What A STUNNING pub. The friendliest folk in the world. This is my new favourite little peaks pub, and my dogs agree after all the treats the landlord gave them. Roaring fires, great beer and lovely locals. Driving past it, it looks almost as though it has closed down years ago, don't be deceived!

Called in for a drink only to be greeted by the worst reception ever. Woman behind the bar couldn’t have made it more obvious that we were not welcome, doubt she’s ever cracked a smile before, as for the locals, they were just a bunch of toffs who looked down on us. Quite ironic when all of us are local country lads just out for the day, I won’t bother frequenting this place anytime soon.

What a glorious little gem we found in The Three Stags Head. Quaint little pub (how they used to be), roaring fire, absolutely lush locals (who may live 20 miles away). The landlord and lady are the loveliest people too. If it wasn't the tall tales of travellers gone by, top tips on where to visit then it was the 9pm snacks that kept us going back for more. What's more, the ale is simply superb. Please visit and tell all your friends to go too. We were camping near by for 3 nights and spent each night exchanging tales with the locals in here.

Beautiful little place. Not seen a pub like this in years. Honestly I fell in love with the place, but I get the distinct feeling it caters for the locals only. Touch of the Slaughtered Lamb feel about it. However I’d totally recommend it for the experience of seeing what a real, small old school inn should be. Wonderful place. But I didn’t feel comfortable enough to go back sadly.

I've been passing this pub regularly for 50+ years and had never called in. We popped in when walking in the area and were blown away by the friendliness of everyone inside the small snug, the quality and choice of the beer and the atmosphere. A pub to take you back centuries rather than years. Loved the stories about the deceased owner. We called in the following day as well and was gutted to find the dark beer (Black Lurcher) was not available. It is only brewed by Abbeydale for this pub. I took some bottles instead. Can't wait to go back and try the cask version.

We were staying in Tideswell with friends who knew of this pub and took us there for "an hour" on a Thursday tea time. After sampling the gorgeous Black Lurcher beer we ended up having "just one more" for the next 5 hours. Really good time with locals and travellers coming in at regular intervals and including us in their conversations. If you like your ale real, it doesn't come much more real than this, though they do have lager too. Sandwiches are available but it is the beer you and conversation that feel you here. If you like chrome, velour and cocktails its probably not for you.I have even stopped off since lockdown ended and bought a few bottles of Black Lurcher as there doesn't seem to be anywhere else you can get it

Whether driving along the A623 or walking near Tideswell, Litton Dale, this pub is an essential stopping point. Friendly staff and clientele, always with time to chat and a story to tell. Excellent local beer (Abbeydale) complimented by great local snacks and a warm fire. From the outside the place looks derelict and abandoned. Step inside and it quickly becomes clear that this is a locals pub, and they don't like outsiders. I politely asked a local several times to please move their chair so I could go through the door to the toilet, eventually with much huffing, puffing and glaring they allowed me through. A good choice of ale, only soft drink option was room temperature lemonade. Stuffed animals everywhere and general grubbiness. Could be a fantastic traditional pub with a lick of paint and a change in attitude.

Directed into the (not obvious) car park by the landlord we saw a free-range guinea pig (and that was before we’d had a drink) darting around. Entering the pub we were greeted by blind/deaf Billy the West Highland White who sat on the sofa and was not averse to being petted. Very friendly locals and landlord/ladies, delicious pork pie from the local butcher, first class beer, real fire. There is usually home-made fruit pie and there will soon be soup once the kitchen’s been decorated. A proper historic unspoiled country pub with antique furniture which to our mind is a national treasure. Who could resist the Farting Dog cider? Can’t recommend it too highly.

We walked from Cressbrook to this pub on Saturday and were completely blown away by it. Such an interesting pub - a real blast from the past. Superb beer. We drank the Absalom and Birchover Best brewed in Birchover by a Sardinian! Open fire and friendly locals and lots of dogs! Sat with two locals who we'd also met at the Flying Childers in Stanton in Peak. We loved it. Had to cut it short due to a family emergency....which meant we had to get back to the car in Cressbrook fast. The landlady Pat heard us talking and offered all 5 of us a lift there in her Volvo. Only cos there had been a rush on and stores were running low, I had to move on to absolution or risk the black lurcher. Another great night preceded by a good sing on the Sunday afternoon. Meet a young lad there who was the sole survivor from his party as the rest had gone back to the tent to play games. He comes once a year and like me thinks this is the best pub in England - Bar None! The pub welcomes real drinkers and folk that want to talk to strangers - you have to hutch up and share a table if you want a seat If you find that type of pub intimidating then maybe you shouldn’t be in a pub anyway, you deff shouldn’t clutter up the Stags and to be honest you would be better off at a Pizza Hut anyway.

Wandering about the Peak District lately and left the Red Lion in Litton where banter was good and ale flowing and after reading the CAMRA bible dropped over to Wardlow to see what was happening in the 300 year old pub. The front room was packed with around 12 locals when we entered and we were greeted with deathly silence. Ordered drinks and escaped to the second room adjoining this one. Loads of portraits of dogs on wall but also a stuffed Fox in the corner and one above the door. Decent beer but a weird place tbh. Great and exceptional old-style pub with strong local character (landlord, decor and clientele), excellent ales -- and fun folk-music sessions with very good-humoured, talented and welcoming local musicians at 4pm on Sunday (and we're not even folk music fans). Not one for the snotty city crowd but very warm/friendly to city or country folks who don't have their noses in the air. Far too few totally-ungentrified pubs like this still around. A little pub with absolutely no frills or adornments and full of 'old inn character' but on a Sunday at 2.00pm also full of local farm hands discussing their illegal fox hunting activities. I sat on the one available seat in the one tiny room - it only holds about 10 people. I was then told by a newly arrived local that I was sitting in his seat and that I'd have to move. The landlord, himself a similar local, acquiesced to this behaviour without comment. The only food appeared to be 'a' pork pie. Whether I would be expected to share this with the locals or that it was someone else's pie, was unclear. This could be a wonderful time warp drinking experience but sadly the locals seem to regard the place as their own and do not take kindly to 'others' even though the landlord is willing to take their money.

What a shame!. Been going on and off for years. Yes it's an amazing building and it's a real step back in time, that's why I still have to give it a star. However.... Be warned. The lunatics are in danger of taking over the asylum. We had to leave sharpish as we received several extremely rude comments from the locals which are not repeatable in this forum. We ignored all the threatening comments but the physical threats got more apparent. I didn't want to believe the other bad reviews as i suspected they could have been looking for trouble. I was wrong. If you go, just don't step out of line. I'm sure the locals who read this will be raising there glasses in glory but the saying, what goes around comes around springs to mind.

Had visited a few weeks ago and camped next door. I knew the pubs reputation and went in trying to respect the place and the staff. The respect on this occasion was reciprocated and my friend and I had a very nice evening chatting to the landlord and his wife. This time however we returned with some more mates and again camped next door. We got in got drinks no problem. Until one of the locals who seems to think it is his pub! Decided to take the law into his own hands and have a go at one of our party. We brushed the incident aside and left to do other things. Later on 3 of us decided to pop back for a nightcap BIG MISTAKE. Again we got in got beer and sat down no problem. Until one of the lads decided to take a photograph of one of the regulars asleep. All hell broke loose. The land lady and barman who upto this point had been pleasant to us turned nasty in a nano second. Beer was snatched from us and we were kicked out. The same regulars who were in at opening time were still in just before closing time. Nice antiquated pub shame about the attitude from staff and locals.

We found a reference to this pub in a somewhat out of date guide book. What we weren't prepared for was an authentic and most definitely no frills old English pub. Not much more than 12 feet square, the main bar had a handful of rickety tables all occupied by the most friendly locals each accompanied by an assortment of dogs each of whom was as friendly as its master/ mistress. We could have felt uncomfortable walking in to this intimate environment but we were given a warm welcome and sat down and chatted to all of the other customers - mainly about dogs as we were accompanied by our lovely "Hector". We were shown a second room which is used once a week for folk evenings. The pub is only open on a Friday lunchtime and at the weekends, so we felt privileged to have stumbled upon it. Stone floors, cranky furniture, decor left untouched for probably half a century, blazing coal fires on a wet July day and very potent beer indeed. The only food on offer was bread and cheese and a pork pie. We didn't order food but on reflection wish we had. It was served on plates made by the landlord in his adjacent pottery. Oh and not to forget the taxidermy. What an experience but don't go there if you're looking for a trendy gastro pub! We loved it!

We had been meaning to visit this place for a very long time. Last Sunday afternoon, at the end of a nearby walk, we finally made it inside. The two rooms were very busy, with live music in the second room (several musicians taking it in turns to perform - singing, flute, guitar, indoor pipes, excellent range of music). Made to feel very welcome despite the fact we were turning up in a pub full of adults with our two children (aged 10 and 6) in tow. The bar room is like stepping back in time, with a very old fireplace, stone floor and furniture that could be the same age as the pub. Choice of three or four local ales, also some interesting bottled Belgian beer and Gwatkin cider behind the bar. Our son had had a bad hayfever reaction during the walk and had puffy, watery eyes - the landlord (we now know he is called Geoff) asked if he was OK, and the lady came out from behind the bar to our table to offer us one of her own hayfever tablets. Our daughter was absolutely mesmerised by the music and by the friendly and very well behaved lurcher. If you like pubs where you are able to join in with gentle banter, and you don't plan to order lager, then you should visit. We will be back again when we are next in the area - we didn't see the mummified cat this time! Don't know if this has been mentioned in any other reviews, but this pub inspired the start of a short story (Neil Gaiman's 'Black Dog'.)Don't park in Geoff's car park (across the road) if you are not intending to use the pub, though - he will spot you!

When I say that "I know more great real ale pubs than any woman in this country" ... I defy anyone to prove me wrong and ESPECIALLY pubs in the county of Derbyshire! So I can say "xxxx pub is my spiritual home" or "yyy pub is my spiritual home" but THIS pub .... The Three Stags Heads at Wardlow Mires .... seriously IS my spiritual home!I moved back to the North East about 5 years ago and went out of my way, just yesterday, to walk in there, smell the fire, kiss Geoff & Pat, stroke the wippets (one of which was standing ON the table when I left ... and I had to fight back a tear as I left the car park.Don't go in there if you are unwilling to a/ share your space b/ share a table c/ want to use your mobile phone and wouldn't appreciate being told to "go outside" with it and d/ struggle to interact with strangers! However .... if you a/ love surprises b/ value the art of banter & conversation (not politics or religion ofcourse - this is a pub after all) c/ love an excellently kept real ale and d/ happen to have either a friday night, saturday or sunday free .... then this is by FAR the most inviting place to land for an hour or so. When I say 'inviting' I mean .... if you are grey, the invite will be grey; if you are open then the greeting will also be open! I've always found it to be a fabulous place that I never want to leave! They don't really do food .... but they MIGHT do. They don't really like to serve tea or coffee .... but they WILL do. I recommend you go and "see what occurs" but I would suggest you DO sit for a while! Don't walk in and walk out. Take your time. Look who's in. Listen to the craic and if you have anything to offer .... join in. And finally .... go again and again. Especially if you are on your own ... no nicer place to BE .... so long as you can apply all my various suggestions (see above).I will be back! Kay x

Picture a tiny bar, stone floor, a few wooden tables and 3-legged stools; a hot range fire place; dark strong ale in hand made earthenware mugs (no lager, woohoo!); chatting with locals with strong, often incomprehensible accents; lurchers and whippets, more important than people almost, scrapping over treats; game pie...you get the idea! I love this pub - always feel lucky that it's still going and another magical experience can be had. Just one beer on when we arrived (landlord had been surprised by the huge turnout over last few days and two of the other beers had run dry) but no matter. We retired to the second room, had a roaring fire and big wooden table all to ourselves. The lurchers paid us the odd visit. You can just sit and meditate over a pint here, or, go to the tiny main bar and chat to the locals if they take to you, and be glad that pubs like this still exist. I read a review of this place that said, take this pub as you find it and expect the staff and the locals to treat you as they find you. Good advise. I feel blessed to have had another afternoon in here today.

Having been on a 2 week beer tour of the midlands this place is easily in my top three places visited it’s not a pub for everybody and is as peculiar as any I care to name – with some of the fittings and fireplace (not to mention the odd local) to be at least 200 years old. The furniture is aged and creaky, the smell of wood smoke heavy, the beer strong and the drinkers friendly. On entering the first thing I noticed was how busy it was with locals sat or perched around the place and a pack of assorted dogs occupying any spot not occupied by folks. There appeared to be a race between two whippets as to which could eat a pork pie the fastest which was the highlight of the day for some judging by the amounts of laughter and quaffing of beer. And as beer goes they have a few good uns, at most about 3 taps with one of them being Abbeydale Lurcher a beer brewed exlusivley for this pub: a very nice porter that at 8% demands a bit of respect when drinking it, the others were an ale and sometimes a cider with prices so cheap it would make weatherspoons blush for shame. word of warning though: They DON’T DO LAGER, the comical sign is not just there for giggles, they don’t do it, don’t ask. Oh and mobile phones- take the odd picture by all means but don’t sit and have a 30 minute chat with Carl from accounts, you get the feeling that many come here to avoid that aspect of life. Food wise, we didn’t eat, but saw a cheeseboard that was being shared around customers as well as the odd ragtag dog; with a dairy selection that looked like somebody had emptied out a deli counter on a tray and added biscuits as an afterthought. But this is how the locals like it and many seemed to have brought their own vast selection of condiments with them including pickled onions. On Sunday they have a folk music night in the second room, where they play a selection of instruments and sign the old songs, sometimes cheerful sometimes sorrowful always meaningful and worth listening too.The pubs opens only from Friday to Sunday and the owners are potters who make tankards for drinkers as well as artwork for sale, parking is just around the corner near an old barn thing and camping can be done in the local fields – this is a great place if you leave your city mind, politics and go in with an open mind.

Went here with friends and a baby for lunch. Food was simple pub food which was nice and tasty, however pie could have had more gravy and my tuna sandwich could have had less mayonnaise. Good choice of ale. Nice clean toilets and friendly welcoming staff.

Pub is small like the Tardis, quite crowded, warm in temperature (coal fires & smoke) and atmosphere. Expect to talk to everyone, be approached by many dogs, and to experience some banter. The seats are not comfortable, there is no phone signal, the beer is dangerously strong, as is the traffic on the A road < 1 metre from the door. The night we went there was no food.Despite some ambivalence here I strongly recommend the Three Stags; unless you are a touch timid!Camping is available next door behind a cottage (very basic).DO GO!

This is an absolute joy of a pub, blending an almost mediaeval ambience (and interior) with locally brewed beer, hot chocolate in homemade pottery mugs, mildly eccentric staff and patrons and a genuine warmth of character and typically charming dark sense of humour - those of a fragile disposition might not get what this pub and the people are about, but they represent a small bastion of old British (part Viking?) culture and identity which should be breathed in slowly over a warming pint of ale for restitution of one's soul.I come from London and have my preferred pubs and bars down here - based on character, atmosphere, beer, clientele, and the extras of music, sports, food and comedy - depending on my needs or mood and not necessarily in that order. But none can match what's on offer here and I make it a highlight of my sporadic visits to the area (more so in recent years as other pubs have closed - e.g. the Bull's Head in Wardlow or lost something of their charm such as the Red Lion in Litton where children under 6 are now officially banned). I was there on New Year's day with my French wife and 3 kids and our friends with their 2 boys - all not only welcomed by the friendly barmaid but given plates of biscuits, mince pies, buttered panatone, etc! Then after a couple of rounds the kids were taken home by the wives in an act of pure sacrifice and philanthropic goodness, leaving my Dutch friend Charles and me to move from the reasonably large side room, to the cosier first room between fire and bar to continue enjoying the beer and striking up entertaining conversation with the eclectic patrons for another couple of hours. The dogs of course were all about as others mention and we heard tell of a visit once from Kylie Minogue from the apparently brusque but evidently warmhearted owner... once we stopped talking football and didn't try to move his fireside chair out of place or use it for coats...incidentally the facilities were in perfect working order - both sets - and I know this as we had to use the ladies while the gents was being cleaned. To sum up, go and enjoy it for what it is - a special place that has an atmosphere all of its own and that you participate in creating. The more you put in the more you'll get out - though the longer you stay the harder it is to leave!

We go there, well used to go there, once a year on our annual pub stroll in the peak. Last night a local who seemed well known to the barman and landlord was grossly offensive to use. Matters rapidly escalated to physical violence from him to one of our group. Thankfully we restrained him and quickly departed. Even though his action lead to a lot of broken glasses and nearly broken bones for us the barman and landlord didn't seem to give two hoots. We had heard, and dismissed rumours that this can be a dangerous place. Be warned; the rumours are true. Avoid. We won't be back!

We have been coming to this pub for some years now. We do a Christmas walk that finishes in this pub each Christmas time. In the past we have enjoyed the quirky timeless feel of this pub and the music. However, on our last 2 visits we have found the staff drunk and very unfriendly, broken toilets and aggressive customers. An unpleasant episode a year or two ago had occurred when one of the regulars at the bar had produced a knife after some friends had not fully understood ' the rules' that the bar staff have about mobile phones. We put this down to a one off and returned this week. A miserable greeting awaited with the door locked when we arrived well before closing time. Having gone inside for a drink a man then threatened members of our party almost starting an all out brawl. For the staff this appeared to be a fairly common occurrence and they appeared to have no interest in resolving the situation. We left quickly. Awful, dangerous pub. I will certainly not be returning which is a shame as some of our party have been going there for the last 20 years.

where to start with this hidden gem? The three stags takes you back in time to how pubs used to be. With open fires. Dogs sprawled everywhere and a friendly atmosphere. Zoe the barmaid was a delight and was knowledgable about the ale and menu (they dont serve lager). The locals asked talked to us and we were made to feel incredibly welcome. We jad an amazing meal, freshly prepared by a young lady called Amber, she is going to be a star chef one day! We will be back as soon as possible

We visited the Three Stags on the way back from a camping trip after seeing it in CAMRA's The Good Beer Guide App. We'd also been recommended it by a couple we'd met on our travels who were also visiting interesting pubs in the area. With such glowing reviews from different sources we made it our mission to get to this pub on Sunday evening. The Stags is only open Friday-Sunday, which might suggest it struggles for business, but the place was heaving when we arrived around 7pm on Sunday. Running low on cash we reluctantly settled for half pints of locally-brewed ale as the pub doesn't accept card, but that was fine with us (the beer was fantastically kept and only £2.80 for two halves). Tripping over the pack of dogs we made our way into the adjoining room which was less busy than the main bar and sat in the corner. Almost instantly we were spoken to by a regular who asked us questions about our trip. The friendly atmosphere was continued by others in the room as they joined in the conversation which was warm and welcoming. It was then we found out that Sunday night is music night as these locals brought out their weird and wonderful instruments, including mouth organs and traditional Irish drums. Each took it in turn to give a rendition of a favourite folk tune and even my partner joined in singing along for which she was applauded. We were even treated to a drink by one of the locals as he recounted his own personal story of lost fingers, a bag of peas and a hungry dog. We regretfully had to leave to continue our journey otherwise we would have stayed the whole night, but we will certainly be returning again despite the journey time! If you enjoy pubs that have kept the same look for the past 50 years, friendly locals, traditional music, good beer and dogs then this is definitely the pub for you!

This place is a real drinkers pub. They don't serve lager and they don't have ice but it is really friendly. Everyone talks to everyone. It is small and dark and there were fires burning when we were there because it was a wet miserable evening. Really cosy. The food looked very nice but we did not eat there. Lots of dogs in the bar but all very well behaved.

I have been visiting this pub for over 20 years and absolutely love everything about it, other reviews suggest keeping it a secret and I agree. Only people of good character should be allowed to visit this place as it is special. Both Pat and Jeff who run the pub are real characters and have a great sense of humour. If you want good food, good company, good beer and a good old fashioned pub then this is for you. I could spend hours telling you stories of days past but I haven't got enough space, just don't ask for larger.

Have visited this pub on & off (but sadly more off than on due to distance) for decades & it never changes. Which is just wonderful. Great beers, yummy home-made food served on plates from the pottery. Relaxed atmosphere as there is no music, no slot machines, no TV. Just a warm & friendly intimate atmosphere where you do not engage in private conversation because everyone joins in & the whole place just reverberates with voices as everyone talks to each other, along with the owner & barman. It's like spending an evening or lunchtime with a group of friends. If you want smart decor, plush carpets, matching crockery, trendy cutlery, microwaved food, tabelcloths & flowers . . . go elsewhere as you will be sadly disappointed & might not enjoy. The beers are strong - at 8% the Black Lurcher gives you a great night's sleep. Also recommend the Gwatkin Cider (bottled) when it's in stock - proper cloudy scrumpy style like someone washed their socks in it!

Offered a choice of 4 interesting ales - opted for the Abbeydale Absolution which was delicious. Then sat down and were soon welcomed in to the banter and crossword completion. We have been going to this remote old pub for about 30 years as it has always been known as a good pub to hear musicians of every kind play. When we camped in the nearby fields (as part of a caving club's bi-annual family camping weekends) we have always been made most welcome by Geoff and Pat who have been landlord/lady there for many a year.We have started going back recently and just a couple of weeks ago we were back for a reunion of some of the same caving club's older members camping in the adjoining field. There aren't so many musicians going in the pub nowadays but we had enough of our own to have a really good musical night in the back room. Just like old times. I have seen some bad reviews about the landlord on here but we have always found Geoff to be a good sort (if a little eccentric) but one must bear in mind that he is not getting any younger and I thought he was starting to look quite frail.I will always have fond memories of this pub and will continue to go back for camping reunions whener they are held. The pub is very olde worlde with a latched front door and two quite small rooms, the front room (where the bar is) has a big old fireplace and flagged floors. You can order a meal if you like and they only sell beer on pump so please don't ask for lager as you'll get a funny look. They do, however, stock Becks bottled lager and, if you ask nicely, they will put some bottles in the fridge for you.If you're looking for posh - go somewhere else. If you want olde worlde charm - drop in for a pint.

After our last visit to the pub we were sufficiently impressed to rave about it for some time and return. On this visit the barman was again friendly, but the landlord who sat on his perch by the fire, was thoroughly unpleasant. One of the hunting dogs came to us and weed a massive puddle on the floor, which we cleaned up in the end. On leaving, one of our party held the door for the one remaining, and the landlord not realising that there was still one to come loudly called him a word, which is not even allowed to be implied on trip advisor (for good reason), and which in my view is not on, in any pub, real ale or not.A shame really as otherwise it would would likely be a fantastic place, but unfortunately we will not be going back and will not recommend others to either, unless the landlord can learn some manners. Fortunately there are numerous other lovely real ale pubs in the area.

A must visit - an unspoilt, last of it's kind, historic, old fashioned pub, with a roaring fire and warm welcome. The mix of locals and walkers, young and old, male and female made for a lovely atmosphere at 4pm on a Saturday. Although I did not eat here, I tried all four of the local ales from Abbeydale, who brew good beer but not usually as well kept as here. I have tasted beer as well kept as this but not for many a year, these guys know how look after real ale big time. If the beer is anything to go on their food will probably be pretty good too. Note only open Friday to Sunday.

A bit on the snug side (shove up and share your table), only open weekends (thank God or I'd be an alcoholic), wine served in tumblers (why would you with beers like this?), no juke box (would be drowned out by the conversation), plates don't match (handmade), not enough menus to go round (written on one scrap of paper - wait your turn), dogs allowed to stand on the tables (if you're lucky enough to be graced), tables and chairs don't match (acquired over decades), hazards in each room (open fires), no free papers (unless you count Farmers Weekly).Forget coming in here for a quick pint. Once you've crossed the threshold you won't come out until closing. If you've got any sense.Quite simply the best pub in the world.....

This Inn is fantastic. It is a very long time since I have been in a pub which concentrates on serving real ale and not the decorations. I'm afraid I need to attach a story to this review - the review bit won't amount to much more than a recommendation.Nearly 20 years ago, my wife and I hired a transit van to collect a freezer from my parents for our new house. We trawled through the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for some decent beer with the plan to stop off somewhere in the country. "The Stags" looked appealing so we threw an airbed in the back of the van and set off.We arrived and parked across the road in the little carpark and I tried to blow up the airbed with the foot pump in the back of the van. Seeing the difficulty caused by my 6'2" frame in the limited headroom of the van, I was relieved by my wife with instruction to go and get the beers in.Arriving at the bar, my eyes were immediately drawn to the 8% dark ale (which may have been the Lurcher which is still there, or something similar). I took a taste and it was delicious so I took the two pints back to a table and waited, pleased with my selection. I had weaned Herself off lager and lime with Theakston's Old Peculiar so I knew this brew would be a hit.Carolyn came in some minutes later, exhausted from blowing up the airbed, quite hot and in need of refreshment. I proudly presented the treacly stuff but she needed something lighter to quench her thirst. So I got her something else and had the two pints of 8% to myself. For the second round I sent her to the bar to choose something from the selection of continental beers and she returned with a couple of bottles of something equally toxic.By the end of those, accompanied by the skiffle group which had formed in the snug, we felt one more would be nice before retiring for the night. Both intoxicated by the music, the atmosphere and the alcohol, I decided something a little weaker was in order but stayed with the bottled beers.Back at the table, I discovered both pint-sized bottles weighed in at 9% and 10% ABV.Gulp! This was the first time my wife had seen me properly drunk and disgracefully (and illegally) I drove the van up a nearby lane and parked up for the night.Boy, did I sleep soundly, with only a little feeling of being somewhat unwell!Next morning, we set off for the folks, stopping at a Little Chef for some breakfast not far down the road. This was definitely a pub to come back to!So a couple of years went by and we went searching for the pub, but like Brigadoon, it had disappeared. It was not where I thought it should have been and we went home unfulfilled. We dug out Good Beer Guides and could not find it - we thought it was in Derbyshire, but probably due to my state of health that night, could not be entirely sure. Maybe it was Staffordshire, or maybe I was completely mistaken and it was Yorkshire.Every time we traveled into roughly the area that looked right, we drove along all the roads and lanes in the vicinity looking for this pub whose name and location neither of us could recall.I vaguely remembered the layout of the pub relative to it's car park, so I even spent what must be a few hours over the years picking my way through Google Earth looking for satellite views of promising candidates - all to no avail. Then a few weeks ago (20 years later), I was on Google again and thought I found it.The carpark was not where I remembered it, and neither was the fork in the road or the lake nearby where we laid up for the night, but it was a possible.I was singing in the choir for a service at nearby Stoney Middleton so I drove past it and thought it looked slightly familiar. I didn't want my find to go unshared though, so I didn't call in.Instead I booked a two night break, mid week, at the nearby Monsall Head Hotel so that we could investigate together and celebrate if appropriate. The Hotel was awful (see my review on here) and the Stags Heads, it turned out, only opened weekends.Doh! We were obviously destined never to get to this pub ever again!Three weeks ago however, we were heading for a holiday in East Yorkshire and so I thought we could start off with a night at a wonderful B&B (The Hollow in Little Longstone) and finally put our quest to bed.It IS that pub from 20 years ago. It has NOT changed one bit. The beer IS just as good as we remembered. The atmosphere IS just as conducive to having a great time!In addition, we have tried the food too now and can recommend that as well. The menu is on a scrap of paper behind the bar and depends on what the lady of the house decides to cook - totally in keeping with the place.I had the steak, ale and blue cheese pie - Carolyn the same but without the cheese, served with potatoes and beautifully cooked vegetables. All washed down with the wonderful Lurcher ale which is a meal in itself. This is a traditional pub, unchanged for decades (and I can vouch for that!).As such it will not appeal to those looking for anything akin to a Harvester.Ask for a pint of lager and you will likely be offered abuse! This is a real ale pub serving just that along with home cooked grub. For some of us, you cannot ask for more. There is now a big red spot on my OS map in indelible marker pen - just in case The Stags disappears again! There is no website for the pub, but there is a reference to it at the site offered below.A note on the ratings I have given this place.Given that the overall rating is going to be an average of all the categories, I cannot mark it down on anything particular without affecting the total rating. However, it is a spit and sawdust pub not a restaurant, so for "Romance", strictly speaking it is terrible. Likewise for "Special Occasions" unless your occasion is just an excuse to get mildly inebriated on Lurcher. "Food", although marked "Excellent" by me should be judged as befitting a spit and sawdust ale house, not a Michelin starred restaurant. If ale is your thing - GO!

Without doubt one of the best pubs I've ever been in, and I've been in one or two in my life!!!There are only 2 bad review on here about this place: 1 from someone on a hen party and one from somebody who was annoyed there were no soft drinks on tap. I am sure Geoff will not be at all bothered that they would not be coming back as this is not the sort of clientele that would fit in there. My wife and I turned up just before 7 on a Friday night and bagged the last table in the small front bar. Bearing in mind it was a truly miserably rainy night, it was astonishing how many people turned up and packed in there, and it's not long before you're deep in conversation with whoever happens to be next to you at the time - exactly how a pub should be - I like pubs I can take the wife to all night but not have to talk to her too much!! A lot of the regulars bring their dogs in, all are well-behaved, even after a pint or two, not a single growl or scrap and there must have been more than a dozen in there by the time we left. The beer is perfectly kept. Abbeydale's Deception, Absolution and Brimstone, plus the poky Black Lurcher stout/dark ale.If you want food it's a case of "what have you got today?". The menu is had-written on a small sheet of paper and I reckon it consists of whatever animal has bitten the dust locally that day. Can't get fresher or better than that. Wife had a beef stew with garden veg, and I had veal in cider and tarragon sauce, both eaten off the proprietor's homemade plates.I thought long and hard about whether to write a review of this pub, because this is a real pub full of hardworking people and not a place for fancy city weekender types who might read this review on their iPads, so it's not appropriate for it to be filled with that sort. However I decided to write this review to thank Geoff and the regulars for a brilliant night.

My friend was desperate to try this pub citing reviews for excellent food, in fairness its the sort of pub he loves. For me? definitely not, it was pretty small, two small rooms, old hunting lodge style décor which could do with freshening up.A small selection of Beers and no soft drinks on tap, we went for lunch but out of the 4 items on the menu only 2 (or 1, not sure) was available at mainstream prices. Staff were friendly and the fires ensured a "cosy" feeling (although it wasn't that cold outside). Not sure if there were any dogs in while I was there, but there was fresh dog excrement on the floor, if this sort of thing would disgust you I would give it a miss.

I think I first visited here nearly 40 years ago and apart from cleaning up some of the 70's décor it thankfully hasn't changed much. Basic, rough and ready dogs everywhere and fires in both rooms even in June. Very well kept beer from Abbeydale Brewery and the 8% Black Lurcher is named after the landlord's dog. If you want an exclusive table on your own. Go elsewhereIf you want to swill lager and put PSY on the jukebox. Go elsewhereIf you are Richard & Hyacinth Bucket looking for a false plasterboard "Olde English Inne". Go elsewhere.Oh and if you are allergic to, or have a dislike of dogs - don't even think about it!If, on the other hand, you want to drink good beer (you CAN have lager if they have it but it will be bottled and limited supply), are prepared to shuffle up to make room for fellow drinkers - and even better join in with conversation and banter with your fellow drinkers, and make a fuss of the multitude of dogs mostly of working breeds, then you will find that the ale goes down well and the evening passes all too quickly.I'm told the food is good - it certainly smells it. But I've never tried it as they seem to offer a vegetarian option but not vegan - which is a shame but not entirely unexpected - doesn't concern me as I just camp and cook a meal on the camp stove. If you take the pub as you find it, the pub will take you as it finds you - if you are aloof then the pub will be aloof with you. It's a philosophy that seems to work well in the 3 stags. But watch out for the Black Lurcher (a beer, not a dog) - its taste belies its strength - more than one and you may well end up in a tangle. So it's a good job that a similarly basic but friendly campsite is a mere 25 yards away.If you are staying in the adjecent campsite, the Yondermann cafe across the road is also great in the morning to serve up a cracking hangover cure breakfast

As has been said before, this is not a pub experience for all. If you'd like an effusive welcome, gastropub cuisine or immaculate scented loos, then give The Three Stags Heads a wide clearance. If you're after perfectly kept beer and a time travel journey back to the traditional pubs of the 50s, though, this one's for you. It's like walking into Withnail and I.The beers I tried were superb and, while the service wasn't exactly overdosed with jollity, it was definitely genuine. And, though the pub is nestled on a main road, the walks you can enjoy from the doorstep have to be some of the country's best.

If you like beer this is a pub not to be missed. Genuine traditional pub, warm fire and classic pub banter. Practical tasty food with no frills that compliments the beer well. An interesting range of cider and a few Belgian beers if you don't fancy real ale, but don't go there for anything fancy. Our favourite is to park up in Tideswell and walk across the dales and back about an hours stroll each way and makes the beer taste even better.

You have to be a certain character to appreciate this national treasure. If you're the sort who can't appreciate there being very few traditional travellers' inns left around the country which haven't been spoiled by Laura Ashley style refurbishments, TVs, free wi-fi and children running amok then, I suppose this place is not for you and you're best avoiding the place as you most certainly will be sniffed out as soon as you step through the door and will feel uncomfortable. For me, I love the place and wouldn't change it for the world. Situated on top of the moors, opposite a petrol station, whose aging signs suggest that it closed long ago when petrol was £1 per litre, this pub offers a glimpse into a long lost England. The front room is small and cosy with locals and landlord having their designated rocking chairs by the fireplace from which they read their newspapers and debate the world, only budge to replenish their pint pots. Whippets, Lurchers and other breeds of dogs are made welcome and hog the bare stone floor in front of the fire, which is always kept well stoked whatever the season. Drinks for the ladies are limited to wine (there's no G&T here!) but the beer, oh the beer is excellent, especially the Black Lurcher dark which is about 8%. The menu is simple and governed by what's been shot or caught locally, in fact I was drinking there once when a local game in with a brace of pheasant plus a few rabbit and exchanged them across the bar for a few pints of the good stuff. The food is homely and ample but don't expect silver service or trendy crockery, rather you'll be served up you dinner on home made pottery plates with knives and forks just like in Grandma's cutlery draw. I believe that you can camp here in summer and that there's some accommodation available upstairs but I've tried neither. If you get the gist of my review then you'll love it here and you'll put it on the list of pubs to go to before you die. If not, then just like the Hen weekend (????!!) its probably best you go to the Red Lion!!!!

Please take my review with no pinch of salt, no over-emotive clap-trap, no hidden agenda's, and no bias. This pub is without a doubt the single best pub in the UK. There. Job done. Except I'll explain. My partner had been here 15 years ago and by chance we happened to drive by it this Sunday; it's only ten miles from my house. You park across the road in a farmyard/scrapyard and walk across a busy road in the middle of nowhere. You struggle with a latched door, then proceed into a room which I can only describe as being from "american werewolf in London". It's old in there, and I mean REALLY old. The newest furniture in the place must be 150 years old. Old stone flag floor, quarry tiles in the other room, fires in each room. I made the mistake of ordering a lemonade and the barman just stood there and laughed. When my partner asked for a tomato juice he doubled up and asked if we were "taking the micky". They don't serve lager, I doubt they know what a spritzer is, and it's just the best feeling. The menu consists of a chalk board, which on this day had two choices - Salmon or Hare. She chose salmon and I chose hare. The barman isn't bothered about prices "Erm...call it £20 for cash" (ps it's ALL cash, no cards, but I suspect they'd take florins or guineas). We sat at our scrubbed table near an old range all warm from it's fire and were served our food in homemade (by the landlord) earthenware bowls. My hare was so gamey it was unreal. Just a wonderful flavour of the countryside...oh, and I now know what hares liver, kidneys, and, I suspect, heart taste like as they were all included in the dish! The salmon was good too. All with basic vegetables.Simply being in this pub is like being in it 200 years ago and I honestly doubt anything at all has changed in that time except the people (including the toilets). The food is what a hell of a lot of posh trendy city eateries attempt but can't match. It's honest, the game is more than likely caught by one of the number of lurchers which roam the place, it's as local and "back to your roots" as you could get. It all seems right.No-one in their right minds could create this place artificially, it has just evolved by forces unknown to the "Brewers Fayre", "Two eat for £10" brigade, or even Jamie Oliver and his "in the know, cutting edge of food fashion" ilk. Please don't go here if you like lager, clean floors, fried food, people calling you sir, sky tv, football, piped music, hen parties, stag parties (although I'd have mine here like a shot!), and food which should have shredded pea shoots on it.It's in several guide books and seems to be full of tourists and walkers. The owner looks like he belongs to the place. There can't be a pub like it in the UK.Please go there.

The terrible review below makes me laugh, why on earth you would go somewhere like Three Stags Heads on a hen weekend I've no idea. Anyway, this is a fantastic little pub. It has a great selection of ales and a limited but very tasty food menu. The barman was very friendly and let me try a few ales before buying one. Great place to go after a walk in the peak district, or like we did stop off on the way between Manchester and Nottingham. It's a step back in time but in an entirely good way, highly recommended.

We went there with our 3 kids a week ago. Their ales were the best we had on the whole trip. Though the food menu was small, they had a good range of choices and my 3 kids (age 3, 7, and 9) all enjoyed their food and ate as much as I had ever seen them eat. The pub has 2 rooms and the interior is a step back in time. It's popular with the locals and travellers who are told about it by the local inns. Pub owners are very proud of their ale and expect respectful behaviour from their patrons (there is a "Dogs Welcome, People Tolerated'' next to the bar, which we love). Though we had 3 young children, we were well taken care of and my kids were thoroughly entertained by the dogs that came to the pub with their ale loving owners. We're pleased that we got there on a day they're open. Would absolutely love to go back there one day.

Food is fantastic, staff are friendly but not very efficient, service is very slow. Staff putting cakes out when they could have been serving customers in the long queue.

WE WANT MANDY BACK! Mandy was coming in the truck for quite some time and built up a great rapport with the staff here, always had a great selection of food to choose from, since she has been moved off this stop, there doesn't ever seem to be cheese on toast! Mandy would go above and beyond to ensure if she didn't have it at breakfast stop she would bring it on the lunch stop! we miss you. keep being you and doing a great job!
