Three Horse Shoes in County Durham

First time there. Went for Sunday lunch with family. A good selection of meat but the beef was especially delicious, very large portions. Plenty of veg, roast potatoes were really good. We asked for more gravy and the staff were happy to oblige. All in all a lovely meal.

Based on some of the other reviews I read, I was not expecting great food, but both the quality of food and service were very good. I had beef and ale pie, which was very tasty with a good quantity of beef and excellent short crust pastry (clearly home made) and my wife had the seafood linguine special, which she said was very really good. Both dishes were a good size. The waiting staff were very helpful and attentive.

Random find, we were coming back from Durham after an errand, looking for somewhere to eat. Came across the Three Horseshoes and thought, give it a go. Two excellent steak and kidney puddings, reasonable wine and a nice pint. Very happy.

Haven't been for a couple of years it definitely didn't disappoint. I have food allergies and the staff and chef couldn't have been nicer. We went for Sunday lunch. I highly recommend this place. I will definitely be returning with my family. 😁

Lovely meal all the family enjoyed meal in fact best meal we have had out for a long time. It was a calm relaxing manner the waiter was smart and very polite. Would we go back definitely yes in fact we planning our next meal there that’s how nice it was.

Fab food, lovely cocktails and great service

Stopped here for 1 night in our Motorhome during our tour around Northumberland. The food and service were amazing with the best homemade steak and kidney pudding I have had in a long, long time. Absolutely packed with meat and gravy and the veggies were fresh without being overcooked. The staff were chatty, friendly, and genuinely seemed pleased to serve you. Thank you for a lovely stop over.

Went for Lunch it was lovely I had Fajita Wrap which came on sizzling plate you had to make them yourself but was lovely. Pricey on the bigger menu although there is a cheaper one.

The location is on a busy road in the country but the rooms were very quiet. The location is convenient for visiting the city of Durham. The meal we had there was very tasty (Thai Green Chicken and Rice), prices reasonable and our room was very clean, tidy and well presented with a nice en-suite shower. Breakfast was included and again very high quality.

We were a party of 5 for a family event. The staff were friendly and helpful and the service was really good. This was a prelude to the good we were going to eat. We all had different starters and meals from goats cheese, fish to a beef Wellington and every meal was excellent. We would highly reccomend this o anyone considering acting here.

We visited for the first time after the cinema in Durham. It's only about 10 minutes drive from the city. Food served until 9pm, we arrived about 8.30pm and wasn't a problem to be seated. Service was prompt for drinks at the table, food order and food was quite quick to arrive also. Food was all home cooked and the portion sizes very good also. The braised beef just fell apart, so smooth and no fat to chew. We will be returning.

Had tea here with friends.I had a caesar salad which was delicious! Large portion, plenty of chicken and I liked that the dressing was separate so people can choose how much or little they want. First time here & will definitely return. The staff were friendly & the food was served quickly. Highly recommend.

Enjoyed a few pints here recently - got a good selection of beers and ales. Found a red ale on draught called Good Chemistry, nice pint. Fish and chips were very good and completely filled me up for the rest of the day 😲 Probably fair to say that location wise, you'd have to drink non-alcoholic beverages as it seems a little out of the way. Welcome and hospitality was very good 👍🏻

Came for my sons 18th birthday meal and it was lovely greate service.

I have dined here on a number of occasions over the years with work, friends and with family, but after today's experience, we will not be returning. And would discourage others from dining here too. We were sat next to two large reserved tables, they arrived shortly after us. It was a party of 16+ children. They were a very large group who were shouting over eachother, to the point we couldn't hold a conversation due to the level of noise. We requested to move on three different occasions, after we finished our food as fast as possible, I said I would like to order deserts but not sat here, two different members of staff said they'd sort it. After 25 minutes a quite rude man came over to the table and said there was no more tables. I said we would be leaving then. We hadn't finished our drinks, ate our food as quickly as possible just so we could leave because of how loud the other tables were. We weren't the only people unhappy and none of the staff had even politely asked them to keep the noise down. They were walking around, playing games with kids, yelling at eachother and going in and out of the back door next to us, which we had been tokd we could not to use. I said I wouldn't be happy paying the full price as the experience was dreadful (ironically he asked me to repeat on multiple occassions because he couldn't hear me over the noise) he proceeded to tell me that it was busy and they had kids and it was a bank holiday, no budging on table, price or even talking to the other party. The other side of the pub was like a different place. The people sat next to us were very loud and inconsiderate of other people also eating out, treating it as their own private function room. He began to argue with me, no apologies, no compromise, he then called me "love" three times, being very patronising, standing over me, I said not to call me love, he replied "who are you talking to", whilst gritting his teeth, to which I replied "obviously you" he then told us all to leave the premises and walked away. So we left and definitely will not be returning or recommending. I think this guy is working in the wrong business with this sort of attitude and behaviour. Actually quite worrying. Food itself was ok, beef was tough and veg cold.

Once again we enjoyed a lovely lunch, been many times and never been failed. Good quality home cooked food, good selection on ales, wines etc and great friendly staff. Back soon without a doubt.

Driven past this place a few times and today decided to call in for food. Belly pork cooked perfectly with cabbage potatoes and bacon. I really enjoyed having a bit of crackling with melt in the mouth fat on the belly pork. My wife had feather blade beef with veg and gravy. All cooked to perfection and very good. Staff were very attentive and ensured we were taken care of. Couldn't fit a desert in so can't comment. If they're as good as the main course you won't be disappointed. Reasonable price for food as well. Around £15 per meal. Definitely heading back as the menu overall looked great so will try something else next time. There's a reason the car park is always full and I now know why.

The meal was a real let down they describe it as with Asian style pork with infused Asian cole slaw it was belly pork and normal Cole slaw and the chips were disgusting the tikka masala was nothing special chicken was off and masala out of a jar this pub used to serve nice meals but last 2 times been it's been really disappointing

First time ever visiting The Three Horseshoes, and it was beyond expectations. Firstly greeted at the bar by a girl who I didn’t get her name, very attentive. Then James our waiter perfect, talking all the time, it’s not very often you get young people who interact with customers, well done James. Then Amanda F or was it Amanda S very good. By best review has to go to the kitchen, one word AMAZING! The food was fantastic, had flavour, presentation was great, well done Chef and your team. We are coming back.

I got food positing from them I have been sick and pooing all day I’m nauseous my body temperature keeps changing from sweating to cold and all my bones are aching and I can’t eat anything or drink anything without being sick I’m NOT Happy (I had the lasagna)

Staff couldn’t do more to ensure that my husband’s birthday celebrations went well. From initial contact through to lighting the birthday candles they were all amazing. As we were a large group we had preordered and our food was served piping hot and delicious once we had all arrived. ( I love that the children were served first which allowed them to be settled before our meals arrived moments later.)

Visited the Three Horse Shoes on Christmas Day for Lunch. This was our second visit, the first sometime ago and we were really impressed the first time. Our Christmas Day Lunch was to say the very least exceptional the food was hot and cooked to perfection. We were well taken care of by all the Staff, in particular Josh (a fellow Shihtzu owner) Would highly recommend this establishment to one and all. We were that impressed we’ve already booked for next Christmas Day Lunch.

Just got home from our Christmas dinner which we booked 2 months in advance and it was so disappointing and sad. With it being Christmas eve it didn't feel Christmasy at all. Candles weren't lit, fire wasn't on and I'm not sure Britney spears playing in the background helped. Firstly we asked 4 days prior to be sat near the Christmas tree which when we arrived found we were in the furthest corner of the pub (which has black mold on the walls). We come here at least once a week so thought a little more effort could have been made for a regular customer. Our starters. Black pudding bon bons - The black pudding was ok and the sauce had a nice flavour. Honey and soy prawns The prawns were awful. Firstly you got 4 prawns! Then the honey and soy sauce did not go at all, it was very bitter. Also they had been frozen and reheated so were rubberised. Mains Turkey dinner with ALL the trimmings - The turkey dinner was missing mashed potato and the Yorkshire pudding. Unfortunately we didn't know it was supposed to come with that until we were nearly finished and the table next us got their turkey dinner with ALL the trimmings. Pork with a cream sauce. The Pork dinner was mainly just fat with rubber crackling and the sauce was bland. The veg was tasteless, no flavour just boiled. Sprouts and carrots were also undercooked and hard. 2 roast potatoes on each plate, 2 boiled potatoes and about 6 parsnips which were the nicest thing. Deserts Waffle with Bailey's sauce - chewy waffle nothing special Salted caramel sponge pudding - nice flavour but very dry. All in all we walked away feeling very disappointed. I can't say I would recommend the Christmas menu. It's left a very sour taste so will not be returning for a while. We were given a 25% discount but this doesn't make up for the excitement and anticipation we had for a Christmas meal. Planned on getting a few drinks but the food was so bad we decided not too. In and out with an hour.

Still good but appear to be cutting corners. Always rely on a good Sunday lunch with good service and portions but noticed meat (we had turkey & beef) appeared to be thinly sliced out of a pre-pack, not fresh off a joint so lacked the normal good flavour. Turkey off main menu so 'forced' to have Christmas special at extra cost with the extra benefit of one pig in blanket!

Visited here 29th November, for the Christmas menu with some friends. Another lovely meal, everyone enjoyed their meal. We’ve been here several times and have always had a lovely meal. Adam the manager is very welcoming and friendly, this shows as his staff team follow suit.

We came in for a family meal, we were absolutely spoilt by Noah and Henry, they both really looked after us considering we were a large group. Both very friendly and confident, such a credit to the company. Food was lovely hot and fresh and served in no time, our steaks were cooked perfect. It was very well presented and tasted really nice. Everything was freshly made and not frozen or out of a packet. Totally recommend to anyone looking for a family meal. The atmosphere and decor of the pub was perfect, so warm and cozy. We will definitely return, thank you!

We have visited twice recently once as a party of 6 and more recently two couples on both occasions we were very impressed with the customer service, price and quality of food. Both times food was piping hot and served promptly. We will return - there are not many traditional pubs like this left in the area serving well priced good food.

Terrable food poor quality especially the cheap steak all grissle wouldn't go again staff poor don't listen just want your money

We arrived having rang & tried to book a table & being told they don't book for small parties (4) & just to turn up. Being a Saturday night we were worried but arrived at 6.20pm & got seated straight away. Worries gone. Sadly not. We were told when we arrived that food was taking 30 minutes, absolutely fine about average for a Saturday night. Sadly our 2 starters alone took longer than the 30 minutes quoted, with 2 people not having a starter with plans for dessert, you can imagine how we were feeling an hour & a half later when our mains hadn't arrived! During this time we were given no updates by any member of staff, we actually had to chase up with a waiter where our mains were, they arrived 5 minutes later. By this point we were all starving & looking forward to our meals. We were disappointed once again. Thankfully my dad's meal (who's birthday it was) was presented lovely & tasted good - the chicken & haggis stack. My partner got the steak & hot wings - the steak was cooked well, but the hot wings had no flavour (we didn't need to worry that they were going to blow his head off after all!). My Mam & I were super excited to see it was seafood week as we love it. After much deliberation mam went with the fish platter. Sadly for £22.50 it did not live up to the price you paid I wish we had photos but we were so disappointed there was no want to take photos of it. I got a fish pie, which having been described as a potato topped pie; arrived with no mash on top! It was fish, in a sauce in a dish. I got 2 pieces of broccoli, 3 carrots & about 6 green beans with it. We were asked if our food was OK, we said sadly not & explained the issues. We just got justification about the timings, no apology. Another waitress came over at the end of our meal & asked if it was OK, again we explained our dissatisfaction &again were met with excuses as to why it was so late etc. We asked to speak to the manager. Unfortunately when the manager came over we didn't get the response we expected. "What's wrong" was the opening line. Not a great start. My partner then started explaining, when it got to my fish pie we were told "a fish pie doesn't have to have potato on top" I said fine but then where was the accompaniments, because you can't think what came with that was acceptable, I got "well that's the way we make it here". Eventually after being told by the manager "he couldn't get a word in edgeways & he was going to offer us a reduction to our bill & some free desserts" we said "you were going to?!" He did apologise & explain it wasn't the usual quality that they would like to deliver & gave us 50% off the bill. We thanked him for this & paid the reduced bill. Never have I left a restaurant hungry !!! We had to take a trip to tescos to get food & dessert! A very disappointing experience with customer service which left a lot to be desired. It could have been dealt with in a very different way, which whilst the wait etc would have been the same. We wouldn't have left feeling so disappointed & let down.

Just left the pub for the first time and very disappointed. My husband had the fish goujons and chips which were lovely, I ordered a fillet steak. When it came I couldn't chew parts of the meat due to fat and gristle. When I was asked if it was OK I said I was disappointed with the amount of fat on a fillet. I was told she would tell the chef. I wish now I had taken a picture. When we came to pay £57.25 I was asked again if everything was OK and I re-itereated that I was unhappy with the steak and the evidence was on the plate with the amount of meat sent back. The waitress looked at the owner who said there is no fat on a fillet, which I am well aware of and why I always order one. She told the waitress to speak to the chef and she came back and said he was a butcher and that he said it was OK. The really disappointing thing here was the whole attitude which effectively called me a liar despite the evidence being on the plate. Finally I got an apology from the waitress, not the owner. I would never go back there again because of the whole attitude from the owners. Whatever happened to customer service. They have certainly lost a possible returning customer and I will make sure everyone knows how I was treated.

We arrived at the Three Hose Shoes for a Sunday lunch, this was due to reading a review in the Northern Echo recommending the five top places for Sunday lunch. On arrival we were greeted and shown to an available table, drinks were ordered and served within an acceptable time. The menu is extensive so there should be something for everyone. A specials board is available as well as the Sunday roast. The four of us ordered four different meals and all were lovely and the portions were generous. Desserts were also ordered but some items on the menu were no longer available, again all were enjoyed and very tasty. The prices are reasonable and considering the portions all were good value for money. Sundays are obviously quite busy so maybe not the best day to try it out. Decor and atmosphere is usual country pub style, clean and pleasant. The staff are friendly and keen to serve but again we’re very busy. All in all a nice lunch and a good experience. We will return but maybe mid week. Thank you.

Had a 4 day stay in this wonderful establishment. The warm welcome given as we entered was like being greeted by friends. Houskeeping, bar staff, waiting staff ( especially Josh) and management were fantastic with nothing being too much trouble. The rooms were bright, scrupulously clean and very comfortable with an excellent on-suit facility. The food was well prepared, cooked to perfection and always hot with excellent portion sizes. We had a very enjoyable stay and would happily stay there again.

This pub was recommended to us so we decided to try it out. Very busy Sunday afternoon so top marks to the staff for running the pub efficiently. However the food was poor. We had chicken/bacon dumpling and steak and kidney pudding. The dumpling was rock hard and tasteless. Not a good old fashioned North East dumpling by any stretch of the imagination.Vegetables were cold. Disappointing. Steak in the pudding was chewy and poor quality. The ladies at the next table to us sent their meals back as they were cold. It seems to me that the dumpling and steak pudding we had were probably bought in and heated up. Anyway we’ve tried it …sorry but not impressed with food.

Always somewhere we know we will enjoy the food the ambience the service ,it gets busy but that doesn’t affect the service or the food ,it’s spot on every time ,we love the decor too,has a nice relaxed feel ,there’s outside seating and a very cosy original bar area ,lovely space for a few drinks before the meal

We booked 1 night as we were attending a Military funeral the following day. We arrived late and were met with a warm welcome and shown to out room. The rooms were spacious , fresh and decorated to a very good standard. Bed was lovely and comfortable. Amenities are plenty full with a great range in the bar. Breakfast was brilliant , lovely fill English before a very busy day. The staff were fantastic and always polite and helpful. This is priced well , below average for this type of room with breakfast. An honest, quality establishment that is perfectly managed. Well done to you all

Been a little while since I last visited but I follow their Facebook page and saw corned beef pie was one of the specials this week… my favourite. Oh my goodness it did not disappoint, quite possibly the best pie I have ever tasted. The pastry was perfect. I really hope it is repeated at a later date. Staff were brilliant, very polite and helpful.
