Went for Sunday lunch, it was very last minute and we had our dog with us. They were very accommodating, and laid out a table in the bar for us. We were served very quickly, and the food arrived in less than 10 minutes. I must say it was delicious. Beef was tender, yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes were delicious, plenty of vegetables. The service was friendly. Overall it was very good, and I will return again.

Wanted somewhere for a nice lunch on a Sunday, and the Woodlands Tavern was just great. Never been before and the food was great, in fact the roast dinner (I had beef and my partner had lamb) was fantastic. Great beef, crispy fluffy roasties, cauliflower cheese, red cabbage, gravy, horseradish sauce, etc etx. Brilliant. Service was absolutley lovely and the beer was great. Well done to this place!

The Woodlands Tavern is just off the A48 near Caerwent in the Village of Llanvair Discoed. Parking is a bit of an issue as there car park is quite small, it’s on a lane so not really an option to park on the road. Don’t let that put you off we had Sunday lunch there today. There was a nice choice of the typical Sunday lunch meats and a couple of other choices. The Sunday lunch we thought was excellent, we had the beef and lamb which were both amazingly tender and the Yorkshire puddings were proper ones, none of your frozen stuff! Portions were extremely generous. What we liked was that all the veg was included, you didn’t have to pay extra for this or that. We had roast potatoes, new potatoes, red cabbage, carrots, parsnips, cauliflower flower cheese and of course the amazing Yorkshire pudding. Perhaps a couple of pound more expensive than some other local pubs but to me definitely worth it as you got everything included. We didn’t have desserts so can’t comment on them. Waitresses appeared to be rushing around, perhaps a couple of extra staff to make it a more calming atmosphere to eat in, but they did a great job. I would definitely go again, and probably very soon!

On approach the pub was smart In appearances and well lit. We were greeted by a friendly smiling member of staff. We were shown to our seats promptly. And drinks and food orders were taken. I was pleasantly surprised as the interior of the restaurant was very well decorated and everything looked sharp and clean Glamorgan sausage and creamed leaks cheddar mash and tender stem broccoli. The sausages were vegetarian but I thought I'd give it a go. And I'm glad I did the whole dish was outstanding. So tastley and cooked to perfection only gripe was the portion was quite small. Misses had grilled sea bass braised leak with fondant potatoes and lemon butter. Misses said her dish was exceptional very tasty and well presented. On exit I visited the toilets which were to the same good standard....... so all in all a lovely pub, super friendly waitress and I couldn't recommend this hidden gem enough. Will definitely be coming again soon. I am surprised it was so quiet

Today was the first Tea and Coffee Morning at this attractive and friendly venue in the village of Llanfair Discoed. It is a new venture by the team and is destined to be an enormous success. We have visited on several occasions for evening meals and have always found the food, service and ambience of the highest standard. Those exceptional standards were very much in evidence today. We were a group of two couples and sampled a variety of the options on offer. The Americano and Latte coffees were delicious and my generous pot of English Breakfast Tea was perfect. I had Brioche with Pork and Leek sausages, with an egg as a side portion; my wife sampled sausage in granary bread; whilst one of our friends had the bacon on granary bread sandwich and the other had bacon with black pudding on granary bread. Everyone said that the food was superb, perfectly cooked and presented, with the portions being generous. There were several extremely appetising and freshly cooked cakes and gateaux available but we did not have room to try them!!! However, it is an excellent excuse for a return visit. The staff, as always were welcoming, friendly and attentive, and added to the pleasure of the experience. Whether you are just visiting the area, enjoying the walks in the nearby Wentwood Forest, or if you live in the vicinity, the Woodlands Tavern is a place that you really do need to visit. I promise you that you will not be disappointed and will find an experience that you will relish and thoroughly enjoy.

Well I’ve eaten in a few Michelin starred restaurants and this one should be up there. We’ve eaten here a couple of times over the last month or so and on both occasions the food has been delicious, and the service friendly and not at all stuffy. The menu isn’t very wide which is always a good sign that the food is cooked fresh to order, but neither my husband nor myself had any problem choosing. It arrived in good time, and was beautifully presented although I personally have a problem with Jenga food, stacked up so that you can’t see anything but the top layer (the only advantage being that it helps to keep it hot!). Luckily the plate was large enough that I could disassemble the layers and lay them out properly. The sea bass was beautifully cooked and the broccoli just so too. My husband’s Thai Green curry was obviously made in house and I’m told was delicious and suitably spicy. The portions are generous too. The pub is dog friendly allowing diners with dogs to eat in the bar, or in their delightful little patio area. We’ve done both, the last visit being in the recent heatwave when we ate outside & pretended we were in the Med. The prices are very reasonable given the quality of the food and the ambiance. We count ourselves lucky that this little gem of a pub is relatively local. It deserves to be better known, although I hope they’ll always have room for us!

Today I had leak and potato soup followed by prawn and crayfish salad, both absolutely devine. This is a family run pub which is a bit off the beaten track but is definitely worth the effort of finding especially if you like a great pint and good food. The food is at another level freshly prepared by a chef who knows how to cook , it's well presented and at a reasonable price, oh and before I forget, service with a smile ...in my book priceless. We dined here at the end of a visit to the UK. For a Saturday night, the dining room was unnaturally quiet, with only two other diners apart from our group of four. I had ordered the scampi and was disappointed to discover that the coating comprised the main part of the dish (probably a food processing shortcoming) and nothing to do with the kitchen, but as the meals were on the expensive side for a pub, I wasn't impressed. My husband's meal was only passable, and we didn't linger as the wine prices were above average. Maybe it was a bad night!

We enjoyed a good meal having arrived without booking a table in advance. This was no problem and we were soon seated and placing our order. The fish and chips were lovely and the batter was really light. You can't ask for more that fish and chips and a pint of beer really can you on a Friday night. The selection of fresh fish is really good and varies every visit according to what fresh in that day. We haven't been there for about a year but the landlady remembered us which is really nice. We were staying at Penhein Glamping on an extremely chilly weekend, so the simplest thing to do on the Friday night was order takeaway fish & chips (lovely and a total lifesaver that evening). When we went to collect the pub seemed very welcoming with a great looking menu (and lovely and warm) so some of us also went back for lunch the following day. I must admit the price of the steak caused me a slight eyebrow raise, but it was the best steak I've had in a very long time - full of flavour and lovely & tender (no gristle battle at all) - worth every penny. Another friend went for their set menu which was extremely cheaply priced and was very good.Lovely staff, great service, highly recommended, and if we're ever back in the area we'll be sure to visit.

Unfortunately my family and I were disappointed with our visit to The Woodlands Tavern as the atmosphere left a lot to be desired. We ordered from the a la carte menu and the food was good. I would recommend the parfait to start and the rack of lamb and venison were flavourful and tender and the sauce was tasty. However, the side of "seasonal" vegetables consisted of only carrots and runner beans when other places I have eaten have provided a larger range such as cauliflower and broccoli. Their menu also states "All main courses served with a choice of new potatoes or hand cut chips and seasonal vegetables”, which was not the case during our visit. We should have had been asked if we wanted chips or potatoes as well vegetables, but we only received the latter. Unfortunately, we did not realise at the time or we would have mentioned it. We also ordered a large bottle of sparkling water which arrived already opened and not particularly sparkling. The service was incredibly lacklustre, with no smiles or greetings and we got the impression they had much better things to be doing. As I have worked in customer services I know it can be difficult but apart from one other couple and a large party (who had already finished their main courses) we were the only ones there so they were not particularly busy; so in my opinion there was no excuse for the almost sullen service. A smile and some quick small talk can go a long way. Compared to other, similarly priced places I have eaten at The Woodlands Tavern fell short of expectations and was not good value for money.

Last Saturday we held a surprise wedding anniversary party for my parents and 40 guests in the function room at The Woodlands Tavern. Booking the venue, organising the menu and setting up the room on the day were all very easy with the help of Sue and Keith. On the night of the party Sue ensured all our guests were secretly waiting for my parents' arrival behind the closed Bar door, so that the surprise was kept to the last. On the evening we had a two-course meal, served efficiently by the lovely waiting staff. Many guests commented on how tasty the food was, especially praising the vegetarian options. The recommended DJ did an excellent job with the music keeping everyone dancing until midnight. Many thanks Keith and Sue - great night!

We were staying at Penhein Glamping around the corner and the website recommended the pub to us so we rang in advance of our stay to make a dinner reservation for our first night. We were so impressed with the food (lamb and duck), that we returned the next night to try some of the other dishes on the menu (fillet steak with red wine sauce)! What an absolute gem of a pub - thankfully only a 40 minute drive from Bristol, very tempted to return in the future even if it does mean leaving the country for dinner! If we could afford it, we'd relocate permanently to Penhein and eat exclusively at the Woodlands. Thanks for making our weekend away so enjoyable!

Just moved into the village and we are already regulars. We've had superb family Sunday lunches here, great evening meals (try the lambs liver) and even the odd take away. All fabulous. The people are gorgeous too. Only problem is staying away!!

My girlfriend and I took both our sets of parents here for a special family Sunday lunch, the setting of the pub is lovely with rustic features and soiled wood tables and chairs. We all had three courses and I have to say the quality and taste of the food was simply exceptional. The staff were very friendly and nothing was to much trouble. If you haven't been to the woodlands I highly recommend you do, We'll be returned soon.

We are regulars here because the food is always consistently good. The early bird and lunch menu is great value and the a la carte overs a great choice. It's traditional British in style and the quality and quantity are excellent. There is always a range of fish dishes which are. lovely and fresh and we love the chips and mushy peas that go with the deep fried version (never greasy!). We will be back!

Great place on a wet Sunday lunchtime. They had some large bookings so started with an apology that we might have to wait. Nothing could be further from the truth, we sat in the bar and enjoyed a leisurely Sunday lunch, which was great value. I saw one review complain that they only had two roast potatoes...! Well the mountain of lovely fresh new potatoes to go with these wasn't scrimping, together with lots of other fresh vegetables. Lovely Welsh lamb great haddock and chips and a vegetarian option of baked field mushroom & goats cheeses kept us all happy. Good home made desserts to finish. 3 courses with drinks for £75!!! Anyone says that's not good value needs their head examining.Very friendly locals in the bar and welcoming staff made it a pleasant time all round, thank you.

This lovely pub and restaurant sits just off the A48 at Caerwent and the road to Usk via Wentwood which is a very picturesque way to Usk. we were a party of six and each I believe had a different dish from the menu. Will not bore readers with the dishes as the menu changes quite a bit as Keith the owner buys fresh produce and it shows. There is however a difference of opinion as to the size of the dishes. I have a small appetite and the large dish of very tasty chicken livers would have fed me for a week----- but it hit the taste buds with the way it tasted and presented. I am uncomfortable in not finishing a dish as it could appear that I had some problem with the cooking. Plaice is plaice in size so I had no problem with the main dish Others in our party had no such problems with two having clean plates and the rest being defeated in various levels. Sweets are so good and the cheese board was very well received. The restaurant was full but service was not stretched and we did not have any long pauses between each course. So well done. Finally I must congratulate the staff on the décor and cleanliness of the toilets they are a credit to the owners. Such attention must feed back into the attention of food preparation and service.

Best roast beef on the planet. Lovely team on Sunday's. Nothing too much trouble. No mobile phone signal so you get a peaceful lunch "off the grid".

Came here for Sunday lunch with family and friends. Service was good, although it was very slow. I had the beef which was lovely, although the Yorkshire puddings were disappointing and I was only given 2 tiny roast potatoes. This was disappointing as its on the pricey side at £17.99 for 2 course. Staff were nice but service was extremely slow. I'm not sure I'd return which is a shame as it has potential and it was busy.

Ate here with a large group, the service was excellent and the food, although plain, was hot and well cooked. Would certainly eat here again.

Returned to The Woodlands Tavern for lunch again. We had had such a good meal a few weeks previously that we decided to return. It was a Saturday afternoon again and was relatively quiet. The landlady was as hospital as before remembered us from our earlier visit which was lovely and made you feel at home. We had a great meal good value and wonderful friendly service. If you are passing it is well worth the short drive to the village. It is a pretty pub in the heart of Llanvair village. Really good selection of food, wine and beer and a nice little venue for personal parties and receptions.

We held our Wedding meal in the room upstairs of this lovely pub. Seven Events, Newport, decorated the room beautifully. All my guests commented on how delicious the food was, especially the raspberry chocolate tart. I can't thank Keith, Sue and staff enough, they were brilliant and couldn't do enough. I would strongly recommend this venue for any sort of do. Also we cannot keep away, their fish and chips are the best. The Woodlands Tavern is definitely the place for food around this area. Again a big thank you for making my special day extra special.

On the way to Newport with a friend to visit a another on Saturday. We came across The Woodlands Tavern by spotting the sign on the Chepstow Newport road. The sign took us to the village of Llanvair Discoed. A quaint village with the pub settled in the centre. Really well kempt pub, lovely warm welcome and excellent food.We had the dressed crab and prawns with a fab salad. It has a good choice of food. Can really recommend this place if you are in the area.

Enjoyable evening meal and despite reading earlier reviews very welcoming staff. Three out of four of us went for the traditional fish & chips which deserved the previous commendations. Pleasant surroundings in a quiet setting - will visit again .

Not very welcoming, very little atmosphere, no background music. Food overpriced for the quality provided. £18 for a lambshank which did not appear home cooked and a cheese board with bog standard cheap biscuits and three small pieces of artisan cheese of which the varieties were not known by the waitress together with green grapes which were so old they were brown and not attached to the vine topped off the poor meal. Will not return as this was a rip off, it was afraid at evening and the restaurant was less than half full with only three other tables being used which summed it up.

We always enjoy our meal here. We have been coming here for a number of years. We have never had a disappointing meal here. The food is always beautifully presented ( even the special price weekday menu) The menu is not vast but the selection is always varied with a good fish choice. Lovely food in a relaxing setting .

Room lighting was a little iffy. Well decorated. Outwhat's the minimum for charging devices? Water in the room a couple of breakfast options available with a meal. Hotel was unavailable from the street until four p m, fact that no one communicated to us, Nor did anyone advise to pull into one of the upper street parking lots and walked down and Sort out how baggage would get there. A good news is they have WI. Fi. The bad news is it's unsecured so you really can't use it. No elevator always a problem with old british hotels, can prepare to leave your bags in the car.

Took my sales team here for lunch, 10 of us in total. The food is incredible and you certainly won’t go hungry. Everyone at the pub is friendly and can’t do enough for you. Feels like a good old fashioned boozer set in an amazing position on the Wye. Everyone only had good things to say about the place. Steak is a specialty here. No hesitation in recommending the Rose and Crown. Thanks all who looked after us that day.

We shared 6 Vegetable dishes for lunch today, plus a pud, and every mouthful was sensational. The dishes were complex and delicious, and very satisfying. It is difficult to find good vegetarian food that I can’t cook equally well at home. These dishes really were better than anything I’ve cooked, and there was plenty of choice. Plenty of choice for carnivores too. The chefs really know how to squeeze the maximum flavour out of every ingredient. The celeriac dish was my favourite , but we couldn’t decide which was our second favourite plate of deliciousness. We’ll be back.
