What a fantastic location for a pub, right on the river. Good range of drinks, very clean and lovely views on a hot summers day.

Occupying a delightful spot on the quay, this pub offers a lovely selection of reasonably priced ales

Buy as many bar snacks as possible for they will go out of business soon if not supported. Ive set up a gofundme for the prawn cocktail. Will need further investors for cheese and onion, may need to resort to just cheese.

Recommended for food and service, food fantastic. 2 of us had the whitebait for starters best I've had for a while. 2 had the chicken burgers, 1 chilli wrap I think, 1 haddock, chips and peas. All enjoyed the food and beer's etc. Will be going back again.

Haven’t been here for many years & went for lunch which was excellent, having the haddock & chips with very light batter. Good selection of local ales & use of local suppliers, even down to the tomato sauce. Very helpful staff & lots of seating outside overlooking the river if you visit on a sunny day. Recommended.

Great independent pub. Unbeatable views of the quayside. Large beer garden, restaurant, and pool/game room. Food is excellent quality. And they're dog friendly !

Regular stop on the annual Men's walk for Hospiscare. Despite the crowd descending plenty of staff giving great service.

Great stopping point when having a walk along the river in Exeter. Dogs as well as their walkers welcome. There is a new menu as well as a good selection of drinks. 5 mins from the quay. also a free pool table once a week.

Came here for lunch. Staff weren't too friendly. Service was a bit poor as for got my friends panni. Was told after ordering that I couldn't have cheese chips cause they didn't have enough to do cheese sandwich or panni if there do cheese on chips ? Good choice of on tap largers beers etc apart from they didn't have 2 cause they were waiting for delivery. They were very child and dog friendly. Menu is good but portions were very small. Also couldn't be bothered to turn on the separate fryer to do gluten free. (There own words from the chief)

We came here on Sunday afternoon for a late lunch after walking the dog. Our group ordered quinoa and beetroot burgers, beef burgers and fish & chips, and all of it was excellent! The triple cooked chips with the fish & chips were some of the nicest chips I’ve ever had. Great service and delicious food, and dog friendly too, really lovely visit, thank you!

After a long walk alongside the river stopped at this pleasant looking pub near the river and took a seat (damp & no cushions) on a bench outside. Went into the (empty) pub and bought a glass of wine which I carried outside myself for my guest. I then poured some cider vinegar & water from my picnic bottle into a plastic mug for myself. It is part of a recuperative diet and not I suspect something available in pubs in general. Perhaps I should have first asked if it was and if I could drink a glass of my own. Next moment the man who served me in the pub stormed out complaining and saying I had to leave his pub. I apologised and said I would wait to drink from my mug until we left, when my guest had finished their wine. The man wouldn’t have it and insisted I leave at once. Embarrassingly I had to sit on the wall a foot away while my guest finished their wine. Perhaps I was at fault but surely it was no way to treat a paying punter who had bought a drink and not used any of the pubs facilities other than a wet seat. Whatever happened to hospitality and the warm and friendly publicans that used to be at this lovely old pub in the past?

Used to come to this pub all the time when we lived in topsham, we would walk, now moved abit further and not been since lockdown. We decided as the food was so good we would visit. What a disappointment. The Sunday menu was dreadful, ham, egg and chips, some quinoa burger , salt n pepper chicken or some beef roast!!!! That was it. This place used to have a fantastic menu and did the best ploughman’s and fish n chips in Exeter, what’s happened. Used to be run by the loveliest friendliest Italian landlord who has disappeared, either deceased or retired? No one was eating at all which says something.plus good only served 12-3 what’s that about in a busy location like the quay, you are going to end up closing up f you don’t up the anti as they say. We also know someone who went last year said it was dreadful too. Had a cold drink and hastily left , won’t be returning, such a bloody shame

Very Friendly Pleasant Staff made to feel really welcome

Our daughter's wedding was held in the function room - so spacious & airy, leading out to the patio area beside the river. Food was incredible - you could so tell it was all home home cooked - simply delicious! All the staff were so friendly & helpful - both on the day & leading up to it. Simply cannot recommend this venue enough! Thankyou for making our day even more special!

We ordered red and white wine and both were awful. The service was even worse because the man behind the bar was very rude saying that there is nothing wrong with the wine. We strongly not recommend that pub.

Lovely place with a beautiful view

Love this place, it is ideal for us with the dog and also when friends come and fancy a Quay side walk, it is in the perfect location. We have been a few times and have been warmly greeted each time. I don't want to recommend everyone to visit or we will never get a place there but honestly it is lovely. Thank you to all the wonderful staff.

Big shout out to Dan, Mark and Carol. They recently changed their prices and accidently over charged us but we didn't noticed then 5 mins later Mark came to our table with the correct change. This shows they are 9f good character and morals. The pub it self was beautiful with great views will definitely be going again

Always a good place to stop off when you're out for a walk around the area.

We went with the family for Christmas drinks with friends. We had a ball playing games and catching up. Great atmosphere.

Another find. We had been looking for a place to eat and walking along Exeter Quay stumbled on the Port Royal. Well priced menu and the food was excellent. Again this was cooked from scratch so had to wait a short while but definitely we'll worth it. One of our party was a vegetarian and was well satisfied with the meal she chose. Said the cheese was really flavoursome. Definitely recommended. Not just for food but for the views over the water, the service and the ambience.

Often pop by here when we walk dogs and always nice to stop. Lovely people and always a pleasure :D Love going here.

Attentive staff, cozy layout. Ideal in the summer thanks to the outdoor space. Neat flowers. The perfect peaceful treat for a local pint in front of the river. Traditional comfort food with vegan options. Particularly appreciated: GLUTEN FREE ale from the cask, one of the few in the area. There is also a gaming area but I have not explored that yet. I will definitely come back.

We held our mums wake here on 17th August. Massive thanks to the helpful, friendly and professional team. They did our mum proud. The buffet for 75 people was fantastic. Several relations stated it was the best buffet they had seen. Thanks once again.

Very friendly place highly recommend . We had the light lunch which was enough at a reasonable price the service was excellent and the cutlery was very clean which my wife commented on to the waiter and the home made ice cream was really delicious.

Fantastic haddock lovely crispy thin batter,refreshing pint of cider. Sat outside in the shade.

Had our wedding reception here yesterday and was absolutely amazing. The staff are so lovely and nothing is too much trouble. The absolutely spoiled us, the food and drink was fabulous and it was so reasonable and fantastic value for money. If you are looking for a venue to celebrate I would absolutely recommend this venue. The weather was a bit rubbish but it didn't matter as inside the table decorations and the atmosphere for the area we were in was just lovely. All out guests had a great time, Port Royal we will be back. ❤

Not the most welcoming of pubs. We ordered the Sunday roasts, one gammon and one beef. The meat in both dinners was lovely, however the roast potatoes weren’t really roasted and looked pale and unappetising. The food was warm, but not hot. No one asked how our food was and the atmosphere in general was lacking.

Came here with my partner for Sunday lunch and were so impressed by the food quality and customer service. The gentleman behind the bar and woman that brought us our food were delightful. Just an all round good experience.

If you are considering going for the ham egg and chips I wouldn’t bother as you’d need to order 2 of them. For £13 it’s a complete disgrace. Over priced for what I’d say is just basic supermarket ham and for the 10 chips you get with it you will be greatly disappointed

This year we celebrated a truly special anniversary. It involved a beautiful card from the Queen. Due to restrictions we couldn’t hold a party or reception. To say we were sad and disappointed didn’t get near how we felt. Then we had a brainwave. Speak to Dan and Mark and go from there…. That was the beginning of plans that resulted in a perfect romantic evening. Our special celebration had to include the boat. Dan said the boat would definitely be part of our celebration. We had no idea what they had in mind but were more than happy to leave it in their capable hands. We chose a starter and dessert and Dan and chef liaised on the main course. A fabulous Sea Bass. Heaven on a plate. Our starter was chicken liver parfait and desert chocolate and raspberry torte with Tonka bean ice cream. The starter and dessert were served on slates. They looked wonderful and frankly, if served on a plate, it wouldn’t have been right. Our Daughter and her partner came for the weekend to celebrate our special event. We dressed for the occasion and set off for the Port Royal. OMG. We were blown away by the sooo special dining area with the boat the star. We all loved it. Carol and Mark had been very busy. The boat was decorated with fabric and flowers from Carol’s garden. There was a beautiful vase of flowers and the table was laid with beautiful white linen, shining cutlery and gleaming glassware. We were all impressed. It was an emotional moment. We began with bubbles and then the food arrived. We were all in agreement, it was a fantastic dinner, an evening filled with atmosphere and love and it could not have been better or more perfect. Thanks are not enough but here goes… Dan, you patiently listened to what we hoped for. Mark, as always so understanding and Carole, always smiling and so friendly. You are all stars. Chef the Sea Bass was a triumph. So to each of you and all at the Port Royal THANK YOU 😊. Without you and your efforts we wouldn’t have the wonderful memories we made that night. Good food, excellent service reasonably priced menu, most things are sourced locally. Staff are very pleasant and helpful. The only thing on the downside for me personally would be that I prefer my food served on a plate and not on a piece of slate

We spent a perfect afternoon in the sun enjoying great wine and food. We had the calamari starter which was the best we’ve ever had and the pork and beef burger which is a very generous portion. The staff are very friendly and attentive even on a busy sunny afternoon. A big thank you to Carol for looking after us all afternoon. Fantastic location and cannot wait to return.

A lovely sunny Friday although a chilli breeze but still perfect for my wife and I to take a stroll along the quay at Exeter. After being stuck in doors re lockdown the idea of being able to to enjoy the open air and lunch in different surroundings really cheers you up. So as we approached The Port Royal on the quay side the decision to stop for lunch here was easy with the sun shinning the breeze dropped and a nice view of the river. Checking the menu we both decided to go for the ploughman's lunch, sitting down we had quite a wait for service, as the waitress walked by several times before acknowledging us. Eventually she took our drinks order followed by our eventual food order. The ploughmans arrived, on SLATES ( what is the matter with plates), how can I put this well the flavour was ok, cheese nice, pickle very tasty and the toasted sourbread roll ok too. Now then for £11 each I would expect more than the artistically arranged meagre ingredients, three very thin shavings of a pickled onion ( not a whole pickled onion as most ploughman lunches serve) three very very thin shaving from an apple that you could read your daily paper through, a couple shavings from a tomato ( thought the chefs knife missed cutting the tomato and just grazed the skin). And finally the tiniest julienne of carrots I've had my misfortune to see. So to sum up, value for money a big NO ,would we return or recommend again NO NO NO.

The Sunday lunch was good with a great selection of vegetables. The smaller plate was much better value for money and appeared to have one potato less than the regular sized portion. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent but the treacle tart was the smallest portion I have ever seen! The staff were friendly and attentive but the young waitress did forget part of our order which was a shame.

Fabulous food and great staff. The restaurant have really thought about the safety of customers without compromising on experience. Food was delicious with great vegan choices too - none of your bog standard poor salad with vegan cheese here! Staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful. Had a fab lunch. Thank you.

Called in before a walk around Exeter with a group of friends, very nice pub with good social distancing and very clean. Staff were very attentive and friendly. A great pub!

Visité ayer para almorzar con mi esposa. Originalmente había reservado una mesa en el interior, sin embargo, el sol brillaba, así que pregunté si podíamos sentarnos afuera. Cuando llegamos éramos los primeros clientes en el pub. Pedimos bebidas y luego comida. Literalmente, después de tomar el pedido, la camarera regresó con la máquina de tarjetas. Nos sorprendió que nos pidieran que pagáramos antes de tener nuestra comida. Sin embargo, habíamos planeado tomar otra bebida y postres, aceptar el pago por adelantado nos desanimó ya que sentimos que no creían que éramos confiables. No nos dieron la opción de tener una pestaña. El propietario tampoco nos preguntó si estábamos contentos con nuestras comidas. Sabía que el pub había sido vendido a un nuevo propietario y estábamos ansiosos por visitarlo. No volveremos a visitarnos. Antipático y nada acogedor.

Mi pareja y yo fuimos al Port Royal por primera vez desde el cambio de propietario.El nuevo propietario fue antipático y grosero.La comida estaba buena, pero la velada se arruinó por su actitud brusca.Vino a nuestra mesa y dijo “puedes pagar ahora” antes de que decidiéramos si tomar un postre.¡No volveremos hasta que los cambios de administración que no imagino sean demasiado largos!Es una pena que el resto del personal fuera genial y la ubicación fabulosa.

Traté de encontrar un lugar para participar en salir a comer para ayudar, pero en todas partes estaba lleno o haciendo cola en un miércoles por la noche soleada. Decidí parar en Port Royal, aunque no participé en el esquema de pescado y patatas fritas, ¡eran unos guisantes blandos encantadores increíbles! El personal es muy amable y el servicio de mesa es muy eficiente. Disfruté de la noche, gracias, lo recomendaría, espero volver pronto.

Second Sunday lunch here. So good, great meat, lovely vegetables, super gravy, good Yorkshire pud, just nailed it all. Super professional and friendly staff, safe atmosphere. We will return. Good value. Thank you.

Braved the weather and walked to the pub for a Valentines evening meal. Not been for a couple of years but heard it was under new management and hoped it would be as good as it once was. Well surprise no1 it was warm and inviting and better, surprise no2 good selection of beers and wine, surprise no3 they do Specials and surprise no4 the food was fresh, hot, arrived in good time by the perfect staff.

Este es mi pub favorito en Exeter. No hay jukebox, pero excelente música que varía desde 1950 hasta nuestros días. Me alegra que controlen la música. Dos bares, uno un lounge bar y la otra piscina y un buen tablero de dardos. Buena cerveza. Limpio, cómodo y relajante. He comido aquí una vez en el verano y mi sándwich de pescado goujon fue excelente. Voy a tener una cena asada aquí la próxima semana, parece una casera adecuada pero más bonita. Vale la pena una visita a Exeter Quay.

Hemos estado viniendo aquí por un tiempo y siempre estuvo "bien", pero desde que se hizo cargo ha mejorado dramáticamente. La comida es fantástica, las cervezas cambian regularmente y siempre hay algo interesante para probar. Un ambiente encantador y un servicio amable lo convierten en una cálida bienvenida y la ubicación es excelente. Definitivamente lo recomendaría!

Went here January 2020 for a friend’s birthday. Nice location overlooking the river. We had a private section at the end reserved for us, which was great. We had the buffet option for food, which was tasty, but there was way too much main course for us all and hardly any pudding. Think the balance need addressing a little.

Was fortunate to be invited to a wedding reception at the port royal last month. Wow, it was fantastic. They did an amazing job with the food and service, attentive and friendly but not intrusive. Food was wonderful, the carbonara is highly recommended. Later on in the evening they put out a lovely buffet. I wish every success to the new owners as they're clearly putting the effort in to make this a wonderful pub.

The new management team have transformed this pub. Had an amazing 3 course Christmas meal at very reasonable price- staff were lovely- very chilled out and welcoming- will definitely keep going back 😁

Great evening; unbelievable food, amazing service and friendly atmosphere. The extra 5 minute along the quay is definitely worth it.

My two pals and I went to The Port Royal and enjoyed a wonderful lunch of exquisite local steak burgers and one spicy veggie burger. For pudding we had treacle tart to die for with clotted cream. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I strongly recommend this place, fairly recently taken over by new management.

Believe it or not I have been walking past this pub for 2 years and I have never eaten in here.it has recently been taken over by new owners and I have to admit they are true to their word.A lovely warm welcome and atmosphere very attentive.I called I with my friend and son who is 14 my son had carbanora and my friend had the lasagna both where very happy as my son is very fussy over his carbanora I was happy.I had the steak which was very tasty it is hard to get a steak just right believe it or or or but you did a great job.Keep up the good work hope you are successful in achieving a new lease of life in a great location.

Had a great time at The Port Royal this afternoon. The new owners have really raised the bar in this great pub, in a great location. I had the duck liver parfait starter with the roast topside as a main, my partner also had the topside and a sweet to follow (I forget which one). Everything was superb and the Atlantic ale was perfect to wash it all down. Thank you Dan and Mark, we'll be back very soon.

First visited this pub in September and we fell in love with it. Visited again several times more recently and although there has been a change of management, the food remains amazing and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Highly recommended.

Just perfect. I’m told the burger was excellent. It looked so good. I chose The Duck Liver Parfait. OMG. Superb. I was in foodie heaven. The presentation was worthy of fine dining. Ice creams are yummy and the sticky toffee pudding one of the best ever.

En este fantástico lugar, junto a las vistas al río, puede tomar un café, tomar una copa o darse un festín con una variedad de muy buena comida. Hay varios eventos como concursos y dardos y generalmente hay un grupo de compañeros de bebida amigables.

Great riverside pub, Didn’t stay for food but menu looks great. Friendly service, good drinks, reasonable priced. Garden- Best sunny spot in Exeter! I’m sure the owners will make a great success and I wish them the very best of good luck.

We came here for a pub lunch and it was amazing I'm always sceptical about dough bread but the roll for the burger was gorgeous and so was the whole meal the burger you can tell is homemade everyone was amazed and adored their food, definitely will be coming again.

Early evening meal gammon was lovely plenty of it and chips others had scampi good service right by river nice views friendly staff plenty of drinks by all and sister liked the cappuccino frothy and hot enjoyable evening!

La luz brillante en este pub es la camarera Libby, ella es un diamante, viejo más allá de sus años, solo 20 pero gran personaje siempre servicial y concienzudo. Visité ayer para celebrar el cumpleaños de mis hijos con un almuerzo. Elegimos 5 bocados ligeros para compartir entre 4 de nosotros como entrantes, todos excelentes, bocados de pescado, calamares, pan de ajo con queso, nachos de chile y un k Camembert horneado, todo excelente y nuestra camarera fue encantadora, revisó un par de ingredientes que no estaban ' Me gustó o alguien fue alérgico a.

Went here today at 13:15 and the guy behind the bar was a rude vile obnoxious low life who wouldn’t serve a family of 5 with a 6 week old baby. Seriously do not recommend.

En un día ventoso, disfrutamos de una excelente hamburguesa y costillas en este pub espacioso con vista al río. Nuestros perros fueron bienvenidos. El servicio era eficiente y amable. Con una pinta de nutria y un refresco grande, la factura era de 31. 50, que fue una buena relación calidad-precio.

Good food but very dated. Mind this was nearly a year ago. Nice to sit beside the river and eat and watch the world go by.

I came here with my boyfriend on a Friday night whilst we were staying round the corner for the weekend. It was completely dead bar two other people. It was £8 for two pints and mine came inclusive of a long blonde hair (not mine!)
