A pub with exceptional service - from the moment you walk in you're treated with respect and helpful advice. The staff, even though the majority are very young are very polite and helpful. The quality of the food is excellent and at very competitive prices. The location allows you to relax immediately and to enjoy the scenery whilst also enjoying your choice from the very comprehensive menu. The food was quickly delivered, very well presented and delicious. The amount of outside seating allowed customers to spread out to the many seating areas bordering the river. It was a thoroughly enjoyable lunch - thank you to the staff of Mill on the Exe.

We were looking forward to visiting The Mill on the Exe as it was quite a while since we were there. It was not as good as usual, the sharer board left a lot to be desired and fish & chips were not hot, fish seemed to over cooked and the chips not crispy; We were offered a dessert on the house but not being dessert people this was declined. Service was just OK.

This restaurant has always been my top choice in Exeter. The atmosphere is cosy and comfortable. However, during my last visit, something unexpected happened. After finishing our meal, we asked for boxes for the leftovers to take home. To our surprise, the boxes we received appeared to have been reused and just washed, which was quite concerning. We requested paper boxes instead, but the waitress informed us that they only had these available. We pointed out that the boxes seemed previously used, but she insisted they were brand new and had just been taken out of the carton. This was a disappointing experience!!! And I wrapped my food with napkins 😅.

Gorgeous, historic pub on the Riverside, near the station just a little after the roundabout. Seating , on Terraces under the Willows and up outside?, the Conservatory . The Mill On The Exe looks fabulous before you get inside. Very old interior with beautiful decor and furnishings to complement the atmosphere. Plenty of tables, all told. They have rooms - which I didn't know about - but must check them out , as, we are going daily, to the RD&E hospital- if we feel exhausted after our journeying from Holsworthy - we might be lucky to get a room. We ate an early just before 6pm and were more or less, alone in the Conservatory, next to a very large fire in the middle, which is obviously great in Winter? Lots of customers were outside on the riverbank in the Sun.🌞 All the staff were extremely cheerful chatting while taking our order and when they passed by.The Toilets were very nice- which is one thing, that I judge an establishment on. We ordered the Light Fish and Chips and a Steak Salad, both washed down with a pint of bitter and very nice large glass Rosè .We were given a bottle of water to wash the meal down with, very nice, but were too full, to look at the deserts menu.... All in all- we wished to stop so many times, as we passed, but after finally doing so, have found a gem, that is not just for Students. Highly recommend.

Starters: SALT & PEPPER SQUID. Terrible. I received some unidentifiable deep-fried balls that neither I nor my partner could eat. They were so salty and yet so tasteless. Main: SQUID AND PRAWN LINGUINE. Terrible. I asked to swap linguine for tagliatelle and luckily I got that, but once I received the course it was a disaster. It was incredibly salty and had nothing remotely Italian in it (if you cook pasta...). There was coriander in it which made it taste like a Thai dish, and very randomly they put some fennel in it too. Parsley, fennel and coriander you guessed it, awful combination, ESPECIALLY on pasta. I did not know there was CHORIZO in my dish, it was not mentioned in the title and was just conveniently hidden in the ingredients list. The tagliatelle was overcooked, the whole dish was an utter disappointment and disgust. To me, it felt more like they threw leftovers in a pan and called it a dish. At this point I was hungry (I didn't eat all day that day so I could be hungrier and have more food once there) and I had a couple of bites and then I had to push it away before feeling sick. Dessert: WARM CHOCOLATE BROWNIE. Vanilla scoop tasted like meds, brownie was nothing like chocolate more like a burnt pan. No redemption there. Wine: Whispering Angel. The angel whispered to me to run away, and fast. Because not even the £12 wine bottle (sold by them for 45) was ok. Bitter and dry as hell, Devil's Whisper more like. Water: at the beginning, they asked me if we wanted water on the table. I was shocked we've been served tap water. TAP WATER! Who even drinks that anymore? Even the water tasted like bleach. At the end of the night, I asked if I could have a canned or bottled Coke and they only had a draft, so I didn't get it, I wasn't in for another disappointment. My partner did not like his food much either, although he politely forced himself to have more food than I did. This was on OUR ANNIVERSARY. I did not eat anything. The place was incredibly beautiful and that's one of the reasons why I was so shocked that the food did not reflect at all the beauty of the place. What a shame! I won't be going there again and won't recommend to my family and friends. The staff was very good too, I wonder if they had any food from their workplace. I was happy when we left and still so very hungry.

I had to rattle the cages both times to get service. Nobody came and checked on us or asked us about our meal or offered anything in compensation….even a free round of drinks would have been nice. The only excuse was “it was busy with graduation week”!!! Well that’s not my problem….bring in more staff! Shocking experience for a meal that cost us over £100. Mill on The Exe has a great location, and that’s about it. We recently visited with friends, a mid week, for food and a couple of drinks. We started with three slices of slightly toasted focaccia bread, a small ramekin of olives and some oil….for £8! Mains were poor quality with the chicken burger dry, gammon overcooked, burger overly salty and formed of ‘cheap meat’ with an awful texture, and a side of chips. For the price, and the feel of trying to be a gastro style pub, it’s failing miserably and we would expect more. The establishment used to have a ‘Specials Board’, but that’s gone. (It’s easier to churn out the same rubbish than prepare a special). Beer now overpriced at nearly £7 a pint. The food has always been hit and miss here, more miss, but that’s it, we will not eat here again after our last experience. Such a shame, great location, which they seem to be cashing in on. PS. Please don’t reply with the generic, ‘We strive to ensure our guest have the best experience possibly….’ and, ‘We have taken your feedback onboard’ blah blah. From the negative reviews and your response to them, you clearly haven’t taken them ‘onboard’.

Finally got round to staying at the mill ! in a river view suit! We know this pub ,as for living near the area ! as to being fortunate over the years to pop in for drinks n food , which to never had to complain so far ? Not that haven't tried before hand to stay over night ,but always booked ?!! This is a review on River suit No 4 ! One of the best exrtra's with staying here is you get an actual parking space free , allocated to your suit / room ! so if you visit Exeter oftern or not ,their are plenty of pain n dispare car parks !! But to be fair there are plenty , bit of a walk thou ! to the mill !!! not to badly priced either plus your vehicle will be ok. Booking in : Not till '3pm',enter the pub for keys !! after parking first ??? why the pub carpark is always busy n not that big . You get a room swipe n an actual key to main door , as to come n go ? Suit 4 River view Is on the ground floor of main door to leading outside or you can access the pub from inside . Their is a security alarm on the inner door of this suit , so if u havent closed your door properly ? it sounds off . The suit itself was immaculately clean n im not just saying it ! The designis lovely , great to see a Nespresso, thats just my own taste ! Waldrobe was big enough for me but hey us ladies like to take all the room! No it was big enough for two n lovely art deco designs. Big desk with the coffee etc n mirror above ? Lovely marble fireplace. Really comfy big bed ,so didnt wake up all in pain . bathroom was big with bath with shower head over it, My partner always tries the baths n showers out n said they fine . Now wot the room is all about !!!!!!!!!!!! those comfy chairs in window ,watching the ducks etc go by & the sun going down ! wot more is there to say but open your free can of korev from your fridge n pour , sip n arrrrh . ps ; the people who work here are lovely . Breakfast is in the pub n if u like your sausages cooked properly , like me , then this a given . Would we stay again , Absolutely !!!!!! Besides of to the newly Crabshell in kings bridge soon .

Title: A Disappointing Experience at Mill on the exe We recently visited M/E, expecting a delightful culinary experience based on the positive reviews I/we had read. Unfortunately, our visit turned out to be quite disappointing. From the moment we walked in, the ambiance seemed promising. The decor was modern, and the restaurant appeared clean and inviting. However, our initial impressions quickly soured due to the lackluster service. Despite the restaurant being half-empty, the staff seemed inattentive and slow to respond. I ordered the fish and chips, (Newlyn landed Hake in St Austell Ale batter with crushed minted peas, tartare sauce and lemon STD). When it finally arrived the presentation was underwhelming. The portion size was more like for 6 years old kid and the food was lukewarm at best. The taste was another letdown. The texture was off as well; the minted mushy peas had no mint taste at all, It felt like the dish had been hastily put together without any care or attention to detail. To add to the disappointment, it cost £18.75 Overall, our experience at Mill on the exe was far from satisfying. I hope the management takes this feedback seriously and makes the necessary improvements. With better attention to food quality. Mill on the exe could potentially live up to its reputation. I /we won’t be return back to Mill on the exe in hurry....

Booked at last minute for overnight stay away, and what a place we found. Right on the banks of the river, facing west so that the garden and terrace were in full sun in the afternoon and evening, a 10 minute walk (up a step flight of stairs) to the centre of Exeter with all that the beautiful cathedral centre has to offer in a compact walkable area! We ate in the restaurant and had a superb meal served by an attentive undergraduate waiter (followed in the morning by an equally superb breakfast and a walk along the river) at a very reasonable price The room was excellent being large, well furnished and decorated with a comfortable bed and great shower and quiet even though the doors faced the beer garden and river beyond. The only downside was the private terrace outside the room, which obviously hadn’t been sweep recently and was covered with moss that had fallen from an adjacent roof and a number of dog ends and beer bottle which although pointed out to the general manager was not resolved during our stay Overall and place to stay and visit Exeter and further a field we shall be back

Location is beautiful! Service was wonderful! But food... not so good... we had a roast with our 2 children. We were so excited after a long day to enjoy a great roast but we were left pretty disappointed. When our dinner came out, it was luke warm to cold. The roast potatoes were dry and there was no little roast dinner touches... like stuffing, pigs in blankets, gravy to add to dinner... it was dry and quite bland. We were so gutted but there was colouring for the girls and a beautiful view. Our server was lovely and very efficient. It's just a shame about the food :(

From the moment we stepped into the Mill on the Exe, the experience was nothing short of exceptional. Celebrating my son’s birthday, the venue offered a feast not just for our palates but for our eyes too, with its stunning views and trendy ambiance. The menu catered to all tastes, ensuring that everyone, from my university-aged son and daughter, to the most discerning of diners, found something to relish. The food was a culinary delight, with every dish perfectly cooked and seasoned to perfection. Coupled with the comfortable seating, the atmosphere was just right for a leisurely meal and some entertaining people-watching. The staff deserve a special mention for their polite and efficient service, which added to the overall enjoyment of our visit. With easy parking and a central location, the Mill on the Exe stands out as a beacon of hospitality. And as for the scenic views, they provided the perfect backdrop to a wonderful dining experience. This place truly ticks all the boxes for a memorable outing. What’s not to love? We’re already looking forward to our next visit! Service: 5/5 | Location: 5/5 | Food & Drinks: Outstanding
