoilt it for me. Most cafes give you milk to put in yourself. I noticed that the tea cakes came with the butter already on, which might be a problem for some people. We won't be returning, as there are better places to eat and drink with lovely views.

My wife, dog and I visited this cafe on 9/12/2018. My wife asked if we could come in with our dog and we were refused entry. We have lived on the IOW for just over a year now and have visited many cafes and pubs on the island. We have been made welcome at them all except one plus this one. Maybe if we had indisciplined children or we were obese smelly humans we would have been allowed in, but no we have a very well behaved, clean and trained dog. Off course there was maybe the option of sitting outside next to an individual who was puffing away on a stinking obnoxious vape. Any we did find somewhere more welcomming and were pleased to spend our money there.

We received a warm welcome from the owners. We sat outside and took in the great views of the harbour. One of the owners was feeding a pair of swans which was lovely to see up close. I love this old, ramshackled type, in need of a paint job looking place overlooking Bembridge Harbour, it's not fancy, it's not got the most comfortable seats, but it's just so cute & so English & I just love it.It's run by a couple of 'older' ladies who will happily chat away to you to their hearts content, the coffee/tea is great, as is the breakfast, the cakes are good too, there's a few seats out the back overlooking the harbour as well with the beach a very short 2 minute walk.Parking is somewhat limited with room for only 4/5 cars immediately out front, but a a few feet further along is more parking. It would be easy to dismiss this place & keep driving/walking by, don't go by looks alone, walk in, stop for a coffee & say hi.

Good local food! There was a huge variety of sandwiches, local crab etc., homemade bread pudding, bread and cakes. Nicely presented and quickly served. Overlooking the bay

Called while on holiday one morning. Asked if they did cooked breakfasts, and was told yes. Upon reading the menu, was puzzled, and felt compelled to ask....." could we have two bacon sandwiches please" as they were not on the menu. Bare in mind this is a cafe that advertises breakfasts! The owner told us they do not offer bacon......or fries eggs for that matter. Now I may be picking faults here...but I dont think so. A cafe...one that advertises breakfasts....should be selling bacon and fried eggs. Please...no comments about healthy eating. My choice and non of your business if you dont agree.

Rudest woman I've ever been served by, and a man who didn't seem to know what he was supposed tro be doing. The coffee was something else.....and I mean something else other than coffee!

I love this little Cafe, it's straight out of the 70's and frozen in time, It brings back happy memories of childhood holidays everywhere when I was a kid,It does decent food and the people are lovely, Especially the young blonde girl :)Right next to the car park entrance to one end of Benbridge beach, which is amazing for rock pools and crabs and exploring with the kids.Come here every time and pray The Tollgate will never change.Have Fun!

Found this place while going for an explore. All I will say about this place is, the views from the table more than made up for the slow - confused ordering process. Asked about the toilets as they were out of order, I was told the nearest loo was across the road, across the road are flats and houses, no toilets across the road opposite. Not good at directions me thinks.

Like a trip back in time, staff are very friendly, food is basic but very nice. Even had Bass shandy which I remember from my childhood! Staff gave the kids bread to go crabbing with.

It is like stepping back in time when visiting this little café. Asked for a bacon sandwich on a Sunday morning and left with cheese sausage and onion toasty. They don't do decent coffee either!

Lovely staff however a little slow and confused on service but we got there in the end.Selection of food for me personally was limited, but I know it would suit most so please don't see this as a negative as I am really fussy. Our party had toasted sandwiches, childrens meals and a ham salad. At first glance the prices can seem a little steep but believe me you certainly get a full plate full! The ham salad was extremely filling especially as I like my larger meals. The toasties looked delicious but they were finished before I had chance to nibble one.Coffee is the old fashioned milky style I love - hard to get these days.Well worth a visit, although I'd avoid busy times if you want something fast. Views are stunning so pick a nice day to sit outside.Note the nearest toilets are a hike across a busy blind bend - you have been warned.

We popped into The Tollgate cafe for a drink and a snack when we were staying in the area. It was like stepping back in time. There was a table of locals at the back nursing their teas. The eldely lady serving behind the counter got a little flustered with our order ( 2 teas and 2 toasted teacakes). A man came out the back and asked us what we wanted. There were numerous hand written signs and warnings dotted about the place which made us chuckle, We took our tea etc outside although Im sure there was a sign saying we couldnt take cups out to the beach but managed to get away with it! We came back inside as it had started to drizzle and drank our stewed tea listening to the locals. I'm sure theres a short story to be written about this place. If you like formica and stepping back in time then this is the place for you! Otherwise avoid like the plague

Excellent cafe with excellent views and excellent selection of food at very fair prices. The best milky coffee on the Isle of Wight.Great selection of gifts I recommend this cafe very much.Very helpful and friendly staff.I have read other people's reviews which are upsetting, maybe you do have to wait a little longer to get served but it is well worth the wait. You will not find a more peaceful spot to sit. Also the cafe is open 364 days of the year. What a service that is provided.I have been going to this cafe for over 20 years, same owners and excellent choice.

Came in to see a friend and left with a warm contented feeling, the place is warm and cozy and very friendly, but spacious enough to not be overbearing. The food is excellent and it has to be the best burger on the island hands down, it’s huge, full of flavour and seriously tasty, highly recommend the village inn

One of the best pub Sunday lunches we've had in several years. The meat was succulent - and if you can't choose beef or port you can have half and half. The potatoes were crunchily roasted with soft interior. The Yorkshire puddings seemed a step above most pub versions being neither greasy nor, like so many places, perfect roundels straight from a freezer. There wasn't much green veg but the kale - normally not something I like - was salty and well prepared. Great with the beautifully prepared red cabbage. Big shared portion of cauliflower cheese included too, and - on request - extra gravy and really tangy horseradish. Frankly not much to criticise here and the desserts were brilliant too. We had heard someone say that the change of ownership a week or so back had caused a drop in standards but it's hard to believe that it was ever much better than this. Highly recommended.
