Dog House Hotel Restaurant & Bar in Vale of White Horse

We visited on Saturday 15th March, we hadn't booked but we're seated immediately. The staff were all very polite, friendly and efficient. I would especially like to mention Ruby who was very professional, attentive and welcoming. The food arrived promptly, it was tasty and well presented. Great service, nice hearty food.

We were going to stay at the dog house but due to an issue with our room we were moved to their sister hotel the Rose Revival. This was handled amazingly, we got shuttled to and from and received a free dinner and breakfast! Honestly couldn't have been handled better and everyone was so lovely and accomodating.

Our first time at the Dog House for dinner and drinks. Katy & Georgia were really attentive and welcoming. Very relaxed environment and lovely vibe. Look how forward to visiting again with friends and family.

Here for an evening meal while staying on our friend's narrowboat. Had Starters & main course and just so much unfortunately didn't have room for a desert. Not a criticism a complement!! Several of us chose Honey glazed pork and were all delighted. Our friend's intend to bring their son from Australia in October! The service was very good and especially our cheerful and helpful waitress Pia. Her happy, helpful, cheerful attitude helped to make the evening even more enjoyable. Thankyou all, & especially also to the chef!

Chose the Dog House because we ate here before and were so pleased. As we were again visiting the area we felt it imperative to come again. We were not disappointed. The rump steak was perfectly cooked (rare!) and tender. Generous proportions is under stating it! The service was great and really enhanced by the Lovely, cheerful, professional Niame Thankyou all and compliments to the chef.

Excellent setting inside, large and comfortable seating area. Multiple Menus - specials, set menus, standard menus - all with a variety of food. Waitress was brilliant. Food was great - we opted for a 3 course meal at £19.50 - great selection and large portions - thoroughly enjoyed all the food - burgers were huge and the chicken starter was massive. Great deserts on offer too. All in all a great meal - sadly a bit of confusion when coming to pay - as we were charged for a 2 course meal - then deserts extra - and even though bill was checked, it wasnt realised till later - however a phone call made and refund given. We will certainly go again - although my parents who live in Devon, probably wont get up here again. Thanks everyone. Michael & Tracy

My overall experience at the dog house has been really good. The hosts were very welcoming. My room was clean every day and had all the basic amenities. The choice of menu is good. Compliments to the chef. I think that adds a personal touch. Compliments to all the staff, alway asking if my meal is of satisfactory. Most of all compliment to staff member Andrew. At breakfast time always jovial and cheerful. Making sure all the guests are enjoying their breakfast.

Enjoyed a light lunch today with a group of friends (19 of us) celebrating a 60th birthday. At the end of the meal, we all paid separately or in small groups. I had a Blue Light Card discount of 15% which I wanted to apply to mine and 4 of my friend’s meals. The T&Cs of the discount code said it could be applied to a maximum of 10 people’s meals (including mine). However, when I went to pay I was told by the member of staff serving me that I could not use the discount as the table booking was for over 12 people. I explained I wasn’t paying for 12 people and so that didn’t apply but the member of staff was insistent that because the booking was originally for over 12 people the discount was not allowed. This was extremely disappointing and was not in line with the T&Cs of the discount code. Hence I did not give them a tip and I will be reluctant to eat at their establishment again if they cannot abide by the terms and conditions of a Blue Light Discount code.

Had another scrumptious meal, the traffic works outside were a concern but the meals soon comforted our furrowed brows and stomachs will visit again

I have visited here last year and the service was brilliant! and the food is the best pub grub i have ever had, however i visited at 17:30 on 05/03/25 and we walked to a table as it said nothing about booking and it was quiet. Then shortly after a young waiter came over to me whilst my partner was in the toilet and asked if i had booked, i replied with “we haven’t im sorry, did we have to?” and he then rudely replied with “well no but you walked in with such passion” and then proceeded to give me a dirty look. We were then sat there for 10-15 minutes waiting service and received none whatsoever, however he was quick to serve other customers that came in after us but ignored our existence. I’m sad to be leaving this review as it’s a gorgeous pub but we had to end up leaving due to how uncomfortable he made us feel.

we stopped in for food some of the service needed work but I wanted to express the service from a young lad with issues with our order he could not being any more apologetic and did his most to put everything right always with a smile for a young

Booked a table. Had a Sunday roast it was excellent. Service was great and the price was reasonable.

Second time staying here for business. Comfortable rooms. Good food. Plenty of on-site parking. Affordable rates for room and food. It also has a big beer garden but unable to use this visit due to the weather. Photo from Sept 2021. Update: stayef here again in Sept 2024. Just as good. Staff are excellent and very welcoming. Had an enjoyable evening meal 28 day aged bistro rump 8oz Which was very good. Of you have breakfast definitely try the Farmers breakfast, hash potatoes, streaky bacon, scrambled eggs, spinach, mature cheddar and paprika with side of beans. Fantastic!

A top quality pub with exceptional high quality food, recommend the chicken duo, staff are second to none.

Had a nice evening meal with friends and enjoyed a good burger. Thought it was fairly priced and the service was quick and friendly. Overall a nice evening and will definitely be back.

We had lunch here a couple of weeks ago, and it was an amazing experience! The food was delicious, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff went above and beyond. Lina, Steve, and Simon were fantastic—so kind, quick, and always smiling. We can’t wait to come back very soon! Five stars aren’t enough!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would specifically mention Andrew who looked after us exceedingly well at breakfast and James who cooked a splendid 'Full English'. The Dog House is an excellent pub / restaurant / hotel which I would highly recommend. The only slight negative is that the place is showing some signs of 'ageing' here and there.

We booked in to have bed and breakfast for 2 nights. We had an evening meal on both nights as well. We had our dog with us in a dog friendly room. We have stayed many times for a short break. The rooms are comfortable and cosy. The staff are always friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The food at breakfast and in the evening is delicious and served quickly. Overall our time at the Doghouse is always so enjoyable. We can truly relax.

Have stayed a number of times in the last year for business and geographically for the Oxford area its great just minutes from the A34 and a large free carpark is a plus. EV charging is available nearby (within a few miles) Accommodation: best described as dated, tired, worn out and certainly need some investment and updating. Normally though everything has worked and has been clean however on this stay there was notable dust on the exposed pipework and around the corner of the carpets. The bathroom taps looked dirty with limescale but do believe they had been cleaned just old. The ceiling in the bathroom had clearly suffered water damage with lots of stains and the shower was not great. Sadly I found out that the water damage was still a thing as in the morning I had water dripping through the ceiling and also affecting the light fitting which was doing its best strobe light impression - There is no resident reception/nigh porter so all you can do is call a number displayed in the room - as I was already needing to leave I managed to speak to the morning staff who assured me they would see to the issues. I had already decided that I would be finding alternative accommodation for the rest of my week and found out that the hotel agreed this was unacceptable and did issue a refund Food: normally a hilight and would make up for the tired rooms but this time it fell below par (I didn't have breakfast this time). I ordered the steak which sadly was tough and not that hot when arrived it was edible but not great. The staff are great though and always friendly whether at check in or food service. Sadly this will be the last time I stay here unless there is some changes to the accommodation.

Went Christmas day, staff were amazing and so friendly and made the meal special. Food was great and freshly made. Will use again anytime of year.

Short break 24th to 27th December. Unfortunately I was unwell and we left a day early. The Staff at the Dog House were extremely welcoming and friendly with nothing too much trouble. The mixed sharing platter for 2 was amazing by the way.

We had excellent service with a delicious meal and convivial atmosphere. The beef cheeks from the special menu was tender and melted in my mouth. The pie was also top class

Absolutely faultless service from the team on a Sunday evening. Dinner was divine. They even kept the kitchen open later to accommodate my sisters and I as we messed up our booking time. Really lovely experience. Highly recommend!

Avoid room 19 at all cost! We spent a miserable evening after a lovely family meet-up elsewhere. We were exhausted when we arrived and wanted a quiet evening. We expected some noise however room 19 is immediately next to the disabled loo which the public used often! Although the walls were solid there is little sound insulation that must travel up from poor ceiling insulation. We heard everything often and lucky us if the room behind ours used their loo at the same time…stereo sound! It went on and on and sounded as though they were in the room with us. Genuinely! We left as soon as we could and won’t be returning

Overall had a really lovely meal. Nothing to complain about at all. The staff who we had (Ryan and Sammy) were both lovely and very friendly. We felt very welcomed and would definitely come again!

I booked a table for 2 on Saturday the 7th of September & we received a warm welcome upon our arrival, & then we were shown to our table. The waitress took our orders including drinks, & both followed soon afterwards. Our food & drinks were lovely & our food was nice & hot & well presented & our desserts were excellent too. I have dined at the Dog House numerous times, & every visit has been great, & I thoroughly recommend coming here. The value for money is excellent & well worth it. I was looked after by Simon.

After a terrible journey in stormy conditions we arrived here extremely tired. Steve (the manager) couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming! The pub was super cozy and warm and wonderfully Christmassy! We booked a table for dinner and the food was great. The staff couldn’t have been more kind. The rooms were spotless and the beds were so comfy! Perfect place for a stop over!

Mixed review. 5 of us stayed for the night , having the festive menu in the evening. We got there early and were able to checking early. All staff were very friendly and helpful. We had lunch from the lunch menu and were all happy with it. Rooms were standard, clean but tired and basic, but didn't have any complaints. Evening festive meal was a bit of a disaster, we'd booked ahead but been told didn't need to pre-order but I wish we had. They'd had a big party on at lunchtime and had run out of lots of options we wanted. And the food we had wasted great. I had the turkey, it came with 1 carrot and 1 parsnips which were OK, 3 sprouts that were so hard I couldn't eat them, loads of overly sweet red cabbage, turkey a bit dry but ok and roast potatoes ok. Because of the issues with options not being available we were given free desserts, but again they weren't very nice. I had the mulled fruit cheesecake - the fruit had no mulled flavour and the cheesecake was the most artificial flavour, nothing like a cheesecake. The atmosphere in the restaurant was also very dull and christmas decorations looked very sad. The staff were pleasant and apologetic. Breakfast in the morning was very good though, english breakfast was tasty, Pancakes and brioche were good. And the waiter was very friendly and helpful. Although lunch and breakfast were good, we'd gone for the festive evening meal and were very disappointed. Personally I won't go there again.

Had a great stay, always pick this place if I can. Good sized rooms and excellent service from Andrew who looks after your breakfast requests, and James cooks the food just the way you want it.

Haven't commented on rooms as we didn't stay. The food was fantastic, the service was brilliant and the prices were very reasonable. Lovely atmosphere & decor, even the ladies toilets. Ample car-parking spaces across the road. Came here for my Dad's 89th birthday as he loves the place. Definitely recommend. (November 2024)

Booked a Sunday lunch for a family birthday, very friendly welcome we felt like regulars in fact it was our first visit, wonderful lunch (reccomend the trio of meats) with friendly quick service without being rushed at all. We felt the while experience represented good value and high quality in a relaxed setting

The highly efficient stafwho were the most friendly and genuinely happy staff I have come across in my many stays in hotels and pubs over the years I would like to single out Andrew and James(only because we left early and didn’t get the names of the other s)they were all let down by the tiredness of the rooms particularly the windows which sadly all need replacing and the overall decoration of the building leaves one thinking neglect.

Pleasant country hotel with lots of free parking. Warm and friendly very helpful & attentive staff. Rooms clean,warm but rather tired in some areas. Excellent choice on menu and well prepared food. Served well by Ryan,Lewis & Simon. This was our 4th time here, wouldn't go anywhere else when we regularly visit Oxford.

Just on the spur of the moment we booked in for Sunday Lunch. We were warmly welcomed and our roast pork lunch was excellent value and really tasty. We were very impressed with the service we received. Ellie, who served us was friendly and ultra efficient; nothing was too much trouble. We hadn't visited the Dog House in a while, but based on our experience today we'll definitely be back!

We spotted off for a bite to eat on our travels and was able to grab a table for the two of us. We were told upon being sat there would be a bit of wait for food - but it didn’t even feel like we waited long at all! Service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious. I had the Steak sandwich and it was beautiful - steak cooked exactly how i asked!

Fantastic service especially at Breakfast time and looked after by Andrew and James. Perfect poached eggs!

Normally enjoy our visits here but left very disappointed on this occasion. My beer was particularly poor, long wait for food, (roasts) were very poor, beef was tough and chewy and veg consisted of some watery stringy cabbage and two minute pieces of parsnip that you could barely see. Potatoes were poor quality and undercooked and both they and the Yorkshire puddings were all dried up. There was no carrots,peas , broccoli and the gravy was virtually non existent. I have had a much better drink, meal and service in my local wetherspoons for half the price

Really cosy pub, lovely food, with wonderful staff. Steve & Katie could not have made us more welcome. We met old friends and spent six hours eating and drinking in gorgeous ambience. Ronnie doggy loved it too - especially the doggy treat and chicken xx thanks for having us xx

Visited again for a birthday meal for the first time post-Covid. While the decor and menu has changed - and I think also the ownership? - the Dog House remains a delight. Food is fantastic and if anything the service is even better than in my previous review.

Well, what an absolute pleasure to stop at the Dog House, which we celebrated my friend birthday & went to the Gauge 1 AGM. The staff were all young & absolutely fabulous. So helpful, nothing too much trouble. Rooms are a bit tired but clean & everything you need for a night away. The food was beautiful. Everything was severed nicely. Great menu lots to choose from & the puddings were delish. It's definitely worth going.

Hotel Stay Absolutely lovely place. Such a friendly warm atmosphere. Food is amazing. All the staff are lovely. A special thank you to Steve and Emma who went way beyond and above to help me with an accommodation problem. Honestly I can’t express how kind and helpful they were and how much it’s appreciated. It’s my two dogs first trip to a hotel and they’ve been made very welcome. 100% dog friendly. We would definitely come back in fact we would like to move in 😜

We went here for lunch as a family group of seven. Our first visit, and we will certainly return. My daughter is vegan and gluten free so it’s quite difficult to find places to eat that cater for both. No problems here… quite a few options available. Everyone enjoyed their food and it was served with a smile, hot and nicely presented. I can recommend the home made fish cake ; the nicest I have tasted. The staff made us very welcome, and the service was friendly and attentive without being overly so. We enjoyed a lovely lunch together, so a big thanks to the staff team. Go and visit and you won’t be disappointed.

we visit every 3 months as a group of friends, steve and his team always look after us well, its well organised and the food is always fantastic. this time around i had squid and bangers and mash and it was very good. i have visited a few times with my wifr normally on a sunday and find the roast dinners to be very good. it really is good to have such a great pub close by. shout out to simon who is always speedy on the bar. this time helped out by steve.

Got told we had to have booked and they didn't have a table, then some people just walked in and given a table and they hadn't book either, Staff very rude, They looked down their noses at us, they gave me the feeling that I couldn't afford to be there... my advise don't judge someone by their looks... then we got told it was card only.. at that point we left... CASH IS KING

Popped in for an impromptu lunch, to find the place busy. We were met by lovely staff, so we decided to stay for a drink and crisps. The staff then came to us and said they could squeeze us in, and we weren't disappointed. Great food, great service and a wonderful experience. We will definitely come back, and also bring people with us next time. Thank you The Dog House.

It is more like a traditional pub & restaurant with some rooms, but a very nice place with an extremely polite service-team. I did enjoy the stay there more than in the big common hotels I was used to. The food was very good.

Our room was comfortable and clean, the meals were served hot, well presented and tasty. There's a good choice of drinks and a very competitive wine list. The staff were helpful, friendly and attentive. We hope to visit the Dog House again in the future.

We had dinner Sunday 23rd june after looking for a nice place to eat. We are not from the area but were staying with friends and wanted a bite to eat before heading home. We were served by a lovely, bubbly young lady called Ella. The food was great and quick (but not "too" quick), we loved the atmosphere of the place and while it was busy it didn't feel too crowded. Ella was great at recommending choices from the menu for us and was very attentive throughout. The facilities were clean and the garden was lovely. We will return when we come back next year. Thanks.

My family and I visited the Dog House last weekend for Father’s Day. We were served by Ellie, who provided a 5 star customer service and was attentive, friendly and polite throughout our visit. We all had a 3 course set menu which was amazing..generous portions! I would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

We live locally and keep giving the Doghouse a go in the hope its a better experience but always leave let down. Glorious evening yet you cant eat outside so we ordered at the bar (which was initially ordered wrong) and were asked to keep popping in to see if the food was ready so we could be placed inside. When the food was ready we were asked to sit near to where two staff were sat on the floor sorting out glasses when the whole restaurant was empty. Food arrived and was missing part of the main so we waited for that to arrive. We ate, got up to leave and walked passed a number of staff who didnt breakaway from their chat and left. We just never feel special or at the least feel a valued customer. Sorry but with other places locally must more attentive i doubt we'll be back.

Went for our 20th wedding anniversary. Service and food were amazing. Staff were very attentive and to top it all off they gave us an anniversary card. Highly recommend and will be going back again!

Was a bit disappointed when we went on Farther’s day. The pub it self is nice, great gardens for kids to run around in. The service was good but the food was very budget. Frozen roast potatoes and not quality ones at that, was really disappointing when you are looking forward to Sunday roast at a pub!

Typical rural cottage in the middle of the English countryside not even half an hour from Oxford. Dinner and breakfast in the hotel's pub are also excellent. Highly recommended

Slow service on both occasions we visited across 2 weeks, though the staff were kind about this and knocked the puddings off the meal cost. Don’t order the grilled sea bass (£17.49) as the portion was smaller than the kids meals. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff.
