The Theatre Royal Bar and Restaurant in Edinburgh, City of

First restaurant when we arrived in Edinburgh. If the frontage is already pretty, expect to be amazed when you come home! A perfect mix between the "traditional" pub side of the entrance and the cozy and chic restaurant side towards the back. A fireplace is lit which leaves a very pleasant and comforting light smell of wood. There are large windows that leave a visual of Arthur's Seat (if I'm not mistaken). The service was quick and very pleasant and the portions generous! I would come back with pleasure :D

What a surprise to discover this pub. We came to drink a Guinness and we came back twice to eat dinner and lunch! We hardly recommend the Scotch egg that is delicious! The balmoran chicken or the fish and chips are also good choices. The service is fast and made with a smile. A lot of choice of beers are available.

Great place for a quick bite. Excellent menu and service. Try the Haggis Wellington bites, you won’t regret it. So good you’ll never have to try regular haggis! Highly recommend.

The food is good, the beer is good, and you can even watch soccer. Everyone is friendly, so give it a visit.

Disfrutamos de un almuerzo muy sabroso incluyendo sopa de tomate casera! Había una buena elección en el menú, así como especiales del día. Disfrutamos de nuestro tiempo allí, y volveríamos. Recomendaría este lugar a todo el mundo. Hay una zona de restaurante en la parte trasera del bar, por lo que los niños también pueden entrar.

Lovely pub in central Edinburgh. Reasonably priced, great beers, good food and excellent staff

The food is exceptional. We ordered the Haggis Wellington which was served with a delicious mustard sauce and the Chicken Balmoral as a main course. Everything is fresh and very tasty, the portions are a good size. The staff are very friendly. The interior is cosy and at the time of our visit had a very nice Christmas decoration. There was some music but not too loud, just to create a perfect atmosphere.

Chosen as our local pub, we haven't tried the food here yet. But a nice atmosphere and good service! We ended up spending New Year's Eve here since Hogmanay was cancelled. Recommended!

Belle atmosphère dans la zone pub, un peu plus kitch dans la zone restauration. Bons burgers mais frites beaucoup trop salées. Gros problème en service et cuisine même si le manager s’est excusé plusieurs fois et nous a fait une remise. 40 minutes pour avoir nos pintes et presque une heure pour les burgers. Supplément haggis oublié. Serveuse inefficace, pas souriante. On a demandé 2 cuillères, elle nous a apporté 2 cafés !?!? Bref, expérience très moyenne

Almorzamos antes de asistir al Teatro Playhouse de al lado. Bonito menú variado y el asado del domingo y ensalada Ceasar que elegimos los dos eran muy agradables y sabrosos. Bonito ambiente en este pub tradicional, con un verdadero fuego. A pesar de que es madera oscura tradicional con paneles en el interior, el pub tiene un ambiente luminoso y abierto. Hay una zona de comida específica hacia la parte trasera, aunque se puede optar por sentarse en cualquier lugar del pub y comer, lo que hicimos, optando por una mesa cerca de las ventanas delanteras. En resumen, una buena opción, especialmente si usted está buscando buena comida, a un precio razonable, y está asistiendo al teatro adyacente Edinburgh Playhouse.

My partner and I had dinner and drank a few beers, all accompanied by live music...really a welcoming place.

Great bar next to the playhouse! We arrived late in the day after a long delay of flights. We were looking for good pub food and a good pint, this place delivered on both! We shared a scotch egg to start and it was very good overall, perfectly done and tasted great. I ordered the fish and chips and they were exceptional, I highly recommend! The fish is fresh and cooked perfectly and the chips were spot on. We went on a busier night so the bar was pretty full but they have a restaurant in the back which a bit quieter and had a full service staff to help. The service was good overall and the ambiance was good, note it is also a sports bar so they did have Rugby playing on the televisions throughout the bar as well.

This our first time in The Theatre Royal Edinburgh Food was amazing we had Mac& cheese crab starter.friend had Cullen Skink was so tasty We then had mains hake with baby roast potatoes pepper sauce so delicious friend had the steak & Ale pie which she devoured staff very nice just waiting on dessert 😀

Estábamos echando un vistazo a algunos lugares para comer esa noche que no estaban demasiado lejos de donde nos alojábamos. Pensé que el menú se veía bien y cuando nos dimos cuenta de la oferta solo disponible el martes para 2 filetes de grupa con adornos y una botella de vino tinto o blanco por £ 41 la decisión fue tomada. Los filetes estaban encantadores y cocinados exactamente como habíamos pedido. El vino tinto también era muy agradable. Nuestro amigo tenía el pollo Balmoral que también era muy bueno. Las heladerías y el crumble también bajaron muy bien y los precios eran razonables, especialmente en comparación con algunos otros pubs / restaurantes en Edimburgo. El personal era encantador y muy servicial. Sin duda volvería!

Very nice place, great staff and nice atmosphere, small snacks and good beers

I can't praise the food highly enough. I had the liver & onions, best I've had in years, and my wife had the Balmoral chicken which was equally good. Portions more than ample and very reasonable prices for central Edinburgh. Would highly recommend eating here.

Really good pint and good atmosphere.

What a lovely wee place, food was fab, can recommend the fish. Service was excellent too and they were happy to take us slightly earlier than our booked slot. Perfect location for visiting the Playhouse afterwards. We even popped back in after the show for drinks and the live music was great.

We came across this pub by pure chance because it was close to our hotel and we couldn't have made a better choice! My husband and I: Pietro, wanted to thank Francesco for his hospitality and friendliness. He made us feel like we were in Italy for two hours. Highly recommended pub, as it is a quiet place. Excellent food and beers, accompanied by live music!

This was an incredible place for dinner. We did not have reservations but I would recommend them. The food was delicious with the best sticky toffee pudding of my whole vacation! The service in the restaurant was the best! You could really see them working hard and taking care of everyone. Both the inside and outside are picture postcard perfect! I can't say enough good about this place.

WOW the cleanest place ever! Spotlessly clean, no sticky tables etc. Staff dressed smartly and very welcoming. Lovely pub decor and the atmosphere was great. Superb location

We were in Edinburgh to see the Tattoo and were staying across the street at the Holiday Inn. See the beautiful flower covered front of this restaurant, we decided to have dinner here. Although we didn't have a reservation, the hostess graciously found us a table at the rear of the restaurant. We were not disappointed. The service was good and each of us enjoyed our selected dinners. Nice spot of a relaxed dinner.

This is located next to the theatre, hence the name. we got the fish and chips and steak and ale pie. All were very good and the price reasonable. The atmosphere was excellent as well with the walls filled full of old theatre bills that were signed by the cast members. One could spend a couple of hours just ready those. Of course the bar was well stocked and although Scotland is known for the whisky it does produce some good beer as well and I recommend the Innis and Gunn. The bar is very close to A tram stop.

Restaurant room at the back of the pub, resulting in a calmer atmosphere. Very good welcome and service. Well-executed Scottish cuisine and hearty dishes. Good choice of beers. A good address!

Great service, fun crowd. Walking down the stairs to the bathroom was half as much fun as a museum we saw earlier in the day, cool artwork!

Visited the bar recently.They advertise the Euro 2024 live available to watch but it is without sound The girl greetings us on the restaurant part looked fed up ,unmotivated and after giving us menu (we wanted to look at it first),she had something to eat out of the mug right in front of us.When seated ,it took ages to serve us our drinks,despite serving the drinks to the table that came after us. Dark haired lady (I think a manager)seemed very unpleasant too.Overall heave atmosphere. When we finished our food ,we were not offered desert menu nor once asked if we want another drink.I understand having a bad day but some things are simply put me off from visiting you again (that was my second visit).I would be happy to spent my money somewhere else as I don't appreciate the treatment as we were intruders. I do not recommend this place!

Great food. But what makes the place is the customer service! Lovely waitress Maraid made anniversary dinner so special, taller waitress also wonderful. Will be back again soon..

popped in for a few drinks with pals. Slightly on the expensive side but worth it for the experience. staff brings such a lovely atmosphere to the place. blonde bartender and taller brunette were singing and smiling the entire time, looks like a fun place to work. would visit again. Thank you!

Stopped for a pint to get out of the rain. The traditional pub had all the feelings, regulars hanging out at the bar, the requisite pint-sipping old-timer who knew all the staff, the chipper bar tender and the dark wood interior. Also right next door to the theatre, if you were off to catch a show, or just coming from one. A perfect pit stop to wait out the rain.

Weird customer service and atmosphere. Was approached in an odd manner by a staff member on arrival with my family saying ‘hi’. Odd greeting for a pub setting. Tall brunette with no makeup proceeded to make me uncomfortable by explaining the seating arrangements, just felt weird. Put my mum on the spot questioning her who she was with and that she must ID me after my mum already explained I had ID . Made for a distressing visit. I visit Edinburgh frequently and had visited the pub before , I won’t be returning. Common sense should tell you someone is of age to drink , especially when the staff members themselves don’t look a day over 20. Awful customer service, and that’s coming from someone who’s done front of house before.

One of the best pubs around the area! Not only a good pub to enjoy but also they have really good food! i enjoy their Haggis a lot, a different way of serving them but amazing! We were serve by a really kind waiter, and all was on time! Also the theater is really close by.

This place is close to the hotel I was at so I went here and I had the cheeseburger, menu was Ok I guess but nothing else really jumps out at you. Sunday is roast beef night. Waitress smiled when I ordered because I am from the USA, she thought I was a burger and fries' person, I guess. I really did not there for that but nothing else looked that great to me.

Great bar near the center. The most delicious fish and chips, believe me, I've been to many bars here, and this is the best choice. Guinness extra cold is also fantastic. Plus, the interior and exterior are cool and there are not such a huge number of people as in the very center. Definitely recommend

Everything was super delicious, the burger was DELICIOUS, the salmon was 10, we tried the typical meat from there and it was delicious too, those who serve you are SUPER friendly, I definitely recommend it.

My wife and I decided to have a quick dinner here tonight. It is next to our hotel. Sophie, our server was excellent. My wife had fish and chips and I had a hamburger. Both of our meals were delicious. The fish was was some of the best she has ever had. My burger was cooked perfectly. Our food came very quickly considering the restaurant was packed with people going to the Edinburgh Playhouse which is on the other side from our hotel. I highly recommend this restaurant. Finally, the bar must be pretty good because it was packed too.

Been here loads however my visit on 15/02 was HUGELY disappointing. We all ordered the flatbreads, onion rings were stone cold so sent them all back. Our cajun chicken was cold too but wasn't sure if it was supposed to be. My friend ordered the gammon flatbread and the gammon was rancid and totally off colour - couldn't believe it was put on a plate. She sent it back then ordered the cajun chicken and it was completely different from ours. Chicken was hot however extremely overspiced! Really, really disappointed but I think the waitress was just relieved we didn't cause a scene - needless to say we didn't look at the dessert menu and after numerous visits not sure I will be in a hurry to re-book

I put 5 stars everywhere... Why? - Cuisine: it's a pub so obviously there is no gourmet cuisine... But the simple and traditional dishes offered are affordable but above all friendly and delicious. - Service: the staff is very very friendly. We keep the simple and direct side of a pub but with sincere attention to customers, including those passing through. - Atmosphere: great playlist, often an X or Y match to watch in a positive and fair-play atmosphere - Others: live bands, daily specials, setting, beers, ciders, whiskey...

The steakpie was gorgeous., The atmosphere with the Scottish,Irland,Wales,England. Flags was so warm welcoming. Just fantastic pub prices for food is very good . I would recommend this place to family and friends. Also watch footie on TV.

Walked in from a cold, rainy day and smelled a lovely warm open fire. Joker IPA on tap, whiskey flights for £12, and really good music. I ordered the haggis bites and scotch egg and both were great. My wife had the leek and lentil soup with sourdough and this was also very good. Lovely pub.

This is the second time this week we have been here. The food is great. The service is great too. We did the two steaks and bottle of wine e for £41 the first time which was lovely. Tonight we are back I had the salmon and hubby had chicken burger. The food is great. I definitely recommend this place if you are near the playhouse xx

this bar smells of urine, and Iwas given what was, without doubt, the worst chicken Balmoral I have ever been presented with. How they got a bone into a chicken breast amazes me. Not even sure it was properly cooked, and ay yet be ill. The mashed potato was just as good as reconstituted Smash, and the sauce looked and tasted like cat sick. Only two pencil-thin carrots, green at the ends and overcooked, for veg. Awful food. I fairness, the service was fine.
