The food was good but the service abrupt and the atmosphere poor. A Saturday evening family meal and when we arrived at 7:30 only three other tables were taken. When we finished our main meal we were the only ones left. The landlord clearly wanted to close as he lowered the lights. It was only 9pm but we didn't feel welcome so left. A strange way to run a business - we won't be in a hurry to return .

Rude and aggressive staff and management. Quiet group of ladies having a reunion causing no problems but asked to leave as he wanted to shut the pub -even after telling us they only close if there are no customers. His excuse was ridiculous and we couldn’t even check it out as the other party had left.

Very rude aggressive owner and staff. As a group of six LADIES 60+ , meeting up for a reunion and light lunch. Being asked to leave for no apparent reason other than they wanted to close as no other customers (I wonder why???) Do read other reviews before booking this place. There is a certain pattern. Group of 6 ladies out for a school reunion after 50+ years. Pub was empty so we sat in the garden where there was a larger group of younger women also sat. We were never told we couldn’t sit where we did or asked to move. We had light lunches which were quite nice and also soft drinks. Didn’t notice the larger party leave, but didn’t want desserts just another round of drinks. A few minutes later the landlord appeared. He was very rude and aggressive towards us and said we had encroached on the other party’s space and that they had complained and with that in mind asked us to pay up and leave. The other group were friendly towards us so truth be known, the place was empty and the Landlord just wanted us out because he wasn’t making any money out of us. At 60+ years I have never been thrown out of anywhere! I just wished I’d have read some of the other comments on here before booking. AVOID - you have been warned!

I honestly believe that the act of depriving a customer of the pastry at the base and sides of a pie should be worthy of the death penalty. If you are selling casserole/stew with a pastry lid, then please say that on the menu. Otherwise my visit was wonderful. A fantastic venue with wonderful attentive staff and great food. Just make a proper pie...

The Woodman is our all time favourite and we keep on going back. The food is absolutely first class and this restaurant/pub is the best in miles and miles. I had the special (tuna steak) and the filet is always a classic. My husband adored the desert, which all competed in appeal. It keeps the balance of sophistication and warmth right and the owners go that extra mile to make it a real 5 star experience - thank you to the team. We’ll be back again soon :)

I entertained the Family for dinner on Saturday. My daughter happened to comment to the owner that she felt the child Pizza was not value for money and was very dry and a poor quality bought in product, his whole attitude changed in split second, saying what do you expect hand crafted pizza's. She replied just maybe some toppings to avoid it drying up so much and make it look more attractive. From there on his whole attitude towards us frosty to say the least to the extent that we did not stay for desserts paid the bill and left. Will certainly think twice before visiting again.

We have dined in this pub multiple times and usually had a good experience. However after the rudeness by the owner on Saturday evening I am going to think twice about returning with my family! The lady who initially took us to the table and the female owner at the start of our meal were very accommodating. However when the children’s meals arrived the pizza produced was appalling. It was a cheap frozen pizza which was over cooked. This we were charged £8.50 for! My son who normally eats everything said he really did not like the pizza and shared his older brother’s meal along with bits off our plate. I ordered the fish and unfortunately this too was very poor quality and over cooked! Thankfully the other meals were fine. Unfortunately it was the male French owner who cleared our table. I attempted to mention to him about the poor quality of the pizza and it was not value for money. He snapped back in an aggressive tone “ you expected to have a home made pizza” I tried to explain I am ok with frozen products but I do expect a little bit imagination of maybe some extra cheese for example to stop it drying out. I was polite but pointed out it was not value for money. He turned round and said “no one else has complained and stormed off” We were quite taken back by his attitude and had we not already promised the boys an ice cream we would have left again the French owner appeared and I asked one scoop of strawberry ice cream for the boys. Again I got the reply of “one scoop is all we do anyway” due to the way we were treated no desserts were ordered for the adults. I wish now upon paying no we had stood our ground and refused to pay for children’s pizza. It is such as shame that what was such a nice a pub is now giving clients such a frosty reception. I won’t be eating there again as a family!

Well we arrived and thought that with this many cars, the service might not be that good. Well, it seems the volume of cars shows that the food must be good. Service was great, nice little welcome and finishing touch to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Pleasant surroundings and everyone seemed to be enjoying. Only 3 staff and they were clearly good at what they do. We had Brie and Garlic Mushrooms to start and these wee great. My wife had the special of Pork Fillet (and she isn't really a great pork eater) but she said it was fantastic I had ribeye steak, chunky chips and peppercorn source, the steak was absolutely spot in, you could taste the grill, which made it 😋. For desert a French apple tart and cream, and lemon tart and lemon crunch ice cream. 2 pints and a half for under £90. Spot on! We certainly will be back

Always a good sign when the car park is full mid week. This feels like its in the middle of nowhere and it feels like you are stepping back in time when you walk in. I couldnt quite make out whether it was olde-worlde or just a bit tired but that kind of added to the charm. The menu is fairly straight forward, not hundreds of choices but a good enough array. Specials evenings are run a few times a week. Service was great, friendly and quick. Then the food, the most basic of dishes was just elevated to another level, this is fancy cooking, its just really great wholesome food, flavoursome. Its not cheap, but i would class as great value for money. I'll be back for sure

I don't write this lightly, but this place serves quite possibly the best gastro-pub food in the county. Looks quite small from the front but inside it's bright and roomy, clearly recently refurbished. The chef is excellent; the lamb and duck in particular fall off the bone and melt in the mouth. They also have classic grub such as a range of burgers and pies on different days of the week. The puddings are decadent (the gelato cake is to die for) and they also serve cocktails for those that fancy a liquid dessert. Absolutely no complaints whatsoever. Been twice already and will no doubt go again soon!

Great shame……..this once great pub for a family meal has gone downhill. Bad roast, bad alternative options. This could be understood as we booked for 3.30pm on a Sunday and some may say at that time we cannot expect the best roast BUT what cannot be excused is the rude attitude of the owners when politely giving feedback about the awful food! Aggressive and not willing to listen! AVOID unless you enjoy dry, badly cooked roast, bloody awful Caesar Salad that was 90% dressing and BAD owner attitude!

What a shame…. I have made two previous trips to the Woodman Inn this year (2023) and both have been OK, nothing special, just OK. We went today and parts of the food was salty (not to our liking) which happens, we cannot be pleased all the time. Initially we were very polite but the OWNER disagreed with us and was rude to us which was a surprise to start with. We were totally amazed when he later brought over an empty plate of what I had saying other people (there was 1) enjoyed what they had. This is the point I lost the plot, I have to say. This could have had such a different ending (we were not asked to pay for the food) if it was handled in a different way. I have tried to give both sides of the story but to be told your opinion does not matter is hard to accept as a paying customer. Sadly I will not return to this place as long as the owner is there, it is such a shame because it is local and we like to support local businesses.

Drove through Fernham on the way home from Faringdon at 9:15pm on a Wednesday with my parents; had decided to stop for a pint on the way home from a curry. As we drove into Fernham, The Woodman was lit up like Crystal Palace, every light on, the sign illuminated and the pub looked welcoming. Door was open so we strolled inside. We were then met by a man, who I assumed worked there, who informed us “the pub is closed”. No explanation, just closed. I have sympathy for so many pubs that are struggling through these hard times, however not being open when you say you are, is unforgivable. Why are you closed and turning away business?? I don’t get it. I won’t return whilst these owners are in occupation here.

The Woodman was a lovely pub 20 mins walk from the campsite we were staying at. We walked there on day 1 for a drink and the owner kindly agreed to let us watch the FA cup final there as we had a meal and drinks the following day. We sat outside for our food which was a range from the kids' menus to lamb shank, fishcake and fab chunky chips - all delicious. The set up around Covid felt safe and well thought through. The food has been excellent when we’ve been here previously but this time it was disappointing. There were four of us - one steak was tough and gristly, the spinach and ricotta lasagne was somewhat bland, one of our party asked for lamb chop and received lamb shank - perhaps the waitress misheard? For dessert, three of us had crème brûlée but it had the wrong consistency, more like a blancmange and we wondered if it was made with a mix rather than cream and eggs. Not very nice. The ice cream that the remaining person in our party had was delicious.

We drove out to The Woodman as we fancied something a bit special and have always liked the atmosphere here. It was fairly quiet when we arrived (7 on a Saturday) but got busy soon after.Drink orders were taken immediately. She tried to take food orders very quickly after - we asked for more time. There was something wrong with the beer - checked by someone else and we had a shandy (not the local ale we'd ordered) - no problem. My husband ordered "The Special" = £15 Rump (not great), sauce and chips but were sad to find that it came as just as that with not a tomato or salad-dressing in sight. There are other reviews mentioning this and people are directed to the small print on the menu - the problem is that our waitress was very quick in taking our order - not very communicative (or smily!) and did not ask whether we'd like to order any side salads etc. It would be thoughtful to highlight the issue to customers! I had the "confit of duck in red wine jus" that I've had before but sadly skin was soggy (think it crispy before?) and the sauce was not tasty as I remember it - more like a gravyAs soon as we'd finished the waitress wanted to take our pudding order - again asked for a gap. We literally could have been in and out within 45 minutes! We ended up feeling rushed, the meal was not up to the usual standard (perhaps an off-night) and it lacked the relaxed experience we've always enjoyed here. Also wonder why there seemed to be a "steak night special" on a Saturday night as they are usually mid-week round here? Perhaps to bring in numbers?Wont be dashing back in a hurry - shame

Food and Sunday lunch has always been very good here, however today the meat was thin and bland, Yorkshire puddings tasteless and the roast potatoes clearly reheated - hard and dehydrated. If this was Wetherspoon’s at £8 then it would be OK, but £15 - not OK. New chef or perhaps they are not bothered anymore, Won’t go back again for Sunday Lunch or indeed any daily lunch or steak nights, Not worth the risk at this price. The menu was ok if a little pricey. The service was friendly, not rushed and helpful. (But might have been less so if there had been more diners) The food was niceley presented, well cooked and appetising. What really spoiled the occasion was that mayonnaise requested was served in a plastiic manufacturer's bottle and appeared on the bill at a charge of £2. Condiments are in our experience included in the meal price and mayonnaise is served in a dish. Halloumi cheese advertised with salad (garnish?) was served with a full side salad, not consciously ordered, at a charge of £3.50. So when the card payment machine requested a tip we declined as we felt we had overcharged.

If you are not local to the area you would never know this pub existed. Located in a tiny village in Oxford this pub has been extended significantly since it started as a hostelry back in the 1600's. This historic building has been tastefully renovated to retain much of its historic architectural features, but make it welcoming and comfortable venue to have a night out, whether you just be stopping by for a pint of well kept real ale, or sitting down for a meal.

We booked this at the last moment purely because we were given the impression there were vegetarian options for one of our group.

We had lunch in the Woodman on our way to visit Buscot Park. It’s a quaint little pub with interesting features on the walls, spotlessly clean & very friendly staff.

We called in for lunch on spec on a wet Thursday. I knew of the pub as I grew up in the village many, many years ago. We were driving home and decided to take a trip down memory lane. We had our 3 year old granddaughter with us and were immediately made welcome at our table as pens and a colouring book arrived. I think they were intended for our granddaughter but we all joined in. We ordered typical lunchtime fare which arrived promptly, was freshly cooked and delicious. The ham part of my ham egg and chips was particularly noteworthy. The owner took time to chat and introduced us to the pub dog Peanut. He was happy to show me round when I mentioned my connection with the village.

Been looking to visit since moving to Stanford in the Vale and this was well worth the wait. Lovely pub with good food and excellent service. Scored 5 as for honest, fresh and tasty pub grub, well presented and served efficiently this was top draw. Good range of beer too. Busy Saturday lunch but prompt service at all times. Fantastic Steak & Ale Pie, really good fish and nice selection of starters and desserts. Saw sandwiches and ploughman's which looked very good for next lunch visit. Will try an evening visit next time and there will be more "next times" I'm sure.

Car park empty, very worried but as grand-daughter chose venue thought will give it a try, so ordered food, to our surprise meal was served very quickly too quick in fact. It was terrible the vegetables were awful, we made the best of it paid up and left. So never again.

Having driven past this pub a couple of weeks earlier and liked the look of it, we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed - a super meal, the highlight for me being the meringue and chocolate gelato with chocolate sauce and raspberries! The pub itself is delightful and the staff friendly and helpful. There is a large converted barn suitable for functions - I nipped in a couple of times to see how Chelsea were getting on in the FA Cup! We will definitely be going back.

Last minute choice but glad to have found this friendly and welcoming pub restaurant. Our starters were soup of the day (Potato and Cauliflower) and the garlic prawns. Mains were the Duo of Pork and the Lamb Shank. Large portions and well cooked. Staff were attentive without being intrusive. Would certainly recommend the Woodman Inn and will return when back in the area.

We met friends for dinner here on a Saturday evening. Our first challenge was the car park- bring your smallest car. Food was good but nothing amazing. Service was very efficient - just lacking in warmth. Just left me a bit ...underwhelmed.

Absolutely loved my visit to the Woodman Inn. The restaurant is warming and gives a very cosy feeling, it was fascinating looking at the traditional interior and decor whilst we waited. The menu was on the smaller side but everything we had was amazing. I had the goats cheese bruschetta starter and spinach and ricotta lasagne for main. My boyfriend chose scallops from the specials menu, which he said was perfection, and fish and chips for main, which he also said was great. The portion sizes were great and the quality of the food was amazing. The service is friendly but also professional, really welcoming, lovely staff! The drinks menu is great too, with lots of options available, and also an amazing cocktail menu which I must come back and try!!!!!

We had lunch here with friends. The pub is cosy and friendly with a log fire. It has a good range of real ales, and the food is outstanding. I had a beef and ale pie which was enormous, packed with meat and pastry as light as a feather, all accompanied with a range of fresh vegetables. Our friends had the steak, which was expertly cooked - it’s well worth visiting here on a steak night. There is loads of parking, and the quality of the food makes it well worth the trip out of Oxford!

We have eaten many times since this iconic old inn was taken over by the lovely family who now run it so well. They have transformed the dining experience by creating a relaxed yet highly efficient service of really good quality food, and excellent beers and wines, all at reasonable prices.

Our visit to the Woodman was a present so we didn't get to choose the venue. The choice couldn't have been better. We had a super table by a lovely crackling log fire: There was a good choice of cask beer and fine wines and a good diverse menu. After a light starter of sourdough bread, balsamic and olive oil, we had swordfish steak , beautifully cooked and served with new potatoes, french beans, sweet baby carrots and topped with crisped parsnip.

Great food in generous portions at a respectable price, plus a choice of boutique and mainstream beers and ales. All in a warm traditional pub setting.
