Ffynnon Wen in Cardiff

My family frequent this restaurant often and always enjoy the warm and welcoming location, quality food and friendly staff but I’m writing this review following a particularly wonderful experience last week. I currently have a newborn and was nervous going to a restaurant with a pram/crying baby etc for the first time. Our server Helen couldn’t have been more attentive and accommodating. She made us feel completely at ease. We will definitely be returning!

Booked table placed our order with the female server who was extremely friendly very helpful and quick. Food good sized portions and very hot. Billie our female server went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. I would definitely recommend a visit

Came for drinks and was served by Helen, she was really friendly and made us feel welcome in the pub. Brilliant service from Helen.

Good food staff are great especially Helen mort when ever we go too the bar she always has a smile on her face and always very helpful and friendly

Had a lovely family meal on the weekend. My kids are fussy eaters however they really enjoyed their food. Very friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back soon. Thank you

We went for Sunday lunch it was so tasteless, I had a child size lunch, just as well as it was so tasteless that I hardly ate anything of it. My brother had the same only an adult size meal but he found his to be tasteless as well. I asked for the dessert menu but after waiting for almost 30 minutes we decided to leave and go to Sainsbury's down the road and buy some Trifles and cream from there and eat it at home!! We were disgusted with the quality of the food and service! Definitely a place we'd never go back to!! It's such a shame as my husband and I used to go there such a lot and really enjoyed the food as well as atmosphere and the staff were always so lovely. It's so sad that it's gone downhill so much.

Hi I’m Lorraine part of a group party that visits the Ffynon Wen on Saturday at 1pm. Every visit I’m greeted by Marcus and his mum and Chris, a very warm welcome. We have sampled most of the menu and are never disappointed with the quality and selection available. It’s piping hot and plenty of it. The restaurant is clean and inviting and plenty of room. I would highly recommend A*****

Visit regularly every Saturday lunchtime. Very courteous to four old ladies and we are always made very welcome.

Lovely food and great service, we have already booked for christmas day

We have visited the pub three times over the last 6 months, including today's visit. We cannot recommend this enough, primarily for the efforts of the staff. The food is lovely and the pricing is spot on etc. However, each time we have come here, the manager (a gentleman in polo shirt and tailored shorts) gives us a warm welcome and a friendly service. The wait staff are all helpful and warm. We often have 3 children with us aged 6-8 and an autistic teenager with food issues - the staff are understanding and helpful and can't offer quick enough to help us. Tonight we sat at table 12 and they kept an eye on us as they had a number of large parties in and were making sure we hadn't been forgotten or pushed aside. The staff are what keep making us come back and truly make the experience special each time

The venue is lovely and the food was pretty good. The place was understaffed though. We were showed to our table by a very young lad, he didn't inform us whether it was table service or not. We waited for a while as we saw other tables getting served, however nobody came. We decided therefore to use the order by QR code option, and ordered food and drinks. The starters came pretty quickly but no drinks. I asked where they were and it was a while again though before they came. The mains came and mine was rather underwhelming, the burgers were burnt but I didn't bother saying anything because the service was just way too slow. The staff were polite but it seemed they lack a sense of urgency and there was no clear sign of management there.

Popped in for food on the off chance not knowing if it was any good. We were pleasantly surprised the food was served piping hot and was delicious. Extra gravy? No problem, extra custard certainly.

Service was absolutely shocking, our yable wasn't ready so waited 10 mins then when it was ready it was very wonky and they placed a 16th birthday right next to a funeral party, we waited another 15 mins before someone came over and said give me 4 minutes and I will be back to take your drinks order at this point we had enough asked for our birthday cake back and left, we went to frankie and bennys. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND UNDER THE NEW MANAGEMENT THEY HAVE, WE USED TO LOVE THIS PLACE

The Ffynnon Wen provided us with a lovely location for my mother's wake - the private room we had was perfect for us (30+ people). All attending were complimentary about the catering provided too. We found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. Thank you so much for making a difficult day so much more bearable.

Greeting friendly on arrival. Food was ordered for 7 people starters and mains also sides which was asked to come out together and all came out correct and still hot was dealt with 2 gentleman and the were very friendly. Clean and tidy toilets was spotless and that was male also the females had said there toilets was spotless too. Food and drinks with deserts was a very reasonable price will definitely be dinner here again thanks again for your efforts on accommodating us also taking pictures for us due to it being a rare family occasion

Busy, busy pub but they managed to squeeze 2 of us in for food. Lovely friendly staff, speedy helpful service, lush food, definately go back.

The lady staff member who served us was very nice. However the food was not good. I had a chicken & mushroom pie which seemed as though it had been microwaved & the roast potatoes were dry & inedible.

Had a lovely lunch here today and was served at the bar by the most beautiful, friendly Irish barman. He came across as kind and professional and made us both feel welcome. Not my first time here but havnt been here for over a year but it was my friends first time and she loved her Vegan chilli. Only gave 4 stars for my food as they didn't have scampi in stock which l wanted so had the battered fish instead which was nice. Lovely pub and great staff.

We stopped off here for lunch today. A warm welcome, felt very Christmassy, dog and family friendly. We ordered Gammon and Cheeseburger. Both meals were freshly prepared, hot, and nicely served. Excellent value with equally good customer service. A rarity these days!

Booked for Christmas lunch. Table was delayed by 45 minutes. Food was cold when it arrived and half of it was inedible (more fat than meat, black carrots and the toughest Yorkshire pudding I’ve ever encountered). The staff were surly when advised that our order was incorrect and missing items such as butter. Napkins/serviettes and glasses were missing from the table and we had to ask three times for each. In the end, we had to take napkins from other laid up tables. Drinks orders were placed by app and took 30 minutes to arrive with the second round of drinks arriving well after the meal finished. Will not return and will advise others accordingly.

Boxing Day - dreadful experience. Waited 30 minutes for drinks to arrive. Pre-booked starters took an hour be served and they were ok, acceptable. Another hour until mains arrived and they were awful. Roast potatoes hard and dry, cauliflower cheese sides were cold, the cauliflower under the cheese sauce was frozen. It all tasted as if it had been warmed up after waiting around a long time and we wondered if it was food from the day before. We weren't approached for more drinks or to ask if it was all ok. After another half an hour after the mains, we didn't hold out much hope for pre-booked desserts and left. There was no argument when we only paid for drinks and starters. Last Boxing Day it was very good, what on earth has happened there ?

Update December 2024 Back to 4 stars Great service. Food delicious and not too long wait. Table nicely decorated. 4-star as tables felt cramped and could be cleaner. No curtains on window and sun was dazzling us Update December 2023 Reduce to 3 stars Booked Christmas menu. Tables basically decorated. Floor was absolutely stinking from previous customers. Sides were slow. Service and welcome mediocre. Food ok, veg overcooked. Vegan option well catered for. Under new management. What a difference! Clean, bright, spacious and friendly with a warm welcome! We particularly love the table with snakes and ladders on it which we book regularly to keep the Autistic teenager busy. Accessible entrance, car park and toilet. Varied menu catering well for vegans and allergies. Light lunch portions are great value and the coffee is delicious. This has become our new regular favourite place!

.I had travelled 5hrs to be at a funeral of a close friend. The party came to your place after but I wasn't aloud upstairs because I had a dog. So I had to sit alone in downstairs area still upset.. Billie the bar lady was lovely, friendly and helpful and fell in love with my beagle girl. Everyone did as she's so good.

Excellent Christmas meal for our group of 19, everything was plentiful, hot and tasty. The servers were cheerful and friendly, and the restaurant was festively decorated.

Dont have xmas meal cold plates and luke warm food. Plenty of gravy swimming on plate and not asked if we wanted gravy. Give this place a miss.

Staff were very polite and helpful. Food was excellent, and plenty of it. Over all a very enjoyable afternoon in lovely surroundings. 10 out of 10.

We were here as a family gathering at lunchtime early December. Staff were obviously very unhappy based on their unhelpful and dismissive behaviour - the meet and greet guy at the door to the restaurant may wish to consider ‘meet and greet?’ Service so slow. Food just awful, cold, looked as if it was thrown on the plate and delivered in a way that was ‘we just didn’t care.’ Extraordinarily terrible. Is this the standard that a paying customer should expect? There are clearly major issues at the Ffynon Wen.

Had a superb meal today at the Ffynnon Wen. Used to come very often but we haven’t lately as we felt it had gone downhill a little BUT it’s back to its best. Hubby had the gammon and in his words “superb” and I had the Hunters chicken, delicious. We’ll be back 🥳

Kelly was great. I messed up on the table booking thinking I’d booked a table for 10 people at 6.30 when I’d actually booked for 4.30. She rang and queried it with me and then rearranged tables to fit us in on a very busy night. Thanks Kelly. She also remembered our family from last time. Great service

Attended a wake, in remembrance of a friend who had passed away. The pub was tastefully decorated in anticipation of Xmas, and there was a room upstairs where the family, friends and relatives gathered to share memories of our dear friend. It was very tastefully arranged and allowed everyone to say a fond farewell. It was the first time I have visited the pub and I will definitely return in the future to enjoy the experience in a different atmosphere.

Thank you for a wonderful birthday meal and experience. Table of 6, including 2 children, food was superb and the service from the staff (Glyn and the rest of the team) was outstanding. We opted for the Sunday roast (plenty of meat and vegetables as well as an absurdly massive Yorkshire Pudding) and there were plenty of other options of the menu suitable for adults and children. The Ffynon Wen has a warm and cozy atmosphere with helpful staff esp Glynn, we are regular visitors and the food is as beautiful as always all the staff are always pleasant and never had an unwelcome visit

Been here twice in a couple of weeks and the food is great and really good value for money. The menu has a variety of choice and a decent kids menu as well. The pub has a really nice warm feel to it. I’m pretty sure we will return again at some point.

Such a lovely pub with a very warm environment, the staff are absolutely brilliant with the service and insuring your catered to. The food wow!!! It is unbelievable and always comes fresh and delicious. I would recommend everyday of the week. Lovely food and very good price.

Food tasted of stale frying oil

Nice place the staff are friendly and really helpful. We attended for a birthday meal and there were around 12 of us, the only downside to the night was that the food portions were a bit small when it came to the burger and chips meal and kids meals. Comparing it to what others had on other tables after our food was brought to us. Kids nugget and chips meal, there were literally 8 chips on the plate.

We were served at lunchtime by Glyn. Party of 6. Glyn was friendly, able to answer all our questions, made us feel very welcome and processed our food and drink order quickly. The food was excellent and very warm, we didn't wait long. Will definitely be returning and impressed with excellent customer service from Glyn and his colleagues.

Manager and waiting staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. Our meals were served promptly and the quality of the meals was excellent. Would certainly recommend to others.

The food was lovely, the seating area was well laid out and very clean. The menu had a varity of choice, which is reasonable priced. I'm feel disappointed about the lady servicing us ignoring my mum and kept talking to me as if I were her carer. My mum has a voice of her own and is able to make her own decisions. The lady serving us treated her like she was invisible. She ordered her food, and the lady serving said she hadn't, although my Dad and I heard her, so she went without a main. My mum became upset because when she asked for a rocky road ice cream, the lady turned to me asking, does she want a child's portion of 2 scoops? This is undermining and disrespectful to anyone regardless of their age or possible disability. This experience spoilt our whole experience, and although my mum has had a mini stroke, this isn't acceptable. She can still communicate clearly.

What a fantastic, homely and traditional pub. Helen in particular was so lovely and helpful.

Well, that's the first time I've been scalded in a restaurant by chicken juice out of a burger! I took a bite, and scalding hot chicken juice sprayed my face - I spent the rest of the meal with ice in a tea towel stuck on my face because of the burn on my cheek. The waitress was concerned and often asked how I was doing. However, when I asked for some money off the bill, I was told, " No, please come back again for a free coffee." "What about the coffee I just had? Can't you take it off the bill?" "No, sorry" Huh

We had a rather unpleasant experience, bordering on discrimination, at a pub we came across on our way back to London today. Since all the pet friendly gastropubs in the area were fully booked, we called this one and were surprised to get a table with table service. When we arrived, the pub was completely empty—no one at the bar, no pints being poured. A male waiter approached to take our orders, and we asked for Sunday Roasts. He informed us they had run out, so we politely requested a couple of minutes to look at the menu again. To our surprise, as he walked away, we heard him let out a long sigh—clearly annoyed at the idea of coming back. Only a minute later, he returned and curtly told us to place our orders at the counter, then walked away again. While this wasn’t a huge issue, it was undeniably rude. Moments later, we noticed that Caucasian customers who arrived after us were being served at their tables. What made matters worse was that we were still charged a service fee, despite having to order at the counter. After the meal, I discreetly spoke with the young male owner, hoping to share my experience constructively. Unfortunately, he became defensive and insisted his staff had done nothing wrong. I gave it my best effort and left, saying we’d have to agree to disagree. (This kind of resistance to feedback would never fly in London’s F&B scene. How difficult is it to accept an alternative opinion?) What made the situation even stranger was the owner following us outside, passive-aggressively declaring we wouldn’t be welcome back at the pub. I almost laughed. The conversation had been calm and professional—my intent was simply to offer feedback, not start an argument. The irony was, we weren’t locals and had no intention of returning to this out-of-the-way pub anyway. We would probably forget about it by the end of the day. In retrospect, it’s a relief this isn’t our local. The food was averaged, and the service, at best, discriminatory. If only the owner had been more professional and mature, taking a moment to empathise with customers and listen to their concerns. Having worked in F&B myself, this kind of engagement was part of our daily routine. The fact that every other pub in the area was fully booked while this one was empty speaks volumes about the quality of its food and service. One thing we did learn from this unpleasant experience: we’ll be appreciating our local pub by James Blunt in Chelsea even more from now on. You don’t realise how lucky you are until you encounter places like this. I'd suggest the young owner take a humble step and visit our local pub to learn a thing or two. My two cents. Drinks are on me!

Albeit we were at a wake having come from the crematorium the atmosphere was non existent. The bar that was nearest to the lounge area wasn't being served from and we were directed to the other bar down a few steps, then the bar staff would appear at the other bar? Pointless! £4.60 for a Can of draught Guinness!! Then, paying by card hit the green button if you'd like to leave a tip!!! The filtered coffee was weak, see through! Two additional deserts were ordered, £6 each, looked like the server had a hard time keeping her mitts off 'em! Overall it was poor.

Met up with ex work colleagues for a meal and catch up. Excellent food and excellent service. Thanks
