Unfortunately this pub CLOSED Jan 24! It was our regular, mainly Wednesday night out. Amanda and Dave were great hosts, customers friendly and food great. Alas they had a run in over a beer issue with the notorious Humphrey Smith. Very unfortunate but not unusual with this chap. It’s a real shame!!!

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to the landlord David for your kind hospitality in a bad situation yesterday for me. I am a contractor for the Sam Smith’s chain and made a visit there yesterday and as I went to leave my van (clutch) broke down. I rang leaseplan who put me through to the AA and with it being busy it took 7.5 hours to get someone to me to tell me it couldn’t be fixed so it needed a pick up truck which took a further 90 minutes which wasn’t good when you’ve been out for work since 6.30am. It was midnight before I got home and I was very thankful in that David made me welcome and kept me stocked up on Yorkshire tea. Also met some lovely regulars (Lesley and her husband) and bar staff Paige and molly were also lovely to me . Thank you so much

Christmas Dinner get-together with family, some had traveled up from as far away as Portsmouth, and we couldn’t have asked for more. We were a party of nine, ranging in age from 14 to 82; everyone had a thoroughly good time. The room was bright and cheery, the food was hot, plentiful and well cooked, the table was large and decorated with festive trimmings. We had plenty of time to enjoy ourselves, in a relaxed old-fashioned way. Excellent.

Only slight issue for us was called when very quiet so the no music of any kind old school ambience got a bit lost in the silence.

A truly awful meal that will take a long time to forget. The food here is terrible, verging on offensively bad. We were a party of 5 adults and every single meal was dreadful. None of the dishes made sense in their conception. There was a distinct 70s vibe. The veg was completely overcooked and obviously came from frozen. Even the chips were inedible. The cauliflower is going to give me bad dreams. I don't know how it is possible to foul a vegetable, but they managed it. We all had to eat something else after we left to get the bad taste out of our mouths, no exaggeration. The atmosphere in the pub was good. It was lively and cosy and the garden is nice.

Booked for 4 and half the party arrived well before time - table was available but stressed that a further reservation was lined up 2 hours later for the same table. Led to understand some table attendance would materialise but not so. Two attending the bar seemed harassed and gave little indication of welcome. Food was ordered but seemed to arrive out of sequence from the later arrived party on the adjacent table. Specials were a tad eclectic & little provision for vegetarians. Only redeeming feature was the good company of our party: would not choose to go again on a Saturday & might not even be tempted to return ever.

Omg everytime I eat here which is pretty much every year on my Nan's birthday I leave feeling sick, the place I think they like to think is 'oldy worldly' but I fact is just disgusting old vases/china/weird Teddy's are absolutely covered in a layer of dust, weird dried plants hanging front the roof which look awful with cobwebs and dust, menu is stupidly big meaning that litterly apart from the salad none of it can be freshly cooked as that would mean you would wait for hours!! I had a roast turkey and my friend a roast pork did not look any different from each other even the waitress as confused a layer of dried gravy had formed around the plate which indicated it had been in the microwave, veg were soggy and smelt the gravy was tasteless and the meat is not worth mentioning so dry nearly Inedible u get a huge plate of this slop which is why a lot of people flock here but clearly it's uneducated people that have never tasted 'good food' that write good reviews about the food here, lastly we had some sort of cheesecake which tasted synthetic and had about 3 huge scoops of ice cream served with it which one can only assume is to try and disguise the taste of the cheap cheesecake. The drinks are also cheap opting to serve syrupy cheap coke and soft drinks out of the pump which made me feel sick. The man behind the bar was rude and looked as though he'd never been taught to smile. We were prob the only young ppl there apart from the waitresses looks as though a nursing home has dropped off it's occupants. The menu is vast, takes about eight minutes to read and take your glasses! The food is always good, but doesn't have the 'wow' factor. The portion sizes are large, which necessarily is not a good thing - I don't like to see food left. Nice touch was the offer to refill your coffee cups at no extra charge. I have a feeling I may have reviewed this pub/restaurant before but in case not, I must say now that it has improved a great deal since my last visit when my wife and myself experienced some fatty lamb, dismal "packaged" dessert and some miserable faces behind the bar. This time I was there as part of a Club walking event, with around 15 of us converging on the Yew Tree at the end of our 5 miles of mud-slogging. They are well used to walkers so they didn't mind our attire especially as we had booked the "snug bar" to ourselves. Obviously, it made for a very pleasant atmosphere but the major bonuses were the very good food, lovely service (not too quick) and the warm, chatty welcome from the hosts. No sign of the former misery behind the bar although my wife tells me the people there have been present for many years now. All the dishes were reported excellent by our members (and some wives) and as well as Harvey's wonderful; ales they also serve a lovely dark mild and dark bitter (nostalgia rules !).

My wife and I visited this fine establishment with our 6 month old son on our way across the Pennines visiting family. It is situated just off the M62, providing a convenient stop-off point for the weary traveller. The pub is spotlessly clean with gleaming furniture and a well-stocked bar. It is split into several rooms with a larger bar area in the centre. There are real fires dotted around the pub which are a very attractive feature this time of year. I also noticed a smart-looking beer garden area to the side of the pub, facing the motorway, which I thought would be an ideal spot for watching the world go by in warmer weather. This was our first visit and we were made to feel extremely welcome by the landlady, Jackie, who was very friendly and provided us with an excellent service. A varied choice of hearty pub favourites was available to choose from, over a refreshing pint of Sam Smiths (a range of lagers, bitters and mild are available here). Our food (sausage & mash and scampi & chips) was of generous proportion, high quality and tremendous value. We were full to the brim afterwards and the meals set us up nicely for the remaining journey ahead of us. This is a pub which ticks every box: décor, atmosphere, service, quality (drinks and food) and value for money – I only wish it was on my doorstep but we will certainly be visiting it again at the earliest possible opportunity. Many thanks Jackie for making the three of us so welcome; we hope to see you soon.

The beef in the stroganoff was tender and plentiful and the yellow rice very tasty. Two eggs came with the gammon which was HUGE! The chips with the gammon were home cooked and came with a generous serving of baby peas. Both meals hot and very generous portions. We met some friends here for Sunday lunch after it being recommended by one of them. Lovely setting and well presented from outside, but things start slipping once you get past the door. Inside the place resembles a cross between a twee tea room and a junk shop. The dining area is large and has a menu to match it... If that wasn't enough, the "specials" board nearly doubled the selection. This is not a good thing!Described by others as "proper pub grub", nothing could be further from the truth. I was going to play it safe with scampi and chips but ended up being tempted by "beef Wellington". This, as it turned out, was a mistake. What arrived was a soggy lump of half cooked pastry, covering a dry, over cooked, grey lump of beef, with overpoweringly salty pâté sticking the two together. An arrangement of nuked vegetables completed the dish, all served on a freshly microwaved plate. It was almost inedible. Others on the table had "beef stroganoff" - some kind of beef and mushroom stew on rice and served with salad on the too-hot-to-hold plate; not to be mistaken with the delicately prepared dish with a sour cream sauce. Also, a fillet steak for £20 - which is expensive for a place that gets the rest of the dishes so wrong. With others' comments on the Sunday roasts, I'm relieved we avoided this. The deserts didn't redeem the situation. While the portions were quite frankly obscene, they're little more than lumps of cream, with cream and cream. It seems there's a loyal following of reviewers that have seriously overrated the food at this pub. It simply is not worth the 4-star Trip Advisor rating. No where near.Avoid!

It always makes me nervous when I see a huge menu in a pub - a lot of food cooked badly as opposed to a little cooked well. My partner raved about this pub so we went there for Sunday lunch - my school dinners were better. I ordered Roast Beef - what came was close to cardboard, overcooked vegetables, soggy roast potatoes - all swimming in a processed instant gravy. I looked around at what the other diners were eating, none looked any better. On a good point, the staff were all very courteous!

We'd heard many good reports about this pub/restaurant but never managed to find out for ourselves until Friday when we decided to treat ourselves to a nice pub lunch after spending all week "tidying" up the garden! We arrived about 1.30 p.m. and the car park was almost full and so we were worried that we might not get a table. We were in for a lovely surprise. Even though this was our first visit they made us very welcome and there were still plenty of tables available. The choice of menu was superb, ranging from their standard fare to specials - in fact for us there was too much choice as everything sounded lovely and reasonably priced!I had the poached salmon with prawns in a mushroom and cream sauce and my husband choice the ham and onion pudding. Both were really tasty, the ham was plentiful and not gristly, with a large selection of home-grown fresh vegetables on large plates. I selected chips rather than new potatoes and these were beautiful, crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside and not greasy. Bliss! When chatting with the staff we found out that the ham is home-cured on site, hence its succulent taste. Two meals, two pints of bitter and a glass of wine came to less than £30. What a fantastic bargain and the food was freshly cooked and obviously home-made.The staff are very friendly, attentive in an unobtrusive manner and seemed genuinely interested in our enjoyment of the lunchtime meal. Will definitely return but perhaps take the precaution of booking a table in advance. My wife and I arrived on time, a special table was assigned with our name on a reservation card and decorated with streamers, a candle and congratulations banner all in place. A nice start. Our meal was truly outstanding. I had lamb fillet, my wife a sirloin steak both cooked to a T supported by a good variety of vegetables. We had one sweet - two forks and spoons! The portions were very generous indeed attractively presented. The staff and waitresses are top notch at customer care at the counter and at tables. And it seemed, word spread about our 58th anniversary because one by one as they were able, all came and warmly congratulated us. The owner gave us complimentary drinks and made time to chat a little while too. I hardly need to say the restaurant was busy. This venue is outstanding and I recommend it 100%

All meals were of generous portions and my sister-in- law visiting from London especially enjoyed the lamb shank. We decided to have desserts and the raspberry and coconut pudding was to die for! Whilst finishing our wine we watched the chalk board being changed and have to comment, as we did to the lady concerned, about the speed and neatness which was impressive! There is no doubt we will look to our next visit, thank you.

We didn't receive the warmest of welcomes, we were ignored at the bar for about 5 minutes before we even got eye contact from the bar staff, we were then shown our table and everything was lovely. I got the roast turkey for under 10£ and received a huge portion, my boyfriend got the gammon that was also very generous and under a tenner too. The staff were very polite from then on and checked we were okay etc. Desserts were massive! Ordered just chocolate icecream and received about 5 scoops, plus cream, sprinkles, wafers etc, which was lovely. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and was very busy so must be popular. Apart from the edgey welcome, everything else was erfect and we will definitely come back.

A rather quaint and friendly pub with a huge list of meals available (including a variety of specials) all at decent prices. Service was incredibly quick and the food was very pleasant, nothing incredible, but there were no complaints. So basically all you would ask for in a country pub - I just wish I had more room to try one of their fine-sounding desserts!

Went there today and couldn't be more disappointed. Firstly it was a lovely sunny day and we chose to sit in the garden. I went in to order drinks and a card payment was demanded because we were in the garden, which almost implies people are assumed to be dishonest! Order half a BBQ chicken and friend order roast beef. All prices have recently gone up and these are now close to £10 each. Chicken was straight from freezer to deep fat fryer, yuck in a word. What should have been white breast was like a dark grey colour, the bones were all freezer burnt, the BBQ sauce was like a watered jelly, the meat had this taste of an indescribably taste that you could associate with the smell of a wet dog. Other meal the beef was small in portion, beef cut was burnt and very tough. Service was poor and the restaurant was very busy. Most annoying part to the visit was all the drinks in mini mixer bottles, so to get a decent size glass of coke you need 3X bottles at about £1.40 each. I can't see myself returning for a good year or so to allow for a new cook etc.

Having grown up in Arlington, I've known the Yew Tree all my life, but it had been about 3 years since I was last there for a meal when we came here yesterday for a friend's birthday. Simply as fantastic as ever. Generous servings of lovely home cooked food delivered to the table in surprisingly short time. I had the lasagne, which was delicious, followed by the very tasty snickers bar cheesecake. My friends also enjoyed their food. A lovely country pub, with a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff and owners. We plan to make regular trips out to the Yew Tree from now on. Just be aware that you really need to book in advance (as we did) to avoid disappointment. It may be in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere, but this is a popular place and deservedly so!

We had a wonderful roast dinner here great selection of vegetables all with a very home cooked feel the atmosphere is strange in the restaurant all needs updating the decor is like an old ladies house far too busy with trinkets and very quiet, I would return in the summer time if I could sit in the garden.

As a family we have been going to the yew tree for probably 20 years. We always return and are never disappointed. The landlord and his wife and just charming and we always get caught up talking about sri lanka and cricket. The food is large sized portions but you can ask them to make it a smaller portion if you cant bear wasting. The desserts are just fantastic. Book your table quick as the pub is always busy. The conservatory area is always popular. There is a nice garden area at the back with a few children's toys. We are sure to return again soon.

We visited the Yew Tree to have a meal and a few drinks. The pub sells Sam Smiths cider which was excellent and went down a treat. The lady who owns the pub is excellent company and couldn't do enough to make us welcome. I had fish and chips with mushy peas. The fish was delicious and was cooked in a tempura batter which made it crispy with no sogginess on the inside. I have decided that this pub will now be my local even though there are 5 establishments closer to where I live.

Wow, what a hidden gem. A lovely traditional pub. The food is excellent value and the staff are welcoming. The service is great. I went with a group and everyone enjoyed their meals. Try the fish and chips - the fish batter is perfect! I will definitely be going back soon for a second helping.

I haven't been to The Yew Tree for a few years but its still as good as I remembered. The food was very good, we only had a cheddar Ploughmans but there was a variety of food on the plate, it was well presented, possibly the tastiest Ploughmans I have had. The service was quick. The pub is always busy. We sat in the garden on this occasion which was very pleasant. The garden furniture is kept immaculately clean and they clean the tables when people leave. I would definitely recommend this pub but its probably a good idea to book. There is also plenty of parking.

Had not been here for a few years and was really pleased we made a detour to eat there late on Sunday 28 April. Husband had steak pie and I had the stuffed pork loin and it was really tasty. Well done Yew tree on maintaining the quality and ambience of the pub/restaurant!The pub retains its quaint English character and the sevice is always friendly, efficient and quick.

One of my favourite pubs to visit, often going out of my way to ensure I am passing, and can call in for a quick drink.Very homely pub, split into small rooms with a roaring fire during the winter months. A quality venue where by you can be assured that the clientele are of an appropriate drinking age and maturity for when you want a quiet drink, chat and (now) a bite to eat!Would definitely recommend...especially if you are a fan of Sam Smith's drinks.

Extremely expensive and a really bland and tasteless breakfast sandwich. Wouldn’t go again. Nice surroundings but really massively overpriced.
