Toast in West Devon

We have been trying various coffee shops in Okehampton, but this is our 2nd visit to Toast as we love the atmosphere, food and coffee. Looks like we have settled on our favourite. Lovely service, comfy varied seating, gorgeous cakes.

First time great toast will surely be in again.

Great place, called in for lunch just off the A30. Freshly made food, excellent banana bread.

One of the best cafes in Okehampton! Staff are so friendly and the atmosphere is fantastic. My friend and I popped in on Thursday morning, and we were able to get a pot of proper loose leaf Redbush tea (her favourite) and the best ham and cheese croissant she's ever had. I had the loaded banana bread and it's honestly one of the best things I have ever ordered. Our only complaint was our food run out too quickly 😂 we will definitely be back!

We visit here regularly. Relaxed atmosphere and good food. Service had never been anything less than excellent.

Always happy with food, drink and service here. Very dog friendly, chilled atmosphere. My son says it’s the BEST vanilla milkshake he’s had EVER!! 🤩

Went for a late lunch. Food good, service friendly bit on the slow side. Large place lacks a bit of atmosphere but they are planning a refurb.

Great coffee shop, even better now it's independent! Had a good selection of food, teas and coffees. The staff are really lovely and attentive. It can get a bit noisy at times - the acoustics aren't great, but great place to sit and relax out of the rain!

Great portions of panini and yummy salad. They had lots of scrumptious vegan cake options amazing vegan sausage panini and tuna melt was sensational. Customer service was lovely and large coffee too! Would defo recommend this spacious place to visit!

A really nice coffee house in the centre of Okehampton, under new management. Friendly staff and good choice of drinks and food at sensible prices. They are closing soon refurbishment and I'm sure it will be even nicer.

Great food and coffee but it's so big and lacks atmosphere. The new owners say plans are afoot, so Intrigued to see what they do.

This is a really nice place to get lunch. Lovely view of the cascading water from the upper area.

This is a nice place to stop off at if you're looking for a quick bite and refill some lost calories. We had takeaway coffees which were ok, but better than going to large chain coffee houses. The brownie was good, but the chocolate almond cake was a small portion so 3 mouth fulls and it was gone. We didn't realise you can sit upstairs where you can see the river, which would have been way better to look at than watching standstill traffic in the main part of the cafe. There's plenty of gluten free options, savoury and sweet for the gluten intolerant. Plenty of room inside for mum's and pushchairs. It's wheelchair friendly but no hope if you need to go to the bathroom. There's free parking for 1 hour in the Public / Coop carpark next door which should give you time to refill thd hungry kids tummies and double down on your coffee addiction

Popped in for lunch with my wife, went for the special, Pulled chicken salad, food was great, service with a smile, reasonably priced,looking forward to visiting again.

Latte was very good. Soft settees to snuggle into.

Came to Toast today with my partner and his parents for lunch. We all had either a smoothie or milkshake and one of the toasted ciabatta meals. All the food and drinks were delicious and the staff were very friendly (especially Bella who took our order and Abi who brought our drinks over). Will definitely be back soon!

Attractive and air conditioned venue perfect for a summer day in 2022, comfortable and airy. But this is what you are paying for. My bacon and Brie ciabatta contained a single tiny rasher of bacon that wouldn’t even cover half the ciabatta, and a single slice of Brie, smeared in so much cranberry jam that it overpowered everything else. Disappointing. The double espresso however was sublime, though a little too cool when served. The coffee has a sharp citrus grapefruit note running through a smooth and dark caramel base. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered a black americano after eating, and unfortunately again I was disappointed. After reading some more reviews, it appears the americanos served here are disappointing many people. The sad fact is they are just too diluted, almost filter coffee strength, with none of the flavours of the espresso. My experience: Food - Overpriced and lacking in fillings and flavour Coffee - Exceptional espresso, poor americano Venue - Hipster paradise but comfortable

We visited Toast having received several recommendations from friends. It's within easy walking distance of the station, was comfortable, spacious and welcoming and everything was served really well. Those of us drinking coffee agreed it was some of the best we'd tasted. Unfortunately they ran out of sourbread, so some of us were slightly disappointed, but ciabattas were a good substitute, all nicely served with a light salad.. There were also a good selection of delicious cakes.

Popped in for brunch yesterday. Best smashed avocado, chillis and bacon I’ve had in any establishment. Very light and airy premises with great food. Highly recommended.

Lovely espresso and a grest sandwich

I visited this coffee shop for the first time today and I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious it was inside. There is a lot of seating, tables as well as sofas, and also a little shop selling items made by local sellers which is a nice touch. We ordered cups of tea and lunch, the toasted ciabatta and the soup were both delicious. Cakes and pastries looked yummy too! Staff were very friendly and quick to help if needed. Shame it shuts at 3pm as I think you could make lots of money by continuing to serve teas/coffees, cakes and afternoon teas well until at least 5pm. As there are not many coffee shops in Okehampton. Overall a lovely coffee shop, a great place to meet friends and stop for a coffee and cake, brunch or lunch. I will be returning and I would highly recommend!

Toast has a warm and comfortable feel. It's both clean and attractively decorated and an ideal place for lunch or coffee and a meet up with friends. The food tastes both fresh and hand made and the service is friendly. Highly recommended!

Well spaced, though we only opted for coffees. Sadly, the premises closed at 16.00, which, bearing in mind the local shops went on until 17.00 and the local Supermarkets until much later, seemed somewhat previous?

En route to the RHS at Rosemoor we were recommended to visit this cafe. What a pleasant surprise! Big room with a small gift shop and a mezzanine seating area. Apart from the usual tables and chairs, they had old leather sofas and armchairs on which to relax and enjoy the food. A great selection of cakes, open sandwiches, bagels etc plus a good coffee, it was a pleasure to take some time out to sit and enjoy the break. We will certainly return.

We came to Toast for a late lunch while en route to a holiday in Devon. The huge room is pleasantly decorated and includes a little gift shop. The menu is modern lunch (beigels, avocado, hummus etc). Prices are average. The food was good, when it arrived, but the wait was pretty long so it wasn't ideal when travelling. In other circumstances it may not have mattered. Even paying the bill was quite long-winded.

Managed to pop in again last week, much more calm than the chaos of the summer and enjoyed our meal a lot. A great time of year to attend the venue as it isn’t so loud and busy! New cakes are delicious and enjoyed our experience once again. Thank you toast

Visiting Okehampton, and was recommended a stop-off here. Place was clean and tidy, with a steady stream of customers coming and going. Food very tasty, and well presented, and staff were most friendly. Would definitely go again...👍

My trip was specifically to visit the mosaic exhibition in the coffee house, by The South West Mosaic Artists Group. Beautiful work, nice selection of gift ware too. My soup was a meal in itself and the staff were very nice, even though rushed off their feet.

My partner and I have been to Toast a few times and have always had a really lovely time. We take our dog who the staff at Toast always give a treat. Toast has a good selection of food, always very fresh. Something we’ve always been very pleased with is Toast’s approach to allergens. My partner has a severe nut allergy and Toast have always taken this seriously without not allowing us to have the food we wanted, checking ingredients with us and making alternatives to accommodate. The staff member serving us shared her daughter also had a nut allergy so was very empathetic to our situation! Often we are worried about going to smaller, independent cafes/restaurants as their approach to allergens is often disappointing so we were pleased and relieved to have such a positive experience. We are looking forward to returning to Toast more in the coming months when we move to Okehampton in November. Thank you to all the staff members for allowing us to feel safe and taken care of.

Visited late Saturday afternoon when passing through the town and we weren’t disappointed! This was our second visit as we don’t live locally and the coffee is fantastic, service/staff very friendly and the seating just so comfy. Oh by the way, the cake choices and quality it excellent too. Can’t wait until we next have to travel and will call back in, fully recommended!

Maybe one star was a bit harsh but it was your Tripadvisor images which showed the superfood salads not social media. Having looked at the images and used the “healthy” filter to find somewhere to eat, we found it didn’t match what we expected by some margin. May I suggest you get the images of “food gone by” removed. It would have saved me a long journey to get exactly what you didn’t have. A summer salad wasn’t what I was after as it was a simple dish which if I’d wanted would have prepared myself. The other option also didn’t appeal. I have deleted my previous review (I think??) so it shouldn’t affect your reputation, something I don’t want to do but was annoyed having driven a distance and hobbled on my stick to your door to find not what I was expecting. Be happy and sorry I gave you cause to be upset. Huw

Visited as a family of 7. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. They moved tables to allow us to sit together and nothing was too much trouble. Great fresh light meal selection and great cakes! The brownies are delicious. Wished we lived nearer but will definitely be back when we are down at Christmas.

Visited Okehampton yesterday and found this absolute gem. Superb food and coffee and what I really love is the passion the staff have for the products they sell.Such a shame we dont live closer, we are in Ilfracombe, but if you ever decide to open here we would be the first in the queue. If there were more than 5 stars to rate you then it would be so many more.

Clean, friendly ambience, food and coffee was very good. Not cheap but not hugely expensive - I think the saying goes; you pay for what you get.

As a family of 4 adults, we stopped here for a light lunch while on holiday. We arrived at 14.28 and sat down. The waitress came over a 14.32 and said they had stopped serving food at 14.30, other than sandwiches. We asked for one of the sandwiches but they didn’t have that filling. Could we have a baguette? No, only sandwiches. Could we have a bagel but untoasted? No, that’s not possible either. We gave up on lunch and ordered a coffee. The waitress then went behind the counter, very obviously gesticulated to another waitress and they both then crouched down behind the counter talking. When they stood up, we were glared at by them. We have never felt so uncomfortable. At that point we debated leaving but as we’d ordered coffees we felt we should stay. A different waitress brought our order and then took our payment and she was friendlier to us. The only plus about it all was thankfully the coffee was good. Definitely not somewhere we would recommend and I was interested to see another review that had felt unwelcome here. I have to agree. A great looking cafe but please get staff that want to help customers! I know they stopped serving 2 mins after we arrived, but if the waitress had been friendly and joked with us that sadly we’d missed out, we prob wouldn’t have felt so unhappy with the experience.

Great coffee shop with very friendly staff. Wonderful food and most importantly good coffee. Only problem I never got to sample the very tasty looking cakes . Would recommend this place to everyone .

We stopped in here for a bite to eat at the weekend whilst visiting family, Although the food was lovely the staff were not so. I feel the setting is preferred as a locals only area and we felt out of place, we finished our food and left.

Ended up visiting here twice whilst visiting Okehampton. the cafe has an excellent selection on its menu and is reasonably priced. the staff were friendly and efficient, an excellent place for lunch or a coffee.

Courteous staff served our drinks and food to the table without a wait. The coffee was hot and good quality. The taste of the chocolate cake worked very well with the richness of the coffee.There is plenty of space and the ambience is very positive.

Really friendly and welcoming staff. Met up here with family for the first time in ages for a catch-up. Their covid safety measures are very good. They also serve you at your table. The ice cream milkshakes are so scrummy so was the iced latte (yum). Will definitely be going back

Rumour has it that the locals refer to Okehampton as Soakhampton. When it rains it rains! But this place serves great coffee in lovely surroundings all served by friendly stsff

Do not be put off by the approach. Enter to a good smell. High ceilings and 1960's vibe. Generous sandwich fillings. Good service when I asked for sandwich to share came on 2 plates with full salad side each. Doggy friendly. Pleasant team.

As I live in Sampford Courteney, toast is the only place I would go to for a nice hot cup of tea and something to eat, if I go shopping I have to stop on by first and if I finish work early then ill be heading over from Tavistock. Everyone who works there are so so welcoming, polite and very very helpful. I would highly recommend this place to eat and drink, I recommend it to all my clients and ive had good positive feed back from them. The waiters are really positive and friendly. The owner of the place was extremely warm and friendly and we were new to the area and recommended Meldon Reservoir which we visited and went on a lovely walk around. The food was really tasty and came with a salad that was expertly prepared. Milkshake I had was I little too milky and not as thick. An improvement for the future but not a hinderance.

Such a lovley place, used to go here all the time for coffee and always been served with a smile, is nice to know its still the same and a lovley place to go for a quite catch up :)

we stopped here on the way back to our holiday cottage. The place is really cosy and the food was lovely. The bacon brie and cranberry ciabatta was very nice. It was also my first experience of loose leaf tea and it was very nice. Pleasently surprised it was dog friendly. It's not advertised on the door so we were unsure until we went in and asked. Would recommend if you're in the area

I have been a patron of Toast for the last 7 months and come at least 4/5 times a week. Great coffee,delicious food and friendly welcoming staff. A real pleasure.I always look forward to my fix! 🙂

We had the most wonderful breakfast today at Toast. All the lovely staff were really nice to our puppy and brought her water and cuddles. It was a great relaxed atmosphere and we were tucked away so it wasn’t stressful. Coffee was delicious as always and breakfast was really yummy!!! We have been to toast a lot over the years but now they are dog friendly we will be back even more!!! Thankyou so much for a lovely morning xxx

I visit Okehampton on a regular basis for business and l find that Toast Coffee House is the perfect place to go to have a break and relax, as well as for meeting business colleagues........service and the food is excellent, not expensive with a good atmosphere,with comfortable sofa's to sit on, definitely a "must go" place for locals and persons like myself passing through,

We have been going to Toast for quite a long time and enjoy the coffee and light food item and the airy atmosphere of the place. Unfortunately the opening hours have been reduced recently and this has led to two wasted trips when we have been turned away at the door as staff were unable to serve us.

l visited this delightful coffee house, and was able to enjoy a wonderfully relaxed coffee and something to eat, the staff are all very welcoming, and l was able to make use of the free wi-fi.

Lots of different drinks and yummy food 🥙☕and friendly staff 😊

Food and Coffee here are good, but prices have been going up and up here recently, and opening hours have been reduced.

Popped in this morning after shopping in Waitrose

Myself and a colleague popped in for a business meeting. A lovely open space to have a meeting in but is also great for families as well. Service was fantastic and the coffee was very good with a reasonably priced Menu which caters for everyone. Would recommend this a place to visit when you are in Okehampton.

We had a fantastic lunch here, friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and my dogs were made welcome too. Can’t recommend highly enough, can’t wait to return.

I've walked past Toast 100s of times and glanced through the window but for some reason not stepped through the door-until today.

A lovely and interesting place to relax, with things for sale as well as light lunches and serving great coffee. Will definitely visit regularly.

I was early for a meeting in the town and having parked just around the corner at the Co-op (free one hour) i popped in for a coffee. This turned out to be a great chance visit. Super coffee and light lunch followed. Highly recomend it especially the kitchen merchandise on sale too.

Absolutely wonderful atmosphere, you’re made to feel so welcome by the staff. We ordered coffee and cake and could not fault it, it was fantastic! Would highly recommend to everyone, if you’re in the area toast is a must!!

After deciding on lunch in Okehampton on a Saturday we decided to try Toast again after our last visit the service was very poor and had to ask the food preparer to change her gloves to make my veggie sandwich again after watching her move cooking bacon around on a tray out of the oven then go back to my sandwich (was answered with a very sharp reply about how the know food hygiene). Sad to say at 14.45 after we had chosen out table we were informed that it was coffee only as they had stopped serving food. We could have a sandwich from a limited range. I said I'm great and selected one from the board to be informed that we could have that one. The door states last orders on a Sat 15.45.

Lovely cosy comfortable place to come for a quick bite or coffee & cake after all your shopping is done.

Frequented yet never reviewed, Toast is always busy, the staff are always amazing and the coffee is always great! I think I had the best cappuccino of my life so far today?! A simple menu done well makes for a quick and easy lunch. You can also use your own takeaway cup and fill your water bottle if you want! And yes, at breakfast time, they sell Toast!

Visited here with my husband on the Edwardian night, atmosphere was warm & comfortable, greeted by friendly staff who explained the special menu on offer. Drinks were good quality, food looked & tasted great! We enjoyed our visit yet again & we will definitely returning soon. I recommend Toast coffee house for many reasons but mainly for the 5 star coffee! Well done!

Service is fine. Several comfy sofas help to give a good experience. Food is of a good standard tho prices are on the higher side. It's a large room with a high ceiling so noise can be a bit of a problem.

Held my 50th birthday party at Toast in November. What a fab venue. Jo and chloe were really helpful with the planning, downloading a play list, arranging a dance area, accommodating drinks and food requirements, letting me decorate, which all made it really personnel. The team were super friendly and helpful on the night, helping with decorations, lights and even putting up my photo booth for me, and made sure glass was never empty! My guests loved the food, not your standard sandwiches and sausage rolls , some of the favourites were the dips, mini tarts and pizzas and melt in the mouth mini cheese scones, not to mention the meringues, chocolate brownies and cheesecakes. Drinks at the bar were reasonably priced too. Thank you to all at Toast for helping make my evening really special.

Fantastic visit here on Saturday morning for coffee & breakfast with my husband. Birthday treat, staff are welcoming, hot tasty food and amazing hot chocolate with all the trimmings. I had an enjoyable light lunch, essentially a toasted open sandwich, although I always feel that serving food on a piece of wood doesn't improve it. There are seating areas on several levels, so you can be as public or as private as you like. The main area can get a bit noisy when busy.

Stayed in Okehampton last week and came across this Coffee House. Dog friendly which was great for us. Staff were friendly and the Cappuccinos were the best we have ever tasted! Cakes were excellent! Will be going back!

We stopped in okehampton on our way from Plymouth to croyde to break up the journey for our son. Toast has good reviews so we thought we'd try it.

Love this place a great pit stop whilst passing through Okehampton. A fantastic selection of teas and even better gluten free cake to go with it. Great choice, friendly staff and a lovely atmosphere. Well worth a visit.
