Toby Carvery Whitchurch in Cardiff

Arrived to be 'greeted' by a scruffy, ill-tempered, rude woman on the front desk. We had not booked, like the elderly couple in front of us to whom she was even more rude. Gave them a disgusted look and didn't even leave the desk to show them to their seat, just motioned with her hand. Took us to a tiny table in the middle of an aisle surrounded by occupied tables, whilst half the restaurant was roped off. When we asked if there was anywhere else to sit, she curtly replied 'no'. We walked out and will not be returning. When restaurants are complaining about fewer diners these days, quite why they would put someone like this on the front desk is beyond me. If this is the calibre of their staff, would not like to think what lurks in the kitchen.

We haven’t been back to a Toby in years we came last week and it was soo good we had to come back again this week. We were served by sally who is just wonderful. Such a lovely lady. She had a little banter with our 7 year old and made his day. We’ll definitely be returning in Sundays after the rugby games. Thank you sally for making our experience so lovely. You’re an asset to the restaurant.

Martha was our server and she was absolutely lovely to us, very smiley and extremely welcoming. One of the best servers I've ever had. Also loved the potatoes though there arent many vegetable options at the carvery, all round a great and cost effective meal.

We are regular visitors to the Toby Carvery in Whitchurch and always enjoy our visits. The beef was beautifully tender and there was plenty of it. There was plenty of choices of potatoes and veg, and the only complaint we had was that the ice cream machine was out of order. Our server was Della who always looks after us, she’s so friendly and a real grafter to boot, to be honest, if we go for lunch and she’s not there, we’re disappointed. We'll be going back very soon

Our experience tonight has been fab!! We turned up unannounced… 12 of us! We were well catered for, the service from Emily was fab, super attentive and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble! Mike on the carvery was really friendly! The food was lovely, would most definitely recommend!! Thank you!

Such an amazing server, Hannah was serving us and she did such a great job. The food was fantastic and the carvers (Stan and Dan) were very efficient and friendly. A few wobbly tables but overall, this is a perfect place to eat.

Whitchurch, Cardiff Toby is always busy. However, the food is well cooked, with a very good choice of meat & vegetables, including vegetarian gravy! Obviously, the staff are always busy, however, they always have a smile & try to make sure you're looked after.

Mate, let me put it simply, Stan may be my favourite human in the whole world. He let me indulge in many a Yorkshire pudding and boy were they cooked well. Food was great, big up the Toby massive inside the place.

Food was the typical Toby Carvery quality. Lovely meat, vegetables were warm enough but not hot. Service let the experience down. Extremely slow. The waitress was very pleasant but far too slow. We ended up with 2 disappointed children as we had waited for such a long time after our food, we ended up asking for the bill instead of ordering dessert

Raffle ticket 295 My Father and I stayed in the Travelodge behind the Whitchurch Toby Carvery last week and enjoyed a lovely breakfast in the carvery every day. We had a smashing assistant called Della (and a lovely assistant in the evening called Megan). They were so very helpful and kind. The food was great as it included a hot breakfast with the usual full English choices such as eggs and bacon, but there was also roast potatoes and carvery meat all in together - very unusual but a great way to start our day! We also had toast, cereal and porridge. Everything was fresh and hot each day. Della looked after us so well - we are very grateful. We highly recommend this Toby Carvery for breakfast as the food is great and for less than £7 per head (for hot food) and about £4 per head (for toast/cereal) with teas and coffees, it was excellent value as well. A+++

The principle of a carvery meets all my expectaions of a venue for a meal. The layout, the staff, the way that it operates are really good. Although the purpose of my was primarily to use the Carvery, the choice of beers is something that can be improved on. There was no cask beer and the suggestion from one of the vacant pumps is that the usual offering, when available, is the ubiquitous "Doombar". There are so many Cask Ales, including local beers, that would provide a more enterprising choice.

Prompt and friendly table service. Carvery staff also friendly and helpful. Food of good quality, and good to have choices beyond the very basic. Ideally, we would have liked a fruit-based dessert (such as the fruit on offer on the children's menu) as well as the ice cream, cream and stodgy options.

Hate the way they increase the price of a carvery based on what day of the week it is. Quite stingy on the meat as well, beef was cremated.

Spoilt our afternoon. Due to attitude I did not order food! Would have left but my child was Hungary!. Such a shame usually the normally have a great experience.

We had Christmas Day lunch and it was wonderful. There were 2 vegetarians in our family and they wete impressed. Food was plentiful and hot, service by Owain was impeccable, nothing was to much trouble. It really was lush!

Our group of 15 or so from Vineyard Church Cardiff came here for our men’s Christmas get together. It was super busy being this time of year, but we got a very generous and reasonably priced roast and had a great night. Our server Sally really looked after us and went to great lengths to sort out our very arduous bill. I was impressed and will definitely be back!

First time experience: Excellent menu, especially vegetarian options. Waitress was very polite and helpful, as first time customer at this restaurant. Edit 3 months later- Second experience: We were booked into travelodge for next day business meeting, after travelling for several hours. Arrived 10 minutes late to the restaurant for 8pm reservation and was told carvery was closed and no longer serving food. This despite a very large quantity still available. Very disappointing customer “service” as staff seemed more interested in finishing up. A loss to their takings as our large party dined and drank elsewhere. Also a significant wastage of food !

Had a lovely breakfast. Food was good, well priced, place was really nicely decorated for xmas. And staff were really friendly and helpful. Grace and Della were really chatty with our son and really lovely. Ticket number 239.

Ordered 5 Xmas takeaway turkey and beef lunches with a time slot of 11:30. Meals supplied at 12:10. Got home to find no roast potatoes or Yorkshire pudding with the beef order. The portions supplied were adequate but the beef looked like burnt scrap ends and the turkey slices wafer thin. We accept we have to pay a premium seeing it was Christmas Day, but considering we paid twice the price than at normal times the meals were disappointing.

This used to be our favourite place to visit and eat, we are regulars. However, the last two visits have been very disappointing. Very sloppy professional service. My mum passed away recently and, we visited her grave, and decided to go to Toby's as the food was always excellent and we had often visited with mum. The table was grubby, the plates were grubby and the areas surrounding vegetables and gravy had not been cleaned up. The gravy had a skin on it so no one was stirring it in between customers. We just decided as a family as this was a one off disappointing experience. However, my daughter and I took my grandson to the pantomime and we thought, why not finish a lovely day at the carvery. When we arrived, we were informed that there was no beef or turkey as a chef had been off. We completely understand that situations can occur at a restaurant. We decided to stay and just have a vegetarian option( we don't eat pork which was available). We were quite happy with our decision as the veg is usually lovely. Once again, our table was grubby, plates not very clean, veg looked as though it had been handing around for ages, grubby areas surrounding the veg and gravy areas and gravy had skin on again and not been stirred for ages. The vegetables didn't even taste good. Our server was very friendly but we were so disappointed with the food and cleanliness. We are in a dilemma now as we love the restaurant but don't want to visit if the experience is like this again. We just can't afford to spend money visiting a restaurant that is going to be trial and error. I think the decline in service must be down to leadership and management as the staff are always lovely. Maybe a recruitment issue? We are so disappointed as we wanted to book for Xmas lunch but cannot take the risk.

Outstanding food. Choice of four meats and as much veg as you can eat. Gravy was lovely and tasty and thick, just how I like it. Had a New York cheesecake for dessert which was delicious. My only complaint is that my coffee didn't arrive until I had started to eat my carvery. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend a visit if you're in the area.

Great food, really nice carvery for the money.

Not been here for awhile and then I remembered why. Service felt rushed and it was boiling hot, you become warm when eating anyway but it does get unbearable. Queue was long but went down pretty quickly. Food was delicious though! And that’s what we went for. Beef melts in the mouth and the beef dripping roasties were banging as my daughter would say!

Booked on way from family shopping in Cardiff, As a carvery experience it’s the worst we’ve had. Service from our waitress was perfect, she was run off her feet while other staff seemed to wander around doing very little Our carver , just seemed not bothered which was disappointing, the meal itself, dry meat , dried out veg, stuffing almost as dry as out the packet, overall poor and yes it’s nearly Xmas but an establishment that has Carvery in its name that can’t get a carvery right needs a rethink

Initially thought waitress was rude but then saw she just didn't stop the entire time we was there. The carvery - small pieces of meat not too bad, roast potatoes and parsnips good but rest of veg overcooked. Overall was shocked by the food which is home of the roast. Won't be going to a Toby again, will stick with other Carvery places.

Friendly staff good atmosphere and good . What's not to like?

A group of us from Cardiff vineyard church went for a Christmas social and we had a great time. I was late and had already eaten so can only comment on the apple and plum crumble, which was lovely. We were served by Sally who was fantastic, great fun and really helpful. Our bill was incredibly complicated and she dealt with us with great patience and joy. Will definitely return

Came here on 9 Dec at 7:30. Didn’t actually get to the carvery until 8:45!! The place was rammed full with a minimum of 25 minutes wait in the queue to get to the carvery. Once there, the food was ok but nothing better than that. They simply couldn’t keep up with the sheer numbers of people in the establishment! However, amongst this world of chaos there was an amazing lady called Emily who was a shining beacon of patience, smiles and sheer professionalism who, despite the fact she was the only one on the bar as well as trying to run a large area of the bar for clear up etc, kept the whole show running. Whatever they pay you Emily, it’s simply not enough. Thank you. Either get more staff in or ration the number of patrons you allow in at any one time.

Some friends and I had our Christmas meal and Secret Santa here last night, and I've got to say the whole experience was sensation. I called ahead and spoke with Abbie, the GM, who was super helpful and went out of her way to make sure there was an extra item on the menu for us. When we arrived, sadly our party of 9 had dwindled to 7 and the restaurant staff really accommodating. Sally, our waitress/server, was prompt and attentive all night, Charlie on the carvery was fun and helpful too. The food was really good, and insane value for money. The drinks were flowing all night. And we had absolutely no complaints all night. At the end of the meal, I mentioned to the front of house staff how happy we were with our experience, and to pass our thanks on to the kitchen staff too. So, Vikki, Owain, Christine and Hannah also get big thank you's from all seven of us :)

Following a slight misunderstanding, and in the middle of apologising to the server for not realising he was already on his way to serve us, we were told abruptly, 'I only have one pair of legs' back chat is not welcomed over a slight misunderstanding. Shame really. The food was exceptional as always. And all other staff were incredible as always. Thank you for our discount, it is very much appreciated in light of this moment of frustration and loss of appetite.

What an appalling breakfast. Toast was bread (didn’t even get a look at a toaster) sausage missing and all thrown into a small container. Supposedly there was tomatoes in there. Possibly a half of a teaspoon at a push.Binned the lot as I wouldn’t feed it to a dog. What an utter waste of money. Never order from them again that’s for sure.

Food and staff were good but the place was so hot. Everyone was sweating whilst sat at their tables. They did come around to apologise for the heat but it didn't get cooler. My baby couldn't handle it so we had to leave and it took about 45 mins for him to cool down. Definitely didn't need the heating on.
