TJ's Fish & Chips in West Devon

Working on the footway outside, could not resist the fish and chips, so first to order once TJ's & LJ's opened for lunch. Crispy batter, very nice cod, and sumptuous chips, completed with salt and vinegar!!

Great fish & chips. Lots of other choices as well. Staff were really polite and efficient.

We decided upon fish and chips after walking around Tavistock today, Cod was freshly cooked and flakey 'n' crispy as it should be, chips were pretty good too, the medium portions were a good size so we couldn't manage all of our chips, nice friendly staff in the shop. Not the cheapest fish and chips but they were excellent! We all know what fish and chips look like so popped a couple of old buildings in Tavistock up.

Very expensive for not great quality. Staff are friendly except for the owner who’s hit and miss on customer service. Wouldn’t return at the moment.

First time for ages we've had take away fish & Chips, I can now see why we don't bother, batter was a greasy & a under cooked gooey mess, chips greasy and undercooked, I suggest they change the oil and the chef. Fortunately we won't be returning as are not local to the are. Over priced and unfit for human consumption.

Just had Fish and chips here, best I've tasted for many a year, and the staff were very friendly and efficient, will definitely be going back.

Normally take away is very good, but yesterday disappointment, it’s all to do with crispy batter or should I say the lack of. I would presume it had been in the heater cabinet for far too long and had suffered the consequences. Trade must have been slow as the cabinet was heaving. In future I’ll be asking for the fish to be cooked fresh and if refused it’ll be so long 👋

Been a regular for ages every time i go early or late the fish n chips are always spot on and i get crispy bits the whale has i call it is extra large fish all the menu is brilliant it's consistent thats why i go there and no were else 👌 😋

The chicken nuggets were ok, but the chips were not nice at all, the flavour was so bad, they were chopped into very small pieces, as if we were given the worst bit of the leftovers. They were not eaten and ended up in the bin.

Not a pleasant takeaway today, chips are undercooked, raw and soggy, battered sausages dry and hard, our teenagers haven't enjoyed theirs either. Most of it has gone in the bin. Waste of £20.

Stale chips potatoes probably cut more than 24 hours didn’t taste good. Battered sausage inedible been in heated Cabnet a long time , grey tasteless mushy peas, the fish started of fine even though pre cooked, until halfway through then it was like eating cotton wool. I remember being disappointed here before and went thinking last time was an off day. I won’t make that mistake again.

I think there has been some harsh reviews for poor old TJ & LJ's. We've been going there for a few years now and never been dissatisfied. The food is reasonably priced, always cooked fresh, wrapped hot and the portions are just fine. The menu isn't too expansive but has everything you'd want from a decent chippy. And interestingly I get a vibe they look after some regulars from certain quarters of the community that I think is brilliant.

Lovely freshly cooked to order fish & chips and battered sausage & chips. Thoroughly enjoyed them, they were not swimming in grease and not too many small crispy chips but plenty of larger fluffy centered chips. Highly recommend.

This is a really good traditional fish and chip shop, which also has a dine in option on tables at the rear of the shop. Staff are cheerful and efficient, and the food is excellent!

We were looking for a takeaway and were directed to TJ's and LJ's and were hoping for some nice fish and chips. We were beckoned in through the window by the jocular chef who seemed somewhat desperate for custom - which was hardly surprising considering what we had. The owners' attire was covered in grease patches, which should have been a warning sign. I ordered a small chips and my friend had medium cod and chips. Small chips - they weren't joking. I watched the owner place the chips in the tray and was surprised when he only put enough to fill a very shallow tray to the top. When I unwrapped all the paper I found a shockingly meagre amount of soggy chips, not 'freshly cooked' as claimed, but limp and greasy and lukewarm. We also had to pay 40p for a tiny amount of tomato ketchup, but the wooden forks were fortunately free! We ate as much as we could stomach, then put the rest in the bin. My friend said that it was the worst chip shop he'd ever been in. We will never go there again.

As proud northerners, originating from Grimsby, we hold fish and chips in high regard! This chippy was amazing, chips were almost like mini croquettes and were absolutely lovely. Would thoroughly recommend!

Treated ourselves to fish and chips after a pretty hectic week. Really should have saved our money! Everything was soaked in grease and the fish was very flat and not at all flaky. I actually pressed my fork on the top of my fish and oil poured out. My son had a battered sausage and that was dripping in grease too. Fish shown on an empty plate to show it more clearly. Food here used to be amazing but after tonight I can honestly say we won't be going back unless there are big changes.

It is not often you find a chip shop, that has very nice chips, the batter has to be one of the best I've had, the staff are all friendly, and for a busy chip shop, the service is very efficient. There are 6 chip shops within half a mile of my house, but the wife and myself, on a Friday night, would rather travel 14 miles, for a meal we know, we will enjoy.

It's a ok place but very expensive for a fish and chip shop service is OK there us no atmosphere won't go again

I don't understand how you can boast about frying in palm oil, which leaves a bad taste. The children's menu is all fries and a small sausage.

What can I say... I had a rough day today... One of those proper flustercuck days when the universe is all dead arms and wedgies and out for your lunch money... However thanks to a spontaneous and I suspect not uncommon act of purest goodwill from the hard working staff and TJ's & LJ's fish and chip shop, I may yet go to bed with a smile and a belly full of tasty chips... Top marks, trust me folks businesses like this should be rewarded and you belly will thank me...

The food was really lovely but far to many staff behind such a small space, all on top of eachother and queuing out the front door.

Really helpful staff with ensuring the fryer was as clear of bits when asking for a fish with gluten free batter, and even gave us gluten free vinegar. Friendly staff and good food.

Sat inside and ordered, very pleasant service and ordered a medium fish and chips meal. The chips looked and tasted fine, however the fish wasn't. I find it difficult to describe, completely flat, not battered, more like sort of bread crumbed 3/4 of a centimetre thick virtually devoid of actual fish. The bill came to £16.00 which included mushy peas, a slice of bread and a pot of tea. I regularly visit an amazing Portuguese restaurant where I'm served a whole sea bass, roasted baby potatoes and salad for £16.50. I was hungry and ate it, reluctantly paid, will never return.

I've just had steak and kidney pie, chips and mushy peas, and I must say it was absolutely amazing, and the staff were brilliant, although they were extremely busy, we had great banter between us all, will definitely be going back, thankyou goes to all the team.

I ordered a childrens box, just a sausage and a handful of chips inside drink etc not provided. Very expensive at £5.20. Other meal was small and expensive, such a shame as used to be so good

It’s a shame…it seems that pre ordering doesn’t mean you’ll get it around the time you asked… spoke with manager and she clearly said food is prepared once customer pays! Because they are so busy! Had to wait for food which was under the hot plate 30 mins…now just warm! Come on guys we all love your food do better else someone else will!

An impromptu supper. Great quality and portion size. The chips were tasty, crispy, but not too crispy. Fish tender but firm, and a very thick fillet. Mushy peas.....mmmmm. Highly recommended.

We had the lunchtime special. The fish was undercooked and wet. The chips were scraps, the bread was stale and there was too much margarine on. The peas were good, but was a very small helping. The toilet smelt.

Had the privilege of meeting lj (Louise) last Friday. So efficient it was unbelievable. The fish and chips I had were so good. Amongst the best I’ve ever had. I would definitely recommend.

Twice in the past three months we have received raw fish from this provider. We no longer go there

I have been coming here for a few years now and it’s always spot on. I always get cheesy chips and ask for “enough salt and vinegar to kill someone” and they always deliver. I’ve roped multiple others into journeying into Tavistock simply for this place - gorgeous! The man with the dark hair and beard is always a super star!

Actually drive past other chip shops to come here, our family enjoys the food so much! Shame the family deal has been stopped though, as it was great value, but won't stop me from coming, just might have to steal some of the kids chips! 😆 The queuing system could be better managed and the 'in one door and out the other' method that was used during covid was really effective at getting people moving, so may be worth reintroduction

£7.20 for one yes one cheesy chips and gravy!! I could not believe it! Food was fine but the prices are way overpriced. Mickeys Plaice equally as tasty and fairly priced.

So the guy with the dreadlocks I was very lovely and happy to take my order however as soon as I walked in the young girl behind the bar (with red hair) wanted to know why I didn’t phone ahead to order because they were closing in 10 minutes. I apologised and said that I didn’t know that they closed at 8:30. The guy with the dreadlocks was understanding and said that it was not a problem and made my order but the young girl behind the bar was very rude. She didn’t say anything to the 3 people behind me in the queue (who also didn’t phone ahead). I was given the impression that I was the one at fault. Even though I came in while they were still open and serving. It’s great fish and chips and the pineapple fritters are exquisite. However the greeting that I got from the young girl when I walked in wasn’t what a customer should expect.

We ordered takeaway fish and chips as a family. The veggie burger, scampi and cod were very enjoyable. Good portion sizes and tasty chips which were all neatly packaged (the burger was even in a plant-based compostable box). The service was also fast and friendly. Would recommend.

Was told they were making fresh chips .. chips ready in 3 minutes when we got home the chips were brown and greasy and definitely not freshly made, fish was greasy and tasteless.. I couldn’t eat any of it as it looked extremely unappealing .. worst fish supper I’ve ever had.. ended up eating a peanut butter sandwich. Extremely disappointed. Will definitely not be going back

I often go to tj’s when wanting fish and chips, BUT tonight was the best I have had in a very long time …. Haddock is hard to find especially bigger than a minnow..! Lovely size, highly recommended if you want haddock. Partners cod was just as good tonight Throughly enjoyed 🤗

I'm sorry but even tho the sevice was good and the staff very freindly I feel that the price was very very high for what we ordered, 3 sausages one savaloy 4 chips 2 teas 2 can drinks and the bill was just over £35 really come on how are the average Joe able to afford just popping down the chippy at these prices, I would've understood if we have had fish, not good.

Me and My Girlfriend went here for a date. I ordered a Large Cod and Chips and we got a Pea Fritter among us. Upon opening up the wrapper (Which was very Cvnal and greasy) I notice there was a significant amount of bones in my fish, it felt like i was eating nemo as it was so frail and small yet really bony. I left a tip as i felt slightly intimidated by the man behind the counter, who was eating a burger and shouting at his employees for not giving him a sachet of mayonnaise, which i thought was very unprofessional.Finally, when my lady friend opened up her meal, which i paid good money for ill have you know, there was a hair in her fish. Upon further investigation, we came to the conclusion that it was pubescent hair. Personally this may have just a been an off day, however i was very disappointed with the service I received at TJs

The chips were really good quality, I also had a plain sausage and fish cake which were also really good. They do take orders by phone as well and party orders can be delivered. The menu is extensive, there is limited indoor seating as well.

Just had the nicest and fresh large battered sausage and chips, I'm very fussy but staff where all friendly and helpful. Also discovered they cook gluten free.

I met a friend here last evening and had a first class fish and chip meal.The lady serving us was very welcoming,tea nice and hot and lovely cups and saucers.Thank you all for a good meal,lovely atmosphere and we will be back.

Nice enough food and service but these young staff really need to show that they are taking at least some precautions during this pandemic. The website says that masks are worn though no member of staff was doing so during our visit. One female member left the building on two occasions and not once on her return did she wash her hands before serving again. This is basic hygiene at any time especially during a pandemic when cases locally are on the rise again. We will never return to eat here again.
