We recently spent a week in Dunster with friends on a walking holiday. There were numerous places to eat in this fabulous town and we tried quite a few including the Yarn Market restaurant. We checked their website and noted that we had to book a table and pre-order our meals before 5pm....we were eating at 7pm. As we were passing in the afternoon we decided to pop in and order. The manager was contacted and when he arrived we were given the day's menu and all four chose Fish Pie and Vegetables with Plum Crumble with custard as a dessert. He needed to know as the meal could then be prepared. After a query regarding the Fish Pie he rang us later with an answer after checking with the Chef. Upon arriving at the Resaurant we were shown to our table by a scruffy looking member of staff wearing black rubber gloves and attire more suitable to DIY. Both the drinks and the main course arrived very quickly. The fish pie was pretty tasteless and the veg partly cooked and certainly did not look "locally sourced" Then before we had all finished another scruffy looking member of staff cleared the plates as each person finished their meal. No etiquette at all ! The Plum crumbles arrived immediately we had all finished our mains....top marks for speed of service there but maybe a liitle break would have been more appropriate. The plums were very tasty but then the game of hunt the crumble began. Apart from some chewy lumps of hard pastry there was no discernable crumble. We paid the overpriced bill and left to finish our evening at another establishment close by! After the intial friendly meeting with the manager we expected great things.....Wrong!! Compared to all the other restaurants in Dunster this was by far the worst experience both in the quality of the food and staff.

Had an evening meal at full restaurant price. The meals served would have been rated poor in a canteen. My wife ordered pork listed as being served with a special sauce. Expected roast pork etc. It came as a pork chop with a packeted pepper sauce. I had sea bass which seemed to have been boiled in a bag. The mixed vegetables were probably frozen. They certainly were not fresh ones which the price charged reflected.

We were staying in Minehead for a week and were struggling to find places to eat. We were pleased to be able to book in here, a few days ahead, as Dunster is beautiful. We were asked to let them know our choices ahead of time if possible, even though it was just 2 of us and our two children. I selected the steak but they could not tell me what the soup would be until the day so I decided to choose the starter on the day. When we arrived for dinner 3 days later nobody was at reception so I had to ring the bell after 10 minutes. The hotel was quiet which was not a good sign as all other restaurants in the area were busy. The service was pleasant but the food was shockingly bad. My wife had said she would have the soup, whatever it was, when she pre-ordered so she was told she had broccoli and Stilton soup. I said I would have the same. I was told I could not as I had not pre-ordered it. I said I did not like any of the other starters. After some hesitation from the waitress I was told they might be able to DEFROST another serving of broccoli and Stilton soup! We both had soup but it tasted suspiciously like a Tesco broccoli and Stilton soup with just a sprig of coriander put on top. Next came the mains. My daughter was served 4 of the cheapest quality chicken nuggets (worse than Mcdonalds) and my son was served a burnt pizza which appeared to be a frozen Chicago Town pizza which was so burnt he could not bite through it. I was served a small, adequate but bland rump steak with a bland salad of lettuce, cucumber and tomato. We were also served one small dish of chips to share between four of us and these were also burnt to the extent that every chip was hard and crispy all the way through without any fluffy potato left. I had to ask for the pizza and chips to be replaced. I was so shocked at the pizza that I asked if it was a frozen Chicago Town pizza. To my surprise they were at least honest enough to admit that it was. I cannot fathom how a frozen pizza comes to the table so burnt. The food was so poor we decided not to stay for dessert. It was clear the ingredients were cheap, the kitchen staff were not skilled and that they were skimping to save cost and avoid any possible waste whatsoever. We walked around the village afterwards and only wished we had booked into one of the smaller restaurants nearer the castle as they looked lovely. I hesitated to post this review because the staff did at least adjust our bill to reflect the poor food, without me needing to ask, but I feel that people should be aware of what this place is like. Had we have known we would not have wasted our time and money here as the food was worse than what I prepare at home.

The wine was wonderful and the whole experience made our stay in Dunster even more special - we had a few rude hotleliers saying that they were 'fully booked' - not so the Yarn Maket - so do give this unassuming little gem a chance.

We really appreciated the attentive and friendly servers at dinner last night. There are not many dinner options in Dunster so if you stay here a few days, you’re bound to try all of them if you go to a different place nightly. Just across from the old yarn market, this restaurant is found just through the front doors of the hotel. We started with a tomato basil soup which had a very homemade flavor. Our entree was a simple bean and vegetable chili served with white rice. The entree was ok, struck me as a bit plain. Perhaps an accompaniment of yogurt sauce might have helped the dish a bit. Still, tasty enough. Red wine was my dessert.

We visited the Yarn Restaurant after a day walking round Dunster castle and grounds ,so wanted a nice cup of tea a gentleman invited us in and was very friendly , we said that we didn't want a meal just some tea , we were shown round to the bar area where there were some nice comfy seats and were asked what we wanted we said that we wanted tea for 4 persons he asked wether we wanted some home made cake we said no thank you but he kept saying you may as well have some as it comes with the tea so we thought seeing as it came with the tea we would have it , the cake was ok nothing special, one piece looked like it had been hacked off with a blunt knife . we finished our tea and went to pay the bill should have been £12 for the teas but the gentleman tried to charge us £18 when we queried this he said that the cake was £6 extra even though he said on at least 3 occasions that it came with the Tea , we refused to pay the extra as we felt he was taking advantage of tourists and though we would pay and not argue the bill , he eventually just took £12 sad end to a lovely day.

Having visited Dunster on 31st December for the day on a short break to the area we were looking for a bite to eat. The Yarn Market Restaurant advertised light lunches on a board outside so we went in. We sat ourselves down. No staff were around initially and there were no menus. A few people were drinking coffees. Eventually a staff member appeared. We asked if we could see a lunch menu. The member of staff was most unhelpful and said she'd see if she could locate one, as if it was a strange thing for us to have asked for and rather an inconvenience. The restaurant was clean but sterile and had no atmosphere to speak of. We left and went to the Lutterell Arms across the road where there was plenty of choice and fantastic service.

The Yarn Market Restaurant is situated in the Yarn Mark Hotel in the centre of Dunster. The place itself is a little tired and dated, but we chose it having been in Dunster for the 'Dunster by Candlelight' festivities. The service was attentive and of a good standard, with the mains courses being a good portions. There were four of us dining, and we had the terrine, fish cakes and cumin soup for starter, which were all lovely, followed by either chicken breast of game pie, which were all delicious. The only let down for the evening was dessert which were very average.Ultimately though we had an enjoyable dinner prior to the candlelight procession outside, and were pleased with the overall experience.

The vegetables were fresh and cooked nicely too. The desserts were also very tasty, especially the bread and butter pudding. I have never written a review of anything on Tripadvisor before, but I feel compelled to do so after our experience at the Yarn Market Restaurant during 'Dunster by Candlelight' last week. My starter was a dry and unappetising salad for which I had to request a dressing. My main course was a rubbery slice of pork with two slices of tomato and a thick slab of congealed cheese on top. The boiled vegetables displayed the same lack of imagination and the potatoes, both boiled and 'roasted' (inverted commas mine) could not possibly have been fresh, but were almost certainly microwaved from frozen or heated up from earlier in the day. Like my starter, the main course was dry and difficult to swallow. Most insulting of all was the bill which charged gourmet restaurant prices for this third rate pub grub. I eat out a lot at a range of different restaurants, and I cannot remember a worse experience. Without question, the worst meal I have ever been served in a restaurant. This restaurant badly needs a new chef.

The website is very misleading as it makes the rooms look nice and modern, but ours was a bit grim and dated; nothing ‘deluxe’ about it. The shower was nice as it had been recently renovated. No soundproofing so you can hear literally everything in the other rooms. The TV was ancient and tiny. In-room coffee is instant only and we asked for oat milk when we booked and didn’t get it. Bed was ok but the pillows were uncomfortable. The carpet looked like it had been there for 50 years and needs replacing. Spa also needs to be upgraded - big hole in the floor of the steam room and the jacuzzi was closed (we weren’t told that at the time of booking). One pro is that it’s a good location - easy walk to shops and restaurants and the park.

The food was really good unfortunately the experience was let down by service. We sat in the restaurant and we could hear everything going on in the kitchen, not normally a problem but in this instance the waiting staff were being told to go and take orders, we'd been waiting 15 minutes in an empty pub! Then to add insult to injury we could hear a male belching loudly from the kitchen. This put us off the food that was delivered.... in short we have been here before and came back because we had a good meal, whether or not new staff or just a one off we would need to seriously consider if we return. Sorry as a big fan of supporting local pubs & businesses it goes against the grain but these days money is too hard earned not to say something!

We went for a weekend break to Dulverton and booked in for a late Sunday lunch at 1730. The food was fabulous. One of the staff told us that they cook in batches to ensure you have a fresh roast. We had to just give them the heads up the day before for our main. IT WAS THE BEST ROAST BEEF AND PORK BELLY we have had for a long time. The veg was out of this world and paired with an Exmoor Ale I was in heaven. A sweet later and a cheeseboard saw us into the first ever quiz night. Great fun! Lovely locals made us feel very welcome. A truly great British pub!
