The shop was quiet so we took the opportunity of an early lunch. Ordered 2 roasties and ate in upstairs. The meals are served in a cardboard box with wooden cutlery. A bit of a challenge to eat but we managed as the food was very good with tender juicy meat. Unfortunately the premises are filthy and this is not the best environment in which to eat your meal. The place needs closing down for a week, deep cleaning and redecorating. Take away would be a better option.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Had the pork sandwiches which the pork was thickly sliced, stuffing roasties bit of gravy with extra portion of pork scratchings which was £4.50 a tub. Little expensive but well worth it, was best we've ever had, really crispy without all the slimey fat. Highly recommend it. Only downside was having to go upstairs to dine in. Where the upstairs could really do with a clean. Cobwebs with flies on window. Toilet could do with a Thorough going over too. But food was spot on. 👌 atmosphere. There was only us upstairs dining.

Had a beef Yorkie wrap & a roast in a big pudding. Overall brilliant but the queue was massive! I’d say it was worth the wait though. It’s quite small so getting a large volume of people through is tough. There’s another one in the city centre that didn’t seem as busy so will head there next time! Gravy was bag on & got a pot of crackling too!

Visited the Stone gate/Goodram Gate restaurant on 30/10/24 mid afternoon when it was not very busy. Despite this the service was at a snail's pace and staff seemed very disengaged. Once I'd paid at the till I could see terrible state of food prep area, vwry messy, food hygiene gloves and scraps of food littered the floor, while the person at the till said he had to wait until he could take the next order as there was a backlog but just stood there looking bored instead of finding a broom to clear the area. When our food was made, we went upstairs to seating area only to find the most disgusting site, dirty tables, bins overflowing, and a filthy floor and walls. Went back down to ask if there was anyone avaliable to give area a clean and was told by staff member that there was spray and blue roll to clean it ourselves. Food was tasty but very slim pickings in terms of meat and tbh if I'd had seen the state of the seating and prep area before ordering I'd have stayed well away. Considering people left reviews about the state of the place over a month ago I would expect it to have been adressed by now. Emailed directly, no response hence the review. Score in the door's 4 rating is generous.

Don’t be deceived by the display at this restaurant, as the portions are very small. The huge chunk of pork with the crispy top is just a decoration, as they don't even give you cracklings when you order with pork meat. The staff don’t seem happy and aren’t very welcoming; you feel like a nuisance when you walk in. The food was mediocre—you’ll get a little of everything, like two or three strips of carrots and a few beans. The pudding was cold, and there was very little meat. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you’re looking for an authentic York Roast. ❌❌❌

The food was lovely, I can't fault it at all, the staff also lovely, and I was so lucky to arrive when there was no queue so I was served instantly. The reason behind the 3 stars (would be 5 if it wasn't for this) I'm assuming the owner, came downstairs and told the staff behind the counter not to let anyone other than customers use the toilet (completely fair especially in a tourist trap area) but the way this was directed at the employees was rather abrupt, and rude and it was repeated multiple times infront of me waiting for my order. I'm sure they understood the first time. As someone who's worked in hospitality for over 10 years, and has a few years as a duty manager under the belt, barking orders to your employees isn't how you should conduct yourself at all, but to do so infront of or in the vicinity of your customers (where they're able to hear) is absolutely inappropriate and I'm confident will have made the staff feel embarrassed. I agree that paying customers only should have access, and if staff members haven't followed the rules absolutely they should be put straight, but never infront of other employees and especially not customers. I do hope this is taken as advice, because it truly is, show the incredible staff you have some integrity and recognition.

I don't normally do reviews but was so disappointed that I thought I would do it this time. Veg was all undercooked, potatoes very dry with not enough gravy to make it at least edible. The meat was actually nice. I asked for pork and my wife had beef. When I asked if I could have some crackling I was then sold a cup of crackling that was so tough it was unedible. And paid £4 for the privilege .We had ours to eat in, where the food was still served in a cardboard box and then we found it hard to actually eat as everything was so tough to cut with the rubbish wooden cutlery we were given. And to top it off the dine in area was messy with the bins overflowing. I will definitely not be going back.

We decided to eat here as the roasted meats in the window looked amazing. The gentleman was very polite and helpful who served my husband. That's about the only good thing about the experience here. I went upstairs to find us a table. The whole place looked very dirty and uninviting. The wooden knives and forks were useless that were provided to eat our meal. The food was very underwhelming, we had a Yorkshire pudding beef wrap. The meat was very tender, but not very flavourful. It tasted of not alot, the veg inside was very overcooked. It was edible. Bland is the word I would use. When we finished our meal we both used the bathrooms provided. They were absolutely filthy. They need a deep clean. Overall, the Yorkshire pudding wraps were really good . The seating area is very quirky and adds to the experience and has a toilet 🚻 you can use before going off and exploring the rest of york. The only downside was that it did not come with gravy, and this is an extra you buy for £2.50 in a cup, or you can buy a splash of it, but if you're like me a splash just doesn't cut it. The look and smell of this shop is like hearing the voices of the 'sirens' singing come to me. However A little like those Greek mythological creatures the allure is a little more than the reality. I didn't realise the wrap was a cold, flat Yorkshire pudding. It says it on the menu but trying to decide what you want with a queue building pressured me into buying a 'wrap' as opposed to a sandwich. But I was still happy with this until I had it. In the wrap you get turkey or pork or I think beef was an option too. Carrots, beans with stuffing and cranberry as options plus gravy. Wrapped then re- warmed in a grill. It's not that big, maybe 15cm, and doesn't hold together that well so not easy to eat. Taste wise, cold, soft Yorkshire pudding isn't great at the best of time, a little gravy which has no disernable flavour and veg that has the texture of cooked veg re-warmed in a microwave was not improved with the very small amount of shredded meat which failed to add any real value. Overall it was a tasteless stodge that was over priced and difficult to eat being very dry. At the cost charged it was extreamly poor value. I think it's a great idea and twist on 'street' food but doesn't compete with the burrito or kebab. But I think it could, just needs more work. Other options like a boxed meal might be better value or if you aren't particularly fussy it might suit. But for not much more you can sit down in a nearby pub and have a better meal altogether. If your in a rush though, go for chips.

Nice little place with seatings available upstairs. Roughly it seats 20 people so not a big space. The roast were nice but the portion of the meat was lacking, however you can ask for more meat for an extra £2.50. The stuffing was good, not too heavy or salty. The veggies were okay, a bit bland and carrots were a bit too hard for me. If you have to pick between pork or beef roast, I'd suggest pork because it was very tender and soft. Also, remember to ask them to keep the skin or they will remove the crunchy skin! I spent roughly £12 per person including a drink (cup of tea).

Looks delish, but taste is sadly lacking. Messy to eat, with flat wood cutlery.

The male staff at the till is so rude. This is not the first time I’ve encountered some microaggression from ellerby’s staff. Please do better it is not nice to treat people like that.
