Excellent service from Lewis and great food. Well recommended !!

Haven't commented on rooms as we didn't stay. The food was fantastic, the service was brilliant and the prices were very reasonable. Lovely atmosphere & decor, even the ladies toilets. Ample car-parking spaces across the road. Came here for my Dad's 89th birthday as he loves the place. Definitely recommend. (November 2024)

Booked a Sunday lunch for a family birthday, very friendly welcome we felt like regulars in fact it was our first visit, wonderful lunch (reccomend the trio of meats) with friendly quick service without being rushed at all. We felt the while experience represented good value and high quality in a relaxed setting

Pleasant country hotel with lots of free parking. Warm and friendly very helpful & attentive staff. Rooms clean,warm but rather tired in some areas. Excellent choice on menu and well prepared food. Served well by Ryan,Lewis & Simon. This was our 4th time here, wouldn't go anywhere else when we regularly visit Oxford.

Just on the spur of the moment we booked in for Sunday Lunch. We were warmly welcomed and our roast pork lunch was excellent value and really tasty. We were very impressed with the service we received. Ellie, who served us was friendly and ultra efficient; nothing was too much trouble. We hadn't visited the Dog House in a while, but based on our experience today we'll definitely be back!

The food was incredible, Everything was cooked to perfection and super tasty, My whole family had clean plates! We had excellent service too! Our table was looked after by Ellie, Sammy, Ella, Eloise and Eleanor! Thank you for the amazing experience.

We spotted off for a bite to eat on our travels and was able to grab a table for the two of us. We were told upon being sat there would be a bit of wait for food - but it didn’t even feel like we waited long at all! Service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the Steak sandwich and it was beautiful - steak cooked exactly how i asked!

Fantastic service especially at Breakfast time and looked after by Andrew and James. Perfect poached eggs!

Normally enjoy our visits here but left very disappointed on this occasion. My beer was particularly poor, long wait for food, (roasts) were very poor, beef was tough and chewy and veg consisted of some watery stringy cabbage and two minute pieces of parsnip that you could barely see. Potatoes were poor quality and undercooked and both they and the Yorkshire puddings were all dried up. There was no carrots,peas , broccoli and the gravy was virtually non existent. I have had a much better drink, meal and service in my local wetherspoons for half the price

Popped in to have dinner without a booking and managed to get a table which was fab. The food was delicious, massive portions. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Great service. Would definitely recommend and will be back again. Thank you :)

Really cosy pub, lovely food, with wonderful staff. Steve & Katie could not have made us more welcome. We met old friends and spent six hours eating and drinking in gorgeous ambience. Ronnie doggy loved it too - especially the doggy treat and chicken xx thanks for having us xx

Well, what an absolute pleasure to stop at the Dog House, which we celebrated my friend birthday & went to the Gauge 1 AGM. The staff were all young & absolutely fabulous. So helpful, nothing too much trouble. Rooms are a bit tired but clean & everything you need for a night away. The food was beautiful. Everything was severed nicely. Great menu lots to choose from & the puddings were delish. It's definitely worth going.

Visited again for a birthday meal for the first time post-Covid. While the decor and menu has changed - and I think also the ownership? - the Dog House remains a delight. Food is fantastic and if anything the service is even better than in my previous review.

Hotel Stay Absolutely lovely place. Such a friendly warm atmosphere. Food is amazing. All the staff are lovely. A special thank you to Steve and Emma who went way beyond and above to help me with an accommodation problem. Honestly I can’t express how kind and helpful they were and how much it’s appreciated. It’s my two dogs first trip to a hotel and they’ve been made very welcome. 100% dog friendly. We would definitely come back in fact we would like to move in 😜

We went here for lunch as a family group of seven. Our first visit, and we will certainly return. My daughter is vegan and gluten free so it’s quite difficult to find places to eat that cater for both. No problems here… quite a few options available. Everyone enjoyed their food and it was served with a smile, hot and nicely presented. I can recommend the home made fish cake ; the nicest I have tasted. The staff made us very welcome, and the service was friendly and attentive without being overly so. We enjoyed a lovely lunch together, so a big thanks to the staff team. Go and visit and you won’t be disappointed.

we visit every 3 months as a group of friends, steve and his team always look after us well, its well organised and the food is always fantastic. this time around i had squid and bangers and mash and it was very good. i have visited a few times with my wifr normally on a sunday and find the roast dinners to be very good. it really is good to have such a great pub close by. shout out to simon who is always speedy on the bar. this time helped out by steve.

Got told we had to have booked and they didn't have a table, then some people just walked in and given a table and they hadn't book either, Staff very rude, They looked down their noses at us, they gave me the feeling that I couldn't afford to be there... my advise don't judge someone by their looks... then we got told it was card only.. at that point we left... CASH IS KING

Popped in for an impromptu lunch, to find the place busy. We were met by lovely staff, so we decided to stay for a drink and crisps. The staff then came to us and said they could squeeze us in, and we weren't disappointed. Great food, great service and a wonderful experience. We will definitely come back, and also bring people with us next time. Thank you The Dog House.

Great place to stay. Rooms were clean and comfortable and the food excellent especially the freshly cooked breakfast. Simon was a star and provided my colleague and I with first class service. Thoroughly recommended.

It is more like a traditional pub & restaurant with some rooms, but a very nice place with an extremely polite service-team. I did enjoy the stay there more than in the big common hotels I was used to. The food was very good.

Our room was comfortable and clean, the meals were served hot, well presented and tasty. There's a good choice of drinks and a very competitive wine list. The staff were helpful, friendly and attentive. We hope to visit the Dog House again in the future.

We had dinner Sunday 23rd june after looking for a nice place to eat. We are not from the area but were staying with friends and wanted a bite to eat before heading home. We were served by a lovely, bubbly young lady called Ella. The food was great and quick (but not "too" quick), we loved the atmosphere of the place and while it was busy it didn't feel too crowded. Ella was great at recommending choices from the menu for us and was very attentive throughout. The facilities were clean and the garden was lovely. We will return when we come back next year. Thanks.

My family and I visited the Dog House last weekend for Father’s Day. We were served by Ellie, who provided a 5 star customer service and was attentive, friendly and polite throughout our visit. We all had a 3 course set menu which was amazing..generous portions! I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

We live locally and keep giving the Doghouse a go in the hope its a better experience but always leave let down. Glorious evening yet you cant eat outside so we ordered at the bar (which was initially ordered wrong) and were asked to keep popping in to see if the food was ready so we could be placed inside. When the food was ready we were asked to sit near to where two staff were sat on the floor sorting out glasses when the whole restaurant was empty. Food arrived and was missing part of the main so we waited for that to arrive. We ate, got up to leave and walked passed a number of staff who didnt breakaway from their chat and left. We just never feel special or at the least feel a valued customer. Sorry but with other places locally must more attentive i doubt we'll be back.

Went for our 20th wedding anniversary. Service and food were amazing. Staff were very attentive and to top it all off they gave us an anniversary card. Highly recommend and will be going back again!

Was a bit disappointed when we went on Farther’s day. The pub it self is nice, great gardens for kids to run around in. The service was good but the food was very budget. Frozen roast potatoes and not quality ones at that, was really disappointing when you are looking forward to Sunday roast at a pub!

Typical rural cottage in the middle of the English countryside not even half an hour from Oxford. Dinner and breakfast in the hotel's pub are also excellent. Highly recommended

Really enjoyed staying at the Dog House and made to feel really welcome. Big thanks to everyone there especially Simon and Patty for they’re hospitality and all round friendliness!

Slow service on both occasions we visited across 2 weeks, though the staff were kind about this and knocked the puddings off the meal cost. Don’t order the grilled sea bass (£17.49) as the portion was smaller than the kids meals. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.

Staff very friendly and accommodating , Andrew very welcoming at breakfast. James the chef provided lovely meals with fresh ingredients. Would recommend.

Pleasant staff, good food, good rooms

We’re locals (Abingdon) and have been here a few times. We went there on bank holiday Monday for a few drinks and bar snacks, the staff were really kind, and service was great. We’ve got a two year old that the bar staff engaged with and chatted to as she walked around the bar area. The atmosphere is really good. Without asking, the gentleman who was behind the bar brought over strawberries, raspberries and colouring activities - great guy. Highly recommend visiting.

Food was frozen and bland. Atmosphere was good and staff were nice but don’t come for a pub lunch.

Lovely, welcoming pub where we had lunch . It was very accommodating for my small grandchildren and the food was excellent. Did not use the hotel so cannot comment but I imagine it would have been just as welcoming

Lovely place, nice location out the way from the main hustle and bustle to give it more of a homely rustic feel. Personally much better than the chains who don't really care all that much about your experience. Super friendly Andrew really looked after the patrons at breakfast. It was clear Andrew really cares and he could teach people a lot about what good customer service looks like! Chef James did an excellent job with the cooked breakfast. It was obvious they use fresh quality ingredients. I only wish I wasn't watching my weight and could have eaten more!! Definitely recommend if you are looking to stay in the area.

One Night stay from a day out which was located nearby, room seemed substantial enough, although bed was a little uncomfortable, woke up with sore neck, breakfast service was fast and very nice, our waiter was very friendly and welcoming (staff were Andrew and Steve).

We stayed at this hotel because of its location to places we wanted to visit. Steve and his team were very welcoming and helpful for the duration of our stay. The breakfasts was excellent, we opted for full English which was delicious and plentiful. There was also a choice of cereals, fruit, yogurts and pastries. The rooms were comfortable and in keeping with the building and were very clean and refreshed daily. The evening meals were very nice with a good choice and also a specials board and also a good selection of drinks. We would definitely return to this hotel again when visiting the area.

The staff was so friendly and super helpful bringing us our son’s birthday cake when we needed it and making us feel like nothing was a problem. Shannon and Ella were fab! Thank you

Stopped here on way home from working near this location. We got to the bar which was not to busy, there was a few people there after a funeral for a wake. The person behind the bar refused to serve us as there was a wake on, even though nobody was at the bar. Wouldn't have friends go here even for my wake, absolutely the worst and rudest staff I have ever come across. Avoid like the covid Jab.

We arrived on Sunday 17th March, for Our Anniversary, we were welcomed by a Lovely Lady , given our room key and booked a table for Dinner… as the food smelt delicious!. It didn’t Disappoint either!. The next morning we went down for Breakfast and we were welcomed by “ Andrew”, His Service was Top Notch !, as was Our breakfast , cooked by “James” The Chef, we really enjoyed Our relaxing break and would Highly Recommended this Hotel .

Visited today for lunch and found it excellent. Very good service, prompt delivery of food from friendly staff. Nothing too much trouble. Prices were much lower than many other pubs nearby. Two courses each for two people, plus drinks, £47! Payment was accepted by card or cash. Service charge not included but we were advised that a tip could be added on my card payment, which I did. Used the accessible toilet which was spotless with all requirements for disabled and baby changing facilities. We'll be going again!!

Went to the Doghouse today to celebrate Mothers Day with the 3 course special menu. There was 11 of us and I must say that I was really impressed from start to finish. Staff so friendly and helpful and table set beautifully. All 2 courses for the 11 of us came out hot and were delicious. The puddings were presented so well and not a crumb was left. Would definitely recommend and cant thank Sammy and Steve enough for making it a lovely Mothers day for all.

Had a lovely lunch today, myself and 2 friends, one in a wheelchair. Very good wheelchair access and plenty of space around tables. Small but good gluten free menu for me, but good well priced menu for the others. Lovely small desert choice with our coffee. With very pleasant staff, all in all a very happy experience.

Had an early Mother’s Day lunch today for 4 people , it was all of ours first visit and we were very pleasantly surprised Although the staff were dealing with a large group of diners , we did not feel overlooked at all Our waitress was attentive and friendly and informed us with an apology about a slight delay in our meals coming from the kitchen due to the large party , we were more than happy to sit & chat and it wasn’t a issue Our food arrived & it was delicious, fresh and hot and to our minds very good value Our first experience was an enjoyable one , we felt welcomed and valued , we will definitely be returning, thank you all of the lunch time team

I stayed over for one night, and was very impressed. The rooms were fine; the bar and restaurant were welcoming; the food and beverage were perfectly good; but the staff were exceptional - friendly and efficient, the perfect combination. As for location, it's an old Coaching House, so it's right out on Frilford Heath on the main road, several miles away from the next nearest venues. But anyone staying there wouldn't head out, they'd stay in for dinner .... and they'd enjoy it!

Decent enough pub food in a lovely setting with friendly staff. Slightly confused when we parked in the carpark and couldn’t immediately see the pub. It’s actually opposite on the other side of the road, but in the dark there are no obvious signs so it took us a minute! Greeted by friendly staff that were happy to move us to another warmer table when we asked, the Dog House is both large inside but also feels cosy. Not a 5 star review as one of the Specials was off despite still being hung on the blackboard and one of our drinks was delivered incorrectly (they did offer to change). An overall pleasant experience you’d expect from a Chef and Brewer but in a nicer than usual setting and with cheery staff. I suspect we’ll be back.

Stayed for two nights on route from Devon to a funeral near Aylesbury . From the moment we arrived we knew we had chosen the ideal place to stay. The staff were tremendous and so welcoming and thanks to the chef the food was brilliant. If any of our relations decide to die within 50 miles of Abingdon then we will be back.!

Family meet up and fabulous lunch. We even brought our dog! The food was absolutely perfect, and the service first class! There were even treats for the dog! We’ll be back. Thank you.

Had a problem with car which ended up two of waiting in the car park , soon after Steve from the premises came out and asked if we were ok , after explaining the situation Steve kindly offered us coffee on the house inside, Emma looked after us fantastically. I seriously cannot thank Steve and Emma enough , I will certainly return to use the premises

We had a family funeral wake at the Dog House, it's just a few minutes' drive from the South Oxfordshire Crematorium. We had our own separate function area, the staff were extremely helpful both before and on the day. They had thought of everything, like smart white table cloths and a memories table where we put flowers, photo frames and an old photo album. We went for the smaller buffet option plus teas and coffees. The food was amazing and there was loads left. They helped lots of guests take some home by supplying cardboard takeaway boxes. We stayed on into the evening, just the close family, and had a lovely time remembering grandma. Cannot fault it in any way. An excellent venue for a wake. Thank you to Emma, the chef and all the staff on the day.

Visited here on valentines day for our wedding anniversary. The staff were polite and friendly, the food was absolutely beautiful and well presented.

Visited for Valentines meal, food was fantastic and the service was excellent. We don't visit often but when we do it's always a great experience with the only complaint last night that the real ales choice was limited.

I hadn’t planned on visiting, but my car broke down on the side of the road right by the Dog House and I couldn’t have been luckier for that fact in the end! Andrew & James were so helpful and welcoming and what was a stressful morning was made so much better for taking a break there. Thank you!

We travelled from Yorkshire to abingdon for a family birthday in January. though we have been to the dog house before as family live nearby ,on this occasion we booked 2 rooms to stay the night .we were welcomed to the pub and checked in after a few drinks .we had rooms 2 and 21 .we didn't realise that room 21 is a massive attic room with lots of character which this pub has in spades.which was great .room 2 was also nice with TV. Comfy bed .en suite etc .the pre booked evening meal was very nice with excellent service.and after a good night's sleep in the warm room .the radiator under the window kept us nice and warm (the original window was a bit drafty but added to the quirkiness of staying in a19th century building ) followed by a first class English breakfast with lots of choice and other options available .continental etc .and we managed to get all this for a very reasonable rate.so to sum up a great experience for a family birthday .with good food and drink .in a pub with history and character which is well run. Your custom is truly appreciated. Hopefully we will return for a meal on a future visit to Oxford and will stay again in future .

This is the third time we have been to this delightful place. We went with friends for lunch. The food was excellent and the staff were very friendly, helpful. Could not fault the service or the food. We will definitely be going back.

The Dog House, Frilford Heath is a very warm, welcoming, well decorated, family Bar, Restaurant and Hotel. Plenty of space inside., with large car park opposite. The buffet food served for a family occasion was excellent. The staff very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this Pub and will definitely be returning again

We held my Dad's wake at The Dog House yesterday. The buffet was fantastic, and plenty of it. The staff were all polite and respectful. They even gave us boxes to take left over food home. Thank you Steve and your staff.

Very welcoming staff to a comfortable well appointed hotel and restaurant. Manager Steve and colleagues Andrew and James were great. The hotel was lovely and warm during this really cold snap in Jauary and the room we had was large and well equipped.

Stayed on business whilst working the area and safe to say the Doh House is perfectly placed with all you need for a comf6and practical stay with quick access to the major road network the large car park make life easy too Accommodation is good with the rooms equipped with everything you need, the furniture is a little tired in places but everything was clean and perfectly functional so no issues Food was very good at both breakfast and dinner. Andrew makes sure your breakfast is cooked to order and nothing is too much trouble all you have to do is ask and Andrew takes care of it. Both cooked and continental options are available and with some nice choices other than just a full.english! Dinner had a really good selection, and the service was quick even when quite busy. No complaints for the food - tasty and hot ! All in all a pleasant stay and a place that I will now use when working in the area as its a bit of a find!

We popped in during the festive period, the pub was lively & staff busy but they made space for us to have lunch, they kindly went out of their way for my gluten free mother to have what she wanted. The staff were fantastic, upbeat and nothing was too much trouble. Lewis and another lady served us and they were second to none. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone passing & look forward to coming again in the future.

We went to this delightful pub for lunch for my birthday. When we arrived the staff we very friendly and very accomdating. The place was very well set out and was beautifully decorated and very well presented. Nothing was to much problem for the staff....

The staff were so friendly and helpful. Our room was a good size, clean and had a comfortable bed. The bathroom was a little small, but that's to be expected in an old country pub hotel. The breakfast was reasonably priced and very tasty.
