We visited Thomas Carr @ the Coast to celebrate my 70th birthday and ate from the tasting menu. The food was outstanding and the wine flight was well matched. All of the courses were excellent, including the mushroom arancini, which was "a treat from the kitchen" It is difficult to choose a favourite from the dishes, as they were all great, however I really enjoyed the turbot whilst my husband's favourite was the stone bass. The desserts were delightful too! The service was excellent, friendly and attentive. This was a brilliant way to celebrate; go if you can!

This was our second visit and if anything it was even better than the first. The food in the seven course taster menu was amazing again- if you like fish it is seafood heaven. The desserts were also exquisite and the matching wine pairings worked really well. The service was also excellent and we had a fabulous evening chatting to another couple.

We had a beyond excellent exquisite 7 course tasting menu, with lovely service. Unable to decide on our favourite dish as they were all amazing. My partner was an executive chef and said it was one of the best meals he had ever had. The hotel was very lovely as were all the staff we met. We will most definitely return and have already told our friends and family to book in.

We had a wonderful evening at The Coast. We went for the 7 course taster menu (£95) plus we had the matching wines. The quality of food was excellent especially when you consider the cost. The freshly baked speciality breads came with two types of butter. The mussel butter was a revelation and very moreish. We had a variety of fish courses including rhubarb cured salmon, turbot with oyster and brown shrimp, plus roasted Monk fish with spicy chicken sausage. I had a hard time picking out my favourites as every course was a delight. The pre-dessert and dessert were a great finish to a lovely evening. If you want a leisurely evening of good food, nice wine, excellent service in a lovely setting this is definitely one to seriously consider. The location is wheelchair accessible, but it is an older building with some reasonanly steep paths. You will also need the reception team to pull the ramp for entering and exiting the building. But, they were very helpful and happy to assist.

Wow, what can I say. There were 4 of us dining using a voucher received as a Christmas present for the 7 course taster menu. Each of the 7 courses were sublime. We even got an extra course for free 😀. Started with 2 different home made breads, black pudding and tomato with 2 beautiful butters to accompany. Each fish course was so different and the detailed presentation made your eyes burst with anticipation. The 2 desserts were amazing one was passionfruit the other jaffa cake. There were no crumbs left on any of the plates! The taster menu is great for trying new food that you probably wouldn't order as a main course and to try new dishes....I even had oysters for the first time. Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning.

Dined here on Friday night, there were three other couples. So it was an intimate experience. We started with a bread course, which was hard not to finish as the homemade butters were delicious. But we tried too as the didn’t want to fill up. Every course was a different type of fish, we didn’t miss meat, as this made a pleasant change. The dishes were interesting and delicious .

This should have been a brillint meal with a chef of this experience. Having in a number of MIchelin star restaurants around the world, I was looking forward to this. It certainly was not Michelin quality! The meal started with a really lovely amuse buche and the promise of great food was made. Unfortunately it all went downhill from there. 5 out of our 6 pieces of fish were overcooked. In a fish restaurant, that is unforgivalble, especially as the restaurant was not busy. Some of the sauces were lovely, but some had a thin layer of water on top of the sauce. The waiting staff are attentive and knowledgable. Not impressed and will not be back. There are much better restaurants in the Scarborough area.

Without doubt this was one of the finest meals out I have ever eaten. A culinary tour de force, accomplished and precise fish cookery in which no course failed to hit the mark. The menu was delicious and beautifully balanced and there nothing on each plate that didn’t work perfectly with the other elements. This place deserves to be visited by those who enjoy a culinary adventure. If it succeeds, and it deserves to, we probably will never be able to afford to go again. Hotel and service were warm and comfortable too.

It was quiet - early January after what the hotel told us was a busy Christmas. The restaurant is attached to, but not entirely part of, the hotel - though the hotel accommodation was traditional and very comfortable. The food was amazing - stunning fish dish after stunning fish dish. When the chicken sausage appeared it was paired with the finest piece of monkfish. It seems that this place needs to define itself in terms of marketing - why does it not have a months-long waiting list like other Yorkshire ‘fine-dining experiences’? This is a virtuoso cook at the top of his game.

ThomasCarr@Coast is a wonderful dining experience. The food is delicious, the mussel butter was a revelation, so different from anything we had ever tasted before. He even managed to make me enjoy monkfish for the first time ever! The room is very minimalist and would benefit from a splash of colour and fresh flowers. It is a great pity that the management of OxPasture Hotel cannot see the potential of this chef and his innovative cooking. If major improvements were made to the rest of the hotel and done sympathetically in keeping with the building but encompassing the details of modern hotels and restaurants holding Michelin stars, then they would have a winning combination. But please don’t let my comments put you off going to experience the exceptional food on offer by a talented chef.

This was a meal that we had eagerly anticipated – particularly in the light of previous reviews of the restaurant. We were left feeling somewhat disappointed, although most of our concerns related to wider issues with Ox Pasture Hall rather than specifically with ‘The Coast’ restaurant (which is actually a dedicated room within Ox Pasture Hall). I will start by saying that the meal itself was fine – the menu was interesting, the food well presented and of good quality – so for the meal itself I would have awarded a 4-5 star rating. However, there were a number of other concerns that made all of us feel that the hotel itself was not being well managed. Specific disappointing factors were: • We were only given a 5 course tasting menu – with no other options offered (despite the Ox Pasture web site stating that the dinner, bed and breakfast option, which is what we purchased, includes a 7 course tasting menu). • We weren’t offered the wine flight – we had to specifically ask (and bizarrely, were asked if we had pre-booked it). • The wine flight was somewhat disappointing, and I felt overpriced for what was provided – indeed they didn’t have sufficient of the desert wine for us all to have the same wine. • The waiting staff didn’t appear to have been trained to the level that one would expect from a Michelin star tasting menu restaurant (I recognise this isn’t Michelin star, but the web site makes a point of stating Thomas Carr’s previous Michelin star status). This is not intended as a criticism of individuals, who were pleasant and personable, but just really to reflect a lack of training and experience at high quality restaurants, and a lack of supervision at Ox Pasture. Descriptions of the wines were clearly not from someone experienced in those wines – and were often limited to a few descriptive words from flavour notes (for example, “citrus, plum, vanilla”), rather than a detailed explanation of what the wines were, and how they complemented the course being served. • The wine glasses were poor quality and more akin to what I’d expect in pub chains rather than a top restaurant. • Despite being the only four customers in the restaurant on a Friday night, we saw no sign of the chef – this was a disappointing omission in the context of the lack of enthusiasm and promotion of what ‘The Coast’ had to offer described above.
