How Fish n Chips should be Genuinely some of the best fish n chips I have ever tasted in all my years. Lovely flaky, meaty haddock. Delicious pale light crispy better not heavy at all. Chips crunch and good portion Even a place to sit down indoors or outdoors with condiments to help yourself. 5 stars all round. Next I’m in York I will revisit for sure!

If you haven't tried Thompson ,go and try it. The Food is fantastic and staff are very helpful and friendly, you get a good amount. Fish and chips ,homemade pie etc . Try it for yourself. 5 star.

I had an oaps special, it was massive. Hubby n brother in law have std, which neither could finish. Only problem my sister is a vegetarian and the garlic mushrooms and hallumi fries are cooked in beef dripping. So she had a jacket spud with salad, which again was beautiful xx

Maybe the best fish n chips I ve had in a good while Super fresh chips really tasty mushy peas chips were top draw .My server with short haircut amd tattoos was outstanding all the staff were friendly and were brilliant Such good value Worth a drive out from Leeds I ll be back very soon

Pulled in for takeaway freshly cooked, portions more than adequate and the fish was absolutely perfect I'd go as far as to say the best I've had

What to say? This is one of only two places I will eat fish and chips! The fish is freshly cooked while you wait, and is perfect, lovely crisp batter, and a large flaky fish, served with enough chips. A great value traditional meal, takeaway, or sit in. excellent.

Shared Haddock an chips + Peas 1 Tea and a breadcake £ 13.50 more than enough for two unless very Hungary, quality very good enjoyed all cleared the tray between us.

What a fantastic fish and chip restaurant with gorgeous fish and chips. Today we were looked after by Helen who was amazing cheery and a breath of fresh air chatting away to our New Zealand visitors. A great recommended experience.

We had a fantastic meal here there were eleven of us a mixture of adults and children. Lots of different choices all the meals came out together and the quality was excellent

Seniors Haddock and Chips. More chips hiding under the fish. Eventually became Haddock or Chips, unfortunately for some chips the Haddock won. Absolutely beautiful piece of Haddock, cooked beautifully well...as a MasterChef judge might say.

We arrived Saturday 8th September. There was a que but we were seated very quickly. Our order was taken in no time att all and the food arrived very quickly. What great quality and as my wife said when we were paying the staff operate like a well oiled machine. This was our second time visiting whilst staying in York. Well doe to the team

Can't say we were too impressed. 4 people. 3 of us left the chips. Whatever it was all cooked in left a nasty taste on the tongue and a film on the lips. Oh, and bread and butter should be BUTTERED. Spread is not butter. Wouldn't go back.

The takeout fish is very nice and fresh .I would definitely recommend Thompson's fish

Excellent all round, had the scampi and chips. Lovely texture on the scampi and great flavour. Ketchup offered with condiments. Even mushy peas were delish.

THE PRAWN AND COD FISHCAKE IS THE BEST ITEM IV EVER BOUGHT FROM A FISH AND CHIP SHOP . .They tase incredible the consistency is same with the filling throughout .. 10/10 .. chips great curry sauce well worth a dip 😄 ... fantastic food 10/10 can't fault it today ...

Amazing gluten free options. Fast service and the staff are happy to answer questions about allergens that are in the food. Very impressed and now our favourite place to order food from.

We were in the York area for a week. So we hate here twice. Fish and chips one night crab salad another. Both lovely. We will be back again. Give them ago you'll not be disappointed

The food portions here are proper Yorkshire portions! They are Massive! The food quality is good and the wait time is low. I highly recommend going here but go with an empty stomach otherwise you won’t be able to eat it!

Travelled 20 miles after a positive YouTube review. Got 4 x Fish and Chips which were anemic - if you had slapped the fish it coud have flapped back. Never again - average at best but a reasobaly sized fish though.

Excellent saw a guy on You Tube "Gary eats" 👏 who went there so I had to go and just as Gary said 10 out of 10

Appalling service from the takeaway side of this establishment...very disappointing...staff very unhelpful & seemed rather uninterested in even being there which is terribly sad as normally great service & great food from the restaurant side...unfortunately not on this visit...

Nice chip shop and has a dine in area. Had some sausage and chips. Sausage was a bit overcooked but okay. Chips were alright too, what you would expect. Like I say nice chip shop perfectly acceptable.

The success of this company does not benefit from quality. The staff is not very friendly, the products are mediocre, and the prices are quite high. I'm not going again.

After driving around the area around our campsite (Flaxton Meadows) on a wild dinner chase, desperately looking for a place to eat, only to be told again and again "We're not serving food tonight" we decided to call in here and give it a try. We're so glad we did. Very friendly staff, quick service, and the food when it came was a) huge and b) excellent value for money. Many places have a menu that claims something is "Giant" but it's far from it. Not here. Our "giant haddock" was huuuuuuge, and it came with mushy peas, chips, bread and butter and a pot of tea. Excellent value. We didn't have room for a dessert, that's how big the portions were. Highly recommended! (Pic shows my "Giant Haddock"

Called in this evening for take away. Then we discovered the little seating area which we had not seen before. Really nice . We were very happy to be able to sit and eat. Well done Thompsons it was lovely.

Nice piece of Haddock, batter could be crispier. Chips slightly underdone and too many on the day (for me) Service bordering on shambolic.

First time eating here today. We were not disappointed at all. An order of fish and chips gets you free mushy peas, tartare sauce, a drink and a slice of bread. If you like curry sauce, you get a jug of it. The battered haddock was crispy, not very greasy too which is very difficult to find. I could not finish all the batter as it was very big. I highly recommend.

Just called for fish and chips, fish was beautiful and it was massive. Just a pity about the bread bun it was stale, will definitely call again.

Pretty good fish and chips restaurant. Quite a bit of seating inside, lots of parking and tasty food.

The fish was a good size and very tasty. Nothing was greasy and the chips were nice too. The curry sauce is more like a Chinese curry sauce, which I like, but is different to other fish shops I've been to which have the distinct fish shop curry, sometimes with raisins/currants.

Portions were huge....had a doggy bag for lunch the next day. Very clean establishment and friendly staff.

Thanks for the food poisoning, however, it wasn't so pleasant when it was coming out of both ends at 3am! We won't be returning.

It is a fantastic restaurant, has a brilliant atmosphere and amazing staff. The portion sizes are really good value for money and the food is amazing. They worked well too accomadte or group of 8 at relatively short notice. Our waitress was really engaging and was really good at including the 4 kids in the group. Following our meal my wife had some questions about the food. Nothing the restaurant had done, but she got a rapid and detailed response. I don't think they could have done more at any part either during or after our visit.

The best place around York to get fish and chips from. Food always cooked fresh. Big portions and great value for money. Staff always friendly. Busy times you sometimes have to wait for a table but I have never waiting long. I 100% recommend Thompsons if you want great fish and chips!

Not very good the chips were all pointy and rock hard probably from been left in the chip scuttle too long. The fish was ok though not "award winning" still slightly too greasy.

Having recently visited this place on for the first time with 7 family members on Friday 25/04/24. I was amazed that this place was only 7 miles from my home and I had not tried it before. We ordered a different variety off the menu and we were massively impressed at the quality of food and service "Especially Jo the server / cook and manager /plus all the staff. The food was a real delight !!!! I had the Cod n chips which was great.!!! plus everyone else thoroughly enjoyed everything they had. !!! The prices and atmosphere plus staff were very exceptional. !!! This is a little GEM!!!! of a "plaice" so much so we returned today 5/7/24 "Excellent as expected" and we look forward to returning soon. "Faultless all round" Jim.

Excellent food. Fish an chips to choose haddock or cod, very well cooked, served with mushi peas. Scampi served with salad and chips, and nushi peas. You can eat it all the traditional way with tea. Take into account that is very busy, very noisy with background conversations, still pleasant.

Called at Thompsons having been to Scarborough for the day and thought we would try their fish and chips and we were not disappointed! I don’t normally do reviews, but on this occasion I was prepared to make an exception. I’ve had lots of fish and chips over the years, but I can honestly say the fish and chips at Thompsons were outstanding! Definitely 5 star quality!

Thompson's is our regular restaurant. It always provides, fresh, specially prepared food. The meals are big, so go hungry beforehand. Staff are welcoming and cater for your every need. The place is always clean and nicely decorated.

Please be away they serve big portions for example Small is a regular Regular is large Large is xl

Good all round fish restaurant absolutely loved from start to finish

Takeaway 5-6-2024. Ordered home made giant fishcake and regular chips for two. Chips average, but the fishcake didn't look appetizing. Battered fishcake consisted of mashed potato, mashed fish and chopped parsley ( i think !). Not cooked to order so probably not at its best. Sorry can't recommend this bland item from the menu.

Superb staff, environmental and food, one of the finest fish and chip restaurants in the UK.

What happened, Team? We love Thompsons and tell everyone how good it is but what a hiccup yesterday (Sunday 19th). We called in after 6pm and ordered our usual cod etc in the restaurant. Our young waitress seemed somewhat distant and unengaging and then when our order arrived it was initially incorrect. Once sorted we were really disappointed. Both our cod and it's accompanying chips seemed really dry and tired - nowhere near what we have come to expect on our numerous visits in the past. It was reasonably busy but not rammed - very odd.

A good place to be if you like your fish and chips. Friendly staff who cater to your every need.

Travelling north ,what a great lunch we had ,friendly staff aswell ,we ate outside because we had a dog with us.

After being recommended (by a complete stranger!) to try this establishment, I was initially disappointed to discover my preferred pie had been sold out, but the exceptionally helpful counter lady went far beyond expectations to 'magic up' one for me! Along with the very generous portion of chips, it made a superb meal; probably the best pie I've ever had, at a very reasonable price. Full marks from me at every stage - thank you for justifying my prior recommendation so well!

Chips were undercooked and Luke warm rather than hot. Service was also incredibly slow.
