Very busy!!! Fish and chips delicious!

Not what it used to be . Bedders used to be Special and a proper treat to go to. Unfortunately not the case anymore. The chips were awful and 3 lads at work actually left them. They were Greasy,small hard and crisp and hurt my teeth to chew them. Shame another great famous establishment gone down the pan. Wouldn’t go back there if I was starving.

Fish and vinegar dipped onions were very nice. Chips and mushy peas were cold. Take away is cheaper than dine in. On dine in unlimited onions were available.

Absolutely fantastic. Went around 5pm on a Friday and for £12 you get fish & chips, mushy peas, a slice of bread and hot cuppa. Everything on that plate was A1 and although the place was really crowded we managed to find a nice table. Everything very clean, tables cleared promptly and a good atmosphere. OK so it's not cheap compared to McD's for example but the food quality is excellent and there's your evening meal done and dusted with no washing up to do. Parking can be a challenge but there are spaces which free up quite fast.

Not having been for many years, I was disappointed at the quality of the chips. The service was very friendly and I was very pleased I was offered scraps, delicious 😋. May have been an off day but with the reputation they hold, I will be back again soon.

Still the best chippy in Birmingham. The original approach from years ago still prevails today. Proper fish too.

Sorry Bedders, will not be coming here again!! After all the years coming here, from when Martin was frying and the owners that took it on from 7 year's after, the new owners now, not a patch to the taste and quality on how it use to be... such a shame!!!

Birminghams top chippy and the only one myself and work colleagues use, food is always good making it very popular as both a sit down and eat venue or an order and take out choice. The prices are in keeping with current price rises so very competitive for the area. Can get busy at lunch times however there are plenty of staff working hard to serve customers as quickly as possible.

The fish wasn't as good as it used to be but still better then a kot of places I've eaten fish and chips.

Very disappointed with both the quantity and price of the food. The fish was very small for the price. Cooked reasonably well.

The food is quite nice. However, the opening times are weird and they are closed most of the time.

I'm not a local to the area, but the staff are friendly, the service is prompt and the fish and chips are up there with the very best I've had. The curry sauce is excellent also.

The place is decent, not the best fish & chips you’ll have for sure. Portion is decent as well for the price. Fish was quite oily same as the chips. Wasn’t a fan of the curry sauce, if it was thicker then it’d be better. Been wanting to come here for years and I did expect a lot better.

Such a lovely place to eat your food. The staff are so friendly and helpful. And the fish and chips are second to none.

I had some fish last Friday I was bad after that got food poisoning went to the doctors on the Monday not been right after this

The food was nice fish slightly small. Chips were very nice and chunky 😋 parking is a big issue and opening time are limited which cam be extended. Small fish and chips with curry sauce and a can of drink came to £10.50p they have indoor seating area.

Since the new owners have taken over the shop. The chips have no taste to it and they are made from cheap potatoes and they are over priced. I miss the old owners chips they were quality chips. A let down. I can't say anything about the fish yet, I haven't tried it yet.

I have used this fish and chip shop, many years Wanted my usual sausage /chips/mushy peas. Chips were not to the usual standard sausage greasy soggy and tasteless just edible and around £5.My friend wanted a steak and kidney pie microwaved and terrible this place has dropped there standards. Might have been a one off watch this space.

Great but could be open more than there times also should do a bit more of a variety but expensive due to col prices as some people find it hard they don't do deals

Hadn't been since just after the new owners took over. Prices are reasonable for what's included. Hospitality wasn't great; the young ladies serving didn't have the best personalities; looked and sounded like they didn't want to be there. Food is mediocre; chips are relatively nice and tasty. Battered sausages were nice but dripping with oil. Give this place a try and judge for yourself. :)

Best chippy in Birmingham won't go any where else

Sorry but I'm gonna be honest, came in around 4:30 on Friday after a long day's work..normally bedders is absolutely delicious but on this occasion I wasn't at all impressed..batter on my haddock was simple and looked like breadcrumbs chips tasted like they've been sitting there since lunchtime, on the flip side the Fanta lemon was nice

I’ve been here a couple of times and it’s very unique and tasty, I’ve never seen a chippy like it. Chippy served on a plate with onions and fish bits on top is great! Reasonably priced too and comes with a drink. Although I am told by several people that it used to be better a few years ago.

Iv been going bedders 40years when john and martin had it then it was a lovely Italian family who kept it exactly the same way wye change a winning formula if its not broke dont fix it sausage has been changed new ones terrible pies have been changed not half as good as the ones supplied by coopers butchers no soak peas now salty mushy peas wot you get from most chipys the fish is still good and the staff still great but all those changes have ruined the business i never hered in 40 years 1 person complain so the owner now byes cheaper potatoes the main thing for a chipy is good quality spuds and fish people telling me they wont go back now more than 15 i know in the last 2 months the chips are dry and hard like splinters the staff now wots going on theres plates full of chips left on the tables i just cant see bedders surviving if they carry on serving chips like that wot a shame its been open all them years and someone has ruined a successful business

Decided to try this hyped place. Expensive for a small portion of fish and undercooked chips. Had fish from other places that are far, far better. Cannot understand why this place has such a following; either I’m wrong or others haven’t tried seaside fish! Not worth the hype, everything is standard nothing is so special that you’d want to try it again. Maybe once it was better but judging from my meal it sure is no different from other regular chippies that do cod/haddock.

This is the 3rd time I’ve tried bedders and it’s been horrible, the fish was dry and over cooked, tasted like a frozen fish. batter was very thin and was falling apart, chips were fresh but the potato was dry, this used to be so good when the original owners were here, it’s no where near the same. I don’t recommend it.

Wonderful fish and chips..but was cold in there the day we went,so the only hot thing was fish..chips and peas plus tea.went cold quick..so left most of them. It was just one of those days..but will still go !!

Just had great cod and chips for lunch. Very reasonable and fantastic quality. Will definitely be back soon.

Environment: Clean and tidy. Staff: Well spoken, attentive to order. Food presentation: Very good. Quantity: Value for money Ordered the Fish and Chips with mushy peas, sliced bread with margarine spread, pickled onions and  cuppa!! Verdict: Not at all disappointed with the food and very well worth the visit. I have not been here for 6 years as I'm no longer in Birmingham but honestly,  brings back the emotion of eating such amazing fish and chips.  Unparalleled in taste and quality.  They leave you very satisfied,  you do not feel like you have over eaten or you've had a heavy meal,  it's hard to describe how good Bedders are. Cleanliness is also impressive, and hence well worth a visit. The management and staff ensure the premises remains hygienically clean, internally very traditional in decor, very simple but nice. Conclusion: Try it, you will not be let down they open very limited hours so check before you go.  Also there is often a queue and hence be willing to wait.

Superb value and a real throwback, fish cooked to perfection and chips and mushy peas were lovely, ate in with "onion’s and vinegar” ladled onto it by yourself if you like it .bread and butter and a cup of tea or cold drink for under £11.00 when eating in.

We love this place and the food but on the last visit, we took a friend to introduce him to the place. What a mistake! The chips were burnt. As we arrived early on, it wasn't a case of needing to change the cooking oil. But they were still OK and we could live with it. The main bone of contention was the cold. It was minus three outside and there was no heating in the place. We had to dress as Eskimo's to eat. Totally unacceptable and while I always made a pilgrimage to this place, I shall no longer do so.

I've been using Bedders (more and more sporadically) for the best part of 40 years and for most of that time raved about it as the best chippie in Brum if not further afield. I think I've written a couple of previous reviews about it over the years, and I think my last one from a few years ago was not so glowing as it had recently changed hands from the original Bedders family. I'd read on here that it had changed hands a second very recently, and the reports didn't seem very encouraging. For this reason I hadn't used it much in the last couple of years but I met up with my son there today, and to keep this short, have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised, - I don't think the batter on the fish is quite the same as it was in its heyday, but that aside, very good quality fish and chips. They seemed to be busier than my last few visits, which is a good sign. If you haven't been back recently, I'd suggest giving Bedders another go.

I must have driven past several hundred times since the 80s whilst always thinking, I must visit there some time, given its reputation. My older brother mentioned to me that our mother and father used to do their courting there in the 1950s, and as we were nearby after a Cemetery visit, we called in. The food we got was the same as has been served there since those old days, with barely a concession to modern tastes. For me that is a strong point. Do something well and stick with it. We both had the Cod and Chips with mushy peas and the free sliced onions in vinegar, which need adding carefully to the small plates, as they are full. It was cooked fresh to order half an hour before they closed, and soon after our arrival they had sold out of fish so closed the shutters. Fresh and crisp, everything was as it should be, and it was half the price of a very similar meal in a Weston Super Mare chip shop last Spring. I said to my brother, this is about 8.5 out of 10. It would have been great to have tried it before the original owners left, but that was my fault for procrastinating. Staff were polite and professional, what I believe is the second handing over of the ownership seems to have left it in good hands. Worth a visit.

I went n the 24/10/22 and just realised it’s under new management the last time I visited was under the previous management and noticed the big difference firstly they had no haddock fish so we had cod which was not a big deal but the batter of the fish was soggy and the place was dead not that many customers. I remember back in 2011 before the opened for lunch time their was a big line of customers waiting to get in. It’s such a shame an iconic shop like bedders has gone downhill. I hope the management fix this issue

Me and my mum went there and it was fun. We got a bacon butty and a fry up. It was fun. But the sausage was too long and not very nice

Been going there for over 40 years and its was the best chip shop ever! Just been (for the fist time in about 5 years as I no longer live round there) and the chips were greasy and un edible. The fish tasted like it had been cooked for 10 minutes and again un edible, mushy peas were fine, but I guess out of a tin. What's gone wrong?

Used to walk to beddars from Stockfield Road in Yardley with my brothers and sisters when we were kids. It eas the best chip shop in brum.great memories

Fish was greasy new people in shop not the same as the previous people who use to serve me and since these new people have come in the standard has dropped significantly. My grandmother came here all her life and I use to come with her eat in or take out was always amazing quality the previous people always made the fish flaky and not greasy chips was always perfect and the onions was always top quality now its just like someone’s trying to copy but not doing anywhere near as good of a job. I ate in about two months ago with my partner both of us felt strangely unwell like we’d eaten just pure grease and at the time I noticed fish over cooked than normal and much more greasy and also noticed new people in the shop serving, I put this experience down to just a bad day but after having my lunch here today and having the same i think thats me done travel from Wolverhampton and for the price the old quality was well worth every penny but now there are many nicer chip shops for a lot less. Its sad to be writing this review after being a long time customer but I fear this has changed ownership and if thats the case this is no longer the same.

Excellent. Fresh fish in thin batter, just cooked, drained for 30 seconds, then on your plate. Lovely chips and mushy peas. Always packed But that was then. The new owners have killed the golden goose. The price has got silly. Apparently, it is empty on Friday lunchtime Last time I went it was disappointing Idiots

I belived this place is over rated for the fish service is good and quick and place to eat in shame only open few days a week and a few hours so it gets a 2 star just any other chippy after changing hands

Having been coming to Bedders for nearly 40 years, when the Bedder family retired as a family we thought that’s the end but there was hardly much change other than a nice refurbishment with the new owners Today I was surprised to see it under new management again, seeing the shop more or less empty on a Friday I should have realised things had changed big time A very disappointing visit no warm welcome and food not the same, small overcooked fish chip ok and peas Bread not the same or the tea, tea was warm and not nice so poor value now and not worth travelling too sadly The clean feel was missing too squashed chips on the floor when I sat down Always raved to friends and colleagues best place for fish and chips in the area but I think I will see how other people feel over the coming weeks

I’m a regular customer here been coming here for years as I do come here during lunch time. Recently the food quality has been off. I brought fish and chips today however the fish quite over cooked and very oily. I enjoyed the bread and butter tho. The place is very nice and cosy, food quality could definitely improve. Especially when you pay £10 for quality fish and chips.

Been visiting this chip shop for 40 years every few weeks and got to say its the worst its ever been. Never had a complaint until the new owners turned up. With the last 3 times leaving not very inpressed. Overcooked chips and curry sauce like p!$$ water. Fish was tasty but not like it used to be. Tbf i was offered fresh chips when i complained but only after they'd had thought about what i said and had already sat down, not good enough. Price has never been a problem for me but even those have nipped up for what you could describe now as mediocre food. The shop where one you had to cue to get a seat is now empty. Just sad to see the demise of such an iconic chippy.

Eat In Order: Two Battered Cod and Chips, 2 Battered Sausages, with sides of Peas, Gravy, Onions, 2 slices of Bread, a cup of Tea, a Pepsi can and chilli sauce. I had been wanting to try here ever since heard of it! As it's close and nicely priced. Must I say this beat my expectations, we both said it was the best fish & chips place we'd ever been too! All the food was so fresh, tastes incredible! Amazing textures, the batter was perfect. Went down amazingly. The Staff were ever so lovely, so acommidating and kind. We were so satisfied with our whole experience and we can't wait to come again. Thank you ever so much, I'm so glad to of enjoyed fish again with a chippy. Also guys the cleanliness it super, very nice in there!

I agree with Tracey standards have definitely declined since the new owners have taken over. I had a take out, the chips had moulded into one and the fish was greasy, the mushy peas were good. Also staff shouldn't be plaiting hair whilst serving customers not a good sight. Every business has a chance to redeem itself so hopefully this is just a blip and things will improve.

One of the best classic 'fish n chips' shop in the West Midlands since 1946, authentic British feel. You have a choice of Cod, Haddock or Plaice that attracts people of all walks of life. This shop is deserving of being featured in the hit TV show 'The Peaky Blinders'. Overall = excellent, authentic, classic and local legend.

Best fish shop in Birmingham, been visiting here for a good few years even though I don't live locally. So filling, love the onions on top too.

Portion extremely small and price very high. Don't know what the hype was about. Taste was same as my local chip shop.

I used to have lunch here around 1970 when I worked across the road at Smiths Industries, 27p for the same meal that is £7.50 now. Every Blues home game I get the early 7.30 train from Bexhill on sea where I now live so...

Just the right amount of food, really tasty. Well cooked at a good price.The staff are very hard working, friendly, always smiling. Very clean. Just love it.

This was once one the best, now I'm sorry to find it is in decline, I know the last owner told the New owners not to change anything, I wish they taken that advice, they think there customers don't notice, but the last time I went there I went straight in, served and straight out, at one you be there waiting at least 20 - 30 minutes to get served, isn't that telling them something ?.

Wow this Chip shop is so Consistent with there service and quality of food me and my sister have been going for the last 12yrs, and our views have never changed. I recommend everybody to go atleast once. It is a Classic Traditional Chip shop, its the closest you will get to seaside quality fish and chips in Birmingham. They also do this onion vinaigrette which goes on the fish and chips omg its to die for. If your a proper foodie u must try. Coventry Road Birmingham opposite the Big Asda.
