The Stair Arms Hotel in Edinburgh, City of

There was a very long wait for both lunch and breakfast, and there was no heating at night.

Was booked in by someone on my behalf as member of a shooting party and was given room 10 which has no en-suite bathroom and no sink in the room. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. Sadly there was a noisy vibrating loud fan noise all night. It could have been the heating system or the neighbouring rooms extractor but it was loud and when stood Infront of the wall mirror actually made parts of the room vibrate. The bathroom was some 25 paces down the hall and although it's is a private bathroom for room 10 it's a long way to go in the early hours. The bathroom was immaculate and well stocked but at 6.30 am lacked the most important requirement that being HOT WATER I ran the sink tap for over 5 minutes and both the bath taps for over 3 minutes ( taps weren't labelled) and eventually ended up with a cold wash and shave and hardly any sleep. I went down to reception at 7am on a working week day and there were no staff to been seen. The place was in complete darkness. They charged £70 for my room which did not include breakfast I will be asking for a refund as they did not meet my basic requirements conducive for a nights rest.

On our way from family wedding to airport and stopped for a quick coffee. Waitress offered lunch if we could wait 15 minutes but on too tight a schedule.Service was good. Millionaire’s shortbread a particular highlight!

Service was very slow even thought it didn't seem busy , burgers were poor quality, pate was a paste with no texture and poor flavour. Huge waits between courses. Staff busy talking just young and didn't seem interested. Very disappointed.

Had a family lunch. Great tasting burgers and chips and a good kids meal selection. Brilliant selection of desserts and traybake ready to take away. Friendly service and a great location.

Passed this Hotel many times but this is the first time we stopped for a bite to eat. What a lovely place. Very welcoming and the decor / style is very tasteful. Lovely touch, after placing our order and waiting for our food, a complimentary snack of fresh bread and dips, very impressed. Food excellent, Staff friendly and helpful, prices very reasonable. Definitely recommend.

Visited for lunch restaurant very cold, I know mid July but not comfortable, sadly Scottish weather not helping . Service and food excellent.

Went on recommendation as one of our party had a previous good experience. Expected mediocre pub fare and it even disappointed here. Food arrived with one servers bust in the food, another had their finger in the soup and my puff pastry pie lid was rubbing along nicely on server's shirt. Veggies were not luke warm but cold. Not once during three courses did they check on the group or ask if drinks needed refreshing. Asked for bill splitting which was a farce. They got a point as desserts were good , Cartmel sticky toffee and English company cheesecake. Unfortunately we're in the trade and the customer service was shocking. First time in a long time we left no tip which we know are greatly appreciated.

Stayed for one night on business, room, and WiFi excellent. Breakfast starts at 0800. However, the evening meal menu in the restaurant lacks healthy choices such as salads, whilst side salads are served, chips served overcooked and overdone. so trying to eat healthy a challenge. Some really good safe off-road walks around the hotel area an added bonus

We live reasonably local to the Stair Arms and visit regularly. The staff are friendly and welcoming and we always have a lovely meal. We celebrated our wedding here last June and can’t fault a single thing. The planning was spot on and on the day we genuinely didn’t have to worry about a thing, All of our guests had a great time and complimented the venue. Family run hospitality at its best!

The hotel is very conveniently located for visiting the city of Edinburgh. From there you can reach the free P+R Sheriffhall in about 10 minutes by car and you can take the bus to the city center every half hour. The hotel has free parking and is cheaper than a hotel in the city center. Unfortunately, despite the harmonious and tasteful furnishings, the hotel gave us a somewhat sloppy or dingy impression. The carpet in the lobby and in the hallway to the rooms urgently needs to be professionally cleaned. There was only 2 of the 12 on our room door. The towels were washed but some were discolored and were already coming apart. The toilet seat was wobbling and urgently needed to be screwed back on. Our room, unlike that of our fellow travelers, had obviously not been cleaned properly before we moved into it. The food in the hotel restaurant was okay. The à la carte breakfast was "classic Scottish" with scrambled or fried eggs, toast, bacon, sausages, black pudding, mushrooms and grilled tomatoes. You looked in vain for fresh fruit, vegetables or yoghurt. The service varied greatly depending on the person and ranged from friendly and attentive to unmotivated, bored and listless. We were able to live with some inconveniences for our short stay there, but we probably won't come back.

For the price was good. Loved the staff. Rooms were basic and bed was very tough. Very close to be able to catch public transport and a nice atmosphere.

Beautiful slightly gothic style pub hotel, on a main road to Edinburgh so a very convenient location with plenty of parking. Food available, very attractive rooms , good service. We were lucky to witness a traditional Scottish wedding 💍

3 from the family group had not been to The Stair Arms Hotel for 50+ years and we visited to bring back happy memories of our childhood and we were not disappointed! Obviousliy, the interior had changed greatly but the atmosphere is still great and the staff were friendly. It wasn't too busy when we arrived but the dinning area soon filled up. Our order was taken promptly, had a bit of a wait in between courses but nothing to complain about. Food was very tasty, the dessert portions were HUGE. I would say the prices were on the high side for what we had but it was so well worth the visit down memory lane.

Visited here for many reasons, lunch, functions and spent the night there as part of a wedding ceremony party. The hotel is just beautiful. Food is lovely and the service is first class. As part of the wedding party the staff were amazing, they cannot do enough for you. So much so, I am having my wedding there this year.

I went as part of a large group for Christmas lunch. There is plenty of parking available. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The premises are very clean and tidy. I chose off the three course Christmas menu and all three courses were delicious! They offer a good variety of drinks also. Would highly recommend!

Never been to anywhere and refused a plate but told to butter my scone on a napkin. Costco scones served.

Had our Christmas 🎄 party here last night. Food excellent staff outstanding and venue perfect. However the DJ was absolutely awful. Ruined what should have been a great night. Did not read the room. No party music. Went from 1 song filling the floor to then another rubbish one emptying the floor. We put up requests to try to help fell on deaf ears. Don't recommend him at all if you want people to return get shot of the DJ Very disappointed 😞

We went to the restaurant here in a large group for a Christmas lunch. There was a good choice on the menu with reasonable prices. The food was excellent and the service was great.

Lovely Restaurant. Very comfortable seating. Plenty of parking, can be abit difficult to turn right when leaving. Portions look small but my goodness they are filling! We didn't make it to dessert so took it away with us! Great prices and good deal on the number of courses you buy!

Shame the service was not good I think the staff needs more training was going to stay for food but my wife ordered just a expresso but it was all over the cup no spoon or milk and sugar was offered just a mess so we just left nice place but needs leadership

Been a couple of times but on last occasion the service was very poor. We'd reserved a table for 6, on arrival the floor at table wasn't cleaned of food debris, the waitresses are not properly trained to wait tables and when asked to clear glasses they were quite annoyed. Food when it came was acceptable but I doubt we shall return. It's a lovely place but waiting staff let the management down !!!

Very nice hotel, but the service could be better. Some cleaning can be improved, customer interaction especially need some friendly approach from breakfast service personal.

Had a beautiful meal here today! Perfect start to our holiday. I had fillet steak and the trimmings, and the husband had a burger and trimmings. Highly recommend! Best steak I've had in 25 years! Service was great, and I couldn't believe how reasonable the bill was. Will definitely be back! Thank you 😊

Had lunch with a friend, service excellent from a young waitress. Menu 1st class, good selection and 2 or 3 course lunch menu for OAPs. Food and presentation lovely. Definitely worth a visit 😍

Beautiful location, excellent receptionist, food reasonable, other than that, rooms were spacious but not clean, hoovering during breakfast in the bar, cleaning toilets in restaurant during breakfast, grumpy staff, would not visit again

Seeing when we booked it was listed as a one star hotel we didn't have high hopes, just a cheap place to stay as we had to be in Edinburgh early, but when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised by how nice it was, beautiful location, friendly reception and staff, nice stylish room that was very clean and on site restaurant food was very good. We were also asked what time we would like breakfast which started from 8am, but because we had to leave early we were offered food to takeaway. Would definitely recommend!

Had my daughters wedding on Friday the 21st absalute brilliant day and night staff were superb and everything went like clockwork.rooms were amazing and this place made my daughters and son in laws day complete. 1 thing I think staff should have a uniform ,would really go with good service.

Used to go quite often but 3/4 years ago didn't enjoy what we ordered was working in function room beginning of the year and noticed that it had been refurbished so booked a table for dinner and yes they are back on top form 👏👏👏💯

We stayed here for 1 night as part of a trip around Scotland. I was a little worried about it being listed as a 1-star hotel but was absolutely blown away with the quality and cleanliness of the hotel. We dined in the evening, and the food was amazing value for money and great options. Staff were very helpful and attentive. I would stay here again if I'm ever up this way 100%

We attended a family celebration recently, under Covid -19 restrictionas and were very impressed by the way the staff handled themselves and guests to keep us all safe. The waiting staff were very efficient and always available to help. The food was of a good quality and arrived very hot. We understand that due to Covid restrictions this has become a very difficult job and would like to acknowledge the part played by the team in making it a lovely evening.considering under restrictions

Had a meet up with my sister and brother-in-law for Sunday lunch. It was excellent they we’re doing half price main course, I had steak which was perfectly cooked and melt in mouth. Only complaint was the the room was very cold, thankfully I had taken a cardigan, Staff were very pleasant and helpful.

This place is recently renovated and is a great place for meals with families or couples. The menu has been the same for years however I thoroughly enjoy the food and new atmosphere created through the brand new revamp of the interior!

A group of 58 people from our village had a Christmas lunch , the food was first class, everything was hot and tasty,lots of vegetables, roast and croquett potatoes ,the service was excellent, would certainly recommend.

Beautiful decor, food enjoyable and coffee excellent however the main let down was most definitely the waiting staff. We ordered drinks but weren't offered ice, the lovely homemade bread arrived with two dips - we weren't told what the dips were and it wasn't obvious ( like balsamic and oil is). Our after dinner tea and coffee arrived 5 minutes apart so I sat waiting and wondering if my coffee order had been forgotten. All in all the one big improvement would be the communication. The young staff seemed almost too shy to be doing front of house duties. Asking if we'd like ice, telling us what the bread came with and our drinks arriving at the same time........ and maybe some small talk and a smile. I think this place has heaps of potential and just needs a little polishing around the edges.

Stopped for coffee and home made biscuits etc. All good. Nice refurbishment on inside but need to tidy up all the signage outside in front of the lawn to the north, even better, get rid. Does spoil the kerb appeal!!

We had been for lunch which was very enjoyable and decided to go in the evening for our anniversary The taff were very friendly and our meal was well cooked and presented also think the hotel has had a major refit so very comfortable dining room with a mezzanine level which we used which gave you a bit of privacy wasn't over expensive either would defiantly say give it a try

Stopped off here for lunch today Cullen skink was outstanding Chicken chilli sandwich with triple cooked chips hard to beat With the bread that came with the soup and the sandwich and chips all very edible Attentive polite staff and good service Highly recommended

I don't know about you guys, but I love the Fringe. Edinburgh takes on an almost surreal level of bonkersness where pretty much anything can happen in one of the hundreds of venues around the city. But Edinburgh also gets crazy busy, I mean it's bad enough most of the year anyway, but Christmas and August it turns the crowds up to eleven. Great news for colleagues in hospitality, not so good if you want a nice peaceful lunch, maybe with visiting family, or a pal you've not seen for a while and quite fancy hearing what they say. So whilst finding the fun and funky during the Festival is fabulous, sometimes something a little more sedate is sought. What I recommend in such situations is to get out of Dodge, not too far, Porty or Leith will be less hectic, but to be on the safe side crossing the bypass is a surefire way to get far from the madding crowd. We did last Sunday, popped not five minutes down the A68 and found The Stair Arms, just outside of Pathhead. And what a find it is...

We had travelled all day and were looking for a motorhome friendly pub for a meal and to overnight in their car park. The Stair Arms fitted the bill perfectly. The staff were pleasant and welcoming, the food was perfectly acceptable, the restaurant and toilets had obviously been recently refurbished and were fresh and modern, the food was priced correctly and served nicely and the car park was big enough for us to find a reasonably level place to stay overnight. There was some noise from the nearby road and a few other people leaving later at night but overall it was just what we needed that evening. Would definitely call again if in the area.

We stayed at the Stair arms for 2 nights whilst travelling around Scotland. Whilst there are positives being it is only 25 min from Edinburgh, it is relatively inexpensive, having super surroundings for a pretty morning dog walk and having comfy beds, we found the hotel itself lacking in many ways.

In our way south from St. Andrew’s to Manchester, we stopped @ The Stair Arms Hotel for a quick lunch. There was plenty of parking, a nice menu and the prices were very reasonable. Between the four of us, we had a burger, salmon, veggie burger & a panini. The staff were accommodating and friendly, all the food was good (maybe a new veggie burger could be considered?) and the atmosphere was relaxing, tasteful and clean. We grabbed a coffee on the way out & that was also good. Happy to support a family-run business!

After a recent renovation this hotel is looking fantastic and a great atmosphere for dining, snacking or just having a coffee and cake. The choices of food are great and cater for all. Friendly staff and great service. Well worth a visit

Whist in the area of Pathead we decided to stop off at the Stair Arms for breakfast.

The food has always been good, however the decor needed updating. They’ve succeeded with the makeover and it’s been done very well. I had the haggis fritter starter and battered haddock for main. Couldn’t face the dessert menu. Stuffed. Def be back again in the future and I will be telling my friends to visit. Homemade bread was a nice touch.

A friendly independant hotel situated amongst bush a couple of K's from Pathhead. Large room with a large bathroom situated at the back of the hotel overlooking the grounds and adjoining bush. Relaxing and enjoyable.

The staff are lovely. The decoration is lovely. The atmosphere is lovely. The kids’ play area is fantastic.

Called in on return to England from Edinburgh and were not disappointed. A great, friendly welcome from staff and superb service throughout our visit. Decor is lovely, very comfortable and relaxed setting. Great menu, lots of choice and reasonably priced.

We visited this hotel with our friends and small dog. We were made most welcome and told where our table was. We had comfortable chairs which unfortunately were a little low for the table but being capable adults we made the best of it. Three of us ordered the Cullen Skink, my wife being the odd one out. Whilst we waited we were given warm bread rolls which were very good. The Soup came in large bowls and was brilliant (the best I have had in a long time) and very filling. We ordered two Fish & Chips and two home made Steak pies. All meals were tasty and large, our dog had plenty of titbits due to the portion size and full stomachs. We had left a little room for dessert which were equally as good. Really enjoyed it.

Terry and I were travelling down to the Scottish Borders from Dundee when we discovered the Stair Arms Hotel. We decided to pop in for lunch to grab some nosh and some rest.

This coaching Inn on the A68 south of Edinburgh and in the village of Pathhead is an ideal stopping place for a good meal. The choice of food was extensive and extremely tasty. The friendly scottish waitress was so helpful and obliging, making the trip from the south more relaxing.

Was in East Lothian visiting family when we went for dinner here . Lovely place decor is very nice and food was excellent. The two waitresses working where very friendly and nothing was to much trouble . Will definitely be paying this place a visit when we are back in the area and will definitely be recommending to family and friends .

Visited the stair arms on a Sunday for some birthday lunch. The restaurant looks great since it’s refurbishment, we had a lovely meal (6 adults and one baby) and all of the food was really good! Plenty of space for the buggy as well. The service was a little bit lacking, the restaurant was quite quiet as it was mid afternoon but instead of showing us to our table when we arrived the girl just pointed at a table, there was no conversation at all when taking our orders. However we still enjoyed our visit and will definitely be back.

Myself and a friend had dinner here this evening which I have to say wasn’t the nicest. The triple cooked chips were drenched in grease. HOWEVER, the issue arose when we went to leave and my friend picked her bag off the floor and popped it on the table. We noticed there were large ants crawling all over her bag and on the table. We then looked down to see a large number of ants crawling round our feet!

So we have driven past this place loads of times and it some reason never stopped.

We had had heard that the Stair Arms had had a makeover and refurbishment so decided to return to try their food after a long break away.

We had been going here for 22 years and hadn’t been for nearly a year as we felt the place was looking tired. We went last week and fell in love with the place all over again. The food remains tasty (lovely pub good) and the renovations were just lovely. We will be back to making it our regular eatery again. Book in advance as the place was super busy

We’ve stopped here for dinner three times in as many months. The food Is very enjoyable. We particularly like the complimentary homemade mini rolls and dips that are served while we wait for our order.

Visited here on Christmas eve for my birthday dinner and really enjoyed it. This is our 2nd visit and both times food and service have been brilliant was busy with large booking in for Christmas eve but that did not spoil it. We even were allowed to order off the festive menu and did not need to pre book for that like most places insist on doing this time of year. Staff were really friendly and chatty throughly enjoyed everything
