Friendly staff, you need to download the app to order food. I was too hot inside, it wasn’t a cold day so a little too cosy for me. I think you can tell the standard of a place by the toilets and these weren’t good. The toilet doors do not fit and once I’d slammed it shut I struggled to get it open. Wasn’t really clean and smelt a bit in the corridor. Food itself was ok but £11 for a BLT I thought was expensive - it came with vegetable crisps but apart from that was just a sandwich. The fish sandwich was bigger and a pound cheaper.

Virkelig hyggeligt sted med fantastisk atmosfære. Vi kom bare for at få en drink. Der var ikke noget drinkskort og der var flere ting, som vi ikke kunne få. Det var skuffende. Tror det vil være et godt sted til frokost. Mulighed for at sidde ude. Ville være fantastisk i godt vejr

We were welcomed by Tia when we arrived at the double locks with a lovely smile. Tia was extremely helpful and very chatty and friendly, she has a lovely way of making you feel special. It was an absolute pleasure to visit the pub and we had a delicious lunch of fish and chips. One of the best fish and chip lunches we have had over many years of touring our beautiful country. Perfectly situated by the lock for a restful lunch and a sit in the sunshine after lunch. Yes it’s a little tricky to find your way there but stick to what the satnav says and you will be pleased you were brave enough to venture that far down the tow path. Well done

We had a business get together and decided we wanted to do a sort of BBQ (because it was late in the year we had burgers cooked inside) we had a selection of chicken and beef burgers. They were amazing, the chips were crispy and the coleslaw was amazing (just a shame i couldn't eat more of it) The correspondence i had with Tim was spot on and was very reassuring, they took control of everything. Will definitely be back but in the summer next year.

Good food good selection of beers and of course being in Devon a fantastic cider range food is locally sourced and beautiful. I would say it’s a nice little walk from marsh Barton train station across the bridge and down the canal definitely recommend the staff are friendly and happy to help where needed. All pet friendly and the vast beer garden is great also

On our way home from a day in Exeter, we decided to walk to this pub by the canal for a pint. It is a favourite for bikers and walkers with the cycle path in close proximity. I don't think it has changed since my last visit, probably 8 years ago, having cycled here with the kids in tow. Nice pint of Ferrymans real ale and very tranquil sitting alongside the canal with the numerous birds close by. It could do with some TLC both inside and out....and for a lovely late afternoon, it was strangely quiet and deserted.

A wonderfully pretty restaurant situated on the local canal. Plenty of seats, indoors or outdoors along the canal, were available at 19:00 on a Saturday, although booking was easy and recommended. We ordered online through the app, which provided options for dietary restrictions. Our meals arrived within 20-30 mins which was just enough time to enjoy the view and sunset. The food itself was incredible. The sausages would have made a butcher smile, and the chips we ordered were tasty and of great quantity. All aspects of our respective meals (Cumberland sausages and chips, burger and chips, and a starter of olives) were amazing and we’d happily return again soon. My only concern was that the menu had lots of greyed-out items on an already short-ish menu and so there weren’t too many options. This was not an issue as it turned out since what we ordered exceeded all expectation. Final note: Big cars might find it difficult to enter from the north as there is a small, almost walking-sized bridge, for cars to cross only minutes from the restaurant.

We've been coming to this pub for years, such a lovely location so near to the city. Came for lunch on a Monday. Staff were friendly. However, there was a long wait in the drinks queue at the bar, then to discover they were out of draft beer (2 people in the queue decided to leave as they couldn't wait any longer). Again long wait to order food, but it did arrive fairly quickly and was tasty and nicely cooked. We had children with us and were really disappointed that there is now no play area. Also, I'm a dog lover but dogs were barking in the bar area which made it quite difficult to place any orders and to relax. We decided to sit outside on the raised decking by the canal and on returning to our seats found that a dog had pooped on the decking by our chairs, so had to move. You can't blame the pub for this, it's down to the owners, but it was unpleasant. Even so, had a nice time in the sunshine and will be returning.

It's just poorly managed with, what seems to me, poor staff attitude being behind the demise. The last time we went it was a beautiful sunny bank holiday weekend. The type of day where they should be looking to thrive, but no food, beer off, dirty plates, bad service. Staff meandering around chatting whilst tables were full of empty plates and glasses. We went back a couple of times over the summer, each time really hoping that the previous bad experience was a one off... but no. Every time greeted with staff who were at times out right rude, with an attitude I have come to expect from trendy bars in London, not family friendly pubs in Exeter. I Used to go to the Double Locks a lot when I lived in the are. And it was so good that it became a centre piece of Exeter tourism, featuring as a great waypoint for boat, bike and canoe trips, from the harbour. So disappointing.

A lovely pub by the canal for a spot of food and chill. We stopped by for lunch snack , watch some football and entertain kids. Only issue was that with one bar area for food queue built up and table order app was not working. It got busy and at one point could no longer take a good order even if we were happy to wait for slow delivery, so we ended up having to leave to grab desert snack for kids elsewhere. Would be amazing in sunny weather as has a nice big yard with lots of table space but also hosts event/wedding function so kitchen can become busy and orders backup

Beautiful setting to sit out on the locks and lots of tables provided but why does the app not let you order any drinks other than coffees prior to 12pm? Couldn’t even get a juice or a fizzy drink. Had a very anxious dog with us and when the waitress came over to serve our coffees, we asked if she would kindly get a glass of water (as we couldn’t order it) and she said we needed to go to the bar. Consequently the dog starts barking as one of us is leaving. When I get to the bar, there were no glasses for the water and the water was right by the peanuts. As someone with a severe nut allergy, this is ridiculous and they should be kept behind the bar as to stop contamination. On leaving, we tried to use the outdoor toilets so we didn’t upset the dog as much as possible and even in the height of summer the outdoor toilets were not open and we were told we would have to go inside. Absolute joke and staff wholly unhelpful and not a smile in sight. Very disappointed as last time we came this place was exceptional.

Went for lunch today and ordered some Salt and pepper squid and a portion of truffle fries. They arrived and the fries were cold and the squid looked super anaemic but was tough as boot leather. Requested that it was re cooked . They obliged and then brought it out to us. Again the fries were only luke warm and the squid once again was very pale but didn’t touch it as there was a thick black hair on the plate under the squid. Told the staff and then asked for a refund of our food which was given. Left straight away and won’t be returning any time soon.

Lovely location, which is the only reason to go there as both the food and service are well below average unfortunately. A poor experience. To add the detail requested by the location. Ordered drinks via the app they took 15 minutes to come, even though it was very quiet with most tables empty. My daughter's j20 came with no straw or glass, which I had to ask for, we were bought a plastic pint glass (daughter is 13), with a little bit of ice swimming in water, where it had been added with zero care. Food came, ham, egg and chips were okay, eggs over cooked, greens cold and broccoli undercooked (not al dente). Fish sandwich, bread was dry, fish tiny, overcooked, and the smallest smearing of tartare sauce ever, plus vegetable crisps were stale. Ham and cheese sandwich, bread again dry, filling was generous, but the thickness of the cheese was comical, Tesco sell it in smaller lumps! Kids sausage, chips and peas were okay, sausages were overcooked and greasy, but seemed like they had once been good quality. Chips overall were fine, typical frozen chips, not the triple cooked chips they were billed as. No one checked on our meal. Finally, when ordering you are asked to tip the staff if you enjoyed ordering via the app, which is a laughable notion, I will always tip good service and food, which unfortunately this wasn't, I will never tip beforehand, and this is a perfect demonstration of why.

Had heard good things about this dog friendly place, so we booked a table for 2.30 for 6. It's quite a challenging place to get to by vehicle. Once we negotiated the non wheel chair friendly entrance and exit to the outside area, where despite a reservation, it was free for all for seating for us, yet other tables had reserved by names on them. There was also a private event going on with loud music and large sections unaccessable. It was explained by the staff that the kitchen was on "pause" for a short period to catch up. So we viewed the menu and after a while I went to place drinks and food order. This is when I was told that the kitchen was no longer serving any food at all. Nothing. So despite booking a table in advance, we were left with no other option but to leave at 3pm and search for a place for food with 3 pensioners , one of which was in a wheelchair and had a dog. What completely disgusting customer service, we weren't walk in's, but we had booked in advance. Abhorrent chain pub with zero care or customer service! AVOID! AVOID!AVOID!

This was the worst dining experience of my life. Had booked a table for a group for lunch, and were promised that the outside catering (bbq, burger van) would be operating in addition to the main kitchen. Arrived to discover that only the main kitchen was operating, and all that was being served was Sunday lunch - not really what you want on a hot day in June. Were then informed that no orders were currently being taken and we’d have to wait 30mins to order. Were eventually allowed to order, but then 15min later someone came from the kitchen to inform us half of our order was unavailable. After some chaotic back-and-forth, with staff giving mixed messages about what alternatives were available, we were eventually able to order some alternative food. This eventually started to arrive another 30mins later (1hr 15min after our booking time), but the final members of our group were not served for an hour (almost 2 hours after we arrived). The food that was served was largely inedible - in particular the potatoes which were so hard they couldn’t even be cut with a knife and fork! If you’re only going to offer a very limited menu, there’s really no excuse for it also being terrible. After much complaining, the pub agreed to refund some of the meals and provided some complimentary drinks, but this didn’t really make up for ruining our day.

We had our wedding at the Double Locks and can honestly say that the day was perfect. We were able to book the day before to invite our guests to help set up and meet each other. When we arrived the day after for the wedding reception we brought our guests down on the ferry and this just added something extra for them. The food was amazing, we had a lot of comments on how nice the burgers were for the BBQ option and the buffet platters that came out later flew off the tables as well. Everything about the day was so relaxed and easy for us as the bride and groom, the staff went above and beyond for us and our guests and everything we needed was there. Such a beautiful venue! I would highly recommend for the perfect spring/summer wedding experience.

Visited here with some friends on Sunday lunch. It was extremely busy with lots of customers coming in out of the rain. We had the Sunday roast. Decent portion size but i think we hit a crunch point at peak time i.e 1.30pm, and the food quality was variable on our table with some dishes cold and others hot, and differences in quantity/quality of meat. The app was not working so had to queue to order food. Would come again but at a different time of day when less busy.

Over priced, run down, average food Plenty of customers but they never seem to invest in the place Your basically paying for the surroundings… and not sure what’s going on with the loos

Sweet baby Jesus the crab sandwich was awful. It was as if a seagull had regurgitated its crab catch into a stale baguette lined with a tasteless sliced tomato. They threw in a deep fried soggy soft shell crab on top, I assume that was for distraction. The venue remains amazing the food poor. TBF the burger and chips looked safe and were clearly popular.

Had my 60th birthday party there with friends and my family, in the marquee in the gardens. Had a wonderful evening.

Great location and appreciate there has been a lot of rain which made some outside area boggy. The prices that are charged are well over the top especially for what you get even though the food was nice. Went in a large group and we all thought the same and were warned by friends before we went. Drink prices are expensive as well.

Tom did a brilliant job at looking after our very large party. Everyone enjoyed the food and location. The main problem we experienced was the poor accessibility for our mum who is in a wheelchair. Staff were very helpful but that couldn’t make up for the lack of basic infrastructure.

Amazing location but spoiled by 2 things. 1: The staff seem pretty grumpy and unfriendly every time I’ve visited. Food service is slow and inconsistent even when the pub isn’t that busy. 2: Youngs offer a pretty limited selection of average beers and the food menu is limited and disappointing. This place could be incredible but it’s let down by Weatherspoons vibes in an amazing place.

Very nice pub, good quality food but a little expensive. I don't mind that if the quality is good. Very nice setting.

Very pretentious and over priced doesn’t warrant the price tag . Lovely decor but does that warrant the overpricing 🤔 what do you think

I booked Exe Restaurant for my Birthday dinner with twelve of my friends. After visiting the first time for a Sunday and receiving such amazing food and service, I knew we had to book it for my 25th Birthday. We had the most amazing evening, the food and service was impeccable. They even went to the extra effort of decorating the table and making it feel super special for my friends and I. Thus is one of my favourite restaurants in Exeter and if your looking for somewhere where the food is amazing and you feel really well looked after this place is for you. The staff are amazing, so friendly and helpful. They really do go that extra mile so thank you so much for having us. We can’t wait to come back.

The sirloin beef was excellent, and the vegetable cook produced perfect freshly cooked vegetables to go with the meal (no English mustard?). The restaurant was clean and the view is amazing. Nonetheless, the best meals are served by good waiters. I felt sorry for our waitress who had so obviously received totally inadequate training; we had to ask for a drinks menu. It was about twenty minutes before the wine I ordered arrived at our table. After our meal had been served, no one came to ask if everything was OK, (and it wasn't a busy day). we had to wait ages for our plates to be cleared and again when we wished to order our desert (As, I noted, did our neighbouring table). The pleasant atmosphere was somewhat spoiled by rather loud Musac. This was a rather harsh noise coming from the speaker above our head, completely tuneless and utterly pointless. If you feel the need to put a noise through the speakers, please make it relaxing. And tuneful would be nice!

Interesting building with several areas differing in style.
