Im Scottish through and through and looked forward to visit this bar. Looked ok but pathetic rude staff are a total embaressment to our capital city, so many other beautytfull places to eat or drink. I would give this dump a wide berth and will advise accordingly, do not waste your time or money in this dump.

A great pub, at least from the outside impression and furnishings. But that's about it. Unfortunately it took forever before we could order even though the pub and the tables weren't full. The food took forever after we ordered and a re-ordered sauce only arrived long after we had finished eating. When we wanted to pay, we first had to get up and 'disturb' the waitress while she was solving the crossword puzzle. Food itself was ok, but we definitely won't be coming back. Service is something else!!

This was a welcomed sight after a long day of touring! The pints were cold, dram of scotch warmed my belly, the people were friendly and the food was good! We all really enjoyed our meals - Haggis, Neeps & Tatties (their first time trying haggis!), Stovies, Fish & Chips and Cheese & Bacon burgers for the kids. The brownie & clotted cream was also a hit! For a wee auld pub, it's truely unique in a way thats almost tranquil, can see why its always busy during summer. Great selection of beers/ales( if you drink it) and the food is great and reasonably priced for city center. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Lovely wee pub for relaxing in.

Refused food at 8.50pm despite sign outside the pub clearly stating food served until 10pm. Poor response from Manager and won’t go back. Thanks for your reply but this was not the case. We were sitting in the upstairs area of the bar where we were told food would be served. It was only when we started to look at the menu that we were told it was finished. The fact that people were served food half an hour later just rubs salt into the wound! So it was not a case of there not being any room - more a case of the manager deciding that she’d had enough. And ‘no’ we were not rude and asked politely if we could order food only to be told rudely that we were too late.

Food is a classic Scottish pub affair with haggis, Cullen skink both on the menu alongside pub grub favorites such as burgers with pulled pork on top. It's a city pub right next to a large tourist spot so I was dubious that it wouldn't be costly for sub-par food (my experience with tourist food locations has been hit or miss) but decidedly too hungry to go anywhere else on this occasion. Fantastic food, I was tasting the smokey pulled pork in my mind for the rest of the day. Between the high quality of the meat and the sauce i wanted to eat that was exclusively over the next few days. Prices aren't exorbitant, which was a pleasant surprise. Atmosphere is geared towards the tourists with lore about the Grefrairs Bobby around the place. The service staff ask what you've been up to and genuinely seem interested too. Can't recommend the club sodas, as they simply tasted of soda water with a sliver of the flavouring added. Good cider choice on draft, a dry flavourful counterpart to anything delicious from the menu. Feels like your inside a proper olden days pub while your inside. You almost expect someone to come in having trotted there by horse back and pay with shillings and a half pence.

Very average welcome, we arrive at the entrance of the pub and the 2 waiters at the bar look at us without even saying hello, they explain to us that we must sit down, choose and pay before consuming... Special concept, but afterwards everything, why not and it's noted on the wall (we hadn't seen it before). The entrance arrives, yeah... Nothing transcendent and yet, we are the first to remain encouraging despite the missteps of restaurants of all kinds... In short, disappointing experience for a pub that calls itself "renowned", we will return to your neighbors, at the Deacon Brodies Tavern, where we ate the day before and were very well received and felt that we were recognized and not felt like we were bothering… Plus, we had better food and for the same price… A word of advice for tourists like us, go your way, you can eat much better elsewhere and be much better regarded…

Having directed my group to visit Grey Friars churchyard (for the Good Boy, Bobby) we decided we should toast his memory in the pub of his name. The staff were nice enough but not very efficient (ordered three double 10yo Glenfiddich -£30) and as we got seated the noisy TV (Scotland were playing France in the six nations) I felt I wanted to move to another venue. The noise was horrible, because there was no external speakers for the TV it was on full blast and made me seriously uncomfortable. I understand that on match days bars must have the sport on or they will not attract customers but that noise!

My friends and I have visited this scenic, classic pub in late november. Since we are not from the UK ourselves (4 dutchmen) it took us a short bit to figure out that we have to order at the bar ourselves. It was quite busy at the time, so it was easy to look past the table not being cleaned out from previous eaters whilst the service was working very hard. The scenery and atmosphere was superb, very classic and proper looking pub. It was quite crowded on a thursday afternoon, very nice to see so many people having a fun time in a cozy and friendly atmosphere. Being from outside the UK, I opted to go for a traditional pub style dish, the slowcooked beef rib, shin & pulled brisket pie. It was an absolute delicious meal! The meat was tender, some very tasty gravy and good veggies on the side. Would recommend this to anyone! My friends had some of the burgers, veggie and meat choices, and they were very satisfied as well. I can't recall which draft beer we had during our time, but it was cold and well poured so no complaints here either. Every amounted to a fair tab, which included some tasty starters as well. I can fully recommend this establishment to anyone visisting Edinburg. If you are looking for a traditional pub style dinner you have to make a stop here. I know I will for sure if I ever visit Edinburgh again! Thanks for the great food and drinks!

We visited this pub as we had been sightseeing and wanted some food and drink. There was a big group of us and one of our friends (who is Gluten intolerant and can get very ill) asked the waitress (on the receipt it said the name Petra) if they had a gluten free menu. The waitress rolled her eyes and said no. She then came over whilst we were all looking to tell my friend the few items that were gluten free. My friend decided and chose her meal. The waitress left by saying “okay are you cool with that”, as if my friend was being difficult. When the waitress brought the food out to us, she handed my friend next to me, some food that wasn’t gluten free and audibly said “that’s what they’re supposed to look like” and laughed. Her attitude stank and her manners were next to none. She may have thought she was funny but she made my friend feel horrible and she upset her. Whether you have opinions or not, you should not make someone feel guilty for having an illness / intolerance. The food was good but we wouldn’t go back because of her.
