Nice food but the starter came with the main course this might be because the lad behind the bar was too preoccupied with talking to the locals in the bar rather than concentrating on taking the order, seemed very busy with diners and drinkers

Awkward bar tiny no where to stand, hot from a long walk but to be charged £16,50 for one pint of beer and 3 cokes is a joke. Didn’t see the amount when taping to pay. Shocked to see that. Only way to work it out is £5 for a glass of coke?!?! While in the garden listening to screaming kids and whining dogs on a rock hard bench. Won’t be back. Spoke to a friend who lives local she said yeh that’s the reason we don’t go there anymore. Seriously no need to charge that - pure greed.

This review is a big climb down from my previous one. Impressive food, though very limited choice for vegetarians and vegans. This pub is a lovely building, backing into the Great Ouse. It has all of the ingredients for a great atmosphere, but sadly the greeting and table service was dire, and some of the staff came over as rude. There was a long wait between first and second courses. As we weren't planning an overnight stay we skipped the desert. The coffee was served lukewarm.

Stopped off by chance for lunch. Really friendly welcome as we ordered our drinks and lunch at the bar. We chose a chicken and ham sandwich and a roast beef sandwich. They came on a fresh baked brown baguette. The beef was lovely and tender with generous thick slices. The chicken and ham were also large pieces. Would highly recommend a visit to this country pub.

Called in here after a nice walk. The pub was recommended by a lady who worked locally. We were not disappointed. We had a couple of drinks & lunch. My husband had a steak baguette and I had the ham & cheese ploughman's. I've rated the ploughman's as my 2nd best ever. It was amazing. Beautiful ham & A large sized wedge of cheese. Enough salad but a bit overboard with pickles. I had to leave quite a lot of those, however, it was amazing. Well done to all the staff there who were working really hard that day as it was really busy x

We were staying at the nearby National Trust campsite and this pub was recommended. This is a dog friendly pub and bar area restaurant and as we entered we were warmly greeted and offered to choose a table. We ordered drinks and looked over the menu. Once decided popped to the bar to order the food. The bar area had a lovely feel to it. The food arrived and it looked delicious and tasted fantastic. The Steak and Ale pie was filled with steak and a lovely gravy, then veg was cooked as I like it and the chips were nice and crispy. The portions were quite large and we regretted ordering Halloumi fires and Onion rings as a starter. Would definitely go back if we were in the area. Bear in mind they stop serving food at 8pm (at least on the Monday evening we were there in May 2024).

We booked our table on the Three Jolly Butchers website for 12.15 pm Sunday 26th May 2024. We walked into the restaurant and we saw a couple walk in off the street in front of us welcomed and given a table for two. Then we were asked if we had booked, we said yes but the waitress went offf to consult with "Tom". She came back looking confused and asked us our name. The waitress said "Lucy" yes we said. Tom now arrived from the bar and asked if we had booked on the website, we again replied yes. Tom said "well I dont know why it let you". There was no appology from Tom, in my opinion Tom likes to argue rather than see the bigger picture that is going on around him. We were ushered to the bar so that a table by the window in the corridoor could be made up. Before we went to the bar I heard Tom telling a waitress to make sure that no tables in the restaurant were left without a chair. Worried by this I picked up a chair and placed it at our table before we left for the bar. Anyway, our food when it came was good. When we finished our dinner, Tom asked how our dinner was. I replied "our food was good, but thats it". Tome then enquired what was wrong, I said " we did not appreciate seeing a walk in given the table we had booked". Tom wanted to argue his position, he said thats why he had appologised. Idid not hear any appology from Tom. This argument took place in front of the table of 6 next door to us. It further spoiled our occasion and we left our drinks on the table paid and left. This young man Tom is argumentative by nature, he thinks an explanation of his system is an appology when it is not. This argumentative attitude adopted by Tom will damage the Three Jolly Butchers reputation. I told him that his problems with bookings are not our problem. Never again. DG

I have been to this pub a number of times in the past and always found the food good even if the service is a bit slow. Today we took friends there for Sunday lunch which we had booked for 1pm. The waitress set us at our table and took our drinks order. A couple of minutes later she returned with the drinks and took our food order. There was one other couple in the restaurant. After 35-40 mins there was no sign of food and nobody had offered any explanation. Eventually I went to a member of staff who went to the kitchen to find out if and when the food was coming. She returned to tell us that they were busy in the garden and our food would be another 10/15 mins. I know that when we had arrived it hadn’t been that busy in the garden but had become so while we were sitting in the restaurant. It appeared to us that we were being overlooked in favour of those seated outside. Eventually the food arrived almost an hour after ordering. I feel that had we been told of the delay at the outset we could have accepted it more readily. I was left angry and embarrassed in front of my friends. This could have been avoided if there had been a little communication in the first place. Sadly none was forthcoming

The weather wasn't warm enough to sit outside in the lovely garden but we chose a nice round table in the oldy worldy part of the bar area for our overseas friends who were suitably impressed. The lunch was excellent and the staff really friendly and helpful. The rib of lamb was large and tasty with lots of fresh veg. The smoked haddock and leek risotto filling and flavoursome. I had a huge jacket potato with loads of spicy chilli and cheese. It's a great pub with plenty of choice for all tastes and budgets situated in a beautiful village.

I popped in to do a quick recce for my elderly mum who is looking to move nearby. Before I bought a drink, Shaun and Hillary offered their beers for me to taste. I went outside for a cigar accompanied by Shaun who offered me one of his. Victoria knew neither of us but asked if either of us had a cigarette. Another cigarillo from Shaun. Victoria was lovely in both her outlook on life and advice about the village.Houghton is a real community and everyone is proud of the village, the pub, and want to include people. I had to go, I'd only popped in for a quick pint and investigation. It was hard leaving, took 15mins - and I regretted having to leave. Beer was good, people fantastic. It's what a welcoming local should be. Thanks guys, it made my mind up for my mum.

Had lunch here on Aug bank holiday Monday and arrived as they opened so could order food before it got busy. Our order which we had to chase up took nearly 1.5 hours! Others around us longer and eventually we learnt they had stopped serving food. Food was fine when it arrived although £14.85 for 3 sausages, mash, & gravy overpriced particularly as no veg incl. waiting staff were very good considering the obvious complaints they were receiving but bar staff less than friendly and clearly weren’t looking to strike any rapport with customers. Despite this would return for drinks only as reasonable choice of draft ales and garden pleasant when weather permits.

Came today with family. Totally appreciated that it was a bank holiday but was around 1hr 20 when we finally got our meals which was pretty ridiculous. What annoyed me more was that we asked if there was anyway we could get the fried egg so that the yolk and white had been whisked together before frying for the children’s menu as my sons love eggs but usually not the white and yolk separately. We were told basically where to go with that request! I could understand if it was an adult requesting it but for a child’s request; it wouldn’t have taken much to do this. Ploughman’s was pretty poor for the price too. Have had nicer ones elsewhere; especially for the price.

Booked this pub for thursday evening for my.husband and I. On arrival I noticed a table laid up for 14 people. We went to the bar, ordered a beer and was showed to a table. We immediately ordered hoping to beat the large party. 50 minutes later, after the large party had been served (they had obviously pre-ordered), the waitress told us they had run out of new potatoes (which I had ordered). We ended up paying for our beer and leaving without food as the waitress could not say how much longer we would have to wait. We have had several nice meals in this pub in the past and the staff are very polite but the service was appalling.

Sunday lunch was poor. Roast beef over cooked and tough as a result. Gravy looked and tasted like a packet mix such as bisto rather than a home made stock. Roasties only half roasted. “Seasonal” veg was more suited to winter ie cabbage and celeriac. No fresh herbs. Kids goujons not fresh and we suspect a bought in frozen product. The chicken was small diced chicken in the wrap, looked like a bought in frozen product too. After several attempts we are going to give up on the food. Fine for drinks and always good service but crying out for a new talented chef from a decent hotel or restaurant.

When my husband sadly died in late August, there was no need for discussion as to where to hold the Wake ……. obviously it was going to be The Jolly Sailor, Ramsey, David’s preferred drinking place for over 40 years. In his latter years he was even afforded his own seat next to the bar. If someone was in it when he arrived, they were politely requested to move. Stacey, the new Landlady, very thoughtfully placed a photograph of David, together with his pipe and cap, on the seat for the duration of the Wake. Stacey was most helpful and accommodating and arranged a Wake far and beyond my hopes and expectations. On arrival there was a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the food and presentation was exceptional - the quality, variety and amount. Many complimentary comments were made. She, and her wonderful staff kept the table topped up and glasses full unobtrusively and efficiently. In fact they were firstclass throughout. I would wholeheartedly and without reservation recommend this lovely, atmospheric, friendly and welcoming establishment to anyone looking for a venue in which to hold their event. You would have to go a long way to better it.
