Toby in South Tyneside

I don’t normally like writing a negative review but I feel I must on this occasion. On arrival we found out there was no ice cream, which was a disappointment to our granddaughter. Still could have ordered in blocks of ice cream. Darren was very welcoming, he booked the table that we asked for which was great. However the venue was stifling hot, many customers complaining. Chef was lovely, happy and cheerful, great with the children. However I must say the food was a huge disappointment, dried and very sparse. No broccoli, parsnips, sprouts as I was expecting. Was informed that these are only on at a weekend !! And it’s cheap enough !! Pasta very dried, food all over the front of the unit, which I wiped away. Ladies toilets were filthy. If it hadn’t of been for our grandchild we wouldn’t have bothered. Now this child loves her food. Even she said she didn’t like her food, (we made no comment about ours around her). Toby if you want customer’s to be happy with what you are producing you need to be doing better. Just look at your competition along the road !!! Will we be back, unfortunately not for food.

I Orderd a dinner to pick up online and upgraded the meats to £11.99 selection when I collected my order on 17.10.24 there was very little meat and was fatty also veg was only peas and carrots roasties 3 was Absolouly terribe so I called yous and was told should of served my own one I wasn’t given the option and two the person doing it should be doing there job correctly .. the girl on the phone was not intrested .. the dinner went in the bin so I contacted social media who give me a form to contact the manager and said I would hear in 3 days I Hurd nothing back then I recontacted social media who said she has sent all my details to the retail buisess manager and would hear back with in 3 days I’ve Hurd nothing from them either .. I feel like no one wants to take responsibility for this it’s now been 2 weeks today since the order I’ payed for a dinner that was Discusting and went in to the bin the customer service shocking from the girl on the phone that evening and the two managers who have not did there jobs .. I’m sure Toby’s company wouldn’t like a customer having a meal and waiting 2 weeks to be payed it’s the same situation I have payed for a meal that I wouldn’t even give my dog . I also have Xmas day lunch booked for me and my family and I realy have no confidence in tobys carvery after this experience so a think I’m going to have to cancel .. I also should not of had to keep chasing on line to speak with some one of management and now having no other option but to go public on this .. I’m very let down by how I have been treat and now face the reality of loosing deposits if I cancel my Xmas lunch and finding some where else in such short notice .. totally messed around

Staff were brilliant Sylvia was our waitress and she couldn’t do more for us speed of service was good and we never felt pressured to order our desserts to quickly after we had eaten, food was beautiful and the chef very chatty the cookie dough ice cream was gorgeous

Its a long time since i visited a Toby and was looking forward to "a traditional Sunday lunch " with my family. Also my son was visiting from the USA and he wanted to have a traditional carvery. First the all the venue is very much in need of a update and refurbishment. The toilet is dirty with a very rusty radiator. It seems the condition has been pointed out on previous reviews but no action has been taken. I found the selection of "so called " fresh veg very disappointing. According to Toby App i would have seen at least some of the following: Broccoli , Brussel Sprouts, green beans , parsnips -None . They had ran out of cabbage despite it only being 5.30. There was dreg ends of stuffing and macroni cheese left. (Since when did Marconi Cheese become part of traditional Sunday lunch. Maybe i am too old fashioned) also 4 separate potato dishes also Peas, carrots and Cauliflower cheese. Not exactly the "best seasonal veg" Considering Toby charge inflated price on a Sunday i would have expected better

Visited today and didn’t even eat my meal, food was so cold and watery. Table behind complained of same issue which we agreed with and the waitress tried to make excuses by the time people walk to the table it’s not hot, and apparently food was temperature checked, staff were rude. Went to the toilet and one of the staff implied food was not being paid for ? Very weird and very rude would never go here again after this experience

Friendly welcome and shown to our table, before we’d even sat down we were asked what we wanted to drink! I prefer to be comfortably seated before I’m asked! Couldn’t be given a drinks menu because they were being updated, not my problem they still should have had one!! Wasn’t asked if we wanted starters or anything else, just told to get carvery! At the carvery , the “chef”was very nice and friendly. As always with carvery you get good choice of meat and help yourself to the vegetables. Everything was well cooked , so no complaints!

The food was lovely and my little girl lived the chicken nuggets would definitely recommend this place and all staff were friendly

The breakfast was absolutely freezing cold. We brought this to the attention of the staff, who temperature checked it and said it was fine. It wasn’t it, I’ve had hotter ice cream. No offer of a refund or discount. Toilets were absolutely scruffy, we would never visit here again! Steer clear.

Terrible Sunday lunch mashed potato was lumpy had chunks of raw potato with black bits in could taste that it wasn't cooked. Turnip was also lumpy other veg had no taste the meat was the only thing that was just okay. £31 for two disgusting dinners and a small coke and a soda water a total waste of money so will certainly not be going back again.

I would rate it 0 if I could. Terrible staff, who were rude and bad mannered. Not the place it used to be, too focused on selling cheap meat and vegetables that belong in the bin.

Terrible night, place was empty, no atmosphere. Staff were moaning about shift patterns, not welcoming in the slightest, looking at watches as wanted to leave to go home. One staff member used bad language. Hospitality at it's worst. Won't be back. Toilets manky.

Visited Toby Carvery Yesterday for Sunday Lunch with the Hubby. We booked a table inadvance incase it was busy. It was very busy but we got our table. The carvery was lovely. Beef, Turkey, Pork & Gammon to choose from & assortment of Vegetables from Carrots & Cauliflower to Sprouts, red cabbage & peas. Along with roasties , mash & Giant Yorkshire Puddings. Total cost with two refillable drinks was £34. Delicious meals, will definitely go back

Been a few times before but getting worse. Went on Sunday with husband for breakfast. I went to to make some toast while my husband waited in the queue for his cooked breakfast and when I came back to our table he was waiting a while then came back to the table quite annoyed and said they were all waiting for fried eggs but the cook was coming out with 6 on a plate but then started to put them all in the take a way boxes while people waited. I went to go and get my breakfast as there was no one waiting, they had no tomatoes, the sausages where either well done or burnt so I looked around the dish for 1 sausage and then went to get some bacon, once again this was either well done or burnt so tried to look for a couple of bits that I could eat, went to get a hash brown but full of grease so did not get one and then I waited for a fried egg, I had to ask a lady and she said they are coming, so waited another 5 mins and finally came out, the lady kept a hold of the plate of eggs so I could not pick my own so just put one on my plate as she once again put the rest of the eggs in the take a way boxes, once I got to my table I could not eat the egg or bacon as it was too over cooked so ended up having toast, the waitress came over and asked if we were finished and I said yes and that it was the worst breakfast I have ever had, she said well, you should have complained to the manager as she walked away then she was really nice to the people who sat behind us and one of them said, well our breakfast was lovely, if that was the case how come all their plates had a lot of left over food on them . Sorry but we wont be back.

Toby Carvery Cleadon is a really good place to eat we booked a table but you can walk in the meat on offer was really tender and tasty the vegetable selection fantastic. Our sever was really pleasant and polite and engaged with us a few times during our meal. The atmosphere is pleasant too.

This friday (20th) was much busier than usual, but the 2 ladies serving and the chefs battled through gamely. Very impressed with everyone on duty this breakfast shift. Thanks for a lovely morning.

Fancied a carvery and as we hadn't been for years decided on this Toby. Wish we hadn't bothered. Plates were grubby and the first three I picked up to pass to the meat person were filthy. Said meat person was miserable and uniform needed a wash. Food looked like it had been threw into the pots and as much as I tried I couldn't find a whole roast potato, they were all in bits. Vegetables I thought were sparse no turnip or broccoli and meat was chewy and inedible. Yorkshire puddings were excellent though but shame gravy was tasteless. Sticky toffee pudding was a square of cheap cake probably out of the freezer no custard but pouring cream was offered. Service however was fantastic from the floor staff, so friendly and helpful. But it's a definite no from me. I know what a good carvery tastes like and this is definitely not it

Excellent service by friendly staff in particular server Patricia who looked after 2 elderly ladies with patience and humour .It was a most enjoyable meal.

vegan options have changed , and didn't even have the only vegan option available apart from salad no vegan desserts on the menu

This Toby Carvery is in desperate need of cleaning and refurbishment. Feels grubby and dated. The toilets are terrible,especially the disabled/baby changing one which opens directly onto tables of diners (I would not like to sit there to eat) and is dark and dingy also dated and dirty. On a positive note the food was ok and the meat server was very pleasant and friendly. We ordered desserts , brownie arrived without the strawberries stated on the menu. The crumble was accompanied by less that half a jug of custard. When we asked “is that all of the custard” she replied “yeah it’s shocking isn’t it “. (Carolyn). I must also say that she was rather brusque, especially when I questioned the bill. When the bill arrived I was surprised to see that the child’s Carvery without dessert is the same price as Carvery with dessert! This needs stating on the menu. Maybe as child’s Carvery £6.99 and dessert free! Very misleading. Think twice about going to this Toby Carvery as it is well below standard.

Went in on the off chance we could get a table for 5 of us. All the staff were very pleasant the guy behind the deck was very chatty and asked us about our day and was great with the kids. We had Christina serving us and we couldn’t fault her it was quite busy but she was very attentive and professional. We were never left sitting around waiting. Couldn’t fault a thing Thank you

The food is good, no complaints at all there. The place is very tired tho. The gents toilets are really manky and in desperate need of a refurbishment. The whole place could do with revamp. The Britt years ago used to be a great pub, its gone right back.

I am absolutely disgusted to have received a parking fine of £85 for having lunch and following all the icar parking instructions to avoid been charged. Seems it doesn't really work, I will never set foot in a Toby again. I can't fathom why you have the system in the first place, it's not like you are city centre, close to a sports stadium etc! The service is also rubbish, I burnt my hand and your cook laughed! Perhaps you buy napkins to put out for people to use to avoid burning there hands with my £85 charge!?

They only done a carvery which I don't really like If they done the salad on the picture I would have ordered one the turkey was chewy my grand son ordered beef but it was the first cut off the joint so it was all fat and gristle my friend was up from Worthing on sea he asked if he could have beef and a slice of ham he said yes but he would have to take a slice of beef off his plate the Yorkshire puddings looked nice but you would have broke your teeth on them

Quick, friendly, and comfortable. Emily, Mark, and Phil were all great. My order arrived swiftly, the Yorkshire wrap was fresh, and the portion size was more than enough.

Went in early evening, although it was busy there was a great atmosphere and everyone seemed to be working hard but still had smiles on their faces. We were served by Christina and couldn’t fault her service she was dealing with a few bigger bookings at the same time but still had time to check back on our food and even offer us puddings we even got the bill in a timely manner.
