Extremely disappointed! We were met by a very rude member of staff, I felt we were in her way rather than paying customers. We had the carvery. Nice choice of meat but very poor choice of vegetables due to running out of some items like the roast parsnips. The roast potato's were dreadful and inedible. The peas were rock hard, the cauliflower cheese was undercooked too. And the pigs in blankets were the most expensive I've ever eaten and not worth the money. We won't be going back ever again.

All staff bar one - meat server are all great, it’s a shame that one member of staff with an unpleasant attitude can spoil the experience Management & staff apologetic for his behaviour and I was told he “ be spoken to “ from other reviews I see this rudeness is a recurring theme here I complained to the Toby Inn head office and received an automated unsigned reply so they clearly are not interested in customers , little wonder the service is poor

Ordered a roast dinner through the too good to go app. Got it home and it was awful. Tiny amount of meat and veg, no roast potatoes, Yorkshire’s or chipolatas. A child’s portion at best and certainly not what I would call a roast. It was a portion of meat and a small amount of veg. Certainly wouldn’t order from them this way again. I bought three! Such a mistake.

I enjoyed Christmas Dinner today at Toby Carvery in Exeter and couldn't have asked for a better experience. Every course was delicious and perfectly cooked, I was given generous servings of freshly cooked and carved turkey and roast beef, with vegetables that were cooked just right. My server Josie was friendly, gracious, and attentive -- checking frequently that I had all I needed. I was unable to spend Christmas with family in London (due to lockdown) but Josie made me feel very welcome as if I were a guest in her home. The meal was highly enjoyable and an excellent value. I should also add that Toby Carvery spaced their tables well and used room dividers to allow for covid precautions and I felt that my safety as a customer was well taken care of even though there were a number of guests present. I highly recommend Toby Carvery Exeter and will look forward to dining there again!

I went to the Toby Carvery in Exeter with my boyfriend on 13th September for a Sunday roast. In comparison with the Terrace from last weekend, this was miles better. The beef was lovely and lean and the Yorkshire puddings were very nice. However, some of the vegetables were cold and the potato was extremely bland. If the vegetables were hotter and the potato was nicer I could have pushed the rating up to a 4. I could go again but it wouldn’t be my first choice.

Went for our first carvery since lockdown, looking forward to a nice carvery. Sadly the potatoes were almost inedible, the skins were very hard and they were very dry. There was no pork available (waitress informed us that the their supplier could not provide it). the beef was very tough, and overall the flavour of the meal was not up to its usual standard. The server gave the impression that he would rather be somewhere else! Won't be returning any time soon. the only positive was our waitress who did her best in an awkward situation.

Been here today with family for breakfast. Food was nice and hot. Booked a table because of the covid situation rather than just turn up. However when arrived it was just grab a table and sit wherever! Noone to take you to your table. It was a bit of free for all, no social distancing happening. I find that hard to get in these unpredictable times. I would not go back here for breakfast because of this reason however week before went for carvery and have no complaints at all

As we were shopping and seeing as it was lunchtime, we popped into a Toby Carvery in Exeter. The waitress was very polite and showed us to our table where apon we ordered drinks and our meal. My husband decided to have a carvery and I had an Advocado, Bacon, Turkey salad. After a short wait, my meal arrived where apon the presentation of my salad was indescribable (see picture). On taking a mouthful it was totally inedible and to be honest, it looked and tasted like something our cat had sicked up!. No evidence of any turkey or bacon in it and it was saturated in French dressing. This is our last visit to a Toby.

We came here for lunch, 5 of us, hoping for a nice meal after travelling up from Swindon the same day. We were seen by a young girl and gave our orders clearly & promptly. We ordered a lot of food and initially joked to the waitress about how she will remember our order without writing it down - she assured us she will remember. We were then told there would be a 20 minute wait for the food but we were okay with this as we had our drinks and starters. 25 minutes later we recieved only 2 plates- 15 minutes later (by this point the two family members had finished their food) 2 other plates arrived. ANOTHER 15 minutes later the final dish arrived....totally unacceptable that there was a 30 minute gap between receiving our food. Upon asking for an explanation from our waitress, she admitted she had forgotten the order and we were not even offered an apology. When the last plate was received it was inedible, meat was tough and the meat was drowned in cheese sauce. The manager was drab, much like a wet lettuce and did not install any confidence in us that he was sorry. Ultimately the place is a sh*t dump, dont waste your money here.

I've been to the Toby a few times now for one of their "all you can eat breakfasts" It seems to be a hit & miss affair depending on what time you eat. Midway through service, the food was lovely (9am) but on the past 2 occasions I have been up later & had a breakfast at 10am. Both times the eggs were either ready to bounce out of the dish they were so hard & dry or they had completely run out & I had to wait around for one. Staff seem a little in short supply as the 2 that were around were so run of their feet I felt for them. Lack of kitchen staff also seemed to be the case, hence not being on top of what was really needed on the food counter instead of bringing out additional dishes which weren't required. Might also be a good idea if staff were trained to remove food from service if it looks like it's been on the counter too long (ie: friend eggs} instead of moving them onto the plate of new ones... They were left because they were not edible!!! Overall, breakfasts were good, just the niggly bits that need to be sorted out.

Recently we have been so disappointed with Toby that we have gone elsewhere out of policy. All I can say is “what a difference a few months can make” the service was excellent, greeted warmly as we walked in, served by a gentleman who clearly cares about the service he delivers. The place had been revamped and very clean now, the waiting and kitchen staff were well on the ball for the buffet breakfast, we and others were wanting for nothing. The buffet breakfast was well stocked all the time from what I could see the quality and quantity was excellent tasted wonderful.Pricing for food was very good, drinks still a little on the high side.Rest rooms clean and well maintained.Well done for turning this place around, we will be back soon.Date of visit 26th Jan 2016

The pub itself is reasonably comfortable to sit and have a pint in, although there are far better options available. Like most people I was there for the carvery. The food looked OK, and there was plenty of it, but on closer inspection it leaves a lot to be desired. The stuffing was the most tasteless I've ever had, it was remarkably bland. My biggest gripe was that the gravy, which I had poured all over my food, was burnt. This meant the entire meal was ruined. It's just not good enough. These days you expect better than this. I did complain and had a discount. But I won't be a returning customer, there are far better options available. The whole place seems very dated, and is in need to a revamp.

We have been here a number of times in the last couple of years, one of the main things you notice is the reducing number of staff, it`s almost a joke now, what do they expect other than poor customer service if you do not have people. Many staff have no command of English or speak with a strange accent, I find asking them to repeat what they just said for a third time is just embarrassing , can they not find anyone local to work for them. A company is made of its employees; this reduction in recent months is telling us something big is going to happen to Toby soon. The food was not bad given the environment the few remaining staff have to work with, the carvery was topped up most of the time, so could not complain there. The decor is very dirty and worn, needs a full refit, it was not pleasant sitting on filthy sticky seats and using dirty tables, some staff members are clearly carrying the lazy members or maybe they are just exhausted with the workload.Wash rooms were ok, one blocked sink, that’s been like that on and off for a year or more.Price of food is good, drinks are where they make up for it £1.99 for a cup of tea... really !All in all this place is OK if you are happy with a work mans cafe

On the way home from holiday in Devon decided to have the 'Eat all you can' breakfast at this Toby. Beware!! 'Eat all you can for £3.99' means just that. Drinks are extra and so breakfast plus orange juice and tea meant £7.98. Was handed a cup with something yellow (but I believe dead) in it. When I asked for a clean cup, the person behind the bar looked horrified - horrified that is that I dare ask such a question. So to the hot (NOT) offering. Firstly I can't understand why anyone would want a Yorkshire pudding with gravy for breakfast. Most of the food was overcooked (the bacon a mix of over and under cooked but sitting in a pool of fat). No fresh grilled or fried tomatoes, just straight from the tin. Left half of it and thought I'd make it up with toast and marmalade. The rotating platform on the toaster seemed to throw every other piece on the floor (nothing to stop it at the back). Eventually obtained two half toasted pieces of bread (one side toasted the other only slightly), got the butter then looked for the marmalade. Plenty of blackcurrant and also strawberry jam but no marmalade on display. Asked a member of staff and was told they' run out!! WHAT!!! A (supposedly) major food player not able to provide marmalade for breakfast. The inside of the establishment looked run down, the area at the back worse. However, I did key it into my sat nav - AS SOMEWHERE TO AVOID IN FUTURE.

Arrived at 3.05pm on Monday 6th October. Waited 10 minutes at the carvery counter, no staff at all evident or around so had to go into the kitchens to try and find the chef! Turns out there is just one chef and one table server on after 3pm on a Monday, or so they complained to me. The chef that served us was surely, uncommunicative, and very much on edge. The few diners there were I could hear moaning about the length of time puddings were taking, 30 minutes plus and then the order was wrong when it finally came to their table. Our carvery food was cold and chewy with barely enough meat carved for a small child, and the dishes looked like they were standing under the heat lamps for way too long, just a lot of dishes with just a small amount of wilted vegetables sitting within. Even the decor looked well past its sell by date with cracked and crumbling plaster around the exit doorway. There seems so many things wrong with this Toby right down to basic organisation skills with the magnetic knife holder cited directly over the behind the counter tiled floor area, where dripping grease could easily cause a health and safety risk to staff.

Not only did we have to wait 10 minutes to be seated as the staff were chatting at the bar (told to wait 2minutes whilst they continued) then once seated we had to wait a further 30 minutes for a drink or food order to be taken... (One couple sat behind me ordered a bottle of wine with their meal which they finished by the time it got to them) the manager had to take our order because the staff were nowhere to be seen! Food was nice once it arrived but the staff were rude and short fused with many customers. Dirty cutlery and the Carvery chefs kept disappearing leaving the station unmanned! All in all - you get what you pay for - cheap food and cheap service... Many complaints made during our visit.

We went for breakfast. It was 9.40 on a Sunday. You have to pay at the bar. There was about 12 people in the queue and it took until just past 10am to pay. Fed up already, but then it gets worse. The queue for the food was just as bad. Once at the front, there was no plates. Then there was no eggs. I handed the voucher in for 2 portions of mushrooms. Only one was provided. The sauce was empty and hadn't been replenished. Then there's the same queue for toast, but also there was only crusts left and no bread. Eventually at 10.25, a massive 45 minutes after getting there, we were eating our breakfast. I had lost by appetite by then and went for some coffee, of course....the coffee pot was empty.!! I may as well have gone to a cafe and been waited on. It would have been less time and less hassle.

Was recommended the carvery by family, though at nearly £10 it was a bit steep for the type of venue and the quality of the food. Staff were friendly and had to wait 25 minutes for a table which was right by the que, asked to swap but told would have to go back at the end of the waiting list! Food was fairly good and hot, meat portion not too generous and stuffing was like packet stuffing, apart from that potatoes were lovely and everything else was fairly good but nothing to write home about. Would I go back. I don't think so

We have always liked Toby Caveries and this was just as good. The staff we very helpful and friendly. The only downside was we were seated near the food station so it was quite hot. The food was very well cooked and replenished very quickly.

This is the Toby at Middlemoor roundabout. The sign said all you can eat breakfast for £3.99, but beware, that is only the baseline price, you soon add extra for things like juice and mushrooms. Our breakfast ended up costing us over £6 each! Food was good though.

This is my local Toby and have been here many times over the years. The food is good value for money and has always been good, a little more meat would be better but it is the same in all these type of places. They do give the option of going king size which gives you a bit more meat for not much more money. The staff have always been helpful and look like they want to be there, not like some of the places where I have been. It is nearly always full and often have to wait for a table unless you say you will eat at the bar end of the place then you can usually eat straight away. I would say that sometimes the food could do with being a bit hotter but that is my preference as I like my food really hot. I have been to many Toby's and find this one to be the best.

Whilst visiting Exeter the other day we decided to try the "All You Can Eat" Toby Breakfast. The entrance to the car park took us to the Tradesman Entrance which is where we thought the Car Park was. Not only had we parked in he wrong car park, there were no signs indicating where the entrance to the Restaurant was. Once we had found the entrance we entered what is in fact a very run down Toby. We ordered at the Bar and were sent to the Dining Room which was quite busy. Whilst there were empty tables, none had been cleared (in fact, we were there for 45 minutes, and not one dirty table was cleared whilst we were there). The food was horrible! The fried eggs were "hard boiled", the bacon over-cooked, the sausage skins tough, cold baked beans, undercooked tomatoes and cold potatoes. They ran of toast, and when it was replenished the bread was still frozen! The worst breakfast we have ever had.

I can only imagine that previous reviewers who have raved about this place have a low threshold of what is acceptable.Firstly front of house. If the areas the public see are that dirty, what are the kitchens like? Any chef that goes into the public areas should be wearing cleanish whites. Table was dirty, cutlery dirty, paper napkin looked like it had a previous owner. Almost everywhere was either dirty or shabby. Queued for the carvery next to a dirty bin and a table full of dirty glasses. The food. The goods points first. My gammon wasn't bad, not salty as some have mentioned, but I have had a lot lot better at carverys at £8-10 a head. The cranberry sauce was nice. There it ends I am afraid. I left my Yorkshire 'pancake'. Who knew you could make gravy that thick and gloopy. Must have been the tons of salt in it that gave it body. Somebody else previously didn't like the gravy either as they had tried to hide theirs inside the wine list. What is the white sauce stuff on the cauliflower?, it had no discernible flavour. You may fool some people by putting paprika on the cauliflower to make it looked like it has baked in an oven, but I am afraid I have been around the block too many times to fall for that one. 'Roast' potatoes, the clue is in the title, they should be roasted otherwise they would be called 'boiled and then deep fried' potatoes. Rest of the veg was standard fare. Would rather save up my pennies and go somewhere better less often.

We arranged to meet friends for an 11.00 am breakfast at Toby's, having heard excellent reports. Arrived to find that they finish serving at 11.00. All the stops were pulled out so we could still eat, though. They held off clearing away, were incredibly helpful in organising drinks, cutlery, ketchup etc. then kept checking we were OK.. So friendly. In the meantime the breakfast food was being cleared for what looked like an amazing carvery. Yorkshire puddings you could roll in. We are definitely going back for another breakfast (and at £3.99 why wouldn't we?) and, next time, will probably stay for the carvery! What a fantastic place, and it's been down the road all this time.

I have been to Toby carvery's before and commented on the severe lack of meat. Well this seems to be a problem in all of them. I realise meat is expensive but I got two of the thinnest slices you could imagine, in fact I swear I could see through the turkey slice! Next time I will go vegetarian and save a couple of quid, because the amount of meat you get really isn't worth the extra you pay. However the vegetables were excellent. Oh, and how can my orange juice and lemonade cost over double what my husband paid for his alcoholic drink? That is shocking!

Funny smell in the bar area smelt like drains...Saturday completely different experience, warm welcome for breakfast, full cooked breakfast eat as much as you like coffee not so good very bitter.. Saturday evening staff very pleasant and hospitality very good, ate in the restaurant staff very good throughout. Chilled in the room later on and watched a film, room standard but clean and comfortable, no wifi in rooms which was a pain.. Hie ever location was ok for what we needed.. We visited here as a family of four. It was the first Sunday of half term and it was extremely busy. Luckily we had phoned ahead to say we were on our way and we were put into a waiting list for a table.Upon arrival we were taken to our table fairly quickly. We all ordered the carvery. Although busy and a long queue, the carver was swift to get through the long queue of people. Food was delicious and would recommend.

The carvery is very good value at £5.99, 4 meats on offer and plenty of vegetables. Busy early evening which probably helped keep a regular turnover of fresh food, rather than the soggy veg and dry met that you can find elsewhere. Waiting were cheerful, chef was'nt very welcoming - did'nt speak to anyone as far as could see.Would go again.

it was our first time at this carvery restaurant and were very impressed,we hadn't booked as we didn't think we needed to as in between xmas and new year we thought people would be fed up with food, well it was full.we were not turned away we could wait up to an hour or sit in the function room ,so we chose the function room.we sat there talking and drinking and time flew,we got up to get our carveries and saw an empty table in the bar,so we moved.the function room was great though for a party but as there was only 7 of us we felt a bit lost.we maxed up our carveries for the extra sausage and yorkshire pud ,wow never seen such biguns.lovely meal proper spuds and all the veg was fresh and hot .we had a 20 % voucher too which i believe you can still get available till begining of feb.it was good value anyway.the 20% is only valid certain days.the puds were good too ,and the cokes were refillable free too .going again this week .

We came here yesterday ,chose it basically as we were all coming from different directions and there was a car park. The organisation was pretty awful, waitresses look tired and uniforms were very unat tractive,i found the chef wandering round in his very tatty dirty whites very off putting. When we had eventually worked out the system i found the veggy option then later found it was off the menu,so i settled for a Broccoli and Brie bake in pastry. Not good. How can you all go up to the carvery to get meal and leave all your belongings unattended.??After saying this My Brother said his roast was very tasty and so did another family member.the place was quite busy sat lunchtime but its quite nr rugby ground it seemed to cater for children .Yes place desperately needs money spent on it,including toilets and menu and uniform,

Don't expect the finest quality of food when you visit the Toby carvery - because it's not the best, but the variety and quantity is good. The food is very good value - especially if you visit midweek, and avoid Sundays. They always have at least two vegetarian options to choose from (in place of the meat) which are usually tasty and filling. Their Brie and Brocolli parcel is a particular favourite of mine, but last time I tried their new Lentil Shepherd's Pie (which is also vegan) and this was good too. The veggie mains are usually enough for 2 people to share, so one of us will often get veg only, and the other will order the veggie option. The Yorkshire puddings are odd - not like traditonal ones, but they're ok. I particularly like the fact that they provide vegetarian gravy. The quality of the vegetables can be variable, but there's usually plenty of choice. I love buffets, and I always feel well fed when I leave here!

The carvery was quite tasty although suffered from being kept warm. the skins on the roasters were a bit tough the yorkshires a bit flat, more like a pancake, and the veg a bit tired. The meat was very nice but I have never seen it cut so thin and such a small amount. For £5.99 I expected a reasonable amount. I know it's a bit cheaper than most pub carvery s and this is a chain, but for that amount of meat I think £3.99 would be more appropriate. I thought it was very poor, there is no need for them to be so mean with the meat and for that reason I would not go there again, which is a shame. personally I wonder if this is done on purpose to encourage you to pay another £1.50 for extra meat, but then at £7.49 I would rather go elsewhere. I think the management have got this wrong. They have lost my custom, along with my friends and I suspect a lot more disgruntled customers. If you want a good carvery go somewhere else, even if it costs a little more, it will be worth it.

My parents had a carvey and I ordered a chicken ceser salad. My parents sat at their table with their dinner and I had to wait up to 25 minutes for mine to arrive. We then returned for breakfast the next day and it was a disgrace. No one greeted us on our arrival. The breakfast was cold. And the plates were filthy dirty. It looked like that someone had their breakfast on the same plate and it was scraped of and put back for the next person to use. I would never return to that Toby Carvery.
