The Potting Shed Cafe in Derby

Loved this place, a little gem for me. Found this by accident, but what a gem.

I meet regularly at the potting shed with friends and family and I would just like to say how good this place is. The 'Gardeners' breakfast is second to none, with excellent produce, which is top quality and cooked to perfection. The staff are great and the atmosphere is always good.The cakes and drinks are also not to be missed.

A Lovely Hidden Gem – The Potting Shed Café, Derby I had a wonderful experience at The Potting Shed Café in Derby and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area. The location is charming, with beautiful views and a relaxing atmosphere that makes it perfect for a quiet bite or a catch-up with friends. Parking is conveniently available right outside the café, which made our visit even more hassle-free. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, all smiles and happy to help. Their warm service added to the overall comfort and pleasantness of the visit. We ordered a portion of chips, and I was pleasantly surprised — they were quite different from the usual style but absolutely delicious and full of flavour. I also had a cheese toastie based on the staff’s recommendation, and I’m glad I did. It came with a fresh side salad and a very tasty coleslaw. The only small downside was that I had asked for the cheese to be melted, but unfortunately, they couldn’t do that — my only suggestion for improvement. We also had drinks, and my flat white was exactly what I needed — smooth, rich, and well-made. We visited on a Saturday and stayed a bit longer than expected, forgetting they close at 3:30 PM. Despite that, the staff were incredibly kind and didn’t rush us out, allowing us to enjoy our chat peacefully. All in all, this café is a lovely spot with great food, friendly service, and a beautiful setting. I’ll definitely return if I’m ever in Derby again.

Lovely little cafe for a coffee and ciabatta. Service was quick. Nice to sit out in a relaxing environment and do some garden shopping! Highly recommend.

What a treasure of a find, Easter Sunday took a chance and it was open. Fantastic food, fantastic atmosphere, reasonably priced. Love it x

Excellent classic English breakfast. Perfect taste, quality ingredients, very kind and smiling service. As part of a flower and gardening shop, it's a brilliant solution. We left full and with a smile on our face

Delicious food and friendly atmosphere

Took my wife there for a chocolate and a spot of lunch. The food was excellent. Probably need to spend a bit more money on the garden centre side. But overall, nice hour spent there.

Food was delicious, and super quick service! The dog friendly area part of the cafe was so cosy and beautifully decorated. Had a very pleasant experience.

Popular cafe at the end of Markeaton Park, within the grounds of the garden centre. Regardless of being busy and being told food would be longer than usual, they were still super quick. Food was good and a reasonable price. There's a few tables to sit on outside. Staff was really polite, friendly and great service.

Called in this morning for a breakfast (1st time in a long time) we got a free table straight away 09.40am there was a few In already, I had the big breakfast & my wife the vegetarian & a pot of tea, everything was very nice, although my breakfast wasn't that large the quality of the food was very good & it was enough so I would say the price is ok & plenty of tea from the large teapot. Staff are all spot on, all in all a pleasant experience, 👍

Lovely place for brunch/lunch/tea. You can’t book in advance, but there’s usually always a table freeing up within a few minutes of arriving. Simple but delicious food - look out for the daily specials, they’re not to be missed! 👌

Delicious sandwiches with a side salad

We found this cafe whilst searching for breakfast near to Kedleston Hall. There is a good selection of choices, including 3 sizes of breakfast. The quality of the food was good and the service was quick and staff friendly. Would highly recommend. This is also attached to a little garden centre so an added bonus.

It was a nice experience to visit the plant side of the business...and we found the plant we were looking for..the breakfast is always a pleasure. And the coffee.

Coffee was the best. Lovely place but it was bit warmer inside.

If you go here on your own with a dog you cannot take them inside to get a menu or order. They expect you to tie your dog up outside right next to the dog area when anything can happen - as a dog owner I know this is irresponsible and I would still be liable!!! They did say they would come out to take order, but they cannot see you from where they work!!! The coffee was watered down and I asked for hot milk and got cold... The woman who told me dogs are not allowed inside came at me in a rude and aggressive manner... I just kept repeating that I was only ordering... The attitude of the staff is why I haven't visited this cafe for a while and won't be again!!

We regularly use The Potting Shed for breakfast as the food and service is always so good. I can highly recommend it.

Really disappointed today. We brought family for lunch. Sat outside luckily the weather was ok. Service terrible and when we asked for sauce was told to go and get it ourselves from inside. Not the service we expected

Always lovely to visit. Had a catch up with friends and there was no pressure to leave. The food was great and the coffee hot!

Staff friendly and efficient....

It was our first visit. We hadn't booked it was busy but they found us a table for 4. Staff were lovely. 3 of us had the pulled pork on brioche roll with chips salad and coleslaw. The other person had egg and chips the eggs were cooked to perfection. All the food was piping hot. Well presented and tasted good. Shall definitely visit again 😊

Lovely hidden gem in this part of Derbyshire. I had nice coffee after a park run nearby. The only vegan cake was also gluten-free.

Hidden gem (literally, as it is tucked away at the back of the garden centre so I couldn't find it at first!) Friendly staff, fresh food, relatively fast service considering how busy they were. I got there just after opening hours and they were packed which shows how popular they are.

Only had a drink which was nice but a bit disappointed that they couldn't spray and wipe the table before bringing us our drinks - I reckon a 10 second task!

Returning here after a fab experience I can't lie this one disappointed us. We only had bacon butties but there was definitely a cut back on the bacon - very slim offerings...come one guys. For something that's over £4 I'd expect at least 3 slices of bacon (which were very small!). We had more bread than bacon!!! Not great 😥

Always enjoy going to The Potting Shed, the staff are very friendly and there is a good choice of vegetarian food available, the veggie breakfast is particularly tasty! Being Lactose intolerant, it is one of the few places in Derby that I can find something interesting to eat and drink. It can get very busy at times so you can't always get a seat, but it's definitely worth the wait.

Great place to stop for a coffee and cake. Cakes are always delicious. Good choice of breakfast and lunch dishes too. We have always found the staff friendly and helpful.

A beautiful little place. Visited with my mum for lunch and was amazed at how nice it was. My mum had cranberry sauce in her panini and I had tuna melt and it was obvious they’d cut mine with the same knife as my mums as it had cranberry sauce where they’d cut it, luckily I’m not allergic to it, just don’t like it! The hand cooked chips were only just cooked, some were a little hard inside. Sadly we didn’t get to try the cakes and puddings as we were too full.

We were on our way for a walk through Markeaton Park and stopped off for a fabulous breakfast at The Potting Shed. Friendly service and Excellent value for money. As we had the dog with us we sat outside amongst the beautiful plants for sale. They also had another area dog friendly inside. Highly recommend.

Excellent cafe for lunch. Good sized portions. Reasonably priced. Well presented. Quick service. I have visited twice recently and both times been impressed.

Very lovely overall, but 1 star deducted - PLEASE BUTTER YOUR BREAD! It's cheap not doing this! It makes the sandwich/bread dry and the fillings fall out! Other than that, it was delicious!

Stopped in for breakfast with a friend before heading into Markeaton Park and was not disappointed at all. Had the vegetarian option and it was absolutely delicious. The food is really well cooked, the staff are really friendly and welcoming, and the atmosphere is fab!! Highly recommended!!

Super little traditional garden centre with a great selection of healthy looking plants. Didn't buy plants, but I will return when I need some. Went to the restaurant for a coffee and ham sandwich. Served on a rustic bloomer with crisps and coleslaw. Delicious. Great restaurant with dog friendly area inside special shed. Great to see these traditional garden centres still exist and thrive. Definitely worth a visit.

Ice coffee in the glorius sunshine. A quaint little coffee shop tucked away in the garden centre. Clearly a busy hot spot as tables inside full and lots of tasty food flowing. Service was fast and friendly. Dog friendly spot which was the main reason to drop in. We will happily return. Thank you

Really tasty fish finger sandwich for an impromptu lunch, good pot of tea and delicious coffee and walnut cake to follow. Friendly staff, dogs welcome, nice and spacious. Definitely would recommend.

Ella was amazing! All the staff were lovely but Ella was just fabulous she made us all a brilliant breakfast! It was a beautiful sunny day, great atmosphere and cannot fault the staff. Will be returning very soon. 5 star service Ella what a wonderful charming girl.

Great place for a full English. All quality ingredients. Even the sachets of brown and tomato sauces are upmarket Stokes. Nice garden center too. 10/10.

On a recommendation went today with a friend for afternoon tea and cake . Regretfully we were disappointed. The two slices of cake chosen were thin and in fact incomplete as a portion. The quality was good. Upon leaving we mentioned our disappointment about the cakes and when then asking if it was acceptable for a fellow customer to conduct a prolonged disturbing (to us ) telephone conversation in our ear shot , I was informed that they couldn’t do any about it as she was a customer!!!! After passing these comments I was approached by another member of staff who was asked if I wanted a refund ? I declined as we had enjoyed the small piece of cake that we did have. Other family members are regular supporters of the garden centre believing they offer great products at reasonable prices, regretfully on this occasion the Potting Shed let us down

Excellent food along with excellent service. Always good quality food and coffee choice. It is one of our ‘go to’ places for a coffee and chat.

Food is actually pretty good compared to other places in derby, its just a shame the overall service and standards are poor. The details matter.

Came as a pit stop during a long car journey after seeing good reviews and it did not disappoint. Friendly, lots of seating and great food at a reasonable price. The cakes looked fantastic too. Had a quick potter around the garden centre which was also lovely.

Cannot fault our experience today. We came to celebrate Mothering Sunday. There was 7 of us having lunch. Food was top quality and the staff could not do enough to make our visit special. I will happily recommend my friends to come here as well as visit myself when I’m the area.

Excellent cafe with brilliant food. The tomatoes are to die for! Prices are good and the atmosphere being a garden centre is pleasant. One of the best places to sit outside on a sunny day. (Also very dog friendly)

A great little cafe on the Markeaton garden centre site. Main cafe, dog friendly area and outside too in the summer. We nornally end up with the All day breakfasts or one of the lovely cakes ... but the is a large selection of realy nice food here .. all the normal coffee, teas andsoft drinks. Look out for the special evening events. Just outside the park so ideally located for a half was stop while having a walk.

Went for lunch yesterday about 2.30pm, waited ages for a table (they were very busy) but thought it worth the wait as we had eaten here before and enjoyed it. Sat down decided what we wanted and stood in queue to order, only to be told when we eventually got to the till that because they had been busy they were no longer serving food! 😫Wouldn't it have been a GOOD Idea to put a notice on the door or have a member of staff alerting waiting customers that this was the case so that they could make an educated choice of whether to go elsewhere??? Very hungry disappointed customers, won't risk coming there again in a hurry, sorry😢

I have been here for breakfasts and coffee and cakes before and always found the food and atmosphere to be good. Today we had ciabatta and chips and were very disappointed. The ciabatta were ok but the chips were really quite unpleasant. They looked good, with a hand-cut appearance, however they were really soggy and tasted nasty and sweet. The sweetness may have been due to the variety of potato, the soggy / undercooked taste….perhaps they aren’t freshly cooked but are kept warm? I never usually leave any food when eating out, but I couldn’t eat more than a couple of these, my companion also disliked the chips. I noticed that another customer had left their chips too, so maybe others were of the same opinion. I’ll just stick to coffee if I come again.

I purchased a Christmas tree from here 4 weeks ago and to this day, it is beautiful I've not watered it and it hasn't dropped any pines. It wasnt mega expensive.I'd recommend you to buy one from here next year,I will be.

I was a little apprehensive taking into account some of the recent reviews but no complaints. Tables were clean, food good, and the service was very good. Would rate it good overall but only average or very good as options and did not feel average was fair.

Visited Potting Shed today. Had the usual poached eggs on toast. When it came, the toast had no butter. No problem, i went to ask for some to be greeted with a very rude girl who argued that there was butter on the toast, when I suggested she looked she called me a silly woman and threw me some butter packs. "Fine take some" All she had to say was sorry, I was not complaining just asking for butter! Not going back!

This place has definitely gone downhill since our last visit. The level of service and cleanliness has dropped significantly. Filthy tables hap hazard service coupled with poor-quality sickly-sweet cakes (they used to be home made and tasty. I am afraid it is off our list for future visits to Derby.

My wife and I have been eating out locally a lot recently due to having a new kitchen installed. Whilst none of the places have disappointed in the least, our visit to The Potting Shed was the most enjoyable. The external setting, the interior ambiance, the delightful staff and the deliciously fresh, home-cooked food all combined to make our visit relaxing and deeply satisfying. We look forward to regular visits to The Potting Shed, even after our kitchen is back in action!

Can't fault it. Everything I've ordered over the few times I've visited has been spot on and all of the staff are super friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend the breakfasts, ciabattas and the fish platter is wonderful too. I've breastfed there and felt totally comfortable...

Great place to meet a friend for lunch and sit inside or out. Parking available (serves both the garden centre & cafe). No need to book for Friday lunch for two. Order at counter, food and drinks delivered to the table. We both had the...

A nice placed to have a bite to eat. Only my second ot third visit, and went for a full English breakfast, coffee and a smoothie Food was very good, served piping hot. Loses a star on this visit due to the fried egg being nearly hard boiled, the toast bread felt a bit old and stale and the jam a bit bland tasting. Nit picking a bit here though….. We enjoyed our visit and will return.
