The friendliness and helpful attitude of the staff make the Burrator what it is. A friendly pub / restaurant and hotel. We booked to arrive late having driven down after work and were made to feel very welcome about arriving late in the evening (11pm). Check in was easy the rooms were clean and spacious. Breakfast the next day was superb. This is my second time in 2 years of going to The Burrator and both times i have walked away thinking that was an excellent experience. The beer garden area is lovely and has these cute little covered seating areas with heat lamps in them if you’re worried about getting chilly. We stopped here for lunch after hiking at Burrator. It was very busy so we didn't mind the wait, but we were not prepared for the price of our lunch. A few garlic mushrooms on toast, a very small portion of chips, ham eggs and chips, and two small glasses of wine came to £41. I know eating out is expensive nowadays, but we've paid not much more than that for four of us elsewhere. We won't be visiting again unfortunately!

I decided to go for a nice walk around Burrator with my 8 months old little one. And as a treat (because we don't go out very often) we stopped at The Burrator Inn on the way back. I was reluctant to go in as we previously had a bad experience there. But I thought I'll give it a go again! Short story long, the venue isn't pushchair friendly and the lady at the bar made a comment on that which made me feel unwelcome. The staff isn't friendly and I felt like I was in their way (the place wasn't busy at the time). On a positive note, the venue looks great, it's a shame that they have a lack of good customer service. Hospitality simply starts with being friendly and welcoming.

Firstly we weren’t greeted when we came in and had to interrupt 2 members of staff’s conversion to finally tell them we had a reservation. When we were shown to our table, the waitress asked us what drinks we wanted even though we hadn’t sat down yet, as if they were rushing us. All of the waiters/ waitresses we encountered didn’t feel happy to be there or make us feel welcomed. Everything was ok when we ordered food / drink until it took about 30 minutes for our starters to come out. And THEN over an hour for our mains to come out. When the food was brought over there wasn’t even an apology for the wait. We would understand if there was a shortage of staff etc but there was no communication or reason at all. If we had walked in without a reservation we would’ve understood the wait but this was booked well over a week in advance. Food was nice but portions were quite small. While we were eating no one came over and asked if everything was alright and initially they also forgot to bring over one of the sides. We were also not asked about any allergies. We had to ask for extra stuff no one checked to see if we wanted sauces or more drinks (all 6 of our glasses were empty) it just wasn’t a good experience. Your team needs retraining on their customer service.

First visit here in years .....food was really lovely but the staff certainly need some training on customer service!!!!!! The older lady is somewhat scary. She shouted at a man because he had his dog in the eating area, yeah OK he shouldn't have had his dog in that area , but there's ways of saying it!!!! Sorry , we don't allow dogs in this section , could I ask you to move in the other area please!! But ask nicely not shout so everyone else in the restaurant could here. I was gobsmacked , so was he by the look on his face! Then she came over barked at us had we ordered yet? Felt under pressure.....said no then 2 seconds later someone else asked the same question!! Then waited 45 mins for the starter after she had barked " have you had your starter?" Eventually after having the starter she asked me the same question again 🙄 Then her and another staff member tried taking our plates away whilst still eating and still having a fork in our hand !!!! TRAINING DEFINITELY NEEDED

One to avoid "wild mushrooms in a garlic sauce" turned out to be clearly shop bought buttons on dry toast. My partners chips came out at room temperature and our cheesecake was clearly out of the freezer and though possibly not shop bought was solid and dense. I strongly recommend avoiding the Burrator Inn, due to the attitude of the host. They are unkind, greedy, unreliable and incompetent. I was shocked and incredibly disappointed to come across such an attitude in the hospitality sector, where I would expect some degree of care for the customer, rather than a blatant, shameless interest only in profit, mixed in with time wasting and incompetence. I planned to stay at the Burrator Inn with a friend as a birthday treat, but unfortunately, due to a very serious emergency, involving a close family member, we had to rush back home at the last minute, when already nearby. Out of courtesy, I immediately informed our hosts as I would not have wanted them to be inconvenienced. While trying to organise a refund was the last thing on my mind at the time, which I said during the phone call, it was explained to me that I could get a refund via booking.com. When I contacted booking.com a few days later, they confirmed this and said that Burrator Inn also needed to confirm, and they would contact them to arrange it. After hearing nothing for a week, I contacted Burrator Inn, only to be ignored. I subsequently contacted them yet again, and they refused to give a refund, based on grounds they did not mention in the previous phone conversation, when it was agreed. Belatedly, after several conversations, and wasting my time and misleading me, they reluctantly offered a room at a later date, not much use, as I was unable to take it up, besides after being messed around so much, it hardly appealed to stay with these people. This alternative offer might have been reasonable if made straight away, followed by giving the agreed refund, if I was unable to use it. As well as the upset of the unfortunate family emergency, our spoiled weekend away being only a minor part of this, the whole episode has been compounded by the host of Burrator Inn’s greed and incompetence. I accept that technically the room was not refundable and technically they can keep my money, but they certainly should not have told me a refund was possible, only to later refuse it, ignoring messages, and coming up with new excuses for not giving it. This is completely unacceptable and an attitude I was shocked to encounter, especially in the hospitality sector. It is just not the right thing to do, to keep someone’s money in such a situation, with (as I explained) a life threatening situation involving a close family member, compounding things by messing me around, and wasting my time, adding extra completely unnecessary frustration to a sad situation. The hosts at Burrator Inn lack any decency. I would like to share a vastly contrasting experience, to lighten up this inevitably extremely negative review, and hopefully restore some faith in humanity. A couple of years ago, someone I know was renting out their spare room. A young person, suffering from anxiety issues moved in, for her first proper job. The job did not work out, and within a week, she returned home to her parents. Realising this must have been a bad setback, the deposit and entire month’s rent were refunded, including even for the week she spent in the flat. This left the person renting seriously out of pocket, the rent being their primary income, but they felt that the most important thing in the circumstances was to be kind. It is sad for those of us who go through life, treating others with kindness, and placing personal finances as a lower priority in the grand scheme of things, to come across others who do not share these values, instead do the exact opposite, are motivated primarily by greed, are happy to mislead, and gladly profit from someone else’s misfortune. Altogether, an extremely disappointing experience. I would neither want to nor recommend anyone else to stay at this establishment, with people who lack basic kindness and compassion, value only their own profit, are happy to take advantage of someone else’s emergency, thoughtlessly waste the time of a customer already dealing with bad personal news, and are unreliable in their communications.

We came to the Burrator for a family birthday, after having initially planned and booked for a roast, we were told that there were no roasts left/available. Which was disappointing. We then sat down at our table and put through our order, starters arrived promptly after, however when it was time for the main meal only 2 out of the 5 meals ordered were received. We were then asked if everything was okay with our meals -by the same waitress that had taken our order (we had to point out that 3 of the 5 meals still hadn’t arrived and by this point the two that had received their food were half way through their meal and feeling rather awkward). We were told that the ticket hadn’t printed properly so the meals hadn’t been started so we re-ordered our meals. By the time they arrived the two who had eaten had finished. Obviously fully understand that things happen, but to not have been offered any form of compensation to a pretty diabolical service was rather astounding. Have seen the negative reviews since the Burrator has been taken over, personally would avoid as we wouldn’t be going back.

We stayed for one night in July and will be staying again, however there were some shortcomings which are mentioned here only as a guide to help improve what the Burrator Inn offers in the future Not the greatest of welcomes from the staff member who booked us in but she was trying to run the bar at the same time. The room had recently been refurbished and first impressions were good. The bathroom was very nice and the usual tea and coffee were available with a kettle. However closer inspection showed a lot of dust under the table and both windows were fixed panes of glass so the only opening was a 4 inch fanlight at the top. Recognising that this might be a problem, an electric fan had been provided. The bed was comfortable. Evening meal was good- we both had homemake chicken and ham pie. The desserts were also good. However I’m not sure I would class our meal as good value for money as I thought prices were a bit steep. The dinner waitress was very pleasant as was the breakfast waiter. Breakfast was adequate. Not the normal self service buffet we are used to and therefore not a huge range of uncooked alternatives. No decaf tea and for some reason my scrambled eggs were covered with chives - not what I wanted at 8.00 am. Having said all that, we enjoyed our short stay

Vegan roast aka Wellington ISN'T served with roast spuds, in fact it wasn't until I asked where they were did someone tell me that the roast spuds aren't vegan!! Veg was bland and stringy. Gravy was ok but with no spuds it wasn't satisfactory. They did say after the food was half gone that they could do some chips with my Sunday roast! Kitchen staff may benefit from customer service training? We waited 50 minutes to be served our food (5 roasts) 3 chicken roasts were supposed to come with pigs in blankets but apparently because we ordered 2 sides of pigs in blankets we didn't get any of on 2 out of the 3 roasts! Ordered a brownie and it took 15 minutes to tell us that they didn't have any! Waiting staff had no clue what beers were available and told us to go to the bar and look! £150 (total bill) not money well spent. No one checked on us and no breakdown of the bill given! No apology.... Would not recommend

I’ve eaten here for three lunches this year. The food is great, in fact their mushroom/ sour bread starter is absolutely banging, and their tempora battered veg dish is the best version I have ever tasted because the accompaniments are delicious. My husband also really rated the belly pork.

Since being taken over by a new owner the food has highly improved. The quality of food was great, the presentation was wonderful, the combinations work very well together. Will be returning and would recommend. Service can be a little slow if the team aren't organised. Some confusion if it's table Service or order at the bar.

The pub itself is nice, but very expensive (£12 for a sandwich and not even with any garnish or chips). Sandwich was pretty bog standard

A lovely meal- we had lamb rump and trout both beautifully cooked. Service was excellent. We used to have music 🎵 on a Saturday night - soul and motown vinyl. It was a highlight of our week . Very sad this isn’t avaiable now.

We used to come here all the time as my children were growing up. We’ve loved this pub over the years but £12 for a sandwich and £5.50 for what only be described as a small tea cup for the cheesy chips is so wrong! Cheesy chips used to come in a proper plate full not a small tea cup. £23 for a sandwich and 2 cheesy chips that were around 10-12 chips in is scandalous! Will not be returning! What a disappointment! People eat out now for treats with children, we had to stop in woolwell chip shop for food on our way home. Best off sticking to the lopes if you want a nice pub up this end of the city. I would give 1 star but the staff are friendly and the place has been done out lovely. Shame about the food.

We called in for lunch, we sat in the carpark looked at the menus on line and thought we would go in🙄 (should have looked at TA first) The special lunch menu including drink didn’t have the drinks we wanted, so no issue we ordered of the main menu and order drinks separate. So far so good 😊 So we thought 🤔 We order ham egg & chips/ fish finger sandwich with a side salad. The Ham egg and chips was a joke you could see through the 2 slices of extra extra thin ham (actually is was 1 slice cut in half probably) The chips was extra small portion with the egg, you could not cover the plate there was more white plate showing than food 😩 The fish finger sandwich, was ok ish, but the side salad was a small bowl with just lettuce leaves and a bit of spring onion, £4.00 for this 😡 they must be related to Robin Hood ! If you wish to loose weight and empty you wallet, this the place visit.

Utterly disappointing. The initial welcome was warm and friendly, and our food order was taken efficiently. Then, it all began to go wrong. It was a really long wait for the food, even though it was not very busy. The prices are a bit on the high side, and the portions are stingy. If you want vegetables as a side, be prepared to pay £4.00 for a ramekin of frozen peas and over-microwaved green beans. My battered fish was overcooked and dry. The service from one female staff member was surly and almost comical. I asked for some mayonnaise, and she brought me an empty bottle. When I finally managed to get her attention, she fetched me another bottle and pretty much slammed it down on the table. I wouldn't have minded, but guess what? This one was empty, too! We witnessed a couple walk out leaving their food untouched, and another complain about a 45-minute wait, and still their food had not arrived. Red wine was terrible. Children's macaroni cheese was no more than a saucerfull. There's a reason this place was so quiet on a Saturday night!

This pub is awesome One of if not the, best pub in the area, manages to balance local and visitor vibes. The food is amazing, portions are big. The local people are very kind and helpful. The staff are very kind and pleasant. Plus it’s a stone throw from Whitchurch down for a walk. Plus dog friendly and wifi

We had not been to the Mary Tavy Inn for several years as our previous visits had been less than memorable. However on hearing a number of positive stories about the pub we decided to take some friends there for lunch. I have to say that it was a total success. The owners have clearly invested a great deal of money into the dining room which now looks the part and is very welcoming. There is little background noise, so conversations are easy to have without resorting to shouting. The menu is varied, interesting and reasonably priced; the atmosphere is relaxed and calm and the service was first class. The Mary Tavy Inn is now our go to pub when in the Tavistock area. Well done to the owners and thank you.
