We enjoyed a lovely lunch here, sitting outside on the terrace with a superb view over the valley. The barman went the extra mile, so friendly and thoughtful and even giving us little chocolate bars with our post-lunch coffees 🤗. Fish and chips and veggie roast were well cooked, plentiful and tasty. We will be back!

Excellent hospitality and a very warm welcome is what you get every time you visit this delightful pub. The food is tasty, beautifully presented and very reasonably priced. There's a terrific outside terraced area which has breathtaking views and the bar area is immaculate and cosy. Very highly recommended as it's an all-round winner.

First stayed in this pub four years ago and loved it. Came back this weekend to find a new family running it but that little else had changed; which is a thoroughly good thing, in my opinion. It's not pretentious: it's a real community pub well-used by the locals (and their dogs and their kids - signs of a great pub in my book) but which also welcomes travellers and makes them feel at home. Comfortable beds in cozy rooms, simple but well-cooked food from a menu on which most people should find something to please them, well-kept local beer and a decent wine selection. Oh and a really good breakfast in the morning. To top this off, really friendly welcome from the "new" (they've been there over 18 months now) tenants who couldn't do enough to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Recommended - we'll certainly be back.

Stayed over for Dinner, bed and breakfast. We visited here about 20 years ago and decided to revisit because we were in the South West (we live in Yorkshire). Warm welcome from the landlord who has had it for about a year now. The level of customer service is excellent and the landlady and landlord are really friendly. Food was great-they use local produce and it shows. I had a fantastic sirloin cooked to perfection. Took advantage of the Palmers beer from Bridport. Powerstock is a small village that is out of the way so nice and quiet. Recommend a visit and am sure we will be back

We want to say a huge thank you Martin and Agi for our stay for the weekend in September. When we arrived we had a warm welcome and given the most amazing room which was huge and had everything that we needed. We were there with our dog who was fussed by all the locals. We ate at the pub both nights as the food was absolutely brilliant- well done Agi. We had some wonderful walks in the area and very dog friendly. Martin looked after us in the evening and loved the Italian white wine, can't recall the name. We will definitely be booking again for another weekend before Christmas if you hopefully have space

From the first moment I saw this place, we fell in love with this place, the village the pub, the locals, the ale, just everything. The owners Martin and agnes made us feel relaxed , part of the local gang, and their hospitality and kindness was surreal, agnes has to be one of the best cooks too, she excelled at everything we had. The setting was to die for, the pub is located in a quiet sleepy thatched village with hardly any passing traffic, the only noise comes from everyone chatting on the terrace overlooking the gorgeous Dorset Hills. So much history is surrounded here too. A lot of it dates back to the domesday book. All local produce was used for our food which made it feel great . Our room was large with doors with amazing views, huge extra comfy bed, and leather settee to nestle into watching TV late at night. I haven't nothing negative to say at all. In fact we even looked to see if anywhere was for sale it was that perfect. Palmers brewery are lucky to have Martin and agnes they are a great Couple who have big hearts. We wish them all the best and hope to see them again.

We had a great stay at The Three Horseshoes (June 2021). The hosts were very welcoming, including welcoming our 8 month old puppy (who was well behaved on her first trip away from home - didn’t disturb other customers). We had a comfortable room with lovely views of the countryside and delicious food at breakfast and dinner. The Inn is just a few miles from the coast, so we made the most of the local beaches and coastal walks as well as the countryside. We would stay there again. Thank you Martin and Aggie.

My husband & I, plus our 2 dogs stayed twice during the pandemic. Martin, the landlord is very helpful giving excellent information and nothing is too much to ask. He also has a great sense of humour. The local area is incredibly scenic. Agnes a great cook takes pride in her breakfasts lunches and dinners. Delicious. We ate our way through the dinner menu and breakfast menu. Very friendly locals pleased to welcome visitors. Jodie, the local beauty, serves behind the bar and at tables and is a real treat to behold. We had two great stays for several days in their very comfortable accommodation - highly recommended. We have visited the Three Horseshoes every few years over the course of the last three decades and each time it has changed ownership since the last visit. A lot, however, doesn't change including the bucolic deepest Dorset location found down some 'hair raising' single track roads and the warm welcome which is always on offer. The current landlords - Martin and Agnes - have been there for a couple of years I believe and are rumoured to be signing up for another three. We found the welcome to be very warm, Covid compliance excellent, the room spacious and the food and Palmers beer superb. For dinner, highlights were Hungarian meatballs and the hake, both of which were very tasty and one of the best cheeseboards I have had in a long time. After a good nights sleep, the cooked breakfast the next morning freshly made to order and lovely. One very minor quibble is that it can be almost too quiet in the bar, so a little background music wouldn't go amiss!

For those who know the area, this part of West Dorset is extra special. There is so much to do. For a base for a short stay, we would recommend the Horseshoes over its peers. We returned here after a successful visit over thirty years ago. We weren't disappointed. We met a couple of friends here for lunch; we were fortunate enough to have a table on the terrace which overlooked the pretty little village of Powerstock. Delightful views as was the service and the food. The landlord was very caring and welcoming, and I found the pub very honest and not ostentatious in any way. The ale was fabulous and the food was basic but creative, and well presented. I can honestly say that our experience here was memorable for the right reasons! And we will return hopefully not in thirty years.

3 of us stopped here for a Saturday lunch as the sun was out. I have been here to eat on three other occasions and this reviews reflects each visit. Great location especially when warm enough to sit outside with a superb view, lovely village setting, the beer is kept in tip top condition (the best pint of Dorset Gold I’ve had post lockdown), Martin is the perfect landlord, barman and waiter, he is friendly helpful, knowledgeable and accommodating, the food is fresh, well cooked and portions are good. I have had fish eat visit and it has been excellent, each dish has its own twist such as the crushed peas cooked down in butter and enhancing the tartare sauce all with capers which really lifts everything. The chips are the best I’ve had outside of Greece and go perfectly the the mussels which are also sweet and fresh. All in all I could not think of any way in which our visit could have been improved. If your idea of the perfect country pub is a row of men sitting at the bar with their loyal dog sitting at their feet while the owners enjoy a pint and a chat then you have it right here at The Three Horseshoes. If you ever wondered how you could improve on that quintessential English setting then you can. Because here you can eat first class food that is all cooked from scratch in house as opposed to reheated (having been made commercially elsewhere)The landlord, called Martin, has a light touch and is extremely accomodating. However you cut it, this place is authentic, great and a taste of real England.GO !

Stayed here for only one night but really impressed with.... well.... everything. Of course it depends on your taste but this is a beautifully situated, individual, village inn set in stunning countryside. The hosts are friendly and attentive; the accommodation is comfortable and well set up; the menu is small but varied and what we had to eat was delicious and well-made. The wines and beers are - again - limited but excellently chosen and well-kept. The atmosphere in the bar was lively and a good mix of guests, passers-by and locals. Called in for an impromptu meal on a Saturday evening. Noiticed that food is only served up until 8.30pm, and strangely for a Saturday, one of the dining areas was in complete darkness and the door closed on it. The menu is as locally sourced as possible, freshly cooked, varied and delicious.Tracy and the staff are personable, well informed and passionate about what they do. And they do it well. Go visit. It's a beautiful gem, in the country, with good food, good ale, good wine and it's run by good people.

Stayed here for two nights in early June and was looked so very well by Tracey & Ami at this lovely country Inn, beautiful views at the rear in this pretty village in Dorset.Ami does a fantastic job with the food with some lovely variations and flavours out of this world, Tracey takes the time to speak to all of the guests and will happily explain what is in these great dishes served by the lovely Jess (think that was the name) who is equally very friendly and nothing is to much trouble. If you want a peaceful stay in a great inn with quality food then I would certainly recommend the Horseshoes.Well done to Tracey,Ami & Jess for a lovely stay 10/10Gary & Wendy

I camped nearby and walked to this pub on a recommendation to find great food and good local company. Also lunched here the next day and enjoyed the excellent scotch egg!A great base for local walking or just a bite to eat. The beer is most excellent also (Palmers ale). Lovely on a summers day when you can sit outside and enjoy the view over the village.

New owners, in for only eighteen weeks when we visited. Homemade chowder was fresh and well balanced. Trout was good enough for us to book in for a second time there and then.Second visit showed that they can back up. Atlantic Charr was wonderful, and the kids enjoyed their muscles for a second time. We're just about to order pudding...

Three Horseshoes Inn, Powerstock is ideally placed for visiting many places in this beautiful part of Dorset. This was our first stay in this accommodation and it will not be the last. The owners Tracy and Aimee are the perfect hosts with a great attitude to their customers. We are vegetarians and we went there with our dog Misty and felt no awkwardness, we were all made very welcome. Staying for seven nights B&B we had meals each night in the pub. The rooms are a very good size with comfortable beds and windows to a perfect countryside view.Breakfasts were tasty and filling as were the evening meals excellent vegetarian dishes, with choices which isn't usual for us as veggies. It was all very yummy.

We had two delicious meals at the Three Horseshoes during our recent stay in Dorset. The burger was particularly excellent (one of the best I've had!). Would definitely recommend. Will be back to try the monster Scotch eggs!

First visit to the area and the pub and we loved it! The pub is under new ownership and they've already got the set up right. Great beer and delicious home cooked food. What more do you need?! Highly recommended.

The Three Horseshoes, Powerstock, can be found along narrow winding lanes, little gem right in the country. We stayed here for six nights with our two Border Collies and loved it. Amy and Tracey made us very welcome, it was like home from home. Nothing was too much trouble. There is no set time for breakfast, which meant we could eat at nine, and not rush. The superb reakfast was cooked to perfection, with proper toast, made when we wanted it, after our cooked breakfast. Big teapot, that actually poured without dripping! We ate here every night, except Monday, when the pub is closed for what they say is ‘catching up and ordering.’ Amy is a great cook, and all the food was excellent, and always served with a smile and chat from Jess, the lass from down under! Tracy kept a good bar, and was very knowledgeable in the wine department. There is also non-alcoholic beer for the dogs!Accommodation is in the annexe of just two rooms. Room 2 is the larger of the two, with a very comfy king size bed, sofa and large shower room. Hospitality tray was good, with a fresh supply of biscuits every day, and bottled water from their own spring! There was even a jar of treats for the dogs. Amy and Tracy also supplied two water bowls, and three blankets for the dogs, even though we had brought our own crate and beds. On our leaving day we weren’t rushed out of our room unlike other places. Breakfast was leisurely, unfortunately no black pudding as it hadn’t been delivered before nine, but when we went to settle the bill, Amy had wrapped up a small piece of black pudding for us to take home – a lovely touch, and much appreciated. Stay on a quiz night, it’s great fun and what you might call ‘different’ prizes! Much to our astonishment, Amy produced garlic breads and potatoes in the interval, which went down a treat.Thoroughly recommended, and we would definitely stay here again.

Just popped into The Shoes for a quick drink today while on a walk in the Spring sunshine around Powerstock Common and ended up staying for Sunday lunch, which was preceded by the most amazing Scotch Egg ever. We live some 8 miles or so away and used to come here in the past but not for a couple of years after it changed hands. The location of the pub is second to none and the countryside around will not have changed too much since Hardy was writing. The welcome from Tracey and the team could not have been better and it is just what a pub like this needs – along with great food and real ale of course. The Shoes is a ‘destination pub’ that is more than well worth the visit once again. Our visit today made Sunday spectacular. Thank you.

Always been a massive fan of the Three Horseshoes and been going with my parents since I was 10. Now as the proud owner of three of my own children, it was the perfect Sunday Lunch to enjoy Mother's Day. Under new management, it is thriving. Delicious food, good range of local beers, excellent wine by the glass. Dog friendly, kid friendly and utterly charming staff. Both Dorset locals and a particularly helpful and delightful member of staff from 'down under'. 5 stars all the way....

Called at 12:00 to book a table for 5 at 1PM. Very friendly tone, given choice of table on arrival, very enthusiastic about having invested in the pub, using local produce and employing people from the region. Very appreciative of how beautiful the region is. We had faggots, a bean stew, a Shepard's pie and a burger. All was freshly prepared and delicious. Service is very friendly and professional. Highly recommend it.

Came down off Eggardon Hill, stopped here for lunch. A traditional Palmers house as regards decor, but a warm welcome persuaded us to polish off their Dorset Poll shepherds pie, followed by warm Bakewell tart straight out of the oven. We could have had an interesting range of ice creams? There isn't a full range of draught beers yet, but new management has only been in for a few weeks. Prices are fair, not cheap. They also do open ciabattas and a takeaway service.

We called by yesterday having not visited the pub for several years. We were given a very warm welcome by new landlady Tracey and our dog was brought a bowl of water and a biscuit. The menu was good honest pub grub but with a modern twist and focussing on local sourcing as is often the case with Dorset pubs. The portions were generous and all was delicious. We ordered Homemade glazed Ham, Local Eggs, hand cut Chips and Piccalilli and Braised beef Cottage Pie with Blue Vinny mash and winter veg - great value at £24.00. We caught a glimpse of the "shoes" i.e. ciabatta with toppings and they looked well worth consideration next time round as did the puds which, alas we had no room for on this occasion. The log burner was well received on such a cold day and we caught some great views on the way in and out which should be taken in on foot.

Me and Becky stayed here last night whilst visiting our friends and it was a great decision. The room was spacious, clean and fully equipped. The bed was large and comfortable, the bathroom was very spacious with an extremely large shower. The room had a comfy sofa and the most picturesque views of the Dorset countryside. The landlord and lady were both very friendly and accommodating. The breakfast utilised locally sourced ingredients and was tasty however it was all cooked in the same pan so the tomato seemed to catch on the bottom of our egg. The Dorset muesli was gorgeous and the orange juice seemed freshly squeezed. Will definitely return.

We rang the pub before arriving as we were worried that it was the kind of place that could get booked up but the owner assured that there would be a table for us at Friday lunchtime. When we did arrive, we were greeted in a friendly way by the pub owners and found a table for five. The weather was not great so we ate inside -- the door was open so that we got a glimpse of the beautiful view outside. The owners were really accommodating about the different tastes and needs of our kids - two teenage girls and a young boy - and gave us some good advice about what to order. The girls loved their lemon sole with tarragon butter and my fish and chips was by far the best I had eaten in Dorset. The ham and chips and venison sausages with braised red cabbage were also excellent. The Lemon sole and sausage dishes were accompanied by some delicious creamed potatoes. The cooking was not fancy but nor was it plain - it was simple and tasted good. This was the one pub lunch of our holiday and it was perfect. Thanks!

Every month, John and Vicky at the Three Horseshoes host a 'foreign' dinner. We have been to several and all have been good. The most recent was an excellent Indonesian meal. We took friends who know that part of the world and they were similarly impressed. Keep an eye open for the next one! John has cooked his way around the world and this shows in the imaginative dishes presented at reasonable prices.

Ordered the ribeye steak @ £18.50 - it came with one small rosti potato and a small amount of green beans. The rosti was part covered by the steak thus making it soggy with the steak sauce. Asked for another rosti - was told it would be another £2.50 then it came coated in sea salt! ! Hold the salt!!! Actually the whole meal was too salty !!!

We booked a table at the Three Horseshoes for our family of six with two children on a Friday evening and we were delighted. The hilltop village of Powerstock in West Dorset is very pretty nestling high up on a hillside with the pub garden facing south west. There was no children's menu but the chef was happy to cook sausages, chips and beans for the boys whilst we ordered the superb soufflé and fresh sardines to start and beef curry, muscles in white wine and cream and fish and chips for our mains. All the food came out on time and was hot and delicious. Thoroughly recommended.

It's has changed in some ways but not others. Accommodation is now in two recently refurbished large rooms - more suites really - in a single storey wing. The first floor rooms we stayed in long ago are now family accommodation for the owners. The public rooms feel unchanged an unspoiled, lined with old pine panelling on walls and ceilings. Some might say it's showing its age, I'd say it retains its character. We were there on a quiet pre-Easter Sunday night, following a very dank and chilly day, so the lack of visitors in this very small out of the way hamlet was no great surprise. That did mean we had the almost uninterrupted (but not intrusive) attention of the Australian husband and wife team who now own the pub, having come to the UK from working in France in the last year or so.Their experience in the French hotel trade clearly showed in the excellent food that included some wonderful provincial dishes and a short but well chosen wine list. My starter of Dorset snails in red wine sauce was nothing short of sensational, and my main course of hake with white beans felt very French too. My wife's fillet steak was perfectly and properly rare - as it would be in France - and so possibly rarer then many in this country might expect. She loved it. Breakfast was equally good. The slow trade at this time of year was apparent in the single real ale available (there were 3 handpumps) but the Palmers ale was in good condition. The only other minor point was lack of wifi in the rooms. The evening before we had dined at Restaurant Nathan Outlaw in Port Isaac, which has 2 Michelin stars. That was a truly memorable and fantastic eating experience, but I did genuinely feel the meal at the Three Horseshoes was every bit as good in its own much less ambitious way.

great swift service and friendly welcome - however hugely disappointed with the meal - we went for butternut squash soup expecting it to be thick and wholesome but it was very watery - 3 of us had soup and bread for all of 3 us came on one plate - it didnt seem enough for 3 so we asked for more only to be charged an extra £2 - the fourth in our party had a ploughmans, not great on the presentation stakes! sorry to be negative but was rather disappointed - but plus... the cider was good

A damp misty day after they had been open late the night before meant the pub was almost too quiet! The beer was good and although not much choice of food we found dishes we enjoyed. The salmon was very well received and the spinach cannelloni tasted good. Service was very slow and we waited for along time to get our food. Maybe just unlucky

Firstly, the pub was pretty empty, but this may have been due to the very bad weather, so ambience and atmosphere didn't stand a chance although the waitress did her best!Food original, fresh and very well cooked - some of the best this reviewer has had; if you're in the area, don't miss it.

We enjoyed our meal (cooked well) and the beer and the place. This is deepest darkest Dorset and not somewhere you pass by accident, so there were few people in for the lunchtime we were there but it deserves better. Maybe in the evening.

Upon a friends recommendation we went for Sunday lunch. It is a busy but friendly pub in a quaint village. Had a nice wine list, and the roast beef was delicious as was the fish. Dessert was Sticky Toffee Pudding - an English tradition and it was a perfect end to a very nice meal. The waitstaff were friendly and efficient.

Sunday lunch was not very good. Waiter ate food and drank at the bar constantly. Emptied bins and didn't wash his hands. Chef sat at the bar in between orders. Food arrived and was tasteless, meat tough and when asked for cranberry sauce the waiter arrived with a plastic tub to serve it!

A small hidden Cafe hidden down a side alleyway, delivers a big smile through it's food and warm welcoming hosts. They make delicious salads, homemade crustless quiche, large saucer style macaroons, homemade sausage rolls and vege rolls. It's the only place in Dorchester that i feel the food is good for you, cooked on the spot there that day, great coffee and choice of tea's etc. Seating is limited and very sadly due to it's size of premises maybe closed due to Covid, please double check. They have worked so hard and deserve all our support
