Found the greyfriar while wandering around the area and introduduced by the story of bobby by the road corner. 1st time pub goer in Edinburgh, protocol was to find a table then order, pay and wait for dinner and drink to be served. Finally had the opportunity to try a traditional fish pie and dark ale. Pie had some chunks of haddock, salmon and shrimp in creamy herby potato base and topped with melted cheese-wished ratio was more on the fish side but still delicious. Serving was solo and came with a side of long stemmed broccoli and carrot spears seasoned well. Guiness ale paired well. Ambiance was great for a friday evening and service was efficient.

Pretty decent place. Personel didn't seem to really notice you. Took some time for someone to come to us as you had to be seated by an employee (and they were not busy at all.) Also had to ask to order as noone came up to us after reviewing the menu etc. Nothing to extreme just slightly disappointing. Employees were nice enough though, just not very aware. The interior is nice but I'll put it this way you wouldn't want to go in hungry. I'll be honest if could no stars I would We waited an hour for the food for the first dish and the carrots were raw me and 3 other friends came here the rest of the food was over an hour late. One of my friends waited an hour and a half and the chips as part of the burger were half cooked and didn't get her food until an hour and a half passed to say we all were disappointed is an understatement. I would not recommend it to anyone.

OK, I was really looking forward to trying this place out even though we ended up here a day or two earlier than we expected. We had some time to kill from an adventure nearby so we thought we’d grab some fish and chips while we waited. One staff member was a little bit rude as though we were a bother to them, but another staff member was awesome and made up for the other staff members lack of decorum. This was our first meal in Scotland, and we were really looking forward to it. It was good, but I have to admit it wasn’t the best I’ve ever had. Would I buy again if I was hungry?… yes. But I bet you there’s better fish and chips in Edinburgh Scotland and we hope to find it. still, the batter was very light and it was very fresh and very hot. I do suggest you try here especially if you like pubs and the pub atmosphere.

We came here for the namesake to such a great classic Edinburgh story. Unfortunately we left very disappointed. After ordering drinks, we had them swapped on us with another couple sitting nearby which caused us to have to wait for new drinks. This wasn't even the worst of the night. From ordering our food to arrival it took 80 mins. That's ridiculous!! Despite them giving us a discount as an apology (only after saying we would have to leave before the food arrived due to another commitment) I still find this completely unacceptable. The excuse was that the kitchen staff were new and slow. To me, if this is the case and obviously known, they should have extra staff working or perhaps warn people of service delays when they arrive. There was a long line of people waiting when we left and we heard them being told 30-40 min wait times. I'm sure those people waited much longer. I would definitely steer clear during peak meal periods otherwise be prepared to wait and bring your patience.

We should've been told when ordering. Also took you about 20 minutes to bring us the bill after we'd asked for it. The food we had was very good, but the service was sadly lacking. Bobby, the Scottish version of the faithful dog Hachiko, was a faithful dog who lived in Scotland before the Japanese faithful dog Hachiko (1923-1935), and after the death of his owner John Gray in 1858. It is said that she sat next to her master's grave for 14 years. The pub is located right in front of Bobby's statue, and the pub is also named after this loyal dog. I had a steak pie and a fish cake, a croquette-like dish filled with minced fish and potatoes, and both were delicious! ! The store staff are generally friendly and provide good customer service, but they were so busy chatting with each other that they often didn't notice us, so it was difficult to call for someone. However, the atmosphere inside the restaurant and the food were delicious, so I highly recommend it.

This was the second visit for my wife and I to the Greyfriar's Bobby site on our recent visit to Edinburgh but the first opportunity we had to venture inside the Bar and grab a meal with our Scottish host Patricia. The atmosphere was spirited but not loud or disruptive in any sense and the decor was very well done in traditional pub style. Our service was excellent as well and a tip of the ol' Scally cap to Runkun & Hope who waited on us and also took time to chat up with us tourists from the States in some nice friendly patter. My wife and friend had the Puy Lentil - Vegetable pie and I had the excellent Mac n' Cheese. The food was so tasty and was served hot & promptly. Located a stone's throw from the National Museum of Scotland, this welcoming and charming bar will win you over from the first moment. As soon as you enter, you will be surrounded by a warm and traditional atmosphere, enriched by historical touches that pay homage to the legend of Greyfriars Bobby, the faithful terrier symbol of Edinburgh. The menu is a true ode to Scottish cuisine, with dishes that highlight local and season. The fish and chips, crunchy and tasty, are among the best you can find in the city. Don't miss the traditional haggis, even if you've never had it before: here it's prepared to perfection, with intense flavors and a modern twist that makes it irresistible. Quite an outlier rating review, given the general high rating the restaurant has received. This is a personal experience, some might not mind it and some will, entirely subjective. Our group visited this restaurant expecting a pleasant experience, but a few key issues left us a bit disappointed. Here's a breakdown of our experience: 1. Service Speed: Orders arrived promptly, which was appreciated. 2. Food Quality: I ordered chips—average and unremarkable, earning a neutral 3/5 for the food itself. Had I ordered anything else, I would be able to give a more balanced rating for the food, e.g. whether I liked it or not. But chips are generally always average wherever you go. 3. Views: The views were good, but similar to other restaurants on the same street, so this wasn't a unique advantage. Concerns: - Bill Payment: Being told we couldn't pay bills separately because the staff was busy caused significant inconvenience for our large group (7 of us, 6 having ordered smth). While this might be understandable in some cases, it isn’t standard in most restaurants and left us puzzled. - Tipping Practices: The bill included an "optional" tip from the start, we received the bill with the tip already included. Indeed, in the bill, there was a section that said that the tip was entirely optional, but the action of adding it from the very beginning to the bill definitely creates social pressure for you to tip. When we asked to separate the bill/pay for what we ordered separately, one worker helped, but when one of us asked about the charge appearing on the card reader, we were told it included the tip, which was now mandatory to us because they went out of their way to accommodate us. This comment seemed to our group, quite a puzzling one, given it is common practice to provide the separating of the bill/paying separately in restaurants and a service that does not take long, I would say it took maximum around 10 minutes to complete. This undermines the optional nature of the tip and felt like forced gratitude. I believe many would understand that social pressure to tip in these circumstances. Finally, i understand that paying separately is not guaranteed in all restaurants, absolutely valid, but the comment does leave one feeling like we were being somewhat unreasonable requesting to pay separately at a busy period. While the staff's workload is acknowledged, these practices—especially the implied obligation to tip—left a sour impression. Dining should not involve coercion or attitudes suggesting standard expectations are a special favor. Improvements in policy and transparency are necessary to make the experience more enjoyable. With regards to the reply, I would like to confirm that we did indeed not arrive with a reservation. If a reservation would have been needed or accommodating us meant a lot more effort, I believe we could have been informed of it and perhaps made another decision under those circumstance. As I mentioned in the first paragraph, a review is personal, subjetive, some after reading this will mind what happened, but still decide to visit, but remind mindful of what happened to us and avoid certain things, and still have a great experience. This is a recount of what happened to us and how we felt, it does not mean that you will feel the same way. Recounts of things are always through the perspective of that person, this is my perspective and what I recall happening, the other Party might remember it differently, who you decide to take as truth is a matter of your own critical thought.
