Not been here since the refurbishment but will visit again

We had a great meal here. All food cooked well and hot on arrival. Prompt service. Happy, friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Will return and happily recommend 👌

Fabulous meal and great service especially as we were a large group. Nothing was too much trouble and all the staff were helpful, polite and happy which made the whole evening very enjoyable. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend and will be returning very soon.

A big pub, easy to find on the outskirts of Wantage. Plenty of parking available. Lots of seating both outside and inside. Good choice of drinks at the bar. Menu choices were good and service was quick. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Food portions very adequate. Overall a pleasant experience, and we will be returning.

Really friendly staff, very attentive and a nice atmosphere within the pub. Online ordering which is always a bonus and a well maintained beer garden. The food was good and served fast although there are some areas for improvement. The haloumi fries were tasty but barely warm, indicating they may have been sat for a while waiting for the others, and the king prawn and chorizo was tasty but I don't believe it was actual chorizo. From the taste and texture it appeared to be a "Chorizo style" sausage rather than actual Chorizo. Past that everything was amazing! Pies were perfect, Chips were crisp but fluffy and the Gravy was lovely. The Focaccia is a must try! Will defintely be back again.

Excellent food and service ,would highly recommend this restaurant if we lived closer would go there again but we are 170 miles away.

Feel really sad to be writing this review as in the past up until this visit the Lord Nelson has never delivered a bad meal but I'm afraid to say on this occasion they really let us down. We had a party of eight booked for my daughters birthday and chose here rather than anywhere else as we had young children and needed to go out earlier being a midweek school night. Visited on a Wednesday early evening so the pub wasn't very busy. We were seated then left and eventually ended up ordering individually at the bar. From then on it was a total disaster. My daughter, who's birthday it was, lamb shank had to be returned as it the meat was so red it looked like it was straight off the butchers block and it didn't fill us with much confidence when the girl stood there and said that she wouldn't eat that and they'd had problems with them whilst stood behind someone else who also had ordered it! The steak was terrible,not cooked how ordered and the beef rib bourguignon apparantly tasted off. Meals were also bought out at different times. Noticed that a group of people who came in after us had table service. Really disappointed, ruined a happy occasion and feel very let down this time. Sad to say we won't be returning anytime soon

Stopped here today en route from Cardiff to London with my grandmother, food and atmosphere excellent and better than Little Chef!

Brilliant pub. Lovely warm atmosphere with decent food and a good selection of drinks. Helpful, friendly staff and a well run pub.

Unimpressed - diet coke or no coke. Can't have poached egg on your gammon but you can have them with your fishcakes, 3 meals sent back and one missing an item it was supposed to come with (as listed on the menu...) We'll bring out your birthday cake but won't bring you a knife to cut it with or plates to put it on.... Won't come for a second visit I'm afraid. Edit: I emailed/contacted as requested but no reply. Have sent a chaser email but this has further annoyed me as I feel the reply asking me to get in contact was not genuine but rather just to look as though this is being taken seriously 😒

Room for improvement as they ruined a family celebration for a party of 12. Tried to order poached eggs instead of fried not an option. The service was chaotic the lad didn't know what he was serving and the food got cold whilst waiting for wrong orders to be corrected. The quality of the food was poor. Finally when the BD cake was delivered there the plates didn't arrive until sometime later.

Lacking in management. Who doesnt have coke or coke zero on a Saturday? Screams of terrible management, especially for a venue thats operated by a brewer. Food was lackluster at best, have had better means at a beefeater or harvester and thats saying something. To say that the staff/management couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery is the most apt thing to say. Would not return. Shambles with no leadership.

Needs to be updated. Shame kids were running around no supervision. Felt sorry for the staff

We held a work social at the Lord Nelson for 80 people and we were so well looked after. From the moment I walked in with a an idea, Chloe could not have been more helpful and we used the lower bar area but as it was such a nice day groups made use of the garden too. The food delivery was super speedy - even for 80 meals with different food options and one of my colleagues said that the steak and ale pie was the best he’d had in a long time! Everyone looked after us really well and I have no hesitation in booking here again. Thanks to everyone at the Lord Nelson.

We come in to day four my sons bithday there was 10 of us .food was lovely and staff great one bar staff need to smile more and a bit more friendly if in front of house but other than that food great and value four money big portions to defo be back

Had a great meal with the family for a milestone birthday. Food was really good. Steak cooked perfectly.

We chose The Lord Nelson as it is such good value for money, with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Our waitress Eloise was incredible, friendly and efficient and nothing was too much trouble. The food was so much better than I was expecting and even though it was very busy, the food arrived promptly. Our party of three all chose different offers and options for our lunch and we were all very happy with our choices.

Food was amazing and very fast service, only thing that let it down was the manager Chloe was very rude and abrupt, hopefully if we was to return she would have a change of attitude, it was quit unwelcoming as there was alot of young children with is and it was like they was just an inconvenience being there, wasn't acknowledged very well by the manager at all.

This was our first time visiting The Lord Nelson and what a great first visit. We were greeted as soon as we came through the door with a warm welcome and shown to our table. We were then greeted by another member of staff to take our drinks order which was taken and quickly delivered to our table. We was expecting a wait as you could see it was busy and even more so as it was Mother's Day. But the staff seemed to be in total control and kept the service going efficiently. Our food orders were taken with no let downs with items missing off the menu, which we have had at another local establishment on a number of occasions and having to change our food order completely. The food was great, portion sizes were better than expected and the quality was great value for money. As I said this was a firsts visit and definitely won't be the last as our new local. Great credit to the staff on the venue making us feel really welcome.

We all had a wonderful Mother’s Day Sunday roast dinner 🍽️ which was delicious 😋 We enjoyed great service from Chloe, James, Jenny and Emma. Thank you so very much everyone. We hope you enjoyed the celebration cake 🍰 with love Debbie, Penny and Michael 🥰 x x

Very pleasant Mother's Day afternoon dinner with the Marit being as attentive and lovely as before, thank you to all for today.

Brrr. The tempeture inside was several degree up on that outside, but without the wind, luckily we did not sit opposite the entrance. Also noted that all but two diners (children), sat either in heavy weight jumpers/cardigans or their out-door coats; no apologies forthcoming from staff regards negative heating. Meals ordered & arrived very quickly on warm plates, along with the meal which appeared seemed to have been microwaved, due to the rapid cooling of the meal, or was it caused by the room tempeture. The food it-self was quite tasty despite it's coolness. Unfortunately on applying the black pepper the lid came off, luckily I do like pepper so wasn't an issue, but when informing the server the reply was simply 'Sorry about that. Hoping the heating will be fixed before Sunday

The beer is good. Sometime there are too many TVs and the music is a bit too loud to hold a conversation. Outside in the summer is good though 👌

Great bar staff food good nice to watch football and other sports

We love the outside seating here in the summer as lovely big garden and dog friendly, However in December i Took my family for dinner... we ordered 2 kids meals which were fine for the price, One burger which again was quite good for the price and a rump steak - the steak was OK but overcooked and small, i asked if i could have boiled potatoes instead of chips (as they are on the menu) clearly the kitchen didn't have any so instead they just chopped up a normal potato and microwaved it, it was not cooked properly, rubbery and hard in the middle. Unfortunately i then got very ill that evening and can only assume it was the steak (Rest of the family were fine) will still come back for drinks in the garden but will be avoiding the food for a while.

Usual bad service from staff that in all fairness are overworked . Full of horrible people with horrible children.

It's very Green-Kingy but has some great staff on the team at the moment which has picked up the over all level to make it one of the best choices for a lazy one out with the kids.

Great food and the staff super friendly

It's a great spot for a reliable lunch or evening meal with a pint. The staff are always so friendly and it has a great social atmosphere. Sometimes gets a bad rep but you should not be expecting a gastropub or winebar: it's a local! 🙂 I've been here to meet friends and for work get togethers and it has always delivered. I like the layout that splits it into 4 rough areas: up top, middle bar area, lower area with TV, and garden with plenty of seating and a big car park.

We used to like going to the Lord Nelson, however recently it has gone downhill. The food recently has become bad ( I feel this is when they are most busy and rushing to get food out). Burnt and soggy. The service is good. However at times it can be poor at the bar. We have had experiences waiting to be served and staff just walk straight past and ignore you. There is a pool table which is good, however this only one cue and often the tip is broken and they don’t always offer replacements. You’re better to go when it’s quite, more likely to get served and get a nicer meal. It used to be better around a month ago.

Lovely pub really nicely decorated for Christmas. There were 6 of us in our party and everyone of us enjoyed our food. Reasonably priced and very hot on arrival as it should be. Staff very helpful an enjoyable lunch.

Had lunch here on a Saturday. Staff 5/5, quality and quantity 5/5. Had vegan options and 5/5.

Eight of us visited on Saturday the 21st of October to celebrate my Grandsons Birthday. We all had starters and mains, several had burghers which were amazing, two had the steaks cooked as requested, one had the fish cakes, one had the Hunters chicken, I personally had the lamb shank which was very tasty and beautifully cooked. All the plates were empty when they were collected which is the best recommendation I can offer. Everyone of the Staff from behind the bar and the Waitresses were friendly, helpful and very professional. Lastly top marks to the Chef (Chefs) for eight amazing starters and mains. We will be back again without a doubt.

Partner & I often come here for a meal on Sundays after a long walk. We never book & have always found a table. Food is excellent, thoroughly recommended the roasted lamb shank, literally falls of the bone. Great place for all the family. We usually see the same faces, so we're not the only ones who like it

The service was mediocre. I popped in for a quick drink and all I saw was managers standing round on their phones and staff standing around not knowing what to do. Seems like its poorly run.

Fantastic food and very fast service

Went there yesterday in a group of 4 who had 2 roast dinners & 2 burger meals.I was not impressed with the amount of food on the plate considering the cost of the roast dinner as we had only 5 really tiny roast potatoes along with a very small portion of veg along with 2 very thinly sliced portions of beef.Considering the price of veg I think they could have been more generous considering many competitors let you help yourself to veg!.I will now carefully look at reviews of other places who also do roast dinners to see if portion sizes like I had at the Lord Nelson are the norm.

The bar staff are very friendly and keen to help.

I visited the Lord Nelson for a quick fish and chips! It was fantastic. Brilliant service from the staff. Very enthusiastic and attentive! Lovely garden with all the new plants and signage up. Would definitely recommend!

Very nice place to take the family for a meal

My husband and myself love our sunday lunch. Food great, staff amazing, Always friendly and welcoming. Great place to bring family and friends. Very Dog friendly we bring all three Dogs who love the Doggie ice cream. We are always welcomed with a smile.

I honestly have nothing bad to say about the Lord nelson pub. We went for a meal for my husbands 30th birthday and the staff were friendly and just amazing glad getting the food out quickly and they went above and beyond making my husbands birthday that little bit more special. The food was delicious and loads to choose from, something for everyone and not expensive and quality was great. Thank you to all the staff!

Another brilliant meal at the Nelson. Since the refurb it really has turned itself around. Chloe and her staff are just amazing. Food was brilliant and the table service is just great. So nice to have our local pub back up to high standards for food and service.

Three of us had a late lunch here and it was a good experience. We all opted for fish and chips and would recommend. The staff were attentive and friendly. The restaurant was clean. Plenty of tables and chairs. Good value menu.

We were seated as soon as we arrived, but I had prebooked, we were early but still seated us , food came out quickly , staff very friendly and helpful .

Nice place and atmosphere and service. But the pint of cider and even the soda water were undrinkable, sorry.
