Thyme Cafe in Sheffield

I used to love this place; always a guaranteed lovely meal and atmosphere . Sadly I’ve been twice in the last 6 weeks and won’t go again. First trip (sept) I had supreme chicken which would have been nice if it didn’t have a ridiculous amount of salt in it. Last night we went and I had an autumn salad (with halloumi) . It was really disappointing - basically not what was described on the board - a pitiful attempt at a salad which was completely tasteless and uninteresting. I had to ask for some dressing to make it edible. The additional halloumi looked like shop bought , ready coated pieces of cheese which were really greasy. No atmosphere , it was really quiet , and I’ll be surprised if it stays open given the quality of the food. I paid £18 for that salad and won’t be going again .

Superb Sunday roast, one of the best I've ever had. Choice of pork, beef, turkey, chicken breast, butternut squash, all served with Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, 3 seasonal veg. trimmings. £15-20. Or £25 for all 4 roast meats. Good portion sizes. We ordered sides of cauliflower cheese per 2-3 people. Filling, excellent mains. Good provision for the gluten-free and vegetarian in our group. Friendly efficient prompt service. We didn't have space for dessert. First visit, plan to return.

Poor quality food. Waitress was friendly and polite. Our meals were very disappointing as the Steak pie had 4 small pieces of meat and the rest was gravy and the pastry was not fully cooked. Horrible. Veggie burgers dry and tasteless. Restaurant was very cold and uncomfortable. We used to be regular customers before lockdown but now I think the ownership has changed. Came here as a couple in our 30s for a midweek date night without child in tow.Have always really rated Thyme but yesterday just wasn’t as good as normal,I had the fishcake but it was really dry,just lumps of potato and fish and then fried either side so no breadcrumb coating and didn’t have any flavouring.it came with tartare sauce which I’m not a fan of but ended up eating as the fishcake was inedible without it. I would have mentioned it if anyone had bothered to ask how the food was. Starters were lovely and my husband enjoyed his food but for me it wasn’t there best

Honest review for a normally good eatery. Went yesterday for a family meal. My starter was poor as prawns were rubbery as though they had been cooked some time before serving. Definitely not worth the £8.50 charged. Other family members said their veg was too tough to cut. Come on, Thyme, you can do loads better! On the plus side, staff were the usual friendly and courteous people.

Selection of modern European dishes. Could do with more daring options. Food is tasty and portions are good. Reasonable prices. Some good beers and wines. Slightly uncomfortable seating, but otherwise pleasant. Service is good.

Top quality food as always, and prompt and friendly service. Jenny had the Thyme fish cakes with chips and salad, a perennial favourite, while I had an excellent and very varied (& huge!) summer salad with truffle and Parmesan fries. Little danger of either of us going away hungry - & all the better for being paired with a glass of a tasty rosé for Jenny and a glass of Chenin Blanc for me. Just a shame we couldn’t sit in the delightful courtyard out the back, on a warm and still evening, but apparently it’s being levelled or resurfaced for safety reasons. A very good meal, good value, and just what we needed.

Excellent choice of food & presented lovely.Husband had a steak & ale pie with chunky chips, he said it was really tasty. I had panko breadcrumbed chicken with mozzarella & pesto. So GLAD I did because it was delicious ( it was the last 1 🤣🤣) The set menu choice was really tempting & looked great value for money but I was trying to avoid desserts. I wouldn't have had room to be honest, which is very unusual

Been to Thyme numerous times over the last couple of decades, and it is consistently great. Simple enough for but very well delivered, a real neighbourhood bistro. It's almost always bustling too, but friendly and accommodating. Recommended.

Lovely friendly atmosphere from the moment we walked in. We chose a seat in the window and were promptly served some water and provided with menus. I asked about gluten free options as I'm coeliac and I was pleasantly surprised at the knowledge the waitress had around the menu. She went through the whole menu with me stating how each dish could be amended. Then she double checked a few dishes with the chef too. It was fantastic to have such a positive experience, I didn't manage to get the waitresses name but her service was second to none! So thank you. Great food, good selection of drinks and a calm and relaxed atmosphere. Would be great if you had a gf menu or listed the gluten free options on your main menu. It would definitely bring in more custom 😀

We had beef roasts and the marmalade sponge with orange sorbet. Everything was absolutely fantastic. We live in Manchester and will be driving back just to eat at this gorgeous restaurant. Service was fantastic, music banging, roasted perfect, we like to critique but there was nothing on this plate that we could turn our noses by up at. Roast carrots & potatoes were sensational. The beef roasted to perfection was sliced lovely and thick. Greens were grand, red cabbage and to top it all, a wonderfully crispy and fluffy Yorkshire pud 🤤🤤🤤 Service was cracking and we shared a pudding which truly was superb. Wish we lived closer cos we’d be here all the time. Thank you Thyme Team! 😀😀😀

Came early doors on a Friday night for an impromptu bite to eat with a friend. Extensive choice of grub to be had, and a nice selection of wines too. Food was tasty and the portions were generous, neither of us are veggie but we both opted for veggie dishes this eve, and we were not disappointed - something for everyone, and some decent fish choices on there too. Service was friendly enough, and it was reasonably priced for the area. Ingredients fresh and restaurant clean.

Very very disappointing. I took my children for some lunch ordered caeser salad and could not believe how bad it was. The romaine lettuce was covered with a tasteless white looking sauce. It was not worth £9 was charged.

Disappointed. We won't be going back we ordered 2 ceaser salads and a cheeseburger paid £9 for the ceasar salad that was literally covered some kind of mayonnaise looking tasteless white sauce with some anchovies, egg and croutons and the cheeseburger, the patty was tasteless and it was £15 .

We visited on a friday evening and had requested for the set menu, which ends at 18:30. We had booked a table for 18:30 and although the set menu had officially finished, staff were great in allowing us to use the set menu. It was quite crowded and cramped however food was lovely, staff were so nice and helpful and attentive. We had been recommended this place by a few people and it was lovely. Will be recommending to other people, great food, great staff and great value for money!

Limited menu for non fish eaters. Ended up with cheese burger as a main. Burger was ok but came with only oven chips and cost £15+!? Pushed the boat out with desserts and got an uncooked raw egg creme brulee, almost inedible. Other people in our party rated food very average and desert one star. Nice service and good table but super overpriced. Sorry , wont be back.

Once one of our favourite haunts, this place has descended into an average place with expensive wines. The waitress has no personality, the food is average and not all offerings were available. Pie of the day is £16 yet the best pies in Sheffield at The Broadfield are pounds cheaper with excellent quality. We won’t be going back unfortunately.

We came here for lunch on a Sunday. I do recommend booking in advance because it fills up quick. They had lots of vegetarian options, which seemed to be their forte, but also some for us non veggie. Portions size was great, I almost couldn't finish mine. Few but good kiddie options. I wasn't a fan of the menu on the wall, which was written a bit small and if it wasn't right in front of your table you had to stand around to read, but that's just me. Someone else might find that delightful.

Great find, food was excellent portions were huge. The four meet Sunday lunch is a must on any Sunday. The sticky toffee pudding is one of the best I have had. The normal menu looks good too can't wait to try it out soon. Staff were friendly and helpful. Couldn't recommend this place enough.

Disappointing. Visited with family for new year,but because we were a large group we pre chose our meals. Even so, the starters did not arrive for 35 minutes after our booked time, and when they arrived were nice but very small, not the amount you'd expect for the price. When our mains arrived, most of them were lovely with good portions however a few of our group had ordered a pasta dish which was very disappointing. It was literally just pasta, an extremely large amount of chili flakes, garlic, prawns and oil- no actual sauce. Desserts were mostly really lovely, however cheese board was not worth the price. It was just a very small amount of stilton worth maybe 50p and a couple of crackers.

Great small restaurant in Broomhill with a lovely atmosphere, good selection of quality homemade food and craft drinks with very welcoming and lovely staff on arrival, who take care from start to end to enjoy my time there. Highly recommend for lunch and dinner time or any occasion :) Thank you. I will definitely be back again :)

This is a safe choice for food. Usually very busy. Food is bistro type. There a blackboard that’s regularly updated with lots of choice Have a daily fixed price offer Food is always served hot and is cooked “ fine “ nothing over exciting but nothing to complain about either. Slightly on expensive side for quality. Portions average. Service last time I went was a bit “ too much “ - asked for drink order when immediately sat down. Stood by side of table after menus given for food while choosing what meal to order . Given bill while still eating ( had 20 mins of our slot still to go). Made it less relaxing experience.

Amazing supper club menu delivered by Matthew, Kevin and Anton. Every course was beautifully cooked and well presented. Ambience in the dining area excellent - spacious with attentive team making the experience. Thank you team Thyme Supper Menu - we’ll be back!

Their tiger prawn spaghetti is so delicious!

Very rainy day. Was glad to enter the cafe. We had a very tasty squid as a starter. I ordered a very generous prawn spaghetti with plenty of garlic. The spice level of chilli was perfect. My friend had the haddock fish cake with fries. The fish cake had plenty of haddock with great flavours. A very appreciated meal on a wet and windy day.

Been here several times before and enjoyed. Agree with other reviews though. It was really poor today. Pushed into a very cramped table even though several others were empty. Surrounded by screaming children running around, which isn't the restaurants fault as such, but why not give us a table away from others as there were so many empty? Had the chicken burger from set menu which was dry and tasteless. Chips were all 1cm or less which was weird. Also chips were full of black spots. When we asked the waiter he laughed. A second waiter came who said he would ask the chef, then proceeded to stand behind the bar. Service slow and terrible. Had to ask for everything, including a menu. They asked if we were ready to order before we were given a menu. Terrible, terrible, terible

Lots of empty tables yet when we arrived, we were told to sit a a table between a large party with someone sat on the end with her back to our table. To the other side was a table of 6 including 2 children who were climbing on the furniture and adults who thought leading a sing song was an acceptable way to behave. When the food came I asked for mayonnaise it was like a scene from Oliver Twist. The chicken burger was cremated, dry and unappetising. The salad consisted of a slice of gherkin and a ring of red onion. The chips were from the end of a bag of frozen chips and in little pieces. My friend had a chip that appeared to have had a face drawn on which all the staff thought was funny. No one asked if our food was ok or everything was alright (guessing they knew the answer). Food terrible, customer service terrible, environment terrible - would I recommend? I’d recommend to go somewhere else!

We googled dog friendly cafe's in Sheffield and Thyme comes up on several sites. On its own site it says nothing about a dog policy, so assumed the glowing other reviews were correct. Turned away when we arrived as turns out dogs not accepted. Fair enough, but please can you make this clear to potential customers on your website? It was very disappointing to be turned away yesterday.

Recently revisited after 10 years away from the city and was very happy to find Thyme Cafe still has the same warm atmosphere and fantastic food all these years later. The team were extremely welcoming and attentive, and the food was delicious. Lovely place in the heart of Broomhill.

I would like the business to answer why it has gone so wrong. I ordered the flank(Bavette). Therefore if the chef!!! understood this cut he would know how to cook it. I like it rare, I was TOLD it was cooked medium rare. It was presented well done. Therefore, it was sent back to the kitchen. And I was told this would be removed from my bill. No apology for the alleged chef’s incompetence.After that the serving staff became sullen and miserable. Thyme cafe was once a regular visit which was once thronging with customers. Today, sit where you want. Want chips. Look forward to a mass produced product. RIP Thyme Cafe. Never again and it is your all own fault. And I have no regrets in saying that.

Call me old fashioned, but all I ask from a bistro/restaurant is... serve me hot food, in fair portions that appears to have had a little effort put into it. I've been to Thyme twice now, and on both occasions, they've excelled in each metric. You might laugh, but lukewarm food seems to be a trend nowadays, but not for Thyme — always piping hot, fresh and bearing the hallmarks of 'made right now, entirely from scratch... just for you... no warmed-up nonsense here.' On each visit, I ordered form the set menu; going for the burger both times. Good lord. Huge! Huge, piping hot & tasty. The presentation is quite something, too... and that is what I mean about 'effort' — these guys excel in the areas other restaurants often overlook; final execution. Everything is so beautifully arranged/assembled on the plate (or board if you order a burger). Today, I ordered the Crispy Cajun marinated chicken burger and it looked majestic — not just huge, but meticulously presented. In fact, such was the display, that I felt as though eating it would undermine the chef's diligence and craft. I did eat it, of course, and the taste matched the sight — elite! For dessert, I ordered the apple & blackberry crumble. In a word... otherworldly. Top 3 crumbles of all time, easily. The topping had bite and crunch, while the filling was chunky, smooth and sweet... but crucially, not sickly sweet. Beautifully balanced. Of course... it was hot, now warm, hot! Bravo. Finally, the team — always friendly, always attentive, always make you feel at home. Love this place — a real gem.

I’d heard really good things about this place so asked my friend to come for Sunday lunch with me. The table we were allocated was very close to next table of 5; just felt cramped. Dinner came swimming in gravy plus large gravy jug?? Burnt yorkshire pudding that I could not eat. We both came outside and agreed we’d not be back and that neither of us had enjoyed the meal. Shame really I’d looked forward to it all week.

Nice set up, but short of options if you want a light meal

Supper club 'upstairs at thyme,' definitely a wonderful culinary experience. The upstairs has been newly decorated and looks clean and fresh, creating a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The food was delicious as always, a combination of wonderful flavours and textures complimented with a wine pairing. My favourite from the evening would be the torched mackerel, and the soy butter glazed scallop, beautifully cooked and presented. A great evening would definitely recommend.

This place has steadily gone downhill over past few years, we have been disappointed the last few times we have been but keep giving it a chance as weve been customers there for 20 years. Menu leaves you wondering what you would actually want. This time when we went as a family and we mentioned the meal was bland when the waitress asked and we were given a sympathetic smile; when the obviously wealthy older couple next to us complained about their meal they were give a replacement meal and a free coffee. Left to it by waiting staff, had to keep going up and asking for things. Felt undervalued as customer and won't be returning now. Food isn't anything special now, you can get better at a decent pub. Shame, used to be great.

The restaurant has changed a little bit. It is still one of the best places to eat in Sheffield, in my opinion, but there are just a few little things which are declining the standards. 1) The length of time it took for the food to be served. 2) Hot drinks being served tepid. 3) Being called 'guys' by some of the waiting staff (a massive bug-bear of mine when dining in a nice restaurant - what happened to 'sir' and 'madam'?). 4) Desserts at £7! (Not that I would entertain the idea of ever paying that for a dessert but some would). The food was still tasty but it doesn't seem to have the cut-above standard that it always used to have. I would still return, though,....at the moment.

Popular place on the Friday night we had booked, luckily. Great choice of dishes on the menu and we had made them aware of dietary issues beforehand so they did offer a choice of the dishes without gluten and dairy. The food we had was very good as looked all the dishes we saw delivered to other tables nearby. Seating is quite basic and tables are quite close but it was comfortable. Not a lot of parking nearby as it's in a busy area.

We've been going to Thyme cafe since it opened 20 years ago. It used to be a much loved place for the family to have a good meal. It seems very much stuck in a rut, and has become increasingly tired over the past couple of years. It's so tired now, that it's dead, deceased, beyond the mortal coil. The menu hasn't changed in years, irrespecitive of season etc, but the quality has. It has deteriorated to the point that we no longer wish to eat there anymore. It's a sad situation, but if the restaurant refuses to move on, it's customers will....

Tremendous food, people, place. Would make it a regular spot. Fish cakes and their burgers are beyond compare. Check out the specials board, too, for that unusual dish you weren't expecting. On hot days, try to reserve a table in the outside garden, hard to believe you're not in Sheffield.

Thyme Cafe is more of a restaurant in my eyes. While it doesn't have any snobbery on its premises, it does deliver high class food with great flavours with helpful staff. I wouldn't recommend going in for just a simple jacket potato or a panini, but if you're looking for tasty risotto, perfectly prepared fish or tasty veg and grains arranged followed by a dessert board that's so good it's hard to choose just one, then this is the place for you. Good for lunch but even better for a dinner you can savour.

The cafe has a nice feel to it & the staff are friendly & welcoming. We chose from the set menu, 2 courses & a reasonable glass of chardonnay for £18. The asparagus starters were really flavoursome but the crispy poached egg was overdone so...

Great place for interesting informal eating. Friendly staff, good food from a varied menu. Well selected wine list with very fair prices by the glass, not exorbitantly marking up the bottle price.

Excellent choice of meats for a Sunday lunch. I've enjoyed the belly pork before, but this time went for the rare beef.

We met one of our friends there for lunch. My wife & I are pescatarian so to hear that salmon was off the menu did straight away reduce our options on the menu. But I mostly have soup to start & the Spicy Carrot was delicious & for main I had Tiger Prawn Spaghetti. My wife had Salt & Pepper Squid & Thyme Cafe Fishcake. We both had lemon cake for dessert with a latte. Great food, service & value for money. Really recommend this establishment it has a real nice ambience.

Lovely cafe, great atmosphere. Service very attentive. Had the Sunday lunch menu. Dined at 1345 and by then most of the roast was off the menu nonetheless lovely lunch with family. Reasonable prices, but maybe not for the Sunday lunch, as £19 for one course is a bit over priced for what is on the plate. Perhaps better during the week when not as busy. If going on Sunday bedt to book. Only 3 stars for the food from me.

Firstly - the food is excellent. Gourmet, properly made in a real restaurant kitchen. We ate on Saturday lunchtime, and enjoyed the experience However - it is pricey, not "Cafe" prices, certainly. And the service at peak times is somewhat slow, as they are taking time to construct each meal. We waited 40,50 minutes?
