Shocking service tonight, popped in at 5.45pm table for four. Told they start serving at 6.00pm. Ordered two kids burgers, one hunters chicken and a lamp rump at 6.00pm we were the first to order. 45 minutes later still no food yet 3 tables around us are all eating burgers etc and they ordered after us. Asked how much longer to be told another 15 mins. Ridiculous. Got a refund and left. Clearly they were trying to defrost the lamb.

I strongly recommend avoiding the Burrator Inn, due to the attitude of the host. They are unkind, greedy, unreliable and incompetent. I was shocked and incredibly disappointed to come across such an attitude in the hospitality sector, where I would expect some degree of care for the customer, rather than a blatant, shameless interest only in profit, mixed in with time wasting and incompetence. I planned to stay at the Burrator Inn with a friend as a birthday treat, but unfortunately, due to a very serious emergency, involving a close family member, we had to rush back home at the last minute, when already nearby. Out of courtesy, I immediately informed our hosts as I would not have wanted them to be inconvenienced. While trying to organise a refund was the last thing on my mind at the time, which I said during the phone call, it was explained to me that I could get a refund via booking.com. When I contacted booking.com a few days later, they confirmed this and said that Burrator Inn also needed to confirm, and they would contact them to arrange it. After hearing nothing for a week, I contacted Burrator Inn, only to be ignored. I subsequently contacted them yet again, and they refused to give a refund, based on grounds they did not mention in the previous phone conversation, when it was agreed. Belatedly, after several conversations, and wasting my time and misleading me, they reluctantly offered a room at a later date, not much use, as I was unable to take it up, besides after being messed around so much, it hardly appealed to stay with these people. This alternative offer might have been reasonable if made straight away, followed by giving the agreed refund, if I was unable to use it. As well as the upset of the unfortunate family emergency, our spoiled weekend away being only a minor part of this, the whole episode has been compounded by the host of Burrator Inn’s greed and incompetence. I accept that technically the room was not refundable and technically they can keep my money, but they certainly should not have told me a refund was possible, only to later refuse it, ignoring messages, and coming up with new excuses for not giving it. This is completely unacceptable and an attitude I was shocked to encounter, especially in the hospitality sector. It is just not the right thing to do, to keep someone’s money in such a situation, with (as I explained) a life threatening situation involving a close family member, compounding things by messing me around, and wasting my time, adding extra completely unnecessary frustration to a sad situation. The hosts at Burrator Inn lack any decency. I would like to share a vastly contrasting experience, to lighten up this inevitably extremely negative review, and hopefully restore some faith in humanity. A couple of years ago, someone I know was renting out their spare room. A young person, suffering from anxiety issues moved in, for her first proper job. The job did not work out, and within a week, she returned home to her parents. Realising this must have been a bad setback, the deposit and entire month’s rent were refunded, including even for the week she spent in the flat. This left the person renting seriously out of pocket, the rent being their primary income, but they felt that the most important thing in the circumstances was to be kind. It is sad for those of us who go through life, treating others with kindness, and placing personal finances as a lower priority in the grand scheme of things, to come across others who do not share these values, instead do the exact opposite, are motivated primarily by greed, are happy to mislead, and gladly profit from someone else’s misfortune. Altogether, an extremely disappointing experience. I would neither want to nor recommend anyone else to stay at this establishment, with people who lack basic kindness and compassion, value only their own profit, are happy to take advantage of someone else’s emergency, thoughtlessly waste the time of a customer already dealing with bad personal news, and are unreliable in their communications.

We stayed for one night in July and will be staying again, however there were some shortcomings which are mentioned here only as a guide to help improve what the Burrator Inn offers in the future Not the greatest of welcomes from the staff member who booked us in but she was trying to run the bar at the same time. The room had recently been refurbished and first impressions were good. The bathroom was very nice and the usual tea and coffee were available with a kettle. However closer inspection showed a lot of dust under the table and both windows were fixed panes of glass so the only opening was a 4 inch fanlight at the top. Recognising that this might be a problem, an electric fan had been provided. The bed was comfortable. Evening meal was good- we both had homemake chicken and ham pie. The desserts were also good. However I’m not sure I would class our meal as good value for money as I thought prices were a bit steep. The dinner waitress was very pleasant as was the breakfast waiter. Breakfast was adequate. Not the normal self service buffet we are used to and therefore not a huge range of uncooked alternatives. No decaf tea and for some reason my scrambled eggs were covered with chives - not what I wanted at 8.00 am. Having said all that, we enjoyed our short stay

Been popping in every now and again for a few years now and we had noticed a gradual decline in standards and hosting - This time it was frighteningly noticeable - it was moderately busy but service was slow to say the least - and when food arrived we were shocked to see how small the portions were this time !! Portion control is necessary but omg when folk are paying a decent price give them a fair portion - not every adult wants a child size plate of food !! Prob be giving the place a miss now as there are other hostelries crying out for our business

Staff ( young lady) who served behind the bar was excellent as was the older lady who brought out the food and cleared the table. Food came out quickly and cooked really well. Negative. Ordered off lunch menu.. Meal and drink £12. I joked with partner " did you order off the kids menu". Ordered fish N chips. Portion size was tiny. One of the chips was bigger than the fish. It looked like half a piece of fish ( but not quiet). About 10 chips and a few mushy peas. Have had decent meals here before, a little pricey. But will definitely AVOID the lunch set menu

Restaurant only... Did not stay in rooms. Service was ridiculously slow even though there were plenty of staff standing around and lots empty tables. Vegan roast aka Wellington ISN'T served with roast spuds, in fact it wasn't until I asked where they were did someone tell me that the roast spuds aren't vegan!! Veg was bland and stringy. Gravy was ok but with no spuds it wasn't satisfactory. They did say after the food was half gone that they could do some chips with my Sunday roast! Kitchen staff may benefit from customer service training? We waited 50 minutes to be served our food (5 roasts) 3 chicken roasts were supposed to come with pigs in blankets but apparently because we ordered 2 sides of pigs in blankets we didn't get any of on 2 out of the 3 roasts! Ordered a brownie and it took 15 minutes to tell us that they didn't have any! Waiting staff had no clue what beers were available and told us to go to the bar and look! £150 (total bill) not money well spent. No one checked on us and no breakdown of the bill given! No apology.... Would not recommend

We’ve loved this pub over the years but £12 for a sandwich and £5.50 for what only be described as a small tea cup for the cheesy chips is so wrong! Cheesy chips used to come in a proper plate full not a small tea cup. £23 for a sandwich and 2 cheesy chips that were around 10-12 chips in is scandalous! Will not be returning! What a disappointment! People eat out now for treats with children, we had to stop in woolwell chip shop for food on our way home. So far so good 😊 So we thought 🤔 We order ham egg & chips/ fish finger sandwich with a side salad. The Ham egg and chips was a joke you could see through the 2 slices of extra extra thin ham (actually is was 1 slice cut in half probably) The chips was extra small portion with the egg, you could not cover the plate there was more white plate showing than food 😩 The fish finger sandwich, was ok ish, but the side salad was a small bowl with just lettuce leaves and a bit of spring onion, £4.00 for this 😡 they must be related to Robin Hood ! Utterly disappointing. The initial welcome was warm and friendly, and our food order was taken efficiently. Then, it all began to go wrong. It was a really long wait for the food, even though it was not very busy. The prices are a bit on the high side, and the portions are stingy. If you want vegetables as a side, be prepared to pay £4.00 for a ramekin of frozen peas and over-microwaved green beans. My battered fish was overcooked and dry. The service from one female staff member was surly and almost comical. I asked for some mayonnaise, and she brought me an empty bottle. When I finally managed to get her attention, she fetched me another bottle and pretty much slammed it down on the table. I wouldn't have minded, but guess what? This one was empty, too! We witnessed a couple walk out leaving their food untouched, and another complain about a 45-minute wait, and still their food had not arrived. Red wine was terrible. Children's macaroni cheese was no more than a saucerfull. There's a reason this place was so quiet on a Saturday night!

Very small portion of chips [approx 15 or 16] which were ok. Couple of dozen peas. No-one asked if our meal was satisfactory. Sounding like a real moan, however, i have always given honest reviews. A disappointing experience all round having stayed for 2 nights and eaten at the Inn for both. It's clearly a locals stop off and can get somewhat noisy if 'the lads' are playing pool in the bar area. The service and food were both a bit lack lustre and not particularly enjoyable. OK we were not expecting gastro-pub or fine dining, but the standard and quality of food was below par. Our room was at the rear of the hotel and overly hot due to a piping-hot towel rail; the window was small and did not help to vent out the hot air, plus we were near the kitchen ventilation/ducting area which was on until late. The bed was fine and all was clean, so no complaints there....but it certainly didn't feel like the pre-booking photos of the place. In essence, this is OK for a stop-over if you've plans in the area but I wouldn't recommend eating here. The best bit is being close to Burrator reservoir and mile or so down the road from the Inn.

Burrator Inn Lunch deal £11 Last time I visited the Burrator Inn I was staggered by the cost: a glass of wine for the price of a bottle in some other pubs! So when a friend told me of their lunch deal - lunch and a drink for eleven quid we thought we'd give it a go. Tuesday lunchtime was in no way runaway busy but the way we were greeted was quite offhand, especially when we asked for the lunch special. It was not offered even though it was a 'special'. After 25 mins were were told they hadn't put the order through. We weren't offered anything in recompense until I went up to the bar and gently ask for some more drinks whole we were waiting. Again, was disappointed that I had to ask, especially as they sent the junior waitress out to tell us. I always feel its something the leadership team should own, as they have the authority to make a goodwill gesture  50 minutes after our order, the food finally arrived. My portion of sausage and mash was tiny. I know small plates are fashionable, but this was risible. Two small sausages and a couple of spoons of mash. For 11 quid, it's simply not worth it. My wife had the fish finger sandwich, again not the most massive portion. Only after we left did she tell me it was lukewarm at best. So it must have been my meal that wasn't ordered and hers had been left to cool. Then they tried to charge me for the 'complimentary drinks'.

But I particularly enjoyed the Cafeteria with decaffeinated fresh Coffee from South America? Full English cooked Breakfast was very filling and I requested any additional cereal. I will definitely be coming back here to stay. Though I heard it can get busy in the Summer! It was ideal for me at that beginning of March. I questioned the manager (person behind bar) she was very reserved and almost startled to be asked. I suggested it was on the website and she begrudgingly acknowledged it and allowed us to order. What came out was the worst food item I have ever ordered. Not much more than a kids menu. Ham egg and chips.......a handful of chips, a couple of thinly sliced bits of ham and an egg. Very poor. We had just been on a lovely long walk around Burrator Reservoir and booked a table for 6 at the Burrator Inn for a nice relaxing family meal. Not long after we were seated, a waitress (older than the rest) snatched a wine glass from the table and said 'you wont be needing this!'...did we look bedraggled or something...not good enough for a glass of wine? As it was I settled for a cocktail which was nice. The meals took a good while to arrive (the place was reasonably quiet) and the portions very small considering the price, the puddings also took an age to arrive and were also very small, thank goodness we didnt order the childrens portion for the kids. The staff could do with cracking a smile now and again, the older waitress...RUDE. The male that greeted us and took payments was courteous and friendly, the females should lead by his example. If you are going to the Burrator Inn for a hearty meal and are hungry after a good long walk, I would not recommend the Burrator Inn. The food tasted nice, just need bigger portions.

Not usually one to leave a poor review of a business but truly mean for this to be useful feedback. The restaurant itself is lovely - log burners, cosy atmosphere and some nice touches like the personalised reservation signs. The food was also fresh and tasty, no issues and arrived quickly. The missing piece is the front of house, staff are friendly but lack direction. It all seemed a bit disorganised and frantic when the restaurant wasn’t even at half capacity. Our food arrived before our drinks, these things happen, and we were told they would be on the house - the drinks were wrong when they finally arrived and were still on the bill when I settled up, not fussed about freebies but the inconsistent communication is frustrating. With the right direction this place could be a lovely dinner spot, just needs to get the details right on the customer facing side, unfortunately we were left underwhelmed for the price point.

Chicken was Luke warm and soggy and wet as slaw was in the burger and would have been better on the side, definitely half a breast of chicken as was really small, Fries lovely and hot and crispy but not many at all and came with a mayo which had definitely been sat in a ramekin for a while as seemed to off colour on the surface, whole plate just looked chucked together not very attractive and for over £15 I personally thought was poor, wife’s lunch was ok apart from hardly any fries. Would we go again… possibly ..although table next to us where asking for refund on fish finger sandwiches so probably would rush back, also older lady FOH was very pushy. Used to come here regularly. So decided to revisit. Shown to table in the restaurant and waited .............. After 20 mins my friend went to the bar to order drinks but was told no it's table service . So he came back and we waited another 5 minutes to order and another 5 minutes to get the drinks. We ordered food which also took ages to arrive. Food overall was good ,but we both thought not value for money. Got the bill to find that Neck Oil beer was £6.10 a pint 😮 We did mention to the person behind the bar about the slow service. It was because there was only one person in the kitchen.. So that's my problem is it ? Overall got the impression that we were a bit of an inconvenience . Won't be going back.

Really disappointing meal. Fish and chips, smallest fish, greasy, overcooked and very little fish inside the batter, cold peas. This is the first review I have ever left because I feel so strongly about the poor quality of food. I will never return and not recommend the burrator inn to anyone, sorry. There is no need for poor quality leaving customers feeling ripped off and disappointed.

We drove here in our campervan to have a meal and an evening of music because they have a great carparking area We were told that overnight stays were not welcome, Shame really because campervanners can bring great business, for evenings and then a good breakfast, we've found some lovely other places that welcome our business nearby.

The Burrator Inn is located in Yelverton on the edge of Dartmoor. All welcome including dogs. Parking available on left of venue. Came on Bonneville Bobber so parked on tarmac area to avoid loose chippings (laid on rest of car park area), damaging bike. Had light lunch consisting of a mix of starters (4 for £24) which was delicious. Chose Pork Belly Bites (presented in balsamic vinegar glaze dressing, finely chopped spring onions, chillies & sprinkled with sesame seeds), dish of apple sauce, houmous (with pomegranate & pumpkin seeds) with toasted warm flat breads, chicken goujons & mayo, roast potatoes. All presented beautifully. To accompany lunch had pint of lemonade & lime. Highly recommend. Staff very pleasant & welcoming.

We stayed here for my husband’s birthday we were a bit perturbed when we arrived as there was a sign outside that said music all night on Saturdays & we are a family with one child. We booked a table for 7.30 but were told we had to be there at 6.30, okay fair enough as the pub doesn’t have anywhere else around it within walking distance to eat we had to go along with it. When we arrived the waitress showed us to our table which wasn’t the table we were shown when we checked into the hotel, she told us that there were no tables available especially the one we were shown previously & she was exceptionally rude in telling us this! During our time at the restaurant nobody sat at that table!! We ordered drinks which she got wrong then as it was a special occasion we ordered the £30 steak, it was a frying steak & tiny portion-see picture. You can see that the tomato (one tomato, may I add) is half the size of the steak & the tomato wasn’t even a beef tomato! So OVER PRICED, the steak was chewy. My fish and chips arrived COLD! Then we ordered a cheese board that we wanted to take to our room we were EVENTUALLY told again in an aggressive manner ‘we don’t have any cheese’. We decided to make a move to our room but first paid for our meal the waiter asked if everything was okay to which I replied’No!’ I told him about Fish and Chips then showed him the picture of the steak & said ‘would you pay £30 for that’ to which he just grunted. I asked him if he could do anything to compensate for this to which he replied’No!’ Then I asked to see the manager to which he also replied ‘No!’ We went to our room with music blaring until early hours! If you are considering staying here or eating then I would think again!

Popped in here for a quick meal. It was cold inside apart from a lovely roaring fire. Unfortunately we couldn't get anywhere near the fire as two people were sprawled over the chair and the sofa, respectively. We asked if we could sit anywhere nearer the fire to eat but were ignored, despite there being a table next to the fire in the dining room. The huge dining area was completely empty. The bar lady wasn't very welcoming or helpful. Won't be going back.

Lots of potential. Speed of food wasn’t bad and the roast itself was ok, but at £19 you expect a bit more. If you have to pay extra for cauliflower cheese it better be cheesy! No veg with the child’s food. The children’s ice cream scoops were criminal and we mentioned this twice to different staff. the lad was licking the bowl as it was so miserly but no offer of another scoop or an apology! As they were so casual about it we didn’t leave a tip and we always tip! Like i said, it’s a nice country pub and has potential but just a few improvements and a bit of staff training needed. Will come back for a drink again for sure. Has to ask for the bill twice.

Really nice location with an ideal distance from the moors but yet easy to get to. Plenty of seating and not an eyebrow lifted when dining in hiking boots. Really cosy restaurant with a nice mellow atmosphere. In regard to the meals, I would suggests you avoid wasting your money on the sausage and mash. I was assured by our waiter that the dish would be sufficient however the dish I recieved was far from it. 3 Cumberland Sausages sat on top of mash. That was it. For the price of £14.50. Somewhat insulting. Other than that we had a lovely evening. I have attached a photo of my sausage and mash dish.

Arrived after a long walk and given room key which didn’t work. Changed key. Got into room to find it is ok but peeling paint, mildew in bathroom, blinds don’t work but nothing too awful. Go down to dinner where nobody seems to have a handle on what is going on. Get to our table and decide what we want. Waitress takes our order but told first choice sold out. Quickly go to second choice but this also not available. Ask for a couple of minutes to consider third choice. Make a decision despite not really wanting anything else only to be told that this isn’t available either. Make hurried fourth choice but then realise I really don’t want this so cancelled order. Told we must order quickly if we want anything as kitchen closing. Made distressed choice. Chicken and Ham Hock pie doesn’t really taste of anything. Nobody asks how our meals are. Eighty one quid for meal that is mediocre at best. Retire to bar where there is much shouting and swearing; much, it turns out, from people who work there. The jazz, Motown and soul music promised on the posters turns out to be nothing of the sort so give up and go to bed. Woken in the early hours by somebody swearing and shouting as they stumble to the staff accommodation above. Not a good night’s sleep. In fairness breakfast is good and service better but can’t wait to leave. Nobody asks how our stay was as we leave. Was never really sure who was supposedly in charge but it was mostly a bit shambolic. Had been here many times previously, albeit some time ago, but not somewhere you could recommend sadly. Go somewhere else

Sadly, we’ve just left this pub after a lovely walk to sheepstor. The kids were hungry so we thought we’d stop by for a pint and bowl of chips to complete a lovely afternoon ! We paid £4 for literally a handful of chips, it was honestly disgusting! We bought 3 portions which together would not have even made up a full portion for £12, seriously ! Normally I would have complained and asked for a refund, but as we had Spanish friends with us, I was highly embarrassed and didn’t want to make a scene ! The kids were hungry too, but of course still hungry afterwards ! The chap behind the bar was very nice and atmosphere nice, but that has put us off going back, an absolute rip off ! I wish I had taken photos for this review, but again didn’t want to embarrass our Spanish friends !

Under the previous licencee's, Phil & Sarah, the Burrator was a friendly, sociable pub, welcoming locals & visitors alike. Since it's refurbishment it's changed & although decoratively, it's much improved, it no longer has a welcoming feeling. At best I find most of the staff are generally indifferent to the needs of customers. Such a pity, as potentially, the Burrator could be a very good pub.

We visited for a nice beer after our hike. Staff were friendly and quick service. Timothy Taylor’s on tap was fresh and delicious. The food, contrary to some recent reviews, was tasty, with some surprising, innovative flavours, not too expensive, and all hot and well made. The atmosphere was great, chilled music, seems to be a nice locals pub, and dog friendly. Nice to play a game of pool too! Would definitely recommend, and suggest not believing all of the recent negative reviews. We will certainly visit again.

The way I see it this place is going to have to choose between being a decent gastro-pub serving well cooked & priced, innovative food with an excellent wine list in attractive surroundings or a place where the local youths can gather & shout & swear round the dart board. It's a shame if they choose the latter but it's their call

Appalling attitude We booked a Christmas meal for 12 and were requested to arrive at 11 30 to have drinks when we paid the deposit. On arrival the Inn was shut and we were told we had to wait outside in the rain until 12. When we expressed our surprise and said we weren't happy the response from Staff was Whatever! We left and won't be back.

We booked a Christmas meal for 12. Website and all signage said the inn was open from 11am. We arrived at 11:30. Door was locked and man inside tapped his watch and would not let us in. Staff eventually opened the door and told us shortly they would not open until 12 and we would have to wait outside in the rain until then. Not a very warm Christmas greeting. We were appalled at the attitude and left.

Like many Pubs they are having problems recruiting staff in this case in their kitchen. I ordered French Onion soup which was cold on arrival and had to be reheated. It tasted more like gravy with onions. Other members of our group were also presented with cold food which had to be reheated. On the positive side it was acknowledged by the member of staff behind the bar and the cost of our drinks were removed from our bill.

I hadn't been to the Original Pasty House in Plymouth for a while but found it alist deserted apart from the staff when I went there this afternoon at around 2pmish. I was quite shocked as it's usually been busy when I go there but I soon realised why it was empty. Apparently less quality and more pre-made food has been deemed more appropriate for the Plymouth customers. I chose a pre-packed wrap, had it toasted but struggled to eat it as it feels fell to pieces and was watery. The wooden cutlery didn't help either and even if you eat inside the shop you have to have a takeaway cup. The cost has also risen despite less quality. I doubt I will ever eat there again, thanks to the owner's poor decisions.
