Visited for Sunday lunch Had £80 menu with 2 choices for each course. Lovely ambience and excellent sevice thoughout so much so that we did'nt leave until 4.30 Food some of the best my wife and I have ever tasted and all presented perfectly as befits a high quality restaurant such as Timberyard Will definitely revisit when next in Edinburgh

My favourite place in Edinburgh. It's not just about the food but the whole experience, from welcome to getting your coat and a sleepy tea to enjoy at home when leaving. Everything is so thought through and special. I love the drinks pairing as they serve things I would never normally consider or order myself. The fact that they make so much in house makes it even more enjoyable. Not a place for a quick bite and a show, it's truly a whole experience just to dine at Timberyard.

Wow! Loved this place! We had the taster menu and accompanying wine. Every mouthful was just incredible, the wine perfectly paired to the course. Attentive, but not over bearing staff who had a passion for the food and wine they were serving. This is just one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh and Scotland. If you can get a table go...

Very overrated. Pleasant, kind staff. Some tasting menu dishes very average, a couple were lovely. Drinks not worth the price. One of the 7 paired drinks for £120 is about 75mls of 5% alcohol. A pleasant meal for two with paired drinks if priced at £300-400 but definitely not worth the £620 price.

A long awaited return to what had been one of our favourite restaurant experiences a few years ago. We had lunch which was £80 each. The food was very well executed but the starters included chicken liver parfait - hardly a Michelin star wow-factor dish. The 'main courses' were very limited in portion size (very small quail legs and breasts, 1 spring onion piece and some puree and foam only), followed by an attempt to upsell a cheese course at a further £9 per cheese! Wines by the glass were not listed and prices not revealed until the bill came (an eye watering £23 for a small glass of Italian red). The dining room was not sufficiently heated to the point my nose and hands were cold. It was a cold day outside, but this is surely inexcusable. A diner at the next table was wearing a woolen shawl throughout their meal. Overall, it was obvious to us there was an attempt to squeeze margins beyond the point where diner experience was compromised. We won't be back.

Specially located on the edge of Edinburgh Castle. You can choose between a 5-course menu or the extensive tasting menu. Of course we took the tasting menu. There is a lot of nice explanation about the dishes and even a separate session about the ingredients. All dishes were very tasty. The quail was the main course and was perfect. Lots of appetizers that they call snacks here. A visit to the basement where the toilets are located is a must... the drip sounds let the imagination run wild as to what could have happened here😎

The atmosphere and deco are thoughtful, but the food and service are overrated for a one-star Michelin. They even forgot to serve the bread to our table, and we needed to remind them after the first course. The other tables were all served promptly with bread and other service. I am not sure if we were their target customer. Quite disappointed in not treating all the customers the same way. What a waste for such a nice environment.

Incredible service and atmosphere. The staff were friendly and the overall experience was enjoyable. However, apart from the dessert and some of the intro snacks, the 5 main courses were very middle of the road, especially considering the very very high price and Michelin star. Nothing was bad, but the food came up short.

Best Michelin star restaurant I’ve been to! Everything was exceptional especially their friendly and accommodating service. They make everything in-house which made the experience interesting since I really appreciated the effort and thoughtfulness they put in every dish! And all the proteins was cooked to perfection. I rarely get taken away from eating but this was a memorable experience I cherished! I didn’t regret any ounce of penny i spent, since every dish had a story behind it. I recommend their drinks pairing with the tasting menu aswell especially when they have good relationship with their suppliers aswell as procuring small vineyards! Well done 🤙🏾

We were there with a group of five. The food was excellent, the drinks pairing (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), however, was not convincing. Service was very good with one exception: One of the wines, a Vinho Verde, was too dry and did not match well with the food. When we were asked whether everything was to our satisfaction, we mentioned the wine, but there was no reaction whatsoever. Hence, only four stars.

An overall pretty nice moment and experience. Food was good and the service was lovely. However, the wine paring we had was pretty disappointing I have to say. The wines were not matching so well with the dishes and had to return once my glass for that same reason (or maybe being French makes me too demanding regarding wine?). A bit expensive as well for the quality of these wines (100£ for 5 glasses ! )

There are good things here, but its cost far outweighs the quality of the experience. If you would expect to spend £550+ on a tasting menu meal for 2 regularly, then feel free to try. To anyone else, I encourage you to note the reoccurring themes in other reviews. Quality was good, technique mediocre, but quantity / value-for-money and resulting satiety were the poorest I have ever had in a tasting menu. The Service: This was the best part of the experience, easily. Everyone we spoke to was nice, and I was also pleased the offhand comment I'd made that it was my wife's birthday was remembered. There were ~10 waiters walking around, all with no clear assignment. I was a bit surprised, though, to hear the person with the cheeseboard try saying £9 a slice with a hint of "only / now reduced" and not see a look of embarrassment. The Atmosphere: The space is nice but a bit too dark. The folk instrumental music playing in the background was just loud enough to distract when listening to each other, and it was made louder as the restaurant filled-up. The space has a pleasant buzz, but I think that came from the staff and their brief attempts to converse outside their sales-opportunities than to the background din. The light was so low it made it hard to properly see and appreciate the food, most of which seemed to be presented very carefully, but due to the low light, it lost some of its impression. The Food: The meal started well. We had the full tasting menu, which started with a little bowl of excellent broth, 4 or 5 small plates of pickles, bresola (1 slice each), and other nibbles. A pleasant velouté and foam with eel appeared soon after was the high point. However, the next 5 courses were unremarkable. The little details we liked, like pickled pine cones or sauces, were all disappointingly and inexplicably miniscule. We elected to pay for the extra oysters and asked for extra bread and butter (resulting in confused eyebrows), but despite this, the meal was not satisfying. We both left feeling unsatisfied. The Wine: I ignored the feedback in multiple reviews. The wine pairings I was offered were disappointing, easily the worst I've had in a restaurant, made all the more disappointing having paid £125 to be able to make that claim. The first 2 were passable, not great pairings, but interesting enough to avoid ire. The next 5 were lamentable, shades of the same nonsense bio-wine (small independent producers, all with interchangeable stories). I made the hopeful suggestions that I preferred not to have only bio-wines and get some traditional classics, but mysteriously that was ignored. (Presumably, they never had any reason to open them to serve by the glass.) There was no concern whether I enjoyed them or what I thought of it, again leading to the feeling of a product created simply to maximise their profit. I am loathed to say it, but my impression leaving was that this could have been a good experience. However, by taking every opportunity to force upselling or cost-cutting with the abysmal wine menu, we left feeling the experience was much closer to Ryanair than a Michelin starred restaurant. Relentlessly upselling products really doesn't contribute to the feeling of a special, luxury, or even enjoyable experience.

We have dined at Timberyard before and since the Michelin star accolade. Our experience on Saturday was very disappointing and felt very different to previous visits. What’s happened?? On no imagination is this a Michelin star restaurant: Red wine was freezing cold. The waiter ran it under to hot hap when we mentioned it was freezing cold. Classy? We asked what the wine grape was..the waiter pointed to the name of the wine estate on the bottle label…oops!! The meal was mostly bread. Bead before the meal. Bread with the starter. Not much else to follow. Portions were very small. The place felt cold. No atmosphere. The service was terrible. Waiters clearing our plates before we had finished. Felt very rushed and very intrusive. Waiters were walking up and down looking to clear plates. We were gifted a tea bag each on or way out as a special gift. Insult to injury! £230 for lunch for 2. Won’t be returning.

Staff welcoming ,friendly and efficient. Huge rather dull space which was a bit chilly. We had 7 course tasting menu with wines. Usual Michelin "theatre" around ingredients, provenance etc. The best of the courses were bland, the worst verging on unpleasant.I find it hard to believe the chefs are tasting these dishes before serving them. Our first wine was corked and to be fair a new bottle was opened with apologies. The next 3 wines were just not very nice. The Rioja,Moselle and French dessert wine whose name escapes me were ok but not delicious.Again to be fair we were only charged for 5 wines as opposed to 7. It pains me to be writing such a poor review when we were really looking forward to the meal. Anyone wanting to experience how it should be done (perhaps including the chefs here) should visit Martin Wishart in Edinburgh or Cail Bruich in Glasgow.

Venue this December evening was a little cool, whoever fitted the wood burning stove fitted one that is far too small for the size of the space. I would categorise the experience as like the story of the emperor’s new clothes. The service was superb but the food and wine were far from that. One wine was corked and all the whites were very similar and extremely acerbic. Most of the courses were borderline bland. I would give this place a miss and visit some of the top restaurants in Leith, where you will receive the same service but better food and wine.

Eating here is not just having a meal, it's an event and an experience (and it is not inexpensive). We did the full tasting menu. The food was excellent and the restaurant is beautiful. You will most definitely eat things you've never had before. The level of service is beyond reproach- you can see the staff actively patrol the floor to make sure you have everything you need. And I loved how they explained each course and would periodically come by with presentations on additional courses that could be purchased as an upsell, for example, a cheese course. They aren't required purchases but it's interesting to learn the backstory behind some of their culinary choices. Overall, it was clear everyone working there loved the place and were excited to have guests share the experience with them. Friendly, knowledgeable and fun staff made for a great evening.

My best ever solo dining experience. I last went to Timberyard 10 years ago and felt very looked after as a solo diner then. Returning to Edinburgh for the weekend meant I also had to return to Timberyard. I was sat at the bar rather than at a table and I was slightly apprehensive about this but I needn’t have been frankly as I had an absolutely superb time. The food, sourced perfectly, is outstanding, and the corresponding wine list is something I’d very much like to worn through a lot more of. I ended up adding things like truffle to one dish, and a glass of red wine for a mallard course. The staff were all brilliant. I was jealous of one guy’s incredible moustache and the guy who served me on the bar was great, recommending the Blue Blazer for a post dinner dram (and encouraging me to book Panda and Sons on the Sunday night). We started with the cheddar gougeres and their shrimp dish which is served fully shelled. They recommend eating it this way but it really just wasn’t my style. The grilled mussels and the pheasant breast were both excellent. Between the two desserts the creme brulee style one was the clear favorite. The other one I didn’t enjoy so much. Had this restaurant booked for a table for 2. Other member came down with an illness, and advised restaurant we had to cancel our booking first thing in the morning for that evening. I also advised we’d be rebooking our seat when we returned to the city on the near future. Edinburgh was at its busiest with high season, and three major events going on but restaurant said they will charge a 100 pound cancellation fee as they wouldn’t be able to fill the table. I get that they have policies, but a promise to rebook, particular circumstances, and the busiest tourist season of the year I figured they could offer a bit more compassion. Just out of curiousity, I called the restaurant 30 minutes prior to my original reservation and was told that seats were fully booked for the evening. With that greed and lies about not being able to fill the table, I will not be back. I hope the 100 pounds today was worth more than the several hundred they would have received from our party next month

Went to this restaurant to have a boozy lunch with family and Friends. The décor inside was ok and there was a nice atmosphere to the place. We opted to go for the 3 course menu and I selected a mushroom dish with a confit hens egg. When it arrived I can only assume the egg was used in making some kind of sauce as it was no where to be found. I also did not like the fact that the dish looked like somebody had spat on it. When are these Michelin star chefs going to relies that putting foam on a perfectly good dish does not make it appetizing for the eye of the consumer. It did taste ok but I felt it was a tad over seasoned for my taste. When the second course came (A Red Mullet dish) I was again disappointed to sea the chefs sputum on it. Also for my taste the fish was under cooked and parts seemed raw to me. The pudding was a blackcurrant oat oat ice-cream dish and this was well done, but could have done with a bit more of the ice cream. The staff were very attentive, but so much so I felt it was verging on intrusive. I also felt the trip to the toilet could have done with a bit better lighting, the stairs are dark and the lighting is poor. This is an accident waiting to happen. On the whole I expected the food to be better for the price you are paying here hence the 3 stars.

I am trying to figure out how this place is rated so high perhaps it’s just not my thing I have dined in many Michelin star rated restaurants and this was by far my least favorite. The ownership and team are engaged. They know who they are and what they’re presenting, they go to great measures to explain, their locally sourced and high attention to ingredients and I felt their passion but at the end of the day I paid a lot of money and left hungry My wife and daughter played up the flavors of the tastings trying to make me feel better about my choice. I found out later in the trip that when I went to sleep that night, they went out and got something to eat. OK, the premise is great. The food isn’t bad. Just a lot of money for three people leaving looking for a place to eat. Please note that the menu is price fixed and it is a tasting menu which equates to two very small slices of a steak not the steak I would avoid this restaurant!

There's nothing more to say for food and service as they were exceptional. The wine list is extensive, and we asked for a suggestion with our price range. I don't think the guy who brought the wine was a sommelier since he didn't know much, and it was 50% over our price range. A sommelier returned with a wine that fit our needs. The ambiance is old, rustic, and kinda cozy, but very poor acoustics. Some sound dampening panels would be nice to elevate the experience for a restaurant of this scale. The Washroom was dimmed for ambiance, but I think it was too dark to be safe and posed a trip/fall hazard.

Wow! What an amazing place. We booked to go to Timberyard as part of our honeymoon in Scotland after a colleague recommended it to me. So glad we went! The staff were all briefed and each congratulated us, and they also treated us to a glass of champagne each (delicious!). We went for the full tasting menu, and the additional cheese course, and could not fault a thing. All the dishes were so creative and there were so many combinations where it shouldn’t work, but does! We also really liked seeing the ingredients on the tray that was brought around. Truly such an enjoyable experience. The service from start to finish was faultless. We didn’t have to ask for anything or try to get anybody’s attention, but equally they were attentive without being annoying. We will be back!

An amazing experience. Beautiful food, great uniforms, inspired music. Good for those pesky vegans too.

Amazing food but they will exceed your expectations. Carefully crafting dishes from hyper local seasonal components and then pairing them with amazing wines. This feels like a whole new way to dine, but really they are rediscovering old habits, techniques and sustainable methods.

More than the sum of it’s parts! The setup of this restaurant is clearly a passion project with its gorgeous setting (tastefully retaining its heritage & character); & there is a hum (not too loud) that is a real pleasure. Service is 2nd to none. The team here have a joyful passion for all that Timberyard offers; & they infect you quickly. You will likely have 4+ different people attending your table through the evening, buts its seamless. Oh, & the food is brilliant. Seasonal, local, creative & delicious. The full package.

Probably one of the most enjoyable Michelin Star restaurants we have experienced. It started with incredible service. I was extremely impressed by the ownership every single person in the restaurant had. Every organization has a hierarchy… it was not clear what it was here as every person was responsible for any and every last detail of providing excellent service (even ones that were not part of the team taking care of our table). At one point, my wife dropped her napkin and within seconds a random person showed up and handed her a clean one. Now we can talk about the delicious food. Every dish had sauces that had us wanting to lick the plate. Each and every dish was expertly crafted creating a beautiful multi sensory experience. We will be back the next time we’re in Edinburgh. A truly completely marvelous evening!!

This place offers reasonably priced but delicious tasting menu. The small bites and first two courses on the menu did not do much for me, but things picked up quite well after the turbot. The turbot and the game birds were handled expertly. As a matter of fact, this place offer some of the best food that I have had. Service was okay. It felt that they paid more attention to certain customers than others. Compared to the other one-Michelin-star places in town, Timberyard had the least impressionable service. The selection for wine by glass is quite limited as well. The ambiance is modern and cool. It looks like they repurposed a factory or warehouse into a restaurant. The restroom has this cool sound in the hand washing area. Overall, this would have been a perfect dinner if the service were better.

Our meal was transcendent—there was an unfathomable depth of flavor and texture in each element, and the menu flowed brilliantly from course to course. Our hosts were knowledgeable and social throughout—a wonderful group to spend an evening with. If we’re ever fortunate enough to visit Edinburgh again, we will certainly return here.

We so wanted to be impressed with this restaurant, but sadly left feeling just the opposite. The building and decor was beautiful. The service good, but inconsistent with long gaps where we had to search for assistance. The food was underwhelming. Always tasty, but unmemorable and the courses didn't complement each other, so no flow. The alcohol pairings made little sense. We appreciate the Timberyard is very proud of its wine collection, but the pairings didn't do much for the food they were supposed to be paired with. Overall, a disappointment.

Absolutely recommended to anyone looking for some high end Michelin food in Edinburgh. The atmosphere was very chilled, the setting was perfect and the service was exceptional. Shout out to Lizzy for making our evening really special.

Overpriced, poor service. I would say poor customer service, but they don’t look at you as customers. You are on their time. Restaurants seem to forget they are also in the hospitality business not the food making business. Timberyard doesn’t feel they need to operate to serve customers, they operate to serve themselves. They are open just 4 days a week or sometimes 3 days a week depends on how they feel. They clearly can’t fill up a lunch service or dinner service on a weeknight so the food must be average. Support restaurants that stay open, they need the business. Not arrogant business owners that operate weekend gigs.

Booked way in advance since we failed to get the table last time we were in Edinburgh. The atmosphere, service, and dishes are fitting of 1-Michelin star. We had tasting menu (7 courses), that was preceded by many snack dishes - it could well be a 13-course. Walked out a bit too full!

This is not just impeccable food, it's a culinary adventure. Each dish is a masterpiece. You can taste that each ingredient was handpicked and that the combinations were thought through. I especially enjoyed the deer, it was so soft, it melts in your mouth.

A well executed light lunch. I didn't enjoy the atmosphere as much though. Price slightly on the high side for the overall experience. The timber rawness of the space was also reflected in their poor workmanship of the floor board installation. Every time their servers walked around me, the floor board acted like a see-saw and bounced my chair. For a few times, I was putting food towards my mouth when that happened. So embarrassing that I almost missed it and made a mess. The interior dining area was rather chilled even in the summertime. Toilet facilities were inside an added-on cubicle and felt too temporary to be comfortable.

We've had the most beautiful dining experience ever in this place. The atmosphere was really relaxed. No snobbery, no pretentiousness. We were warmly welcomed and treated cordial and respectfully. Chose the tasting menu with pairing drinks and it was just out of this world! It felt like a ceremony on food. Accompanied by beautiful classical Scandinavian folk on big retro speakers. A special shout out to the sommelier! It was such a pleasure to listen to the joy he had in describing the wines. We had the most special wines. Stuff we will never be able to drink in our lives ever again. It was a true journey through the senses. Bravo!

First restaurant when we arrived in Edinburgh. If the frontage is already pretty, expect to be amazed when you come home! A perfect mix between the "traditional" pub side of the entrance and the cozy and chic restaurant side towards the back. A fireplace is lit which leaves a very pleasant and comforting light smell of wood. There are large windows that leave a visual of Arthur's Seat (if I'm not mistaken). The service was quick and very pleasant and the portions generous! I would come back with pleasure :D
