We chose the Mill on the Exe completely blind as we were looking for somewhere to meet up for lunch with old friends and wow, what a treat it was! The location is perfect and although it has its own car park, it gets very busy so be prepared for a short wait for a space. Our welcome was warm, the environment clean and inviting and the food was delicious! We honestly couldn't have chosen a better place to meet and based on our experience, we'll all be back (to probably stay as well). Meg (our dog), was also well looked after and gave it a high paw! Thanks to all the team, we appreciate you.

Food Hygiene Concerns The Singapore Crab Fries side dish tasted fine although I couldn’t finish the dish. I became progressively ill throughout the afternoon and evening with cramping stomach pain and nausea . I became very sick and vomited several times and continued to experience cramping stomach pains, nausea, freezing cold with a headache for the rest of the night. These symptoms are consistent with food poisoning . My partner contacted the pub in the evening to alert them and to suggest that they don’t serve anymore crab. The person who answered said they’d checked the date on the crab and it was in date. This information was given without the person leaving the call to check the date on the crab. This leads me to conclude that there may have been other complaints for her to have checked the date prior to receiving the phone call. The call recipient stated that the crab meat was in date because she had checked it herself and that I ‘couldn’t possibly be ill from eating it as it’s served cold’. Her attitude was dismissive. I am concerned that she / the kitchen staff have a poor understanding of the storage and preparation of foods that need to be treated with extra care to make sure they are safe to eat. There was no real assurance and I am concerned regarding: *Possible bacteria in the kitchen *Whether the crab is from a reputable supplier * is the pub confident that the crab is caught and handled safely? *Was the crab prepared by someone with specialist knowledge? Disappointed with this response, as a consumer and as an almost lifelong customer of this pub.

Weirdo from London met a unique lady not from London. The wine/ fruit based drink for the lady was nice and crisp. Don't know the beer so asked the bartender(ess?) and she said I drink this one so I had a pint of that one. If I happen to be 240 miles away in Exeter then I'll go back for another. Hope to get the same server as she deserves a pint backatcha. 5' 1 1/2" ish short slightly curly hair with a black n white stripey top and black strides. Buy her a pint from me! Crab sandwich was excellent. Not their fault I don't eat chips. That fault belongs to the world. A great start to an odd day. Go here. They're nice peeps! I'm from London. I know not nice peeps. Staff very friendly and welcoming and we got fireside sofas, although no fire actually burning but the atmosphere is all there. Amazing Riverside Atmosphere ⚓️ Mill on the Exe plays host to a fantastic setting and atmosphere on the banking of Exeter Quay. With plenty of seating both inside and out, and with great decor to match, there truly is not a bad seat in the house. 🪴 🦑 For our food we tried the Salt and Pepper Squid, house Burgers as well as the seafood sharer 🍤 All food was fresh and the seafood platter was a plentiful portion! Presentation was slightly lacking on both our starters and burgers, but made up for it in flavour 😋 Whether you are having a drink by the river side or a family meal by the bar, Mill on the Exe is an Exeter must visit! 🌊 🌟 Recommendations: Salt and Pepper Squid, Seafood Sharer 🍤 ⛔️ Drawbacks: Presentation of food 🦑 Squid Rating: 8/10 📸 Instagram - The Calamari Game 🌟🌟🌟🌟/ 5 Stars

Ok. We went here for Sunday lunch today and I have to say, the staff and service were excellent but I was absolutely appalled at the amount of food I got for a roast lunch for £21!!! This is not a small amount of money for a communal lunch not a bespoke meal. I do NOT need quantity over quality and prefer the latter but my plate was less than half full when it arrived (a normal sized plate) I had two half slices of beef, one small floret of broccoli, one quarter parsnip, half a carrot, a small bit of cauliflower cheese and some scrapings of cabbage. The food was quite nice, not outstanding but it was ridiculous. I am not a large man. I am not a greedy man. But I expect to leave here feeling like I have been fed properly especially for £21 for what is a fairly well trodden path of a Sunday lunch. I am really, really, really disappointed and if they are struggling to make money with what they charged me then it is clear, they will not be in business for much longer. What a fall from grace in my eyes!

Location is great, beautiful views from the restaurant and the gardens of the Quay. The staff are more than helpful and friendly Prices are average for Exeter and the location. Unfortunately they could do with a bigger car park as if busy that's a nightmare and parking is a long way to walk if full. Unfortunately, this time round the prawn and squid linguini was far too oily I couldn't eat it, couldn't taste flavour only oil which was a shame and the gammon was far too salty more than what gammon should be. Apart from this the burgers were lovely would have been better with something more than just chips pm the side. Hopefully next time will be better because normally they are fab 👌

This restaurant has always been my top choice in Exeter. The atmosphere is cosy and comfortable. However, during my last visit, something unexpected happened. After finishing our meal, we asked for boxes for the leftovers to take home. To our surprise, the boxes we received appeared to have been reused and just washed, which was quite concerning. We requested paper boxes instead, but the waitress informed us that they only had these available. We pointed out that the boxes seemed previously used, but she insisted they were brand new and had just been taken out of the carton. This was a disappointing experience!!! And I wrapped my food with napkins 😅.

Gorgeous, historic pub on the Riverside, near the station just a little after the roundabout. Seating , on Terraces under the Willows and up outside?, the Conservatory . The Mill On The Exe looks fabulous before you get inside. Very old interior with beautiful decor and furnishings to complement the atmosphere. Plenty of tables, all told. They have rooms - which I didn't know about - but must check them out , as, we are going daily, to the RD&E hospital- if we feel exhausted after our journeying from Holsworthy - we might be lucky to get a room. We ate an early just before 6pm and were more or less, alone in the Conservatory, next to a very large fire in the middle, which is obviously great in Winter? Lots of customers were outside on the riverbank in the Sun.🌞 All the staff were extremely cheerful chatting while taking our order and when they passed by.The Toilets were very nice- which is one thing, that I judge an establishment on. We ordered the Light Fish and Chips and a Steak Salad, both washed down with a pint of bitter and very nice large glass Rosè .We were given a bottle of water to wash the meal down with, very nice, but were too full, to look at the deserts menu.... Starters: SALT & PEPPER SQUID. Terrible. I received some unidentifiable deep-fried balls that neither I nor my partner could eat. They were so salty and yet so tasteless. Main: SQUID AND PRAWN LINGUINE. Terrible. I asked to swap linguine for tagliatelle and luckily I got that, but once I received the course it was a disaster. It was incredibly salty and had nothing remotely Italian in it (if you cook pasta...). There was coriander in it which made it taste like a Thai dish, and very randomly they put some fennel in it too. Parsley, fennel and coriander you guessed it, awful combination, ESPECIALLY on pasta. I did not know there was CHORIZO in my dish, it was not mentioned in the title and was just conveniently hidden in the ingredients list. The tagliatelle was overcooked, the whole dish was an utter disappointment and disgust. To me, it felt more like they threw leftovers in a pan and called it a dish. At this point I was hungry (I didn't eat all day that day so I could be hungrier and have more food once there) and I had a couple of bites and then I had to push it away before feeling sick. Dessert: WARM CHOCOLATE BROWNIE. Vanilla scoop tasted like meds, brownie was nothing like chocolate more like a burnt pan. No redemption there. Wine: Whispering Angel. The angel whispered to me to run away, and fast. Because not even the £12 wine bottle (sold by them for 45) was ok. Bitter and dry as hell, Devil's Whisper more like. Water: at the beginning, they asked me if we wanted water on the table. I was shocked we've been served tap water. TAP WATER! Who even drinks that anymore? Even the water tasted like bleach. At the end of the night, I asked if I could have a canned or bottled Coke and they only had a draft, so I didn't get it, I wasn't in for another disappointment. My partner did not like his food much either, although he politely forced himself to have more food than I did. This was on OUR ANNIVERSARY. I did not eat anything. The place was incredibly beautiful and that's one of the reasons why I was so shocked that the food did not reflect at all the beauty of the place. What a shame! I won't be going there again and won't recommend to my family and friends. The staff was very good too, I wonder if they had any food from their workplace. I was happy when we left and still so very hungry.

A nice pub right on the river. Sitting outside on a pleasant day was magical. The sound of water from the weir was relaxing. Good food and the whole experience was very relaxing. The staff were friendly and professional. Cannot review the rooms as we did not stay.

Came a bit after nine on a Thursday evening, Nice large place, looked promising. Bottom bar closed, sent upstairs, massive queue and only one barman. Lost us. Won't be bothering again.

Had lunch there today, food was really nice & staff were excellent, my bit of fish was a bit on the small side even for a small portion. Enjoyed my visit though & would go again.

4 of us had lunch here, the food was nice, the service better and on a nicer day the location would have been lovely.

Lovely graduation dinner the other day. The staff and food were superb. Only slight qualm was our table was a bit tight for 5, but after a couple of Cruzcampos I was relaxed 🤣

One of the most beautiful pubs gardens I have ever experienced. On a sunny afternoon, the view of the Exe and the sound of the water are hypnotic. A very relaxing space. Great food as well.

Lovely location and set up but service was so slow, it actually ruined the dinner experience. We waited for approx 40 mins for our starters and then another 40 mins for mains. I had to rattle the cages both times to get service. Nobody came and checked on us or asked us about our meal or offered anything in compensation….even a free round of drinks would have been nice. The only excuse was “it was busy with graduation week”!!! Well that’s not my problem….bring in more staff! Shocking experience for a meal that cost us over £100. I suggest asking how busy they are before you order unless you enjoy a long wait! Not recommended.

The Hotel/pub is well located in Exeter and also a reasonably priced place to stay until you consider the following. We stayed in room 24 which wasn't fit for occupation. The room fronts the main road, has a mattress that has broken springs and is permanently hot, even when the windows are open (in late November). See images to show the quality of the curtains and mattress. No wireless connectivity and when asked member of the hotel team said the service was ‘working perfectly fine’ (see image). Entry and exit from the hotel onto the street is via the courtyard where the smokers and vapours congregate so entry and exit from the hotel onto the street is not that pleasant when you have to walk through clouds of smoke being exhaled by those clustered in the space. No members of staff around on Sunday morning at check-out to discuss these issues. A very disappointing experience.

TERRIBLE. Tiny, cold portions of 'medium' fish, small must be the size of a fish finger.
