Lovely bar for food and drinks before going to the theatre staff attentive and quick in serving

Went with my family on a Tuesday night,excellent value, great quality food,nice atmosphere & music plenty of people there...a comfortable spot.

Everything was super delicious, the burger was DELICIOUS, the salmon was 10, we tried the typical meat from there and it was delicious too, those who serve you are SUPER friendly, I definitely recommend it.

My wife and I decided to have a quick dinner here tonight. It is next to our hotel. Sophie, our server was excellent. My wife had fish and chips and I had a hamburger. Both of our meals were delicious. The fish was was some of the best she has ever had. My burger was cooked perfectly. Our food came very quickly considering the restaurant was packed with people going to the Edinburgh Playhouse which is on the other side from our hotel. I highly recommend this restaurant. Finally, the bar must be pretty good because it was packed too.

The Balmoral Chicken, Steak & Ale and Scotch Eggs were amazing! The service was great. Highly recommend!

Excellent venue to enjoy food and drinks before seeing a show. Staff were very professional and food was excellent. Not overpriced either.

Been here loads however my visit on 15/02 was HUGELY disappointing. We all ordered the flatbreads, onion rings were stone cold so sent them all back. Our cajun chicken was cold too but wasn't sure if it was supposed to be. My friend ordered the gammon flatbread and the gammon was rancid and totally off colour - couldn't believe it was put on a plate. She sent it back then ordered the cajun chicken and it was completely different from ours. Chicken was hot however extremely overspiced! Really, really disappointed but I think the waitress was just relieved we didn't cause a scene - needless to say we didn't look at the dessert menu and after numerous visits not sure I will be in a hurry to re-book

I went there twice to eat, both times were really good experiences. For tourists, they have typical Scottish food.

I put 5 stars everywhere... Why? - Cuisine: it's a pub so obviously there is no gourmet cuisine... But the simple and traditional dishes offered are affordable but above all friendly and delicious. - Service: the staff is very very friendly. We keep the simple and direct side of a pub but with sincere attention to customers, including those passing through. - Atmosphere: great playlist, often an X or Y match to watch in a positive and fair-play atmosphere - Others: live bands, daily specials, setting, beers, ciders, whiskey...

Efficient and very pleasant staff.

The steakpie was gorgeous., The atmosphere with the Scottish,Irland,Wales,England. Flags was so warm welcoming. Just fantastic pub prices for food is very good . I would recommend this place to family and friends. Also watch footie on TV.

Walked in from a cold, rainy day and smelled a lovely warm open fire. Joker IPA on tap, whiskey flights for £12, and really good music. I ordered the haggis bites and scotch egg and both were great. My wife had the leek and lentil soup with sourdough and this was also very good. Lovely pub.

This is the second time this week we have been here. The food is great. The service is great too. We did the two steaks and bottle of wine e for £41 the first time which was lovely. Tonight we are back I had the salmon and hubby had chicken burger. The food is great. I definitely recommend this place if you are near the playhouse xx

Great Balmoral chicken. Great pint of Edinburgh Gold real ale. Great hot whisky and spiced apple.

Pre theatre pint was grand. Good atmosphere, friendly and engaging staff, decent pint, clean toilets. Loads of tables eating, which looked great.

this bar smells of urine, and Iwas given what was, without doubt, the worst chicken Balmoral I have ever been presented with. How they got a bone into a chicken breast amazes me. Not even sure it was properly cooked, and ay yet be ill. The mashed potato was just as good as reconstituted Smash, and the sauce looked and tasted like cat sick. Only two pencil-thin carrots, green at the ends and overcooked, for veg. Awful food. I fairness, the service was fine.

Serious stench of pish in this place, it was like that last year at Jersey Boys and its the same tonight at wicked, absolutely honkin'! Sorry guys! Sort it out !

I had the pleasure of visiting here with friends on Sunday evening and I must say that I am very positively surprised, the service is very nice, the food is definitely YES, Nachos, Haggis Load Chips, perfect with beer.

Gorgeous Victorian pub with classic features inside and striking architecture outside with a bevvy of trumpeters at the roofline. Good selection of beer, including Staropramen, Tennents, Guinness, blue Moon, Belhaven and four cask ales. We didn’t eat but the food we saw looked good.

Terrible meal. We asked for the French onion soup without any bread and it came with bread slices and croutons in it. I ordered the steak and ale pie amd it was incredibly dry. When I mentioned this to the waitress it turned out that they had forgotten the gravy. Also the pie was not a pie, just some stewed beef and, separately, a piece of disappointing pastry. Not a good experience I am afraid.

Visited on a busy Saturday night. Staff were lovely, very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Food was very good, steak cooked just as requested, which is definitely not always the case in a busy pub!!

We decided to eat here as the atmosphere was lovely the staff were good but the food was awful, the lamb was charred tough and way overcooked, the fish looked anaemic and batter soggy my sons burger was burnt and the chips were cheap frozen ones. Totally disappointed on the quality overall. Imagine it might be a nice pub to have few drinks but wouldn't eat here again.

My daughter and I had lunch before seeing a show at the Edinburgh Playhouse. Wonderful service, very friendly and attentive and the food was lovely and generous portions. Loved the ambience with a cosy fire. Will be back.

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS FOOD - possibly the worst Sunday Roast Beef I’ve ever come across, not a single edible piece of beef on the plate, dried out roast potatoes, served on the left hand side of the plate - right hand side(50%) empty SERVICE - Absolutely shocking - watched the whole family eat a meal and not a single staff member tended the table until the bill was dropped off by another miserable staff member, Edinburgh has so much to offer, even the street food or numerous fast food outlets would have provided better service and food

This restaurant was a bit of a surprise as it hadn’t come up on any prior searches and research which I had done. However, we ended up here for a meal before a show at the playhouse theatre. Without a doubt, is a underrated venue, the food and service was exceptional. Not fine dining but high end pub food, very tasty and everyone of our group enjoyed their meal.

Went for dinner here, food was ok, restaurant very busy and short staffed so quite manic. We ordered a bottle of house wine at £22 but only drank half so we asked for a cap so we could take it with us. The waiter refused...

We enjoyed dinner here while in Edinburgh. The Steak and Ale Pie was delicious. Lots of flavor and good portions. Similarly, the royal with cheese was very good, both moist and flavorful. The service staff was friendly and explained a few of their dishes. If you are staying in the area, I certainly recommend a visit. There was no wait when we dined, but the staff said they were usually needed.

Good atmosphere, delicious food. Nice and attentive girls to serve us. My son and I felt very comfortabele here! A really nice evening for two Dutch people.

We landed there by chance yesterday as Al the other restaurants were fully booked. We were warmly welcomed. The price was more than decent and the food abundant. Just go for a half portion of fish fillet and share the crumble! Great experience

Went there every night we stayed in Edinburgh and everything was perfect! Would definitely recommend for a great pub experience. They had live music on our last Friday which added some 90's vibe to the atmosphere.

Pub food really has changed! After hoofing it around Edinburgh for the day we took a chance to check this place out. Too our delight we were very pleased. Excellent service and a varietal menu. Hubby had the double cheese burger that he couldn’t finish...

we stopped here for a few drinks pre dinner. it was fully booked at the restaurant although we hadn't planned on eating there. But I can recommend the Spanish restaurant right across the road for some tapas if they are fully booked. Staff also very friendly here and the toilets were spotless and probably the cleanest I have seen in any pub!!

Walked in the Theatre Royal Bar after a long day on the roads. Welcomed by a lovely team and our server was very patient and kind. Even brought the younger member (over 18!) beer samples so she can decide what to drink. Had 6 oysters, burgers and crispy chicken. Great food and generous portions.

Lovely afternoon in Edinburgh with family. The food was amazing and portions were huge. I am gluten intolerant so, happy to have a dedicated menu with lots of choice. Definitely recommend if you are around that area

Have been coming here for years. A consistently good bar with a good selection of drinks and food. Plenty of room and large screens for sporting events. Friendly efficient staff as well.

Was a regular visitor here before lockdown but had never tried the restaurant before. It is right at the back and although quite busy was relaxing and the music was background rather than blaring, so we were able to talk freely. The staff were welcoming,...

We've been here with a huge group and they still managed to find us places to sit and we were able to order food. The steak was perfectly cooked and delicious and the loaded chips very tasty. Our friends had the Balmoral chicken and were very satisfied with it. Drinks were good and they had a decent variety of beers. Staff was friendly and quick. Nice atmosphere and clean toilets as well.

Good bar but nothing special. Not so great selection of whisky in comparison with other bars. Not so busy place even in friday evening (maybe for the reason).
