Very good food lots of veg and lots to eat Saturday now a good evening lots of water and a good dinner

Food lovely, fairly quiet on Friday at 7pm. Toilets pretty disgusting by the end of the evening

Chaotic and over booked. The staff worked hard to try and keep on top of a losing situation but arrived to be told it was a 20 minute wait for a table despite booking, and made to sit in the bar area where the tables were covered in half eaten plates of food, cups and glasses. After about 25 minutes, we were shown to our table and then had to queue for over 30 minutes to actually get our food. The sides buffet area looked like a bomb had been dropped on it and It's not an experience I would wish on anyone.

It's OK food, not at its best, staff are pretty cheerful, I just don't understand the macaroni cheese with roast dinner?!?!?!

Fine foods 😃 plenty of choice, reasonable price, make sure you book though, always a pleasure to visit, the staff are very accommodating, the menu has changed and the prices have gone up but still good value and worth a visit

The meal was absolutely wonderful for the price paid. The premises was extremely clean and well laid out. The members of staff were extremely polite. Will definitely be eating in premises again in the near future. Friends and relatives made aware of our experience.

Food plain, potato were hard and chewy which we both left. The rest of breakfast was fine. Service was top, Gianmarco and Phil were exceptional. Overall good experience. We will come back for the the roast dinner.

Came her for a bite after work - Received a Toby deal in the email Carvery for £6.00 booked a table ahead - ordered one meat and one meat free carvery In hindsight should have just ordered two meat and give the meat to the other person Monday - Friday price carvery 1O.79 Meat-free carvery that's saves you £2 - £8.79 not sure how they do the carvery for £6 but for meat eaters worth the money ! perhaps they could do a meat free deal for £5 !! advise booking a table Cauliflower is definitely not cauliflower cheese

Food was surprisingly good, the waitress was slow, but she seems to have a large section to run where all tables were full. Strange as there were several areas of the restaurant that were quiet?

Absolute shambles wouldn’t waste your time

The restaurant is quite large, so there is plenty of room to queue. This means the queue is long, and you can be queueing for 30mins or more. This spoils the experience. The food was very good so it is up to you to decide if the wait is worth it

Very good roast at a good price

I booked the Toby Carvery for myself and two cousins from London. I was not disappointed. It was a lovely dining experience. My cousin is gluten intolerant and the duty manager did everything possible to make sure my cousin felt safe. The chef was also extremely knowledgeable and even prepared a portion of cauliflower without the cheese sauce. The staff were all excellent and I would highly recommend dining at Toby Carvery Downlands.

Mac and cheese is amazing and is the only time it’s acceptable to add gravy to Mac and cheese. YUMMY. I love the gravy too. Yum x2

Regular diners and chefs are always friendly and great to the kids when they ask for extra yorkies! Always plenty of options and meat well cooked and presented.

Excellent food and service as always

Extensive selection of well cooked meat and vegetables which looked extremely appetising. On the downside however, the background music was unnecessary and irritating. Overall, a very enjoyable experience.

In the eaten here in the past many time. Not been here for six months, its decline was most noticeable. Three staff appeared to be running the breakfast service. A queue heading out the door, one sorting tables, a stressed cook not getting food out the kitchen and then the food quality was below par, cheap sausages, no black pudding or hash browns. A fried potatoes, I think it may of been fried mash not sure. tomatoes and baked beans were indistinguishable from one another due to the liquid content. Coffe however was good. Tried to find a member of staff, but they were just not around or rushed of their feet. Scored 1 for the food and 3 for service as the staff were doing their best. Quality, cost cutting and management failure the likely issue.

Solid choice for a family dinner. We had the carvery. The meats were fresh, portions generous. The restaurant was extremely busy, the efficient staff keep everything moving and we had only a short wait. The chef at the carving station took time to chat with customers which helped create a pleasant atmosphere. I could suggest a lot more seasoning on the veg, a good dredge of freshly milled black pepper and sea salt would have really lifted them. The restaurant was pleasant but it was very stuffy and warm inside, they have extractor fans but they weren't on. We had a glass of wine and one unlimited soft drink and it was about £40 for two which I feel is good value. (It's cheaper mid week I believe) The staff were all hardworking and friendly. Thanks for making our Sunday Lunch for us! We will be back.

I have had four deliveries from this company and to date never received what I have ordered. Last night we were missing gravy, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, Ice Cream. It took over two hours to arrive and was cold. I'm sure it's fine if you go in, but don't get a delivery as you will be disappointed.

We have been 2 a few toby carverys but we prefer this one and return here at least once a month good selection of food a nd meats & friendly staff, facebook .

Brilliant day as much as you want so lots of time to chat 🍄meet family and nice early start for breakfast. Highly recommend for meals

Always love a toby roast lovely staff and food servers .love the roast potatoes cauliflower cheese if its got lots of cheese sauce mix and now your serving parsnips im happy.

Usual good vegetable selection at the carvery but no cheesy mushrooms to start and no brie and broccoli parcel for mains. Lovely thick vegetarian gravy. Macaroni cheese starter was a bit dry and not very cheesy. No refillable drinks were available. Overall an ok experience though.

I wasn’t in so I ordered food for my son, but unfortunately the delivery driver needed a code and phoned me for it, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying at first, and then I couldn’t find the code. My son said the delivery driver was very polite.

Had lovely food with lovely company

Rude and arrogant staff. Served by a bloke, who I asked if tea or coffee was available with the breakfast to which he said NO. Only to find out for £2.60 unlimited hot drinks were available. The food which was available was cold congealed and took a lot of time to be replenished. When asked if items were going to brought out I was given the look of total disgust. Had a realy poor experience at this Toby Carvery once before with the Sunday dinner, but thought I would give it another chance. To my dismay this visit was worse than the first one.

Stopped off after a days shopping, lovely greeting from the front desk, apologise don’t know the ladies name, but very friendly and given a warm welcome, the carvery server Sparrow extremely humours and friendly. Thank you both, credit to the restaurant.

I don't understand that when you go into the carvery you have a choice of pots of veggies and when it is delivered there are just the basics? My meat was like warm but was tender/tasty enough. I think this will be the last time I order carvery online

As someone who has worked with M&B for 2 years before, this is probably the worst run place ive ever been to. Waited over 30 mins at the door for the host to be able to seat us, I had my disabled mother with me that can not stand long to the point i had to take her to a chair while i waited for the host to deal with the queue. After 30 mins we finally get a table to be sat directly next to the host stand, it was very loud and a horrible atmosphere. the waitress took over 10 minutes to even serve us, we got our food before even getting our drinks. The meat was extreamly chewy and hard to even eat. After we finished our meals with waited an extra 20 mintutes for our plates to be taken away and dessert order to be taken, we never saw our waitress after our desserts arrived, our desserts were perfect and so good that i can reccomend. after finishing I had to ask the lady at the bar to find our waitress, just so we could pay, after waiting over 20 minutes we finally paid. Usally i tip my waitresses because i was one before, but unfortunally i did not think the service i recived was deserving. Understandable it was busy but as someone who worked at the Harvester Littlehampton, our turn over rate and service was always in good time, the host was cleaning tables in a slow manner for the waitresses because they were not turning there tables over. Ive been here multiple times and never experienced shut terrible service. hopefully there will be improvements on my next visit.. Lili who was working in the kitchen that night was helpful and doing such a wonderful job, she is one top notch worker that deserves well.

Night was was not enough staff. The meeter and greeter was not very welcoming hopefully due to staff shortages. The waitress was obvously haressed too many tales to cover. The only person who made you feel welcome was the server at the carvery. Waited too long for food from the menu.

I enjoy visiting but this venue is in need of redecoration There is mold growing on walls and window frames,not in great number but obvious. Shame as the staff try so hard to.give service.

We visit every month or 2 for a roast. This visit was a disappointing compared to previous visits. We had to ask to move tables as we were seated under the air conditioning unit which was blowing a gale and extremely cold. The food, the lamb that was left was dry and fatty and previous visits we have had a choice of roast potatoes, this time there was no choice and they were very pale and barely cooked. No parsnips this time either which I love and we booked to come on a Saturday purposely to get a wider choice of the carvery. The vegetables seemed they’d been out for too long, carrots and cabbage were awfully dry so I didn’t bother. So this trip was for my birthday and I must say we were disappointed compared to our previous visits. I don’t think we’ll come on a weekend again and pay the higher price.

Very busy so for a Tuesday evening, it must be good. We enjoyed our roasts.

First time and we loved it food was great chef excellent explained all the veg options to my daughter never had that before.

We only received two of the five dishes we ordered, nor did we get potatoes or puddings and the gravy had spilled all over the bag. We tried to call the restaurant but no reply and my daughter had to go to the restaurant to get the missing meals and accompaniments / the pie,veg meal was complete but the one carvery delivered was incomplete so had to wait for the accompaniments by then everything was cold ! We really should have been given a replacement for that meal, the food was nice but cold

Booked a table for 6.20pm on line, when we arrived we had to que outside for over 30 minutes, finally got a table at 7.00pm, there is something wrong with your booking system because the only time that was unavailable was 6pm, The staff were rushed off their feet and the delay wasnt down to them, definitely a shortage of staff. If i book a table i expect the table to be ready at my booking time, especially when i was due somewhere else by the time we left the restaurant having to rush our meal due to the delay.

Had breakfast at this Toby this morning 25th August. The breakfast was probably the worst I have ever had in a restaurant, the only thing that was cooked properly was the bacon. No scrambled egg fried eggs were full of grease as were the hash browns. My partner is vegetarian we were only told about when you order breakfast you had to ask for a veggie breakfast, I would suggest information on this at the bar when you order. I will not be going to breakfast there again

Lovely place always a great atmosphere and good food

Tried to pay at the bar as waitress was rushed off her feet as clearly understaffed for this period in time. Was told that "im busy mate!" by bar staff. Nice customer service.

Came here this evening and is my local branch. An older lady on the table next to us had cut her leg and was bleeding heavily everywhere. The staff had no care, just stood there and didn’t offer help, first aid kit or even a drink for the poor lady. A first aid kit was supplied for when asked but had hardly any stock in it. Me and my friend ended up taking matters into our own hands and helping bandage her leg and clear the place up. Surely there is a duty of care/ basic first aid training in case of these incidents. Staff were rather rude about the whole situation and didn’t have any care.

ordered starter bundle and didn't get the mac cheese and ordered cheesey mushrooms which says it comes with bread but no bread in order either

This is our second visit this month and both times long queues for the roast it is not helped when the chef keeps stopping to carve for your takeaway service it should be kept separate also last night Saturday 17aug the chef disappeared for at least 5 minutes to get another turkey he should have runners to do that also he changed some of the vegetable pots it was a one man band also maybe look at the way you carve as you serve maybe carve a good few portions this would cut down queueing time which was about 15 minutes our table was booked for 1840 and we sat down at 1910 the table next door thought we had gone home and they had eaten their roast and started on desert. Not a good experience for us . I think your front of staff team needs to be more involved with customers whilst queuing.

Sally was a brilliant waitress, friendly & attentive. Food was hot & fresh , plenty of choice. Clean and tidy deck, nice big table.

Really dissapointed. Hardly any meat most of the gammon was fat roast potatoes tiny veg undercooked

The staff were having trouble replenishing the food pots in time due to a high demand of take away food which seemed to be a higher priority over people sitting in to eat so we were left standing at the counter waiting I had to prompt the counter staff which food pots needed replenishing

Got to the carvery Food could of been hotter . Sbd eggs would if been good if run and hard ,and looked like slapped on the tray. Fresh mushrooms would of been good. But to be hit would of been better . 4th time there hasn't changed .

This is a pretty standard Toby carvery, by which I mean good food (but always best to go when it's busy as it's that bit fresher) and helpful staff. The problem here is the outside of the restaurant - it looks like an abandoned building. The bushes / weeds are overgrown and the grass hasn't been cut in months. The paths look like they lead to a haunted house and no one would want to sit at the outside tables for fear of the brambles sharing your lunch. It's even more of a shame because it could easily be a lovely place to spend time, but significantly let down by the lack of external maintenance.

Lovely dinner, food was fresh and delicious. First time having puddings which were really good. Staff were busy but friendly and attentive. Didn’t wait long for anything. I will definitely go back again. Great value for money.

When we arrived it took a very long time before we were attended to. The restaurant looked untidy with empty tables with plates and glasses waiting to be cleared. After being seated and ordering drinks we joined the queue for the meal, which moved fairly quickly. The drinks didn’t arrive for ages (halfway through the meal) The food was ok but service was terrible. As it was a warm evening we decided to have a drink in the outdoor area (can’t call it a garden or pleasant space) after waiting ages for bar service l resorted to calling them on the phone to see if they were serving drinks without meals. Needless to say no one answered the phone. DONT BOTHER

Decent portion definitely worth a visit.

5 of us went last night,waited 15 minutes to be seated,the chef came out to apologise but wasn’t sure how to use the computer which was fine as at least he acknowledged us,we were eventually seated by I’m assuming a supervisor,then got fed up of waiting to be served so went to get food,then went to order our drinks at the bar as still no one appeared to take our order. The food was ok ,eventually a waitress came over to ask if everything was ok,never had such bad service from here ,thankfully the chef was great !! You need more staff !!

We don’t have Carverys in the USA and totally enjoyed the huge helping of great food! We came for our dear friend’s 93rd birthday!

Disappointed with selection of vegetables as on previous visits they always had a varied selection. It's been a while since my last visit, and the restaurant is looking tired and maybe needs a refit. The food was warn, not hot, and 3/4 regular choices missing.

Fancied a roast, and came here, the system had crashed so there was issues getting a table however the guys were polite and apologised for the issues and wait and corrected as soon as they could. We were seated for over 15 minutes before anyone came to take drinks order. We queued to get our meal, which is expected on a Sunday as normally busy, how every we were delayed as the server was running backwards and forwards to the kitchen as things were running out and he didn’t seem to have any help, at one point I asked if he was ok as he looked like he was going to pass out. My daughter wanted ice cream and again we had to wait, I wanted to ask for the bill but she was gone in a flash before we could ask, we then proceeded to wait for another 30 minutes as we couldn’t get her attention due to her not even looking towards our table before we could pay, we could have quite easily walked out and no one would have noticed. Seriously short staffed especially for a Sunday which is a shame as we normally like coming here, but it is an experience that won’t be rushed to be repeated

food was shocking and the person that cut my meat up didn’t give me enough , good thing is i didn’t get ID for alcohol , pudding was good tho i recommend the sticky toffee pudding.

Brilliant quality food and service

Pulled up @ 10:26 Thursday , once seeing our headlight’s pan into the car park , You clearly see a female member of staff walk briskly & lockthe door A family member just needed a sugar drink obviously not a full meal while we all waited in the car.. irrelevant of why we came back , we could left our phones keys wallet. By all accounts it’s meant to close @ 11pm , but the regional manager tells them they can close @ 10:30 if no-one is there . That explains the brisk walk. 👏

Arrived for a quick carvery on our way to catch a ferry from Newhaven. Asked for a table for 2 to be told by they were fully booked, we could see at least a dozen or more empty tables and there was no queue at the carvery! We love Toby but won’t bother with this one again.

Awful food today! Potatoes were all actually rotten and not edible ! Also the stuffing was black and rock hard! Only thing edible was the gravy!
