having not been to the Woodmans for quite some time to eat, but many times to drink. Our “eating” experience was very disappointing from ordering the food to having it delivered to the table. The appearance alone followed by the flavour pallet was absolutely awful. To start the garlic bread was served on sourdough bread, the cheese overcooked and burnt & because it was served on sourdough bread, the flavour pallet was totally an utterly incompatible with the “garlic bread” Now referring to the visual impact of the garlic bread, once placed upon the plate and delivered the table. It resembled something that my dog would excrete after a really rather large meal & was totally & utterly un pleasing to the eye & smelt revolting. We now turn to the main course, my wife ordered Hunters chicken and again the visual impact on the plate was equally as bad as the garlic bread. It looked like something My daughter would’ve excreted in her nappy. When she was a baby the chicken breast was soggy. the bacon was overcooked & burnt, the sauce was bitter and the oval appearance was absolutely disgusting. My wife had one mouthful and that was enough I had the gammon which because it was so dry and overcooked the chef had to soak & smother it in maple syrup to give it a modicum of moisture, the texture and flavour, was utterly revolting. Upon requesting to speak to the Owner, who was in the bar & making himself very obvious to other customers, & also seeing the chef pop out & looking in our direction, I then requested to the server that I may speak to the Owner or the chef to discuss these matters, but neither of them had the courage to come and speak to me in regards to the above matters & I speak from a point of view of being the son of an Owner of a very successful pub for some 25 years, they didn’t have the courage of the convictions to come & speak to a customer about the revolting & disgusting food that they placed in front of us. Also to add insult to injury, they had the total and utter audacity to want to charge us for this revolting assault on our culinary and visual senses. The only plus point of the evening was the servicing staff, I can’t say that of the management they’re just cowardly, but the serving staff were utterly professional. Very kind, warm and welcoming.

Young enthusiastic team behind the bar and serving, but the menu is dull and boring after a few visits you will struggle to to choose, specials are ok but not anything really special and sometimes remain on the board for 2/3 weeks, pity there are no themed events especially around pay day weekends e.g end of month beginning of month. Could do with a review of main menu been the same for years, perhaps look at 4 menus so they change every 3 months, it’s just standard chili, lasagne, fish and chips, pie, burgers very old fashioned so it won’t draw in new trade for its food or help existing customers who want something a bit different.

Stayed at the Pub last night, booked in, which was quick and easy, had a couple of beers in the back bar, which for the middle of the afternoon had a few people in. We put the underfloor heating on, the room was nice and warm by the time we got back from the beers. Nice Hot shower, clean, tidy, nicely decorated, comfortable bed, room nice and quiet. Had a meal in the restaurant, the food was cooked well. My wife had fish and I had a Burger, which was home made and certainly not from some catering pack. The staff we saw when we arrived were different from those we saw at night, the following morning we had breakfast served by another member of staff, every one gave great service and were very friendly, and we were made to feel very welcome, all in all this is great little pub, real value for the money.

Arranged our visit for my sons 18th birthday meal. We stayed in one of the rooms at the back of the pub, very nice, very clean and comfortable. We had a table for five booked and when we arrived we were welcomed very pleasantly. They even decorated the table and part of the walls with birthday bunting. Thoughtful touch. Food was absolutely fantastic, all 5 stomachs content and happy. Prices were very reasonable for the standard of food and service. Staff were friendly, polite and attentive. Ethan the waiter, couldn't have been any better. Breakfast was nice and light instead of a heavy cooked meal which made for a nice change. Overall we had a lovely stay and will certainly return. Thanks to all the staff! :). Jan and Richard

A straightforward pub menu, extremely well executed. I chose prawn cocktail with ciabatta, (a great alternative to brown bread ) followed by a vegetarian tart with sweet potato fries. My partner had pate which he declared was the best he had ever tasted, followed by a perfectly cooked medium rare, tender steak. Very competitively priced. Well done!

We decided to have an evening pub meal and chose this pub which is fairly local but have not used before. On walking into the pub we were given a warm welcome, we were served almost immediately with drinks and then we sat down at a table to look at the menu. Some of the special items were not available as it was just after the Bank Holiday weekend but what we chose from the main menu was wholesome a filling (Chili con carne and a sirloin steak) we were naughty and had a dessert we shared an ice cream which was full of flavor. The atmosphere was friendly, conversation as the bar was a bit loud but jovial will definitely be returning

We booked a table for a family meal thinking the place looked nice from the outside........WRONG!!!We had to wait 10minutes at our table for a waitress to take our drinks order.Shortly after we ordered our mains.....45 minutes later the food arrived, well 4 of the 6 dishes did...a further 10mins later we had our fulll compliment..... however the 2 lasagnes ordered looked like a dogs dinner and tasted worse. The waitresses had no interest in being there and the service proved it...so much so they ignored our order for a second round of drinks. When the bill came it was unsurprisingly wong. All in all a digusting meal served with disgusting service. One country pub to miss!!!!

Have lived in the village for 7 years and this is the first time we've tried lunch at the Woodman's - but it certainly won't be the last. We both ordered the beer battered cod which was freshly cooked and came piping hot on a very generously loaded plate. Best of all, it was delicious! No room for dessert so I can't comment on that, but the service was extremely friendly, welcoming and relaxed and the atmosphere was cosy. They've also recently converted some spare space into four extremely comfortable and well-equipped rooms which come highly recommended by our friend who stayed the night (this is what finally lured us into the pub). If you're looking for a friendly village pub or a place to stay, the Woodman's is ideal.

I booked The Woodman's Cottage for a group of 20 following an evening at Fens Falconry nearby. They agreed a group price, which was good, for Steak & Ale pie, mash & vegetables. Arrived a few minutes before the time booked, got a drink, went to our table and the food arrived promptly. We all agreed it was excellent, clearly a home made pie, full of tender meat, peas and glazed carrot & parsnip & mash. Tasty & filling. A few people had deserts and one group shared an excellent cheese board. Cannot fault the service or the food and value for money - well done! Only negative was that the real ale was a bit too cool (it's not lager!!)

We ordered our food, Cheese burger & chips, The Salmon, Steak pie and gammon. It was sometime before our food arrived and as the place wasn’t busy you knew it was prepared and cooked fresh. All I can say is it was delicious and all of us cleared our plates. 2 of the group also had room for dessert in the for of treacle sponge with custard and the cheesecake both of which went down a treat. We wondered if they served Sunday roast and spotted on our way out a banner stating that they do Sunday carvery”s between 12 & 3pm so we will definitely be trying this soon. Could not get a table at West End (our regular Sunday lunch choice).Rang The Woodmans and booked a table. Good phone manner.A bit surprised/disappointed that the place was pretty empty, but met a local couple well know to us who, once again sang it's praise. Also met a couple of other people known from the past.Well done to all who have brought it back to life, used it often many years ago.Lovely place now, Sunday roast was very good (down side was all a little (inc plates) cool).Apart from the 'coolness', my wife rated the turkey as good as any she has ever had.Excellent meat, presume Gagens?Good portions and all in all a very good meal.A little concerned that the 'kids eat free' will deter many people. We sat in the main dining room, ours and one other table had 'older people', the other two tables had 3 and 4 children (all pretty well behaved I must add).Perhaps a segregated area?Service pretty good, but a few smiles from chap behind the bar (landlord?) and lady carving meat would help enormously.Landlady, after a lack of 'brightness' soon became much more 'smiley'.Any restaurant/pub survives/thrives on it's food of course but also on the 'hosts', remember Barry and Lucille.Sorry to our hosts for such an in depth report, but would you have it any other way.Definitely in top 5 locally for Sunday Lunch and other menu options look to be very good, will be back.

My brother, who has lived in Vancouver for decades, was on a short visit and wanted a proper pub lunch. Our first choices either did not serve food at lunchtime or were closed [temporarily or permanently] and we "ended up at" The Woodman's Cottage. I had, obviously, heard a lot about the place over the years but had never been there before. Perhaps I should listen to people more! When we arrived, we did not have high expectations because the car park was empty - on a Saturday lunchtime - but the weather was dreadful for June. The place was empty but we were assured that they were happy to serve us lunch. Although the tables in the main restaurant were set up, it was suggested that one was set up for us out the back where the heating was on. We agreed to take warmth over ambiance - oh, the joys of an English June!Service was strangely slow to start with [setting up the table, first drinks, getting menus] but it was probably because the landlord called in staff just for us. Once they arrived, service was just right for us.We ordered a selection of starters to share: Chicken Wings, Garlic Mushrooms and Beef Nachos. Wow! We were chatting away and suddenly the conversation was just about the great food. The mushrooms were nothing special but the wings and nachos were fantastic. For mains, my husband and brother had the T-bone and mixed grill while Mum and I both had the lasagne. All were enjoyable if not as great as the starters. I cannot remember what everyone had for desert but that is probably because I had the one with lots of chocolate and was far too distracted to notice! My husband and I have already said that we should make a point of visiting the Woodman's more often.

Just a shame the heating wasn't on as it was cold and I had to keep my coat on. Would go back for the food.

We had good reviews so booked table for lunch. Turned up at 1pm for lunch. No point in booking the pub was empty. In fact only one other couple arrived and left before us. Friendly meeting on arrival and obviously no issue with where to sit. There are plenty of tables. Good selection of beers and drinks. The lunch menu contained various starters. Main courses mostly ciabattas, paninis, burgers, scampi, cottage pie (special!) and breakfasts. We ordered a plain burger, a full breakfast, cottage pie and chicken burger. The burger and chips was very basic with limited garnish. The cottage pie could have come from Iceland, the chicken in the burger was anaemic and the breakfast was ok. The meals were really nothing special. There was no offer of sauces etc and the server disappeared after leaving the meals. Two of us then ordered a sweet. Neither felt it was worth the cost. So all in all we have decided that we may have visited on an exceptional quiet day or the pub is less than busy normally at lunch time. The location itself is unattractive and we won't return.

Welcoming friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and the food was delicious and beautifully presented! You will struggle to find food such as this in the Wisbech area. We will definitely be returning!

My wife and I began using this pub/restaurant earlier this year, and found it had excellent food, and very welcoming staff. During early August, the Woodman's Cottage advertised a fine dining evening, which we went to on 14th August, it was fantastic. The price included 4 courses and wine, which was of very good quality. Everyone had a fantastic evening, and we cannot wait for them to repeat the evening.

Cosy feel, polite service and some tasty and rather posh grub! Take a look at the look of the pictures and cast your own opinion. The log burner is great too

I thought I visit here with my family because of the good reviews. We phoned to book and turned up at the time we said we was coming. We entered the pub to no greeting so we waited at the bar while the staff chatted with the locals. Then after a couples of minutes we gave the name of the reservation then told we can sit where we wanted, we ask where we order to be told that it is carvery only which was fine then after a couple of minutes they asked if we wanted any drinks which we said yes then we was told to go up to the carvery when every we wanted but wasn't told where the carvery was. We found the carvery to find out the selection where the young chef told us that the meat was gammon, pork or turkey. we asked for one slice of each apart from my mother who asked for gammon then we saw the selection of vegetables which was; broccoli, carrots, parsnips, cauliflower cheese, mash, and 'roast potatoes'. There was other extra like stuffing, sausages, Yorkshire puddings and gravy. I was a little worried that they had not allergy advice for the food because I'm allergic to apples but i thought that it should be okay i can get my parents and the staff was obversely not interested in us so i asked my father to try the food to see if it had any apples in it. The food wasn't great the mash potatoes was very lumpy and every fork full had lumps in it the other food was overcooked and disappointing and it wasn't great value. i would not visit again.

We went to this restaurant for an evening meal for two. We had the ribeye steak, chicken stir fry, fruit tart and fruit waffles. The service was friendly and the portions were generous. Food was a good standard. We would dine there again.

We happened on this pub by accident and went in in a very quiet Friday afternoon for a drink. The landlady is lovely and made us very welcome. We read the menus on the blackboards and decided to book a table for dinner. We were not disappointed!! The food (cooked by her husband) was delicious: all cooked to order so beautifully hot and well presented. The menu was not huge (which assured us everything would be fresh) but big enough to make it difficult to decide what to have. Three of us ordered from the specials whilst one had a gammon steak from the grill menu. We barely had room for dessert - but, luckily, forced ourselves and had four super home made puds. The pub is beautifully clean, toilets well appointed and, as mentioned, a welcoming landlady, with a lovely Dutch accent. The slightest criticism was that there was only one variety if red wine on offer. Luckily it was Merlot, so the men were able to cope! When we go this way again we will definitely re-visit. Highly recommended
