Perfect place for Sunday dinner with the family. Excellent, well-presented but unpretentious food, high quality meat, really good veg - especially liked the (deep fried?) kale. The pub has come a long way in the last year with a new menu and some dedication to creating a destination environment. A couple of years ago I would’ve been hard-pressed to recommend the pub to anyone other than locals who were looking for a quick bite to eat, but with the new menu they have really stepped up their game. There are some great walking trails and the pub is a beautiful 30 minute walk away from Fountains Abbey and the gorgeous grounds there. Come watch the locals watch the visitors. Very entertaining.

What a surprise and a welcomed one at that!! We were caught in the horrific rain/snow/wind/storm over the weekend and decided to seek shelter in the the Yorkshire Hussar's. Immediately we could see, we were not the only ones who had thought to do so. However, the greetings from the staff were great, light hearted and just what we needed as we were drenched and cold. My fiancé and I thought we may as well grab some food whilst we were there, it looked and and smelt great, so would be rude not to. Expecting a long wait time as they were very busy (15:45ish), we were pleasantly surprised, the food arrived on our table within 15-20 minutes piping hot and delicious, much better than we had expected. We had our little girl with us whom the staff made a great effort to entertain, we felt really welcomed. If you are even considering to pop in and give the Hussar's a try - you will not be disappointed. In summary; Very reasonably priced, fantastic food (locally sourced), a plethora of ales, spirits and soft drinks catering for all occasions. The owner was even on hand making sure everyone was comfortable - true gent. Negatives: We now have to go back as it was brilliant. Many thanks for your hospitality.

It's been a tough year for hospitality and especially for the local village pub. My family moved to Markington just before Christmas and for obvious reasons we have been unable to visit our local pub the Yorkshire Hussar. Yesterday we were able to do this for the first time and try the food and hospitality.I really cannot speak highly enough for the quality of the food and the friendly welcome, the food was truly excellent and for a party including two adults, two teenagers and a 12 year old the choice was great and we all found something we liked. The prices were reasonable and they seem to have regular promotions (yesterday was fish and chip Thursday but 1 get 1 half price).Markington itself is beautiful with the Nidderdale AONB and Fountains Abbey on the doorstep. Do yourself a favour and pay a visit to the Yorkshire Hussar this summer, you won't regret it.Neil Thompson

We had been meaning to try this place for a while and went there a couple of weeks ago with some friends. We had booked a table for 8pm, we had a nice table in the window and were given some menus. The waitress came to take our order but we had been chatting so asked for an extra 5 minutes & were told “no problem”. She returned and took our order. Food came in a perfectly acceptable time and was very nice. The waitress cleared the table some time after we had finished and we expected her to return with a desert menu but she didn’t. After waiting a while my husband went to the bar to ask for some, a different waitress brought us them and told us 3 of the options were sold out which we were disappointed with as they would have been our choices. As we were looking again the landlady came over in a rather abrupt manor to tell us we could only have ice cream as the chef had gone home!! She said “we stop serving at 8.30 and it’s now 9.15!” At no point did anyone inform us that an 8pm booking on a Saturday evening would only mean a main course!! The food we had was good but the service wasn’t, the waitress was friendly but the landlady was not. Again we had to go to the bar to ask for the bill as we couldn’t get anyone’s attention. The bill was wrong 3 times!! It a real shame because we would have returned however, that won’t be happening mainly due to the attitude shown towards us

We dined in the bar area - there was a great ambience: the service was friendly, prompt and efficient: the food well presented and very enjoyable. Just the usual carrots, green beans and peas in terms of side veg. Lacked that extra something (no stuffing, cauliflower cheese, parsnips etc). WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THE VEGGIE SUNDAY ROAST. Advertised as a 'vegetable bake', but in reality just the usual side veg on your plate with a few slices of courgette on top. Expected some sort of nut roast or something more substantial.

Second visit after we so enjoyed the first 18 months ago. Food was good, but confused for us if punching for a Michelin star. Menu very similar, if not the same for some courses. Large beetroot bread roll, no beetroot flavour but great bread… size large to start filling you up. Next 2 amuse bouche , starters v good. Roast beef main course, hearty and pleasant, but seems at odds as hearty as I say rather than michelin, plenty of local pubs do as good or better. Two desserts attempting to be back on michelin spectrum but too similar…. Just nothing stand out. This time we used a voucher, so rather resent having to pay a service charge then on its gift value, but we didn’t quibble. Drinks expensive, so for the total price of the meal and drinks we weren’t convinced this was value for money, would prefer to spend elsewhere, so may not return in the near future. Still a lovely setting.

Lovely staff--nothing too much trouble. Tried a cake similar to a fat rascal but more moist with lots of almonds/pistachios.

We had a sandwich each. Very nice, lots of killing, salad, and crisps. Good value. The tea was good as well. Dog friendly.
